Quick note: Don't think of the AC20 so much as a shotgun (big bore, short range, makes big holes, and low ammo capacity) so much as the mech equivelent of the 105mm howitzer mounted on the side of an AC-130 gunship. Suddenly, the short range of the artillery in that kind of vehiclular configuration makes sense (after all, the high damage can be attributed to being able to fire all those shell types in a direct fire role...)
This does make sense. It's a low-velocity, autoloading howitzer being used in the direct fire role. Of course, in MW5 you can actually lob your shots to hit targets much further away if you know what you're doing.
Hey! As a Canopian I resemble that remark boss!!! Anywho, I’ll admit my bias right now. My mercenary company spent most of my career on border security, anti-piracy patrols, and that kind of shit in the Periphery. Not a lot of urban combat for us but these things are everywhere in the periphery since they are locally made and cheap. In my experience they are good reliable line filler mechs, if you’ve got a medium lance that needs one more machine or a light lance that needs a bit of weight behind it. A Hunchback is always a good cheap option to stick a pilot from the reserves or a Mechwarrior apprentice in to fill out the roster. But once again I’ve rarely seen it used in its proper role so that’s my bias. Honestly I’ve fought against these things more than I have beside them. Pirates, Bandits, and Slavers love these machines. They seem to think that the bigger and scarier the gun the better the pilot. Fucking jackasses, they never seemed to figure out that a big gun makes a big target to shoot at. Anyway, thanks for the lecture boss!

You’re trying to use it in a offensive role. It’s a ambush monster. Have light mechs lead opposition to it, use it to take out similar weight mechs, and when exiting cover always exit on the right side.
@@baker90338 you are absolutely correct. I forget that my play style is that of a berserker most of the time. I will take this advice into consideration and reevaluate. Thank you for the suggestions!
I'm sorry, but I think the Hunchback is more of a Lore Mech than anything else. In a Lance vs Lance Game a Hunchback is not a good choice, to slow and no range. In a Company vs Company the Hunchback can be a choice, but again, it is limited. Bigger games are rather rare. Even company vs company wasn't that common as I played Battletech. The best use so far is as an cheap Sidekick Mech for your LRM Boats, if you play that way, or as an distraction for newer or hot headed players, both are likely to over react. Best way to counter a Hunchback: Ignore it if it stays behind the heavier Opponents in a bigger group, but as soon he dashes forward, try to make it a target for several long shots and dismantle it. If it is used seperatly on a flank or to hold an object, attack with fast light or mediums with Lasers or PPC. A Wolfhound won't destroy it quickly, but you can stay outta Range an slowly take the Hunchback apart. Or an cheap Sentinel with an L-Laser, a cheap solution. Even a Wasp or Locust can annoy an unsupported Hunchback. Stay outta Range until you win initiativ, bypass (best on the left side!) so he can't hit you with the AK20, and fire 1 or 2 medium lasers. He can just fire 1 medium back. Again, you want destroy the Hunchback, but only a really good Player will just ignore the light Mech, most will be distracted. A fast light or medium with an L-Laser is a nightmare for an Hunchback in an 1on1!

