@@RobertWrightOneManCovers I like how Oleta Adams said Rolands voice was, "So Wide," it just fills space and so many adjacent tones. Roland talking about this song though said that he simply couldn't sing it as it sounded 'wrong' and then asked Curt to give it a go and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" sounded perfect.
I listened to this song before you where born...I guess, and yet I learn from your reactions and appreciate songs more despite my age. Great reaction! 👍🇵🇭🙏
For me, this is THE iconic song of the 80's... awesome vibe, the kind you rolled down your window and cruised the coast, or hills, or on your patio... Their "Songs from the Big Chair" album spawned a few hits as well as this song; their sound is timeless. There aren't many songs that get you to bop along, Bethany, so anyone who's new knows right off, you can appreciate a great groove when you hear it. LOVED your reaction, keep the hits coming; your choices are memory churning and thought provoking.... now THAT takes talented observations and SOLID musical knowledge on which to found it all. PEACE!!
I was a performing musician in the 80s and covered many songs of that decade. If someone was ask me to name one song of the 80s that I enjoyed the most, or one of the most iconic (of not the most iconic) it would be this one. What a great song from great artists.
I had a similar reaction to hearing that performance - it's funny how much I've grown to love this album, which was released when I was 18 and fully engrossed in Heavy Metal music. Even then I had to reluctantly admit that they were really good.
same, same. I was a sophmore in HS, and I was deep into Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, etc. Our French class took a field trip to Biltmore Castle in Asheville, NC. We all rushed through it and got bored. A group of us all just went out in the middle of the front.....lawn? Someone had a boom box and I happened to have this cassette, so we all just laid down in the grass staring at the clouds listing to this cassette. Fond memories.
I love Curt and Roland. They aged gracefully. I would go see them in concert anytime. I love how you critiqued them, so kind, well, there is nothing negative to say. What a great group.
I'm surprised you didn't say anything about the unison between Curt and Roland. I think it's one of the hardest things for two singers to get perfectly and they're still nailing it after all these years. 🙂
I saw Tears for Fears in 85 on the Big Chair Tour of which this song comes from as well as The Seeds of Love Tour in 89. My favorite period of Tears for Fears- 83-89. I wish I could have seen The Hurting Tour in 83-84.
Wow ! I was prepared to be disappointed for some reason but Curt still sounds amazing. I love how a song can instantly transport you back to the glory days of our youth.
Thank you for the nice reaction. Tears for Fears are my favorite artists of all time. Their first 2 albums (record/LP) were the first ones I bought way back in 1985 on my 14th birthday! I still have them today and still listen to them eventhough I also have them on cds. I've watched them perform live twice already, and if ever they come back here to Toronto again to perform, I will watch them for a third time!
Gotta say I'm speechless too. I haven't heard these guys since the 80's and I gotta say this is sooo sooo sooo sooo similar to the original. Full credit to these guys after soooooooo long. Welcome to my childhood lady. Luv this stuff.
I'm glad to see these two guys back together again. They ended up hating each other. That tension also gave us some of the greatest harmonies. One of the gifts from the 80's. ✌

I graduated high school in 85. Needless to say, Tears for Fears was was hot and one of my favorite bands at the time and 38 years later, they are still one of my favorite bands. All that to say that I had the privilege off hearing them in concert last year. Their newly released album in 2023 is excellent. Something I usually never say about older bands releasing newer stuff. Everyone wants to hear what made them famous. They played a lot from their new album but played ALL the famous 80’s songs. It was amazing. Probably my favorite concert I have ever attended. If they toured again I would go in a second.
Curt Smith always had it easy, as Roland Orzabal said -- "I really have to work at it, but Curt opens his mouth and it just comes out." As he's gotten older, he's pulled his foot off the gas a bit and become much more surgical in his tone generation and pitch (just look at the concentration and focus on his face), countering the depth of his aging voice with clarity and lightness, which (whether conscious or not) is a brilliant way to extend the life of a voice. These guys are an absolute treasure and possibly at the zenith of their live power as we speak. I just saw them months ago and the whole show was a revelation start to finish.
Sometimes you have to let the song go and comment after.Bravo! Roland Orzabal et Curt Smith for being part of my life and still have the same voices.Wish you well.
I’m an ‘80’s kid. This is the one song that when I hear it takes me RIGHT back to where I was as a kid. When all of my family were still here on this earth. A beautiful Easter morning. A very comforting song. ❤
Curt Smith is absolutely awesome..... He is an underrated musician who has some great albums. And while I'm at it, Daryl Hall could learn a lot from the way Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal resolved their differences years ago. They are two mature, accomplished musicians.

