The D model is one of my absolute favorite mechs. It's quite ludicrous, being more armored than many heavies, armed like a heavy-medium and as mobile as the average light.
Ah the Centurion, One of my favorite medium mechs. I have managed to get really good at twisting my torso about 30 degrees so the shield arm eats shots aimed for my torso, and free aiming the gun arm to get a cheeky headshot
@@mk6315 in the game it gives you the option to aim your arms without moving the torso, I forget what the control was called but it's handy for facing a certain direction while shooting about 30 degrees to the side
Not gonna lie, as unremarkable as it is, the Centurion is one solid mech, strong, dependable and capable of fighting till it blows up, all and all, one very solid mech.
Centurions are extremely prone to blowing up is the thing. Low armor plus high structure and a like 3 or 4 tons of ammo is... Bad. Don't get me wrong though it's literally my favorite mech lol.
I remember the 1st time i saw the Centurion. my first battletech game, Mech Commander 1 gold edition when i was a knee high. among the many games my dad got me on the best birthday of my life. i still remember that cutsceen by heart to this day. "One clanner down, 100 more to go, Welcome to Port Arthur, Sir."
I love the damn thing. Replaced the AC10 to AC5, 3xSRM6, and retained the 2 ML. All of that firepower for the cost of shaving back and leg armor. And it runs hot too.
It says something about the design that it appeared in the Battletech TV show. Fledgling mechwarriors must've watched and said "I've seen those! Where the hell did it get jump jets..."
Just started playing the battletech pc game and have been running a lance of 4 centurions when I’m not in campaign missions, I actually have 3 CN9-A and a CN9-AL to provide more individual shots against annoying high evasion mechs like locusts. Love it more and more every time I use it and it’s 100% one of my favourite mechs
Thank you for the lecture boss! Another mech that I am deeply familiar with, Centurions are insanely popular out in the Periphery and even the Deep Periphery for all the reasons you described. It’s easy for the big states like the Magistracy or the Concordat to produce them for their own Regiments as well as sell them on or gift them to mercenaries and small periphery states. And of course they’ll inevitable find their way into the arsenals of pirates, bandits, slavers, and other assholes who require killing. Thus making work for groups like my old merc unit. Ahhhh… the beauty of the cycle of life.
The Centurion is a fantastic choice for any merc Commander's stable. Sturdy, affordable, easy to maintain and offering a great variety of weapons across all range brackets. Sure, your lance leader's heavy mech is your biggest investment, but put his bodyguard in one of these and you can protect him well from those pesky fast flankers. It's got great heat control and enough ammunition to let the pilot fire free without worry of running dry in an extended firefight. For less than 3.5 million C-bills, you get a mech that can handle any job that doesn't involve high-speed scouting. On it's own, it's okay. But as a member of a lance, it really shines.
I've been thanking whatever god looks over Mechwarriors for how good these are lately. Got hired on to a company run by an old friend of mine, and my main job is to use a Jenner to babysit his wife in her Centurion, while she does her damnedest to personally beat every enemy Mech encountered to death with it's fists. I don't think I could've managed it so far it they weren't tough as they are. (Edit for grammar)
The Centurion truly is the soldier’s mech. Solid at all ranges, well armored enough to survive general combat, and carrying enough ammo for extended missions, there are few mediums as versatile. There aren’t many mechs in the class this old warhorse would bother looking at over her in her day, and she runs even better once upgraded.
The Centurian, the first Mech I piloted in Mechwarrior 5, (since I never got to play MW 4, 3, 2 or 1). While I will try to tinker with the machines to try to optimize them there is one problem with the Centurian: I can't think of a way to make it better without changing the engine or adding Ferro Fiberous Armor and Endo Steel structure. The AC/10, LRM 10 and two Medium Lasers are good enough for most applications. If I am trading mechs to get heavier mechs all of the light mechs would go, the Black Jack and the Centurian would still remain while most other medium mechs would already be out the door.
What makes The centurion interesting, is in that each weapon has a *role* in its performance. The LRM’s pester the enemy until you get into medium range, wherein the ac10 also gets involved. Then, when getting into close range, the LRM stops, and the ac10 and mlas start to sing, all the while, the whole way through machine is doing at least up to 10 damage per range.
I personally prefer the enforcer/dervish combo over the centurion/trebuchet mostly because the centurion lacks jump jets (don't know about the trebuchet), and the enforcer is better focussed on it's designated role, and the dervish can actually, you know, defend itself.
I'm surprised that the Centurion didn't become a universal mech like the Sherman became for the United States in World War II. In my primary merc unit, I'll pass over heavier and flashier designs if it means I could add a baseline Centurion to my TO&E. Centurions and Valkyries are my jam.
How did the company get the lore so correct with this mech. Its the first mech noob players tend to get. Its also a must have in players' merc units for the very reasons stated in the lore. Heck the name is a byword for a common soldier!
