Hi Jay and Amber! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. You are absolutely correct in what you said about the awesome Joan Armatrading from Birmingham, UK. This song was from 1975 and I would suggest you check out another big hit of hers that's a bit more upbeat. It's called 'Drop The Pilot' and it's from 1983. Æx 🙏
I was blessed to see Joan once on her Hearts & Flowers tour at a club in Columbia MO. Such a random place to see her, as she rarely toured the States back then and usually only in major cities, so to see her in my small Missouri college town was an amazing treat, when I had really started getting into her music. I got to thank her briefly after the show and she was so kind. She is one of the most underrated artists of the 70's-2000s. My favorite albums are her 80s albums The Key, Secret Secrets, The Shouting Stage, and Sleight Of Hand, all from her more "rock" period. She is a true gem!
Astounding original song and arrangement, once heard never forgotten another absolute gem from the 70s. Great in that acoustic guitar too and still a great performer
My late father was a huge admirer of Joan Armatrading and would listen to this track over and over. This reaction took me back to my childhood, hearing the sound of Joan's amazing voice drifting through the house. Thank you guys, I had almost forgotten how amazing this track is.

WOW! I am SO glad you are getting to Joan Armatrading, . She has so many great songs, this is one of them. "Show some Emotion" is another, there is a live version, from when she was quite young. The energy & power she shows is awesome.
Such a classic song. 8 years ago my husband & I had tickets to see Ray Davies from The Kinks and Joan Armatrading in concert. Ray Davies was absolutely amazing singing all my favourite Kinks song, but sadly Joan Armatrading had to cancel on the day as she was unwell. Great reaction as always, wishing you both well and sending peace
I went to see her in Boston around 1976 during an early season blizzard. Due to the weather, there were only a few people there. Bless her heart, Joan Armatrading didn’t just show up but she put on a full performance for over an hour. She makes a twelve string acoustic guitar sing beautifully! Great artist! 🌸✌️
Saw Joan in concert back in the day. She played the ones I knew - 'Show Some Emotion' was her big one for me but she played a ton I had never heard and they were all great. 'Cool Blue Stole My Heart' stole my heart and maybe broke it too. Amazing British performer, guitarist & song-writer.
Saw Joan in the mid-seventies when she was just coming through. I can still remember the enchantment of her voice live and on disc. Thanks for bringing that all back!
...aaaaahhh! There is closure, and then there's this. I have waited so long for you to get to this beautiful person, so THANK YOU for this. There are artists that know and use their craft, and then there's this person that truly cradles her craft; the tenderness and reverence she shows with each track, wow. Looking forward to you hearing more from her :)
I could not click on this fast enough, love, love, love Joan Armatrading and bought and played this LP to death. Thank you for bringing her back into my life, this track was so far out at the time and still holds up ✌️
Yessss, Joan Armatrading (you got the pronunciation correct, Amber)! I first heard "Love and Affection" back in my college days in the early '90's. Such a beautiful voice.
Thanks for finally listening to Ms. Armatrading. From the same album I love "Down to Zero", "Help Yourself" and "Somebody Who Loves You". I'd also love you to react to Nanci Griffith ("Love at the Five and Dime" or "There's a Light Beyond These Woods, Mary Margaret").
Joan Armatrading has a song called “The Shouting Stage”. It’s from a 1988 album of the same name and is such a beautiful song with Mark Knopfler (from Dire Straits) on guitar. It’s about how, in a relationship, the final stage before breaking up is called the shouting stage, when every other form of communication have broken down and all a couple has left is screaming. After that there’s nothing left but to separate.
Saw Joan in concert in Brisbane, Australia. :) I was up against the stage, arms resting on the stage. Joan Armatrading trod on my hand. Lolol Unforgettable.
For Female Friday, if you find the time, check out Syreeta Wright with her collaboration with the well-known pianist and recording artist Billy Preston with their huge smash hit single "With You I'm Born Again" released back in 1979. I first heard her music in the early 70s and loved it. I watched some videos of hers recently - she only writes love songs - all these years. Some of her music really grows on you. I still love the oldies.
So glad you covered Joan - she's one of the all-time greats and was _huge_ here in the UK in the late 1970s and 1980s. Her song "Me, Myself, I" got me through some pretty dark teenage times, let me tell you. I remember, she put out an album called "The Key" which had a drawing of her on the front with a key on a chain round her neck, and the first 1000(?) LPs had an actual key laminated to the front cover (any of those that still have the key on them have got to be hella collectable now!). She was being interviewed on BBC Radio 1 about it, and the DJ asked her where the album title came from. Joan said that her manager noticed that she always wore a key on a chain around her neck, and she pulled out the key to show her. The DJ trying to be all arty-farty said something like, "Oh wow, so what is the key then? Is it the key to your heart?" Joan (I imagine) gave her an old-fashioned look, and said, matter of factly, "Nah, it's the key to my front door..." 🤣
So glad you discovered her. I saw her in concert a few times back in the day, and she was always amazing. Other song suggestions: Willow and The Weakness in Me.
When I moved to California in 1976 Joan was very popular, I love her voice and her song's she's mesmerizing. Peace✌️ and Love❤ your 70 year old forever hippie Gary😊 great reaction 🤣
Joan Armatrading is such a singular artist and a favorite of mine since Love and Affection first came out. Other favorites are The Weakness in Me and Down to Zero.
Joan Armatrading is up there with the legendary singer-songwriters. Many great songs to check out, and she's one of the best live. Whenever I feel like I'm not sure what to listen to she's on a short list of artists to turn to -- and I really only know her mid 70s stuff. "Down to Zero", "Tall in the Saddle", "Show Some Emotion", "Willow", "Mama Mercy" etc.
Glad you reviewed this one. I was lucky enough to see Supertramp at Coventry Theatre, and Joan Armatrading was the support act!! Just her and her guitar. She sang Love and Affection - and I fell in love with her forever - bought her album the next day. Very shortly after, it was released as a single. A great artist and much loved from the get go in the UK Oh and Supertramp were awesome too - as good live as on their albums. Saw them again late 70s, and at the Royal Albert Hall in the 90s. Saw Joan again in the 80s. Fabulous
Thank you both soooo much for that reaction. It's 7 a.m here in the UK and that was like a big warm cuddle, and at the risk of oversharing, i really needed that. ❤❤❤
The sax solo here is by noted UK session player Jimmy Jewell, who featured on many top-notch albums in the 1970s. Although Joan appears to be playing live in that clip, what we hear is actually the studio version of the song. It's from her self-titled third LP, which was deservedly voted Britain's Album of the Year in 1976. There isn't a dud track on it.

