I saw Joan live twice in the '80's, and also feel very fortunate. I have been to hundreds of concerts in my life and seeing Joan live in 1983 was one of the few I recall vividly and in detail.
Joan was just out of this world I swear she was the influence for the great Tracy Chapman I hear so many elements of her music in this song. At 69 now this song melts me as much as it did back 1976
She never got the recognition in the United States she deserved. I was given a free listen to her debut album when it first came out, and her voice and music blew my mind. She was the queen of my dreams and my turntable for some while. Sidenote: that's one of the great opening lines to any song.
I saw her in San Francisco About 1982. The vast majority of the audience were women. Back to the night cassette was constantly in my car stereo until I got eaten. That was in the. 70s.
Please Beth, do more. Joan Armatrading had so many beautiful songs, loved them all. Feeling my age now! Please do more of her, you won't be disappointed!
Legendary producer Glyn Johns (producer and engineer for Zepp, Stones, Beatles, The Who, Eagles, Dylan, Ronstadt, Clapton, Clash, Steve Miller Band, Small Faces, Easybeats, Blue Oyster Cult, Midnight Oil, Humble Pie, and many others) said this album (self-titled Joan Armatrading) was the best album he’d ever been associated with. That’s some massive endorsement from a giant in the industry.
The Beauty of this tune is that this song offers no expectation for where it'll actually take you, which, I believe makes for the best songs, if not then the greatest love songs. Okay, while the whole song gives for me this undescriable feeling for ehy it moves me so, brother its just everything,! BUT, I swear when she gets to that "Thank you" part there is literally this magic there, this spell that's casted over you and it continues thru out the rest of the verse and on.
A rich, expressive voice perfectly suited to writing songs unique in capturing the thrill & vulnerability of falling in love. Just a unique artist I wish more people were aware of.
The local library brought in her first couple of albums in the Seventies. I checked them out just to check them out. She just blew me away. She is a criminally unknown in North America.
Joan Armatrading has been one of my favorites since my teens. My wife gave me the album love and affection when I emigrated to Canada. On a lighter note you make me feel old when you say its one of your Moms favorites 😃 I was a professional musician and educator for over 40 years.
This is a beautiful song. Joan Armatrading is not only a great singer but also a very fine guitarist. Her song, "Show Some Emotion" would be another good one to listen to, showing the more upbeat and funky side to her work.
"Show some Emotion" is my favourite Joan Armatrading tune & one I play a lot on vinyl 45. Her voice just melts me. I was lucky enough to see her (again) a few years ago, very bluesy & superb guitar work.
Joan has been at the very top of the British music industry for most of my life. She is part of a very elite group who can compose, sing and play. In fact today will be the premiere of her symphony no 1 - which rather puts her into a class of her own. Apart from all of that.... I just love her music
Saw her twice in concert. Fantastic singer/songwriter/guitarist/piano player. Astonishing performer. The standard by which all others should be judged for talent.
SO glad you have got around to Joan Armatrading, after Joni Mitchell my favourite female singer. She is such a lovely person too. Saw her several times through her career up to a few years ago during her final ? World Tour. Another superb tune from that era, & live, would be "Show Some Emotion" with gentle moments like in "Love And Affection" but also some up-tempo moments that let that smile really shine. Your insight & reactions are much appreciated.
Joan was my obsession for a season. I soaked in all of her various styles on her great albums. The Shouting Stage is a superb showcase of her diversity
I remember going to see her play live here in London back in the '70's and she absolutely blew me away that night. She always had this kind of self consciousness about her, and her music reflected that very often. God bless her, she's still criminally underrated and unappreciated but she's one of the finest we've ever produced.
Was introduced to Joan, when station in W. Germany. Back in 86. She's my favorite female singer and artist. I was listening to her this afternoon. B4 seeing this post.