Hello Mage Leader. I have been playing since Battletech's release in 1984, and with a 10-year hiatus during the Dark Age Era and the early Blakist kerfluffle, I have been playing for nearly 40 years now. The Centurion was a favorite Mech of mine, along with many others. Some of which my fellow players laughed at (like the entire OST line of Mechs). I did a few things that most other players never thought of. I was the first in my playing group (around 20 people that met at a gaming shop every weekend) to use the 'Locust Swarm' to good effect. But one thing I did that did the most for my Merc Company, was to only buy and use Mechs in certain weight groups. Without getting into the gritty details, I mostly bought Mechs that could share the same engines. One of which was the Nissan 200. This made design and redesign of Mechs easier, since they all shared a common Fusion Engine. It also simplified my logistics by limiting the number of Fusion Engine types I was using. Were there exceptions to the rule? Of course there were. But I tried to 'make up' for it by having multiples of the Mech that used that particular Engine type, and designing others that used it as well. 200 divided by 25 is 4. So, a standard 200 Nissan Engine can move a Mech 4/6/0 at the very least. I can also be useful to a Locust, since 200 divided by 20 is 10, and thus the movement profile would be 10/15/0. This sort of math was applied to other Engines as well. Another way to simplify logistics was to double down on certain weapons types. Sort of like how Kurita is known for PPCs and Davion for Autocannons. Myself, I tended to restrict myself to weapons I could get in massive numbers... LRMs, SRMs, Medium Lasers, Large Lasers, and then fill out with the rarer ones like PPCs, AC-20s, etc. But back to the 'humble' Centurion. I found the mix of weaponry to be mostly effective, and the relatively thick armor a blessing. For its weight, the 4/6/0 speed was not a burden during combat, since most mechs using the 3025 era tech moved at around this speed. Eventually, I dropped the LRMs and their ammo, as well as the pair of Medium Lasers, for a single Large Laser and additional heat sinks. This produced a variant that was combat effective, easy on the heat scale, and still durable on the battlefield. This allowed me to have a Centurion that fired off its AC-10 and Large Laser every combat turn, and run, without generating excessive heat. That alone improved its combat effectiveness, and it was merely a tactical decision to remain at those weapons most effective ranges to make them as effective as possible. Since the Large Laser was Center Torso mounted, the Mech could lose both arms and still maneuver, and fight effectively. Yes, when TRO 3050, 3055, and 3057 became available, I let my inner geek out to play. Designing Mechs to utilize the new Tech available. Even the Centurion felt my touch. I won't go into details here, since the missive is already nearly a tome's worth. But I will say that I used the newly available tech a tad bit better than others in my playing group, and gained a reputation for efficiently designed Mechs. Have a good day, and keep on making videos.
Yeah but the difference between this series and Joe's mental stability is, I know this series is going to be great and progressively get better over time. Joe's mental health isn't going to get better lol
The Centurion is a tough one for a medium. Its a great pick early on in Hbs battletech and MW5 cant wait to get it on the tabletop. Keep up the good work mage! Cant wait for more Twist of the knife.
Love the Centurion. 3025 era generalist mechs just do it for me. Orion, Stalker (including the supremely balanced 4P), Wolverine, Thunderbolt, Centurion are usually making my company list. Recently I've even grown fond of the Grand Dragon, which seems to solve the problem of the Dragon being under gunned.
Old reliable indeed. CN9-D is one hell of a machine though. 97km/h top speed with the same load out as the CN9-A although modernized. It's such a great tool for just about everything. It feels more like a light heavy Mech than a medium at times and if it really needs to be replaced I usually pick up a Thunderbolt.
Ah yes the centurion, having served in a lance filled with light mech, this beast is the hardest to take on especially with how often they are paired up with smaller faster mechs
Mechwarrior 5 made me fall in love with this medium mech. Great starting Mech, or low tonnage mission. It reminds me of the Titan from the old Earth Game, Command & Conquer: Tiberium Sun. I would not mind having a few Lance's of these boys defending my lands.
The Centurion might be my favorite medium mech; an excellent all-rounder that can brawl, snipe or skirmish depending on how you load it. Additionally with a pair of medium lasers in the CT you have to core it or decapitate it to stop it fully.
The Centurion is just enough. And that's good. Not too fast, nor too slow, good firepower, but not overwhelming, good armor, but not an Atlas. It is worth its price tag and will get the job done with enough support around it. Used one once and although I lost, it worked wonderfully, even taking on two Vindicators at a certain point.
I have a thing i say about various mechs. "I dont have a single bad thing to say about the ___" The centurion is definitely one of those mechs! Its SOLID!
The centurion is the warfighter as I like to call it. It’ll fight your war and still be raring to go for the next one time after time. The centurion is also a really great mech to teach you how to let your missiles do the talking before you get into auto cannon slap fighting range
This is random generic comment. I'm sure you've heard this before, but I love what you do. You're way of presenting things makes me smile and ROFLMAO. However I wish one of you two favorite mech analysis people would do the Goliath and or Scorpion. And again on a separate note I do feel a little forlorn. I miss playing Battletech. My gaming group dissolved years ago and not one available anymore. Well that's enough of my whining. Keep bringing out primers and giving me a little humor. And the mental ideas for if another group ever does show up.
I'll admit that the Centurion is a decent, serviceable machine for it's purpose. But I've scrapped enough FedRats piloting them to know they're not the end-all of medium mechs. I'll take a good old-fashioned VMI-made Shadowhawk any day of the week over these Davion tinker toys.
