I feel like these two hats don't do crochet justice, it's not a fair comparison in the slightest. For starters, you generally wouldn't crochet in the round for a hat unless you were making it for a baby. Classic autumn/winter hats are made by crocheting a rectangle of fabric and then stitching it together with a darting needle. I've seen some absolutely gorgeous crochet hats with a tight weave, it all depends on the weight of your yarn, the size of your needle, and what stitch you use. (Plus I'd argue the most basic stitch in crochet is the single crochet, as it's the one taught to beginners. Double crochet does tend to have more holes, since you're effectively just making taller stiches.) And that's not even getting into the absolutely incredible patterns you can make with crochet. If you're really skilled, you can make lace and doilies and other intricate, dainty things. That's why crochet was first created actually: it was an old societal norm that women who were less wealthy would knit due to practicality, and those better off would crochet to make decorations and give them something to do. So I'd argue that crochet, done well, can look just as good as knit.
Victoria Kathleen I agree. The crochet hat looks very basic compared to the many hats I've made. I have made a few hats starting with a rectangle and sewing it, but I prefer crocheting in rounds because I suck at sewing and making pompoms. In my opinion, crochet is more versatile. There is more variety in crocheting than in knitting. And you are less likely to drop a stitch and have to start ALL over. Also, Tunisian crochet, although I really hate it since I can't do it, looks like the awesome love child of Knitting and Crocheting.
Thank you. I tried knitting when still a teenager and never really cared for it. Later tried crochet, liked it but wasn't able to afford it until lately so I'm still a beginner as such but the hats aren't a fair comparison by any means. Thanks for that great history lesson!! 😉
Im only trying to learn to knit to make this scarf I really like. I've been crocheting for 6 years and picked up the skill from my grandmother, so I'm a bit biased towards it haha! Hopefully I can catch on to this too! And I agree, that hat does not do crocheting justice. It sounds like she is a bit more favorable to knitting, but to each their own.
When I crochet hats I usually work in the round, but even doing that it all depends on your materials. For example, I use a smaller hook for most of my hats, which gets rid of the awkward gaps. Plus, the simplicity also depends on how advanced your pattern is or if you’re not using a pattern, how advanced you choose to make it.
If you want anything close to a usable answer to your question of "Which do you prefer..." you must provide a picture of the SAME pattern using the SAME yarn not two completely different styles.
If you compare a single crochet stitch (instead of double) to a standard knit stitch, the size comparison/speed of workup is much more comparable. I would agree crochet is easier and more beginner friendly, but knit is better for making things last and stretching. Personally I prefer crochet because it's more convenient and easier to stop and go, I find it overall way more versatile than knitting. Plus I can use Tunisian crochet to get a knit look if I'm really going for that :)

As someone who only crochets, i agree. Knit fabric looks cleaner and smoother. Crochet fabric looks chunky and bulky and doesn't really suit some things like socks and sweaters.
I am like Mary Shirley, I crochet from a very young age and just recently in the last two or three years started loom knitting because of my new physical disability. I have tried for years and years and I cannot needle knit. Some things I loom knit, some things I crochet. I'm a recovering yarn addict and because of so many types of things you can create I always have a project to work on. BTW, I love crocheting hats with a single crochet row and a half double crochet row, not as many big holes. Thank you for a great video.
Been crocheting for past 6 years and I love it. I tried knitting years ago, but I found it frustrating in keeping up with all the stitches on the needles without dropping them, so I put the needles down and stuck with my hook. This year I'm going to give knitting another shot. We will see how it goes. I love that you can make just about anything with crochet.
I prefer the look of knitting and I prefer knitting in general cause that's what I learned first. I'm learning to crochet now and while I recognize that it's super fast, I am not a fan of the look for garments. I prefer it for bags and accessories.
I've tried over and over to learn how to knit... I just can't... With crochet? There isn't anything I can't do. I actually have an online store where I sell things made by me, all in crochet... I'm still trying to learn how to knit ( my mom does it in her sleep, why can't I?????)
