Who can not watch you in the garden without smiling at your sheer joy and exuberance? I started my food forest just over a year ago in Tucson, Arizona (zone 9a). I put some store bought green onions in the ground in the back yard on 7/11/2021, and tossed some kitchen scraps on the ground next to it the next day, and said, "Voila! A compost pile!" (You have to get a start, and then improve, right?)
    Well, now my front, back, and side yards are becoming a food forest. I have two hills (mounds) I made to grow Avocado and Citrus trees on. They have lots of Sorghum and Milo growing on them, and already produced nicely some Amaranth plants (tasty leaves!). I have 3 apple trees growing from seeds (2 Pink Lady and a Fuji) that are doing very well. I also have a Sunshine Blue Blueberry plant and a Pink Lemonade Blueberry plant (yes, because of you!) doing nicely here in the Sonoran Desert!
    Oh, yeah! We have around 50 Moringa Trees growing. A few in flower (very tasty), but they are an answer to prayer. Because eating 6-10 cups of green leafy veggies (salad) a day is my diet foundation, I knew I would be growing Kale. I have only 1 plant, but it is in year 2! A Dinosaur Kale variety, and most exceptional taste! I was sitting around one day thinking, and it occurred to me that there had to be trees that produced edible leaves, so I put that on my prayer list. Two days later, God turned my attention to the Moringa Tree! A couple days later He answered my next prayer for seeds! Oddly enough, my daughter had the seeds. Who knew? LOL
    Oh, I have Luffa gourds growing. One plant has grown right to the top of a date palm tree! It is bearing fruit that makes it look like Christmas decorations. And 4 Fig trees (3 varieties). We do not have a Tuck yet, or chickens, but someday...
    Now that I have binged your channel, I will be leaving more comments for sure. Love your grapes. I have some growing (vines; no fruit yet) mostly for the leaves. They are dazzlingly delicious.
    Well, we... OUT!

    My grandmother grew up in the countryside of the state of Virgi,. She and my great-grandmother used to make pig feet in the oven. It's awesome to see how others on the other side of the globe in a different culture make them. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

    Never had the white bitter melon but one favorite recipe (and honestly one of the only palatable ways to eat bitter melon) is to cut it THIN and mix it with your scrambled eggs. My auntie in the Philippines would swear on the health benefits of “ampalaya” and would cook this for me often.

    With those bitter melons , if you slice them up put them in a strainer sprinkle salt on them leave them for 20 mins or so it will leech out some of the bitterness then just wash off the excess salt then cook them , many ways to use them .

    I laughed out loud when you said every time you turn your back you get robbed (by Tuck) haha! That grape harvest was amazing. Are you a little bit relieved when the season is over and you can rest? My garden is probably 1/100th of yours and it gets that way for me at times but this year, I actually got a few cucumbers and I'm not sure yet, but I think a tiny yam slip i planted last year that never did anything (and I thought I had dug up) might have survived the winter by some miracle and re-grew - in Canada? I'll be shocked if i manage to dig up a few yams. Took a cutting off of it, just in case, for next year.

    James, if you don’t have one, invest in a steam juicer. You can get grape juice with little active time in the kitchen. Can go straight to the canner and give you organic grape juice all year long! I yield 1 quart of juice per 4 lbs of grapes. 🥰

    Hi James, thank you for another inspiring video! Just love your enthusiasm and love Tuck too! I know you grow more food than your household can consume and you've talked about not letting things go to waste and giving much of it away. I also know that you don't harvest all that's ready in your videos for fear of redundancy and length of video, but I think it would be really interesting to see how and to whom you give the excess food to. Also the complete harvest each time, after the fact. Just an idea for some different content.

    Tuck ❤️❤️❤️ and the apprentice JP always makes us jealous. We have a 1200 sq ft garden space, that has helped reduce our grocery bill. Just wish I had been into gardening longer. We’re still learning, fighting worms and Rollie pollies. Any advice on pollies would be helpful. Got the worms mostly under control with BT and a black light flashlight.

    • @pristineperistome5696
      @pristineperistome5696 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do the rollys eat your veg? I thought they mostly target dead decomposing matter and maybe fresh seedlings. I don’t know THAT much but I’m guessing they’ll mostly work as a decomposer on the ground level.

    • @ryanricker6556
      @ryanricker6556 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pristineperistome5696 they’re absolutely eating my cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, strawberries and kale. At least I see them on the leaves near missing chunks. They’re not as bad at the cabbage worms, in that they don’t annihilate the plants entirely. But they do enough damage to slow it down pretty bad.

      A lot of people learn to ferment, pickle, can and freeze. Check out Bubblebeet's channel. He basically freezes all his produce in an easy way.

    I love that grapevine canopy! Do you ever just sit at that table and have lunch? Maybe a few glasses of wine with friends?

    Hey James and Tuck! Can you do a video featuring the chickens? What you give them out of the garden, and how they help you clean up the garden at the end of the growing season [That is, if you let them have free range in the Fall]?

    James, the bitter melon will turn yellow and then start to split open. The seeds are covered in a red pulp. I soak in salt water to help remove the pulp. Dry and store for the following year.