Great reaction and analysis. Joan Armatrading is one of those artists who I only hear once in a while in passing and I always enjoy her music, but I've never taken a deep dive into her catalogue. I think I need to fix that now.
I so love this song! I particularly love the opening line: *"I am not in love, but I'm open to persuasion, east or west, where's the best for romancing with a friend?"*
Been a fan of joan amertrading since I heard this amazing song . And im still enjoying her music to this day , she's originally from St kitts , a daughter of a capenter , she's also a sagittarian, guess why , I understand her music so much ! Many thanks again.
Great songwriter and singer and a wonderful guitar player. Like Joni Mitchell, she created her own tunings and threw all sorts of time signatures in for good measure/
Saw her in mid-80s at the Convention Center in Monterey CA. That concert is the one that kind of broke my ear drums and gave me tinnitus for the rest of my life. The mix was piercingly sharp and loud. But it was worth it! I absolutely love Joan.
Holy moly. This is one of my favorite songs ever. I don’t think she has the best technical voice and that was never the point, but the song is just unbelievably great.
Thank you, thank you, thank you xxx! I've enjoyed her voice since I was a teenager but have neglected her in recent years. This is a lovely reminder of how much I love her sound, and you've helped me better understand why I do.
Yayyy!!! You did it for me, thank you soo much! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. Loved Joan 40 years ago, still love her now. The others here are right to invite you to listen to some other songs. Joan brings that same beautiful rich tone to a diverse array of music styles. Down To Zero; Show Some Emotion; Drop the Pilot.. and many other great ones, it’s so hard to choose! Thanks again❤️
Believe it or don't, that's Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon on "The Wire") providing the baritone male voice singing "oh, give me love" during the chorus. It's the perfect counterpoint to Joan's stunning vocal performance on this track.
Joan is still performing, check this out from 2021, her voice hasn't changed a lot - the first song is "Love and Affection": th-cam.com/video/cv9njhy6O4E/w-d-xo.html
I was just wondering if you would react to Stay by Shakespeare's Sister. I just heard a clip from it while watching a video about the Eurythmics, and learned that Dave Stewart co-wrote it with Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit. It's absolutely epic, and one of the few songs that I cannot listen to as it makes me cry so much for people that I will always miss.
It surely has to be Dame Joan before too long. I'm going to her album signing tomorrow in London. Not sure if I'll meet her, but if I do I've thought of what to say.
I have to give a credit to the saxophonist Jimmy Jewell - who also plays on albums from McGuinness Flint, Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance, Gallagher & Lyle and Andy Fairweather Low. among many.
Hey Beth, British actor who plays James Bond (Daniel Craig) said the following about this song. When asked by Steven Colbert what is his favorite song of all-time he said this song Love And Affection by Joan. Here is the video of him saying that. Your Welcome...th-cam.com/video/wlBKROHEnIg/w-d-xo.html
Hi Beth! I know you’re a fan of Chris Stapleton. Have you played the video of him and Justin Timberlake doing Drink You Away? I believe they did it at the CMA Awards several years ago. Pretty incredible. 👍😉
It would be interesting when you’re doing another Armatrading song to talk to the cultural mix of Brit/Caribbean when you refer to contrasting styles and tempos. I was listening to her back in my teens in Australia but I’ve no idea what the scene was there at the time but I imagine people must of been captured by that mix. A little while ago I checked back to see where she was and saw that she still took the stage at Glastonbury which I think is a big thing. It was nice to know that she was still appreciated after so much time just as she should be. Far better than Joni Mitchell imo.
Love your reactions and the artists you choose. Could you please consider reacting to the song Stay by Sugarland? I believe Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland has the most amazing voice I've ever heard. Thank you and keep up the Amazing work

Joan Armatrading is one of the few artists who can literally bring me to tears.
The greatest British female singer/songwriter of all time
Joan is an often forgotten treasure. Had the luck to see her live, and what unique singer songwriter. Thanks for shining a light!
Me too, saw her in 1977 when she was playing the support act for Supertramp. It was a fantastic concert.
I saw Joan live twice in the '80's, and also feel very fortunate. I have been to hundreds of concerts in my life and seeing Joan live in 1983 was one of the few I recall vividly and in detail.
Me too ♥
Saw her live July 1983 and July 1986. A special talent who is adored by her fans❤
Joan was just out of this world I swear she was the influence for the great Tracy Chapman I hear so many elements of her music in this song.

As the original requester, that’s what I say too!!!
YOU SHOULD FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR AGE. YOU SHOULD FEEL GREAT ABOUT YOUR AGE. ❤🎉😅😊❤🎉😅😊
Joan is such a beauty, so many years ago but she shines, complex chords, effortless guitar, strong voice, a deeply romantic artist!
Thanks Sean !
I so appreciate this info. I also include this album in my top 5 all time. I saw Joan live when she was touring with this album
The Beauty of this tune is that this song offers no expectation for where it'll actually take you, which, I believe makes for the best songs, if not then the greatest love songs.