SAME my mum knitted all her life, i just can't.. it seems so complicated and stressful to keep all the loops on the needles. it looks so fragile, what if you want to put it away and take it out again.. I'm a person that's stressed out by "fragile" things so easily, and I can't relax until it's in a stable state (finished). Also very complicated to learn vs crochet
Thank you for your video. I’ve been knitting for a couple of years still consider myself a beginner. I’ve tried to crochet but just can’t seem to get the hang of it. Friends who do both say knitting is less stressful on their hands. I’d love to hear what your readers say. Thx again:)
I know basic knitting and agree that certain knitted items look better but I love crocheting WAY more for all the reasons you've gone through. I do not have enough patience to fix a knitted project when I can do the same project faster when crochet.
For me crochet done to look like knitting wins hands down! All the benefits of crochet without the headaches. Slip stitches, half doubles in back loops etc. People often comment my work looks knitted.
I like the look of the knitted hat I too learned to knit from an early age and am only just self (you tube) taught, crochet is easier to take on the go with only the one needle whereas you have to carry two with knitting x
Ive perfer to crochet, but i like the look of knitting. Unfortunately I can't get the hang of knitting, so I've been going with the good ol' medium point of tunisian crochet
Hi I think knitting looks more professional, that's why I learned how to knit. I've been crocheting since I was very small. .. thanks for your videos. .
I didn't knit for years because it was so much easier to crochet. My mom taught me how to knit, but I never kept up with it because it was before the internet and I wasn't around other people who knit. I started knitting in earnest January 2017 and haven't looked back. I love it! Now, I knit and crochet. You crochet mostly the way I do except for the way you hold your yarn. Whatever works for each individual is what counts. Right now, I am knitting my first scarf for my hubby using the brioche stitch...just one color. I will attempt 2 color brioche at a different time. I knit Continental, so found the brioche stitch very easy. I just need to find a good video on putting in a lifeline. Thanks for doing this video!!!
Not to be the nerd here, but the primary difference is their thermal capabilities. Obviously the holes in crochet will allow more heat to escape. But understanding how important quality yarns and wool's should be a top priority too!! Awesome job! I watched the whole thing. haha
Wow, poor knitting seems to lose on so many aspects, but what it wins though is its look, that's what matters for knitting I guess, and the tears and sweats part. I'm a knitter and for some strange reason, I find crocheting hard to grasp; I grew up seeing my mum crocheting and tried to learn it but never grasped it, but I picked up knitting myself and I was hooked ever since. I prefer to have live stitches for me to know where to put in my needles, whereas for crochet, I find it hard to keep track. I only know basic crochet to aid my knitting and I do agree with the things you said about crocheting. I too prefer the look of knitting, the fabrics are softer and more flowing compared to crocheted fabrics. I do wish I know crochet a bit better to be able to have a fairer comment, because I actually love the look of Tunisian crochet, that I can grasp pretty quickly. I guess some people are born to be a knitter, just a knitter, and others crocheters, heheheh. Anyway, we need both, they coexist for a reason, to compliment each other, where one is lacking in one aspect the other covers.
Hi Charlotte you are one awesome person..,my friend and i like the way you teach your knitting and crochet patterns..(slow and easy) thats what we like about you..thanks..keep up the great work..
Knit looks more like a professional fiber. I used to crochet. But arthritis ruined that for me. Always wanted to knit then finally took a class. It is easier on arthritis hands. Thank you for your you tube Chanel and a you do to make things easy.
I always find knitting easier! I've tried crochet many times but i could just never get the hang of it. I always wanted to learn to crochet so i could do amigurumi's. It's the making the stitches that I always struggled with.