Coming home from work, discovering that you had been taking on analysing one of my absolute favourite songs, I had to watch your reaction immediately, of course. Sheer pleasure seeing you delight in this wonderful performance, Bethany, seeing you getting into the groove from the very beginning, seeing your eyes light up - to partake in someone's absolute joy like yours is just wonderful. It's not getting less when we are sharing it, it's becoming more! Thank you Bethany, you totally made my evening!
They are my daughter's favourite band. She's 19. Interestingly, she got interested in Tears for Fears when Curt Smith popped occasionally on the television series Psych. He was hilarious on that show. Anyhow, we went to see them in Toronto not too long ago and was amazed at their musicianship and their voices. One of the best concerts i have seen in my many years of concert going. Blew me away.
I never appreciated these guys enough when I was young and they were in the charts (showing my age there) but I’ve got into them much more recently and so glad they’re still going and sounding so good. Gives all us old guys hope! 🙂
Thrilled to see you analyze TFF ! Their songs, especially this one, bring me back to high school and college. I saw them in concert this summer and their voices were spot on, music was tight, and audience was mesmerized and singing along with every song. I get lost in the lushness of this song! Another to check out is Sowing the Seeds of Love for a Beatles-esque tone and melody.
All respect to Curt Smith, I would love to see you react to a song primarily sung by Roland. I thing he is a much more dynamic singer and his voice is insane with lots of range. I've seen them live a couple of times in the last year and he still sounds unreal. I would suggest grabbing a live version of Woman in Chains with Oleta Adams. Some serious vocal chops are being displayed in that song.
I’ll add “Break It Down Again,” from first album after Curt left gets me every time. Roland’s got such a warm tone and strong foundation. I appreciate Curt has a very lovely voice, but Roland’s grit does it for me.
I really enjoyed your analysis. Tears For Fears are the best band to come out of the 80's. In my opinion Curt has a lovely voice, it can sound soulful in parts. Would it be possible for you to do a similar analysis on Roland. I think Roland has the broader range, his voice is more suited to songs that need a powerful delivery. Head Over Heels would be a good song to analyse. It would be good to hear how you feel their two voices combine, they have sung a few songs the whole way through together, the latest being The Tipping Point.
I saw them live when they were touring this album in the 80's. Honestly, they sound better now then they did back then. His vocals have more roundness and warmth than back then.
Always been a great song, with the strong vocal "married" to a monster groove that stays with you. Shout-out to the drummer for matching the fills on the record, too. That's not as easy as it looks, I can tell you! Roland's guitar playing was spot-on, as well. TFF was always a very "composed" band. The song "Woman in Chains" is not my favorite, but the studio version really builds beautifully, with layers of instruments and vocal tracks that explode at the end. Well worth listening to on good headphones. Roland sings that one with a tremendous assist from Oleta Adama, who just KILLS. And, because they loved Phil Collins's drum fill on "In the Air Tonight," they brought him in to play starting halfway through the song. It's just a magical use of the studio, overdubs, synth voices, percussion, and layer after layer of sound.
Drummer here, yes this is a deceptively difficult song to play, probably because the original used a drum machine. The groove is easy until you have to put in the hi hat accents off the beat. Damn near impossible! The drummer here is not playing the full part, he’s only doing the accents (half the notes).
Wow..... did not expect that....I almost accused them of lip singing...that is as good as it has ever been...unbelievable....very nice reaction Bethany and thanks for your spot on commentary....😂