Ghasp! This was 47 years ago??? I absolutely loved this song when she released it!
The most underrated British singer of modern times. Absolutely beautiful song. Heavenly voice.
She's an amazing singer-songwriter and musician.
What strikes me most about this lovely performance is how much Joan was enjoying every moment ^_^ 💜
Ah u on the hurry up harry
A rich, expressive voice perfectly suited to writing songs unique in capturing the thrill & vulnerability of falling in love. Just a unique artist I wish more people were aware of.
I remember her other hits from the 70s and 80s, especially Show Some Emotion, Me Myself I, and Drop the Pilot. Terrific singer-songwriter 😊
I want the key to your heart, I want the key to your heart.... I loved that album. 😊
don't forget Down to Zero
Willow was the one for me!
The local library brought in her first couple of albums in the Seventies. I checked them out just to check them out. She just blew me away. She is a criminally unknown in North America.
Saw her live in Burlington Vermont USA. When she sang Willow I did not see one person not standing, not singing, not crying with joy.
Joan Armatrading has been one of my favorites since my teens. My wife gave me the album love and affection when I emigrated to Canada. On a lighter note you make me feel old when you say its one of your Moms favorites 😃 I was a professional musician and educator for over 40 years.
"If I can feel the sun in my eyes and the wind in my face/ why can't I feel...love" one of my favorite lines ever
I fell in love with her music in 1979 with Show Some Emotion. A unique and powerful voice and I appreciate the commentary, which was spot on.
Wonderful that you brought Ms. Armatrading onto the channel! She's a delight to listen to!
Judy Collins too??
Lucky to see Joan twice at the Albert Hall. Bloody marvellous. Lovely vocal tone.
I saw her twice in the US - NYC & DC. Some of my favorite concerts ever
So evocative of my youth - saw her several times during the 70/80s. Also that video!!! So 1970s
Great reaction. A super songwriter, singer, and guitarist. Have loved her since the 70s.
Thanks for this. One of my all-time favorite performers. Have had the pleasure of seeing her numerous times starting in the 80's.
She is a brilliant guitarist too. Try the song Willow by her.
Joan was my obsession for a season. I soaked in all of her various styles on her great albums. The Shouting Stage is a superb showcase of her diversity
Mine too! I’d go to our local record shop once a week, inquiring about a new album from her. Obsessed , I was !
I remember going to see her play live here in London back in the '70's and she absolutely blew me away that night. She always had this kind of self consciousness about her, and her music reflected that very often. God bless her, she's still criminally underrated and unappreciated but she's one of the finest we've ever produced.
Love Joan Armatrading's music… her unique voice.
Nice blast from the past, Beth. Hadn't heard/thought of her in some time. Her vocals really are pleasantly distinctive. Mellow but powerful.
Joan is awesome! Thanks for the review.:)
Joan Armatrading is awesome. She is right up there as a performer/ songwriter with Carole King and Joni Mitchell.
Every coed in the 70s had at least 1 JA album in her dorm...😊
Joan is magnificent, a national treasure, thanks for the review
Was introduced to Joan, when station in W. Germany. Back in 86. She's my favorite female singer and artist. I was listening to her this afternoon. B4 seeing this post.

Great reaction and analysis. Joan Armatrading is one of those artists who I only hear once in a while in passing and I always enjoy her music, but I've never taken a deep dive into her catalogue. I think I need to fix that now.
Absolutely!!
I so love this song! I particularly love the opening line: *"I am not in love, but I'm open to persuasion, east or west, where's the best for romancing with a friend?"*
That's not the line!
.... for romancing.
With a friend I can smile, but with a lover I can hold my head back...
Joan and Julie Driscoll are from the late 60's and early 70's. Two of my faves. Each unique, and captivating.
Flight of the Wild Geese from her is just amazing, it always makes me cry when i hear her sing it
Been a fan of joan amertrading since I heard this amazing song . And im still enjoying her music to this day , she's originally from St kitts , a daughter of a capenter , she's also a sagittarian, guess why , I understand her music so much ! Many thanks again.
Thank you for listening to Joan - such a wonderful musician = beautiful singer, great guitarist and phenomenal songwriter
Speaking of 'Joans' I would love to see more of Joan Baez, particularly "Wild Mountain Thyme ".
Saw her at Blusfest Australia in 2013, her voice is still stunning, loved every minute of her show! Definitely an under-appreciated voice these days!
Great songwriter and singer and a wonderful guitar player. Like Joni Mitchell, she created her own tunings and threw all sorts of time signatures in for good measure/
Now you know why we loved the 'Midlands housewife' for decades. A musician's musician.
This film was shown in movie theatres in Montreal in 1976 before the feature was shown.
Which film?
@@bluemoon6579 the Joan Armatrading film. It was 1976 or 77 and the world hadn't been introduced to MTV. We didn't call this a music video.
Great in 1976 and she hasn't missed a beat...2018: I like it when we're together and 2021: Already there. Just doesn't get much better than this.
Utterly brilliant. Her first album - self-titled - is one of my desert island discs. I wore the grooves off it when it came out in 1976!
The "self titled" album was her 3rd release
I am glad Beth picked up on the "unexpected chords", every guitarist I knows is amazed by that choice of chords.
I had the grace to experience Joan live in Germany in the 80s and it was great
The low "LUV" tone is actually because she's a brummie not a deliberate affectation...
love your reactions and joan singing this song is such a classic. very enjoyable thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you xxx! I've enjoyed her voice since I was a teenager but have neglected her in recent years. This is a lovely reminder of how much I love her sound, and you've helped me better understand why I do.
Amazing song and vocal