this is my first "how to video" on the subject and I have never even considered doing it until today. I was watching CBS Sunday morning with Jane Pauley and she was interviewing Julia Roberts and Jane pulled out her knitting and Julia looked at it and said something like ..... oh Jane, you have a very tight stitch and proceeded to do some knitting on Janes project while they finished the interview and that "hooked me". hahaha ..... what grabbed my heart was that Julia put a little bit of herself into Janes project right there on the spot and there is something about the ability to have someone contribute to something that has literally, as you mentioned, my "blood, sweat and tears " in it!!!! It seems like a wonderful opportunity to do something for myself or for someone else that brings me joy and happiness!! So after my heart had been touched, I looked up videos And your video was the first one that popped up! It was longes of the 3 recommended but I liked that about your video because I wanted someone who took it serious. And wow, Your video was a joy to listen to and it was incredibly fun and educational! I actually busted out laughing several times and thats always a wonderful feeling. I'm on my way to amazon to order the crochet needle or hook , hahah not sure what its called ( yet ) and I will be back to your channel to learn more and participate. Thanks for helping me fall in love with crochet and knitting. I will follow your recommendation and learn crochet first. best wishes to you and everyone who reads this! JS
Yes your are right so im trying to learn knitting. Because i thought crochet not for clothes crochet for doily ,amigurumi ,bags But when it comes to clothes and hat knitting is number one
I like knitting more but I'm also starting to learn crochet. As for as the cast on in knitting, you don't have to do the long tail cast on. you can do another one that doesn't require setting aside a bunch of yarn and hoping you have enough stitches. There's other cast ons
I have been crocheting for a little over a year and LOVE IT!!! I have officially decided that I want to learn how to knit. Crocheting was frustrating but a wonderful experience! I enjoy it immensely! I am so nervous about knitting! lol I love the look of crocheted hats and scarves but as far as actual clothing is concerned, like socks or shirts, I believe knitting looks cleaner and more beautiful to me. I love making my own things! I want to challenge myself and need as many videos as I can get, so thank you for posting this! :)
I love Tunisian crochet. You can get the knit look and it has a thicker fabric with one hook. If you haven't tried it, please consider trying it. I think you might enjoy it. Your stitches are like semi live and fixing mistakes is Just as easy as crochet is.
This was a good comparison. I’m a newby at both, still at the oops, another mistake, with tight tension to top it all off stage. What good would my opinion be?! I’m grateful for everything! Great video! 😊
I have been crocheting for 8 years, and I just started to teach myself how to knit... Crocheting is 10x easier than knitting. However, the look of knitting looks better
When I knit in the round I only use magic loop! I don't switch anything! When I have to long tail cast on a large number of stitches I use 2 skeins at a time instead of estimating with one! Okay I prefer the look of knitting most of the time but I find crochet easier on my hands, faster and more fun! I do one project knitting and then one crochet then I enjoy both! I find my crochet projects take considerably more yarn than knit! I like crochet for summer projects with cotton, I also will never knit another blanket lol! I find crochet looks cool and funky, more relaxed. I find knitting looks more elegant. So it really depends on the piece you are working on! I love knowing how to do both! I knit a tight cotton tank over the summer but then it turned out to be too short! But my crochet saved it! I found an edging pattern on Ravelry and added to the bottom of the tank! It looks amazing! I love combining knit and crochet now where suitable! I'm knitting a long sleeved top right now, next is a crochet shawl for my daughters teacher!
I "learned" knitting first. By that I mean that I can make a square or rectangle with holes because I always drop loops and have no clue how to fix it. I also stab myself constantly. I tried knitting a blanket and it took me 1 month to do a 12x12 square. I was being extra careful because I didn't want holes. I thought that was dumb so I stopped knitting and put all my yarn in a closet for 3 years. I saw a video of a crochet snowflake and I wanted one so I went to a thrift store and bought a needle and made one and now I have a lot of crocheted things. My boyfriend is actually getting annoyed because it's all I want to do lol. It's very stress relieving for me. Knitting was not .
Kniting looks better for sure. I’m just starting out crocheting and my goal is to work up to knitting. Crochet is pretty straightforward. I also know I have already had tighter stitches than that crochet hat you’re showing
I personally prefer knitting I find it easier I can do both but I was taught to knit first so maybe that’s why but it’s hard to know edit: I personally prefer knitted hats as the stitching is tighter and more comfortable also it can be set down without being afraid of loosing your chain
It’s not fair that you used a very nice knitting hat and a not too pretty crochet hat. Anyone looking without listening to you would say knitting! There are crochet hats similar to the knitting one that you used. That would have been fair
I think you got one point wrong, crochet actually takes up more yarn than knitting because we're literally binding off every single stitch, that's why it looks so dense, whereas knitting is interlocking loops and binding off to complete the whole project. That's why knitting works are thin and airy. I somehow found knitting easier to understand than crochet. I don't know why. I watched my mum crocheting since young but never grasped it, but when I taught myself knitting, it clicked. I love working with two needles or more in my hands. I still don't get the full concept of crochet yet even though it's actually not that hard. I do Tunisian crochet though.