...aaaaahhh!
This genius is from Birmingham, England where I proudly hail from….. Joan is a wonderful performing I’ve seen her many times ❤
JOAN ARMATRADING , phenomenal singer, songwriter and guitarist , when music was soooooo good !
You gave the people what they wanted!! Yaaayyyy!!!
Saw her on the tour for that album,it was an amazing evening
I can’t state enough how blessed I was to grow up in the 70’s.
Thank you for reacting to Joan Armatrading! She is wonderful!
Saw Joan in concert in Brisbane, Australia. :) I was up against the stage, arms resting on the stage.
Joan Armatrading trod on my hand. Lolol
Unforgettable.
Simply one of the greatest songs ever written and performed...
Knew you'd love it even more once the sax kicked in! The weakness in me and Save me :)
yes, the sax was just for Amber lol.
Wow! I can't believe I've never heard of her, and that song seems so before its time! 🤎
One of my fav albums of all time. I've loved her since 1976.
One of my favorite songs ever ever ever. The parts are super interesting and the lyrics are top tier. Great reaction. Was very happy to see this.
This is my favorite song, of hers. I've been listening to her, since the 70's. You're pronouncing it correctly.
For Female Friday, if you find the time, check out Syreeta Wright with her collaboration with the well-known pianist and recording artist Billy Preston with their huge smash hit single "With You I'm Born Again" released back in 1979. Syreeta's voice was exceptionally beautiful. R.I.P. to both talented souls. 🙏👠💋🎤🎹🎹🎵🎶💎🔉📻🎧
Joaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnn!!!!! She is spectacular. I got to see her twice in concert. Amazing!
Never heard of her, did she have hits?

Me, Myself, I

I'm Lucky
I love it when you call me names
And don't miss these...
Willow
Show Some Emotion (the live version on YT is insane)
Down to Zero
The Weakness in Me ("But I need you. And you...") - one of the best lines ever.
I have wanted to recommend this and/or Willow but didn't know how. She is absolutely sublime. Thanks you both so much!
Same!
Willows my favorite
Is it the key to your heart?"
Joan (I imagine) gave her an old-fashioned look, and said, matter of factly, "Nah, it's the key to my front door..." 🤣
So glad you discovered her. I saw her in concert a few times back in the day, and she was always amazing. Other song suggestions: Willow and The Weakness in Me.
"Drop the Pilot" is one of my favourite Joan Armatrading songs.
When I moved to California in 1976 Joan was very popular, I love her voice and her song's she's mesmerizing. Peace✌️ and Love❤ your 70 year old forever hippie Gary😊 great reaction 🤣
She released her first album the year I was born 1972 and she's still going strong. Much love to Joan 😍😍
My first time hearing her and I LOVE IT!!
Joan Armatrading is such a singular artist and a favorite of mine since Love and Affection first came out. Other favorites are The Weakness in Me and Down to Zero.
Ooh, I'd forgotten all about Down to Zero!
She has written a symphony & had it performed at The Royal Albert Hall London She knows nno boundaries.
A great artist and much loved from the get go in the UK
Oh and Supertramp were awesome too - as good live as on their albums. Saw them again late 70s, and at the Royal Albert Hall in the 90s. Saw Joan again in the 80s. Fabulous
She's Incredible it takes me back when it first came out and stamped it's place in my life and time good times.😊
Finally Joan. Saw her life 3 times and had a meet and greet. She got me through many tough times in my life. ❤❤
I’ve been waiting!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!❤
Saw her at the Newport Folk Festival in the mid-90s. Beautiful weather, three or four beers and got lost in her tunes. Glorious day.
Love Joan Armatrading. This was a hit in 1976 (in the UK) this song seemed to be played all the time on radio during that heatwave summer.
Joan is brilliant, very unassuming, she goes under the radar but so original.❤