Joan Armatrading and Rostropovich are the two whose art gives me shivers
To must words honey, Just listen her music is almost 50 years old. Like Joni Mitchell in her way of being a singer song writer.......Timeless
she was incredible! that first opening line though!!!!!!!! whew!
The guy who did the low bits is now a guest commentator on the proms etc.
Believe it or don't, that's Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon on "The Wire") providing the baritone male voice singing "oh, give me love" during the chorus. It's the perfect counterpoint to Joan's stunning vocal performance on this track.
She's definitely the Tracy Chapman of England. Love her voice.
Me gusta los diferentes tipos o estilos de música que reaccionas en lo personal lo aprecio bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
Like this song but for my money “strange” and “love by you” are her best, absolutely love her.
Joan is still performing, check this out from 2021, her voice hasn't changed a lot - the first song is "Love and Affection": th-cam.com/video/cv9njhy6O4E/w-d-xo.html

Such a difficult song to sing. Saw her at Glastonbury more than 30 years after this recording and she was still great.
It surely has to be Dame Joan before too long. I'm going to her album signing tomorrow in London. Not sure if I'll meet her, but if I do I've thought of what to say.
Just came from your Ren reaction and Wicked Game cover and see you’re doing one of the best songs ever 😊
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there additional vocals during the chorus: *"Give me love!"* before Joan continues *"Love with affection"*
I have to give a credit to the saxophonist Jimmy Jewell - who also plays on albums from McGuinness Flint, Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance, Gallagher & Lyle and Andy Fairweather Low. among many.

I love her! And I lover your cover ❤
First time I heard Tracy Chapman I thought, “oh, Joan has a new one”.
Try Save Me, Dry Land, Warm Love, Baby I, I Need You, Barefoot And Pregnant, The Shouting Stage, and some live version of Willow - to name but a few ❤
There is no one who can beat the live sound performance of Turkish artist Harun Tekin.
Hi Beth! I know you’re a fan of Chris Stapleton. Have you played the video of him and Justin Timberlake doing Drink You Away? I believe they did it at the CMA Awards several years ago. Pretty incredible. 👍😉
I wish Joan would have renewal. I love her, along with Tracy Chapman

hi i have one request. can you make a reaction to justyna steczkowska sanctuary live?
I'm curious about your opinion on her vocals
❤
I have this album.
Love your reactions and the artists you choose.
Could you please consider reacting to the song Stay by Sugarland?
I believe Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland has the most amazing voice I've ever heard. Thank you and keep up the Amazing work
When i get it right, will you tell me please...oh i wanna get it right...i wanna know..
You get two words to describe Joan's voice in this song... I choose "Accurate articulation"!
Hi Beth why did you remove your cover of "Fields of gold" it was so good?
Joan is amazing. Please react to down to zero by her ❤
Tone and style remind me of Tracy Chatman (spelling?). A little.
Close...Chapman. Tracy could be Joan's child...their styles, voices and themes are so similar. Think Joan influenced Tracy from day one
Joan was far earlier.tracy was dubbed"tracy armachapman.u had her debut album.
Your Mom a Hippie or an Ultimate 🥏 player??
Do reaction on Nelson - Love and affection 😊
Please Beth Pleaaaaaaase do Los Jaivas, they are progressive, folk, psicodelic, and no rules.

Not sure if they're best for her as the vocals aren't really the point. But it might be fun!