According to an article I read, neither uses more yarn than the other. I don't know that I believe that but there were some other facts that I found to be true in my experience so who knows, lol.
I prefer the look of knit as well for the same reasons. I learned how to knit in a club in middleschool but never got past rectangles because i always mess up my projects when i try to get complicated. Now I'm trying to learn to crochet stuff for my son
I knit and crochet. I am able to do a lot more on crochet since ive been crocheting longer then ive been knitting . But lately ive been expanding my knitting capability. Both are pretty easy to me.
I JUST started crocheting and I’m self taught via TH-cam videos. I did it for a hot second as a kid but was too antsy to stick with it. I’m 22 and I have generalized anxiety disorder and depression and it’s so far been insanely relaxing. I prefer the look of knitting but crocheting is much more doable for me plus a metal crochet hook at Walmart cost me a dollar plus $4 for a ball of fluffy blanket yarn 🧶
Most people who start knitting get frustrated and reading a pattern can be a pain. But once kitting is mastered it does get easier through time. It always best to practice new stiches before implementing into a pattern. Best of luck.
I do knit and crochet. I have found easy knitting and crocheting. I have found some patterns difficult in both and easy in both. I do like the look of knitting better in most things. I enjoy crocheting items. I agree crocheting if faster. I have to say depending on the pattern is how much yarn it will take. There are a lot of crochet patterns that are yarn hogs. When it comes to hats. Knit all the way is what I like for myself but crochet is faster and easier.
I agree with you, I personally like the look of knit items more than crochet, however, a lacy crochet like filet is beautiful as well. I like the look of knitting but the speed of crochet.
To answer the question in the title of the video, crochet is definitely easier for me. My Mum, Grandma and Nannie are/were all great knitters whereas I’m the black sheep hooker of the family 😂 I tried so many times to learn to knit and just could not get the hang of it! I think a question like, "which do you prefer the look of?" is impossible to answer tbh. I've crocheted both delicate lace work and thick, warm intricately cabled hats. One of the things I love about crochet is how much variety there is in the fabric you can create.
@@SlickRicShow people have actually experimented on this and found that it depends on the stitch. Crochet often uses a bit more yarn, but there are some knit stiches that use more than regular crochet. There's never a huge margin though.
Thanks for this great explanation!!! I will be starting this in the fall!! But I think I will go with knitting because I love the look and I will take my classes at Jo Ann’s and there are a few older ladies in town who like to help the young women at the community center so I am in good shape!!

It's easy to learn. Find some simple videos and start with a single crochet and work your way up to double and triple. I started out crocheting scarves for everyone years ago. My family got quite of few of them the first few years. :D

I like the look of both it depends on what look I am going for at the time I wear it. I do know how to do both but I am a better crocheter than knitter because of how long I have been crocheting and only taught myself how to knit 6 years ago.

I do both & I like both. They all have their beautiful & "ugly" sides (when your wrists are aching!). I use crochet to make cute toys & knitting for clothes.
okay using that goofy crochet hat to compare the end result of crochet to the end result of knitting is kind of a hit job against crochet. crochet can make very beautiful and professional-looking hats too, even my very first crochet hat was ten times prettier than the crochet hat in the video and people complimented me on it.
I can knit and crochet. But I prefer crocheting. Why? 1) less equipment. I can use one hook while working on multiple projects. 2) When you’re knitting, your needles need to stay with your project - so if you want to start a new project you need to buy another set of needles 3) I don’t like how when you knit, the project edges curls 4) crocheting is faster 5) I can create different shapes and patterns while crocheting
I like the look of the knit hat. However, I like many crochet stitches when making hats too. But the double crochet stitch is my least favorite one to use when making hats because its boring. It doesnt say fashionista either.
These are two very differently styled hats... Yiu really need to compare patterns that are a lot alike. Having said that, I prefer to knit mist of my hats.. I will crochet if I need lots of baby/preemie in a short amount of time..
Not all crochet stitching techniques creates holes and gaps. This video does not give a fair game. Now if you look up cable style crochet, the look dominates both of what you’re showing us here.

