Then, when he's told about the popularity ratings from this speech, he starts realising he really doesn't need to. Maybe he needed to be likeable at the very beginning of his superhero career, but as long as he act like an unhinged a murderous psycho with no possible excuse and he stands for some kind of cause, enough people are going to cheer for him. The ending where he kills the guy who threw something at his son is just the culmination of this realisation.

      It's like he still thinks that he can do everything in his prime years (ie 24-32), but the uncomfortable truth is that he can't anymore, like seeing Ronaldo going for glory with those missed free kicks, then of course missing the penalty against Slovenia - when he easily could have let other players shine. That sort of behaviour screams excessive narcisism to me, much like Homelander. A leader is someone who puts the team first and leads by example. The fact that Ronaldo had to be consoled by his teammates as well when he missed the penalty, he shouldn't have been the one crying/sulking - he should have been the one rallying them on and creating chances instead of expecting others to give it to him.
      Ronaldo playing in the Saudi League has already proven that he isn't the player was in his heyday, otherwise he would have still been playing in Europe albeit for a less competitive league in somewhere like Turkey, Netherlands or even his home country - Portugal and I believe that a lot of fans would have preferred it if he returned back to his roots at Sporting.

    Homelander is a villain that is nearly impossible to not sympathize with. He is a victim of environment, one in which everything going back to his birth has been an arranged existence, with nearly daily torture as a child and having to live up to this impossible standard while having power as he has no idea how to control and seeing the most unimaginable things at an early age while not even having any parents at all. He doesn't really understand any right from wrong, because when you're that powerful you have no one else that can stand up to you and put you in your place. The one thing he so desperately craves is love and acceptance, the same as the rest of us, except he doesn't even realize that he's going about it in a bad way, or doesn't care because of a lifetime of trying while others completely reject him and hold his faults to an impossible and unreasonable level. Lying to him out of fear that if he doesnt like the truth, he will violently kill them always, which by season 3 he has finally started embracing. Now on top of all of this, he has been at rock bottom after having blackmail for the first time in his life, and the closest thing he's ever had to actual love and acceptance has been taken from him by their own delusions of overt superiority that was despised a century ago.
    The fact that he hasn't gone on unapologetic genocidal rampages and already turned New York City into a hellscape is nearly commendable.

He legitimately stands up to an evil corporation that uses, lies to, and manipulates the populous for profit and doesn't care who they hurt. Homelander is aware of the immorality of his actions, and he understands why he has become who he is. He despises the evil corporation that is responsible for taking his opportunity to have a happy childhood away from him, shaping his immorality and controlling him for years. This speech is a victim of abuse finally speaking out after years of being muzzled. However, Homelander has been so corrupted by all of this, that he has became just as evil as Vought itself. He thrives on ppl feeding his ego, hence this whole speech being simultaneously centered around playing the part of persecuted victim with superpowers and putting himself on the pedestal of being a hero the country supposedly needs.

    • @LightninLewis
      @LightninLewis ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Psychology doesn't function that way in various scenarios it is very apparent that Homelander has been extensively emotionally, and physically abused. That changes the development of a person's brain, and can cause many different problems. In the case of Homelander it caused a split personality, and PTSD.
      He was then demoralized by the events of the prequel episode in Diabolical S1,and was taught that his actions won't lead to consequences by Noir. If you consider Homelander's pov, he is a muzzled victim of abuse and Vought is much more evil than himself.
      Homelander doesn't know when he took his first breath, he didn't have a mother or a father who was present and he was born in what Vogelbaum described as a cold lab, surrounded by doctors who wanted to probe him.
      Take away his powers, and this guy has endured one of the saddest introductions to life in fiction...