When you gotta min max weaponry. You hunchback. The lowest effective amount of mech with the largest amount of weapons.
4:19 HA! GOT'EM!
should have took that archbishop offer.
I always call it the hunch butt. That's funny to me
Hunchback is amazing! Stuff it with lasers and armor and watch it go toe to toe with heavies... Or just stick to using AC20, still amazing.
I love the Hunchback, how else could I bring 50 medium lasers on a 50 tonner?
4:05 lmao was that a shotgun
How do journalists become an adult in America and not know the difference between a shotgun and a rifle
I was thinking the same thing. People who can't properly identify or describe a weapon should be prohibited from commentary on it.
OH MY GOD lmaoooooooooo
This one is a HIT!
4:53 play the board game of BattleTech at the hobby store yesterday, and one of the other players had two 4P Hunchbacks, can you say laser spam... Those things were actually really. effective 🙂.
The first time I chose to field a Hunchback, it gave a 1-2 punch to a Summoner's cockpit. The last thing to go through that clanner's mind was Coventry Metal Works logo. Thanks for the video, chief. Also, what are the odds of making that music video at the start of the MW5 Beginner's Guide a stand-alone thing?
... beautiful...
AC/20 superiority
Hunchback with 9 lasers (8 medium and small)
But why does the cannon box block part of my screen? Only hunchback things.
3:20 Is that a D.C. Bruins animation?
Just what exactly DOES punch at it's own weight?
My Hunchback IIC with 2 clan ultra Ac 20s and 2 clan Er medium lasers is an adorably stupid thing, Perfect for any suicidal mech warriors in any "Totally not bate" beta lace/stars I might bring along if I got the points
I disagree on the armor. 10 tons of armor on a 50 ton mech is pretty great in 3025. That’s as much protection as a Warhammer.
I got my hands on the multiple medium laser version. Used it once and cooked my pilot.
Traded it for an Ac 20 version. Realized that armor was sacrificed for that gun. Got it blown off halfway through the mission.
Is this a mech for masochists? Is that all it’s good for?
You’re trying to use it in a offensive role. It’s a ambush monster. Have light mechs lead opposition to it, use it to take out similar weight mechs, and when exiting cover always exit on the right side.
@@baker90338 you are absolutely correct. I forget that my play style is that of a berserker most of the time.
I will take this advice into consideration and reevaluate. Thank you for the suggestions!
@@passgo8507 it’s basically a anvil to a locust’s hammer. I’d recommend it in mesas and similarly complex biomes terrain wise.
@@baker90338 lot’s of useable cover and concealment locations. Basically how one should play an urbie.
@@passgo8507 an urbie can’t punch a atlas in the groin.
Nice one Mage, should do a primer on the Hermes II.
Otherwise I’ll have to civil war you. It’s just good business.
The hunchback is easy you just stomp on the go pedal and hit the big red button over and over while screaming witness me
The 4P is way better than the AC variants. Fight me on it
I like this mech all because of its big gun.
Also, what animation is that at 3:20? That looks really cool
Frihet by D.C Bruins, its incomplete but a tearjerker
Check out D.C. Bruins. His stuff is fantastic.
@@DCBruinsMedia One of these days we should team up. A little bird told me you're a fellow FRR fanboy.
@@DCBruinsMedia Tons of storytelling potential. Tons of opportunities to make audiences cheer and/or cry. Tons of disappointment when the Clans ultimately neuter them.
@@mageleader3699 But, they end up merging with Clan Ghost Bear, get a good chunk of their sovereignty back, and are now one of the stronger/more stable nations in the Sphere, even after the...craziness of the current era.
Any one else here preferring a Double SRM6 instead the AC20?
SRM damage is too spread out. One AC20 round can totally destroy an arm or leg on a mech of equal or lower tonnage of the 4G.
Sigh I just dont like the Hunchback. Its slow, short ranged, and has low ammunition. The Centurion is more useful than the Hunchback as it has greater range from an LRM-10 and AC-10.
The HBK-4J model removes the AC-20 for 20 long range missile tubes and 3 medium lasers.
The HBK-4P replaces the AC-20 with 6 additional medium lasers.

You have a fair enough take on the mech, but why do you have to ruin your videos with political junk and misogynistic memes? Can't we just have Battletech?
I don't believe I did either in this video. Could you be more specific?
I agree, he should instead spend more of his videos sending terroristic threats to people he disagrees with.
@@delta5059 How's Blaine's boots tasting this afternoon, delta. By the way, who are you, are you an alt for someone I know or are you just a Pardoe simp who follows me arround?
@@mageleader3699 Sure. First, you had to take a shot at common core. Why? What does common core have to do with Battletech? Second, you had to make a commentary on the media and gun control. Why? It's just an unnecessary injection of your alt-right news preferences. Nothing to do with Battletech. And Third, you referred to the Magistracy of Canopus as "Damn space sluts" Needless use of misogynist language. There are your examples, I think they are pretty clear.
@@faithmcclosky4528 Taking a shot at Common Core isn't a political statement, it's a statement of fact. I said nothing about gun control. I simply showed a humorous example of the news saying that a shotgun was an AR-15. As for the "space sluts," I can't think of a more fitting term for a society whose primary export is orgasms. All that being said, I appreciate the feedback and will take it into consideration when making my next video. Thanks for commenting!