Alexandra Pereyra I feel the same!!! I’m pretty decent at crochet but cannot knit to save my life
What is your website to view your crocheted items?
SAME my mum knitted all her life, i just can't.. it seems so complicated and stressful to keep all the loops on the needles. it looks so fragile, what if you want to put it away and take it out again.. I'm a person that's stressed out by "fragile" things so easily, and I can't relax until it's in a stable state (finished). Also very complicated to learn vs crochet
Cuz y’all not the same ppl
You sell ur crocheted stuff?? Wow that's pretty neat 👏
I knit and crochet and like both. I also think it depends on the project, stitch pattern, needle, hook size color and thickness of yarn.
I prefer crochet. Why use two needles when you can use one hook? It's also easier, once you get the basics.
I like the knit hat better. Thank you so much for starting these videos. I never thought I could knit but your videos have proved me wrong!
Thank you for your video. I’ve been knitting for a couple of years still consider myself a beginner. I’ve tried to crochet but just can’t seem to get the hang of it. Friends who do both say knitting is less stressful on their hands. I’d love to hear what your readers say. Thx again:)
I knit mainly, but easier to fix mistakes with crochet. I just enjoy knitting and the look of the fabric it creates.
Thank you. I am just trying to see what to learn to do first!
Hi I think knitting looks more professional, that's why I learned how to knit. I've been crocheting since I was very small. .. thanks for your videos. .
I pretty much agree with all you said. Love them both but for some things knitting looks more refined.
I've only just started, but I think knitting is easier. I bought some crochet hooks because I though it would be easier, but I'm struggling even more.
Omg same! Everybody told me crochet is easier, but it´s so hard for me
@@adrianahernandez8918 frr- like i’ve tried SO MANY TIMES but i just don’t get it-
I didn't knit for years because it was so much easier to crochet.
I love the way knitting looks, I don’t want to knit but I will buy it. I do like to crochet.
Both are easy but, for me, knitting feels more natural.
I crochet and loom knit but I think crocheting is easier then needle knitting
Thanx for this video showing the difference between a knitted fabric & crocheted fabric!
I prefer knitting if I want a nice drape. Crochet tends to be bulkier and a bit stiffer
I tried to learn knitting but I couldn't keep the yarn on the needles. I have been crocheting since I was very young.
Try bamboo needles
this is my first "how to video" on the subject and I have never even considered doing it until today.
Because i thought crochet not for clothes crochet for doily ,amigurumi ,bags
But when it comes to clothes and hat knitting is number one
I like knitting more but I'm also starting to learn crochet. As for as the cast on in knitting, you don't have to do the long tail cast on. you can do another one that doesn't require setting aside a bunch of yarn and hoping you have enough stitches. There's other cast ons
I have been crocheting for a little over a year and LOVE IT!!! I have officially decided that I want to learn how to knit. Crocheting was frustrating but a wonderful experience! I enjoy it immensely! I am so nervous about knitting! lol
I love the look of crocheted hats and scarves but as far as actual clothing is concerned, like socks or shirts, I believe knitting looks cleaner and more beautiful to me.
Im still trying to learn knit. It's just not as easy for me to get as crocheting was. I started crocheting about 5 years ago now i think.
Not sure if Charlotte said this but Knitting consumes less yarn than Crochet. I've proven that many times especially on making caps.
I like both. They have a unique looks.
To me it's knitting is far easier n prettier
I heard crochet takes more yarn. Let me know
I "learned" knitting first.
I prefer crochet why use 2 needles one can do, lol°° I tried it just cannot get into knitting. Maybe some day. Beautiful variations I must admit.
I much more prefer the fabric that knitting creates rather than crochet. I know how to do both. I rarely crochet anymore.
I just started crocheting. I do like the look of knitting better. I like the tighter stitches. I would love to learn to knit 🧶
I like the look of knit better. Crochet works faster and uses more yarn. Best to finish out in crochet edgi g
Of course you can see the difference. It’s an unfair comparison. I’m sad for those whose first introduction to crochet may be this video…
I like both. It depends on what the item is.
I also think when sweaters are knitted I think they fit better, maybe it’s just me but I think crochet uses more yarn, anyone think the same?
