  • Welcome back to RBR, and to the C Class, aka the Baby Benz, #MercedesBenz most popular model with almost 11 million units shifted since the 201’s introduction in 1982. The new W206 model is a reborn #Luxury car with swathes of tech stolen from the recently released S Class.
By the way: Big thanks to Gokhan at “TheAMGLounge” TH-cam Channel for helping with Driving shots, and the car from Mercedes Benz Slough Vertu dealership!! :) His channel:
    / theamglounge
This car is the first classic model series by #Mercedes to be 100% electrified in some manner, with ever car featuring a basic hybrid set up in the minimum, and then the full plug in hybrid models. It’s also a completely 4 cylinder family, including the upcoming AMGs as we’ve all heard.
Today I get my first drive in a C300 petrol AMG Line, Premium UK spec. I’ll also take you through a trip in the past as we look at every C Class before this, then see what makes the new car tick, along with a drive!
The history of the Baby Benz is super important and the story begins with a car that wasn’t called a C Class, the W201. It was this baby Benz that was the first to bring the lauded Benz quality and luxury to the compact saloon segment. Much like our recent cars, it took cues from the then 2nd generation S Class down to a new compact segment. It brought innovations, the main being the first small saloon with a Multi link rear bringing cornering stability at a time when the E30 had a semi-trailing arm setup. It spawned the infamous DTM with the 2.5-16 4 valve engine set up, the performance version better known as the Cosworth, a car a young Ayrton Senna used to outgun seasoned champions on the ring and later forge his career.
The next was the first C Class of it’s name. Carrying forward the same ethos of the 201, it was barely larger but brought far more space for the passengers along with safety innovations like standard airbags. This gen gave us our first in house AMGs ever, with the 36, 43 and bonkers special order C55. It was also the first time we had the estate!
203 came and grew the line up to include estate and weird 2 door hatch: to better battle an equally weird BMW. Then 204 - peak C Class? I’d argue that’s a place shared by both this and the successor 205. It was also peak AMG, with the axe murderer 6.2 true C63 rearing it’s nasty looking head.
205 was a series I think we’ll look back at as one of the greats. Yes it had styling heavily borrowed from S Class, but the quality and shape of the interior looks modern even today, enough to knock spots off the current 3 Series if you ask me. 100kg lighter, 360 cams, driver assistance tech, ambient lighting, so much to make it a do everything car. It was a scary time for AMG fans as this was the turbo charging gen, but we got the greatest driving C63 ever in the S model coupe.
Our New W206 is based on much of the same MRA platform as the 205, called MRA2, just heavily modified for the future of electrification. The car has grown in length by 2.5 inches, but is shorter in height.
As every C is hybridised in some way, they run on a 48v system plus ISG throughout all the petrol and diesel models. This system gives immediate power of 20 BHP and 200nm and 27bhp of overboost. The 9 speed transmission has been revised to work with the hybrid system, and the 4MATIC has been advanced to allow higher torque levels. Finally we also have rear wheel steering of up to 2.5 degrees. Though, this c300 weighs in at 1675KG, a good 100kg heavier than the last gen, and you can take that across the board.
Our car today is a 2.0-litre C 300 which has 254bhp, and 6.0s 0-60. Popular will be the C 220d, a hybrid 2.0-litre diesel with 220bhp. Then the Proper Plugin Hybrid C300E with 68miles range.
Today we’ll also check out the design of the AMG line car, both inside and out! But will the C still be great value for money as a mini luxury car? And does it still do the luxury job properly? Let’s find out!
Up next on on RBR is the new C43 AMG review! And the AUDI RS3 review + MUCH MUCH More!! Subscribe to support us and see them first. :)

I think the best Merc steering wheel was found in the cars from 2018-2020. Looked great and just the right balance between physical switches and capacity buttons (there was a two which you swiped to choose options on the main infotainment and driver’s display).

The biggest pity fall for this generation Merc is interior quality, everything creeks every material feels cheap, all you get for “luxury” is a screen, which will undoubtedly look dated in 5 years.
On the other side, have a look the previous E or S class, it still looks modern and luxurious 7 years after.

