"I was just doing my job" is always the justification monsters turn to when theres nothing to hide behind.
Homelander is the perfect example of understanding but not justifying. I understand why Homelander is a monster and does what he does, but i don't justify his actions.
And no one cares about what you justify or doesn't. Your right, sort of not justifying his actions is in encounter with my act of dismissing you.
My exact thoughts on this scene.
Same with firecracker as well. It's well done for both characters. Understandable back stories but their actions in the present are abhorrent regardless

Homelander is the example of Monsters aren't born, they are created. If he had actually been raised in a proper environment he would have been the best hero the world had, but he wasn't. He was poked, tortured, and subjected to all kinds of horror that made him the monster he is now.
And for some reason they can't fathom at how fans like him more as a character then the entire cast.
He reminds me of the Michael Fassbender Magneto off X First Class. "I'm looking for my creator"😈
A lot of bad decisions has been made, surprise surprise! Treating a child horribly growing up made them a monster
Did you even watch the episode? Barbara (I think) literally says he was a monster from the get-go, lasering his way out of his mother's womb and slaying 2-3 doctors and nurses in the process.

The fact that this episode directly became iconic a few hours after its release just show the quality of it
for frank, the pain ended. for homelander, he felt EVERYTHING
The way Antony Starr's face twitches - sorrow for the tortured young Homelander, rage for the indifference of the scientist, aghast at the evil humanity is capable of - I think this is one of Homelander's most human moments. Tremendous acting.
The music that plays when Homelander seems like he's about too snap is perfect. Sounds straight out of a horror movie. Comes in quickly and cuts out fast, showing his temper flare up and then calm down
His insanity theme is amazing. It puts you on edge that he is about to do anything at that moment.
All of the Homelander scenes this episode are straight psychological horror. From the sound design to the filming and editing.

That's because he and Butcher are mirror images of each other. Little traumatized boys who grew up to be powerful, dangerous, violent, and rage-filled men.

@@demon_hawkeye5269nah its been utter dogshit since season 2.
Reminds me of a line from V for Vendetta. “What they did to me was monstrous. And in return they created a monster.” I’m paraphrasing but you get the idea.
Probably the only time Homelander was justified in his actions.
My heart breaks for the little boy that went through all this pain and suffering, but he’s a full grown man. Now he has no excuse for the way he acts but at the same time I don’t feel bad for the scientist.
What? Are u effing stoopid? What part of your actions have consequences to a child do u not get?
i think there is an excuse - he literally does not know better. he does not know how to love. he was a lab rat and then a tool and only now a dictator. like yeah he is a horrible person, but that is because he was never taught how to be one. honestly, fascinating villain.
a grown man is still a child if he was never taught how to be a man, he was taught to be a (fake) superhero with no other regard for healthy developments.
It’s also why there is such a huge disconnect between him and Ryan. Unlike John, Ryan has experienced being cared for and loved by others which is why he is able to view other humans as living beings and is distraught about their deaths. Meanwhile John can’t view them as anything more than fragile toys.
Also can we appreciate this sums up why men's mental health is so bad.
He is a fully grown man is not an okay argument... he needed psychological help... if he'd received it , even as a grown man, he would likely of been, if not 100%, ar least much better than he is.
"I forgive you."
What an excellent line. So true to character.
This is the perfect example of how you write an overpowered villain. Show that he had flaws to make him somewhat empathetic, and how he can single-handedly make people go their deaths without touching them

If it were possible to create superhumans like Homelander, you'd think that some of the scientists involved might just question the wisdom of running brutally cruel tests on them as children. You know, bearing in mind that they're _super-powered_ and will be adults one day, with memories of all the horrible things that were done to them growing up.
Yeah they did think about it. That is why barbara said they came up with a strategy of putting "psychological" controls on homelander, instead of the "physical" ones, which they cannot because he is too strong physically
@@Hibernicus1968 it worked out pretty well for 40+ years.. and ofc they thought about it's a bad idea but there was clear pressure from bought and scientists had no other choice but to find a way to make "the homelander" work
@@siddharthgupta9801 For some reason I have to post this a second time; it disappeared.
Any outcome resulting in such horrifyingly gruesome and agonizing deaths cannot be said to have worked out "pretty well" just because the very, very predictable determination to exact revenge took a long time to materialize. "Pretty well" is avoiding -- not delaying, but _avoiding_ -- such a horrific outcome.
Homelander says he isn't human but he is the most human of all the people on the show. He is the culmination of all human characteristics. Envy, vitriol, pride, love and lust. He is all things human.
Homelander : I hope you enjoyed the cake, because it was your last meal.

It’s crazy when you realize Father and Son was being tortured and experimented on at the same time. Homelander with Vought and Soldier Boy with the Russians. Poor Ryan has it cut out for him in the mental health department. Hopefully he’ll be able to finally break the cycle.

Frank: “I was just doing my job”