Great review of a beautiful voice. Thank you. Roland also has a very strong and unique voice. Among the million requests you get, consider “Break It Down Again,” one of my TFF favs that came off the first album after Curt left. Great lyrics and vocal drama and transitions. Thanks!
This is my favorite song of all time. It strikes a chord so deep within me that I don’t know quite what to do about it. It’s an achingly beautiful, bittersweet song.
I love Tears for Fears, they're my favorite band. And It warms my heart to see them singing at that age. I swear to god, when the time comes for them. I will legit cry my eyes out.
Written by Roland Orzabal, Chris Hughes and Ian Stanley. Wikipedia has the origin of the writing. Orzabal dod not like repeating 2 strums throughout each verse. But, he relented. Good 👍: biggest song from Songs from the Big Chair 💺 🤯. TFF still sounds on fire 🔥 . Curt Smith still sounds great 👍 Do also analyze Shout, Break It Down Again or the other songs where Roland Orzabal is the lead singer.
Thank you, Bethany. This was a super experience having you react and analyze this performance. Your enthusiasm and pointing out details that I'd not thought about, make for such enjoyment. Oh, and Curt still knocks this out of the park. Please do a reaction to AURORA's 'Your Blood' music video ... and/or maybe the acoustic performance at a Meet & Greet in Bejing a few days ago.
In my opinion the other guy Roland Orzabal is even a better singer. He's easily in my top 3 with Peter Gabriel and Freddie Mercury. You need to listen to songs like "Shout", "Sowing the seeds of love", "Elemental" or the amazing duo "Woman on chains" with Oleta Adams.
NICE!! Being of early Rock and particular Heavy Metal this is one of the few of this genre style I actually liked. Just don't tell my friends 😉. Going to have to give this a closer listen including lyrics. Thanks Bethany GREAT CHOICE of video also! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
I was on the fence with a lot of music from the 80’s for a long time. Mostly in the 2000’s but I relearned to appreciate it. Sounds crazy since I’m 69 and the 80’s was the MTV years which was always on to see the next big video or your favorite song. But in saying all that this song in particular is one of my favorites. It’s nice to see and hear them again and sounding marvelous.. Great analysis.. I may have mentioned this before but I honestly enjoy your facial expressions during your viewing, a lot going on in your head and I always appreciate your expertise.. 👍
I saw this last year was taken back by how his voice still sounded amazing. Please have a look at Matt Corby - Brother (Like A Version) - live on Triple J. You won't be disappointed. Absolute masterclass in singing and you will cry :) Thanks for doing what you do, great channel and I learn a lot.
I don't know why he didn't want to be "the guy from Tears for Fears", but I can't judge another man's internal battles. I think the guy from that band ROCKS.
Tears for Fears has a wonderful array of memorable songs. I've listened to them all and I saw them perform at Red Rocks which was unforgettable and indelible. In some of the darkest times in my life, though, I've often turned to "Goodnight Song," which is in my opinion (along with some songs from "Seeds of Love") one of the most soulful and heart penetrating songs from "Elemental." I'd love to hear what you think of that particular tune. Thank you for your Channel and I love your analyses.
Still one of the greatest bands that ever existed. Tears has ever remained on my New Wave song rotation in my vehicles and home. 🤟

Roland also has a very strong and unique voice. Among the million requests you get, consider “Break It Down Again,” one of my TFF favs that came off the first album after Curt left. Great lyrics and vocal drama and transitions. Thanks!

295, Have always loved these guys. Their music gives me goosebumps, my soul coming through.
This is my favorite song of all time. It strikes a chord so deep within me that I don’t know quite what to do about it. It’s an achingly beautiful, bittersweet song.
This song was played so much on radio when I was small. Had it on repeat also on cassette tape. Classic.
Curt Smith still sounds great 👍
Do also analyze Shout, Break It Down Again or the other songs where Roland Orzabal is the lead singer.
Brilliant choice. The passage of time has been very kind to Tears For Fears and their musical catalog.
Love love love, tks Bethany!
They still sound great.
I love this band!
please check out the working hour!! you will love Rolands voice!!
the song is timeless, and the signing is still amazing, great song.
30 + years and can still drop it live like that, god it was a great time to be growing up!
They both sounded as though time stopped! Amazing
One of my favorite songs! I love your song reviews.
I love her reactions. Especially on music from the 80s.
Very few vocalists keep their craft together over decades, These Guys do. Another one is Jon Anderson (of Yes). 🎯👍🎶🖖
It's his natural style, and lots of rehearsals. That's what makes stars.
I love your breaking all this down and I see what your explaining makes me appreciate all singers so much more, may I ask what mix voice mean?
I love how you just start off smiling and sound so happy…. lol. Cutie.
"Who am I kiddng?" You're a joy to watch!
Great performance. The only thing missing was that little cowboy with his toy gun, from the original video. 😁
Wow! They sound amazing!
one of my favorite songs... ever
I cannot believe you haven’t done LP!! Lost on you is my favorite song of hers.
Tears For Fears and The Outfiled are my fav 80's brittish bands, As for TFF, Curt is great but to my taste Orzabal's voice its what identifies TFF.
Siguen como el vino. Y esta canción aparte de ser hermosa musicalmente no es fácil
80's songs are glorious!
I don't know why he didn't want to be "the guy from Tears for Fears", but I can't judge another man's internal battles. I think the guy from that band ROCKS.
I was in highschool when they came out, look old ,really old ..but still sound like they did back in the day ,if not better ...
Almost 40 years later and they both still sound fantastic. In fact they almost sound better now in my opinion.
Their overall effect, imho, is warmth with textural depth, a crispness, freshness and passionate lyric atmosphere.
Tears for Fears one of the best and always will be The Hurting great album and track
They came to California, I'm really enjoyed the show, they sounds exactly the same as 40 years ago, I love tears for fear
The room acoustics, the mics, the engineer mix and thru the lines to video final out.