The interior of this car looks and fits better in the C class than the S class.
I have a W222 and my uncle just got a W223 with the White interior.
The S-class interior is supposed to be wide sweeping from left to right. The W223 screen wastes too much space while the widescreen of the W222 didn't.
The S class should have the EQS’ HYPERSCREEN.

Definitely agree on some of the notes, I do think this is a step too far into the everything is touchscreen operated direction. I would like to see more of a blend between touch screen and real buttons with tactile feedback. Also agree that the doors are very bland and needed something else added in the design. I will be interested to see your review on the new 330 model for BMW as a comparison to this.

I drive a 2018 A250 AMG Line with Adaptive Suspension which in my opinion is a must if you like a balance between sport and capable handling and comfort. During the last service of my car I got an A220 non-AMG loaner without Adaptive Suspension and it was so soft and waffled through corners like a full-size 1970s American landyacht. The Adaptive Suspension in my A250 is amazing. When I want to drive in Comfort Mode (which I do 99% of the time) the car is comfortable BUT still handles nicely around corners. In Sport Mode the car completely changes personality: the steering wheel response becomes sharper and the suspension hardens up so you can drive much sportier and aggressively.
I guess the moral of the story is: a standard modern Mercedes’ will be soft and comfort-oriented. If you want a sportier experience without getting a genuine AMG model, get the AMG Line Package and the Adaptive Suspension.

I think the exterior and interior design are HUGE upgrades over the W205, fills all the gaps and improves on the 205's quirks and shortcomings, I just think it's becoming too expensive now for really what's just a 3 series competitor. Although once people's 2-3 year leases are over, these will become INSANE value for money. So, I'll see you in 3 years, 206.

Straight pipes and throttle are funny, smoking tire is driving, jayemm can give more of a rounded take based on a luxury Enthusiast vs manual person. I like Savage geese detail and humor. Rbr has amazing production and covers the types of cars I really like. Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, really german cars. But I also like that people focus on older cars, jayemm made me really like, the 996/612 scag. For Mercedes, I just like the brand design choice. Sitting in the car feels good. But when I see a person revisit an old car, I realize I can never buy something new when there are so many fun cars out there to own. But I love seeing Rbr cover new cars. Point is, everyone has to pick a lane, not enough time in the day to do everything. But it's good lots of people have different things they focus on so there is a wide variety of coverage and coverage types.

I am a huge Benz fan and have ordered over 7 factory brand new self specd out cars from Benz. And I have to put this out here, the door panels are the most horrible design yet to be seen in a Benz car and the air vents does not fit in a C Class its something that could be in a B Class. My verdict is that the designer of the interior, seats, door panels needs to resign immediately! This is unacceptable and a shame to this brand, the quality on these door panels are on pair with a Kia. It's all squeaky and pure soft plastic I can't believe, Mr AMG did not poke on that matter.

From folks on this page, how does this compare to the BMW 3 series?

    • @RemoveBeforeRace

I like the 3, luxury wise it’s a more classic take than the C. I believe you can option adaptive suspension too, which the C doesn’t allow in the UK.

please review the BMW 5 series(530d or 530e) and compare it to the E class and the Audi A6 (you have never done a comparison video ) because not a lot of people buy high performance cars but they want the luxury and comfort of a nice car without being too flashy or loud.
AND also i think the current 5 series is the best looking BMW in the lineup

No surprise the ride is uncomfortable although I thought the C may be better than the A.
I changed my E350 Cabriolet for an A250 w177 and the comfort level is shocking.
My wife comments every time she gets in how she hates how uncomfortable the car and the ride are. She still has not forgiven me for getting rid of the E350 Cabriolet.

The steering wheel definitely needs to go away from this type of buttons. I was watching the head of the AMG one project say that they put regular buttons on the wheel because it would be too distracting without them. I get a c300 isn't an AMG one but if the company knows the buttons aren't optimal, why are they forcing it on us?