For sure, crochet uses WAY more yarn!!
@@SlickRicShow people have actually experimented on this and found that it depends on the stitch. Crochet often uses a bit more yarn, but there are some knit stiches that use more than regular crochet. There's never a huge margin though.
I prefer knit. I used to crochet, which I have been trying to get back into.
I like both knitting and crocheting, but crocheting seems a bit challenging-yet knitting is nice, but I like them both.
Thanks for this great explanation!!! I will be starting this in the fall!! But I think I will go with knitting because I love the look and I will take my classes at Jo Ann’s and there are a few older ladies in town who like to help the young women at the community center so I am in good shape!!
Hands down, I prefer the look of knit.
I like them both but i can only knit. They are both pretty cool!
In knitting IF you use a life line here and there. You can take your knitting back to that line..SAVING YOUR WORK.. I NEED to do this...so I don't take ALL MY Yarn off..I appreciate all tou teach 🙏🤟❣☃️
I knit and crochet, depending on the pattern, I like both.
I like the look of both. I like knitting. I Don’t know how to crochet but i can make a chain lol.
It's easy to learn. Find some simple videos and start with a single crochet and work your way up to double and triple. I started out crocheting scarves for everyone years ago. My family got quite of few of them the first few years. :D
I do both, but have a preference for knitted projects.
I know how to KNIT I do NOT know how to CROCHET I did try only I can't I can only do a few loops but I just can't, I will try again but for now I am going with knitting looks easy for me.😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
I love the look of knit so much better. But I only know how to crochet. I feel like at this point (I've been crocheting for over 15 years) that it would be hard for me to learn to knit. Thanks for this video.
I learned how to crochet when I was 18, I'm now 37 and only learned how to knit a few years ago... It comes down to how bad you want to learn and practice... ❤ "Anyone can Knit"
Knit look for sure! It's slower, but tue finished product is much nicer. This was helpful to me. I am just getting into knitting.
I like the look of both it depends on what look I am going for at the time I wear it. I do know how to do both but I am a better crocheter than knitter because of how long I have been crocheting and only taught myself how to knit 6 years ago.
I crochet because it’s easier vs knit. I do like the look of knit. I also do Tunisian.
I like the look of knit for something's. I find crochet easier and faster. I like both though.
hi, my name is miss bread, that's my nickname... and i've been knitting for 20 years... but i want to know that crocheting
is easier than knitting... so darn tired of knitting... so i quit knitting for good, started to crochet .. and i love crocheting
better than knitting... i practice my crocheting every day... and not knitting for good!! i hate knitting!!!
i believe that crocheting is better than knitting..... do you agree with me/???? please let me know when you read this.
thank u. keep up the crocheting !!! i believe and love my crocheting better than knitting!! knitting Sucks!!
bye for now.
☺️
I do both & I like both. They all have their beautiful & "ugly" sides (when your wrists are aching!). I use crochet to make cute toys & knitting for clothes.
Fixing mistakes in knitting got much easier for me in knitting by learning how to ladder down rather thank tink back
I liked the look of the crochet hat and the stitch face is really cute!
okay using that goofy crochet hat to compare the end result of crochet to the end result of knitting is kind of a hit job against crochet. crochet can make very beautiful and professional-looking hats too, even my very first crochet hat was ten times prettier than the crochet hat in the video and people complimented me on it.
I can knit and crochet. But I prefer crocheting. Why?
1) less equipment. I can use one hook while working on multiple projects.
2) When you’re knitting, your needles need to stay with your project - so if you want to start a new project you need to buy another set of needles
3) I don’t like how when you knit, the project edges curls
4) crocheting is faster
5) I can create different shapes and patterns while crocheting
Im here deciding which one to try.. I dont know both. But comment section makes it more confusing.
I both knit and crochet. Crochet is faster to do but I do prefer knitting.
Knit looks much nicer. Crochet looks sloppier and too bulky for my taste...
Very nice video but I love crochet more than knitting 💐🌸💐
I like and both knitting and crochet, it just depends on what projects that I like.
Not all crochet stitching techniques creates holes and gaps. This video does not give a fair game. Now if you look up cable style crochet, the look dominates both of what you’re showing us here.
