Are These as Good as Pretty Excellent? Owin/Aowin Budget Watercolor Review

  • When I saw these for sale on Amazon I couldn't resist because I thought they looked a lot like my favorite student watercolor "Pretty Excellent" so watch me as I compare the two sets and see what you think!
You can find the O.WIN watercolors here in sets of 24 or 35 in yellow, blue, and pink tins: amzn.to/3qG0FtW At the time of purchasing and filming the 24 and 36 color sets were priced the same. Be sure to select the color and size you want. the 36 yellow tin set sold out after I bought mine but hopefully is back in stock now. *affiliate link used
    Owin watercolors: amzn.to/3qG0FtW
    Pretty Excellent Watercolors: amzn.to/3GHSlQc
    Pros:
Very transparent (except for the lavender and yellow ocher colors)
    Good color payout
    Great color selection
    Activated instantly
All colors in their own individual half pans that can be rearranged if desired *the half pas are wider than standard but do fit standard tins as the height is the same.
Tin has a large mixing space
    Comes with a waterbrush
Included swatch card and postcards to paint on
Lightfast info included (although not sure if accurate on purples)
    Cons:
The tin is larger than normal and the lid was a bit warped
White is a warm-toned translucent mixing white (as opposed to Pretty Exellent's cool and opaque white)
So what would I pick between the pretty excellent and the Owin? Well, the paint is identical except for the white. It comes down to your preferences in the tin. the smaller footprint of the pretty excellent set appeals to me more in practical use but having each color in it's own half pan is very appealing for making smaller travel sets. I think the Aowin set is a better value (if the price remains the same between the two sets) but you should really go for the layout that will meet your needs best. I also like the separate half pans as they are more durable so once the paint is used up I can refill them with tubes paints and use them in other palettes as needed. The bottom line is I like them both and I recommend them to anyone who wants a basic set of watercolors for a good price! You can click on the links below and compare for yourself:
    Owin watercolors: amzn.to/3qG0FtW
    Pretty Excellent Watercolors: amzn.to/3GHSlQc

Hi Lindsay, thank you for the review. Owin/Aowen is the company that makes the Pretty excellence/Mei Liang watercolor (based on the info available on Chinese websites). I’ve always wanted to try the pretty excellence set but decided not to buy it as I really want to be able to reuse the tin and half-pans. I like the size of the owin set. I plan to use the tin as a bigger mixing tray 😆

Thanks for the review. I have the Pretty Excellent set that I bought because of your recommendation. I am happy with the paint and don't really care that they are in a molded tray. I appreciate you taking the time to compare sets and give us your take on the pros and cons and differences. You're great!

  • @FaerieDust

I can confirm that the Pretty Excellent paints are a proper half pan - I transferred the little blocks to Jackson's half pans to give away (I wanted to keep the tin 😅), and many of the paint blocks were actually a hair too *big* to fit in the pans.
I have no need for more paints, but I really like the size of these Owin pans - they look kind of like "three quarter pans", so to speak, maybe a bit smaller (two thirds? Idek 😂). I might well end up buying the set just for the tin and pans and give the actual paints away again, next time I'm in a crazy watercolor phase 😅

Thank you for making this video! I'm always interested in new products especially watercolors. I have the professional line of the Paul rubans and I hate to use them as practice( which is basically all I do at the watercolorist level Im at) but it's all I have. I wanted to get the pretty excellent but really didn't like the plastic insert and here is the solution. So I'm definitely getting a set of these. If my tin is a bit warped Ill probably just put a big rubber band around it if I can't straighten it out. Thanks for taking the time for all of your reviews it's greatly appreciated. Have a great day!

Thank you for the tips on how to bend the palette so it will stay closed. Other than that I love the paints. I agree they are the same as the pretty excellent set which I’ve used a lot and really enjoy. I’ve gifted the pretty excellent to friends because I have enjoyed using them so much. I like that this set is upgraded with the individual pans though, it feels a little nicer. Thanks so much for the great review, you are always spot on!

Hi Lindsay, I appreciate all the extra bits you put in this review (i.e. unboxing, hints on how to fix a few issues you had, etc). They are pretty, but I have enough paints for now. I know I'm probably an odd duck but I don't like the Paul Reubens set I have. I actually prefer the Cotmans set of 12. Again, I'm probably an odd duck but I prefer the smaller sets. The others have too many colors and it's easy to mix them up when using them. My favorite Watercolor sets to date are the Cotman and the Viviva sets. I'm thinking of getting a dot card for some professional paints and see which ones I like best and just buy the tube when I run out of what I currently own.
Thanks again for another informative and fun Watercolor review!

Loads of niceties with this SET. I purchased the Phoenix watercolors awhile back from your review and totally believe you,,, there are only a few keys manufacturers and many major brand clients! I love the PE paint. Purchased on your recommendation. The molded pan does not bother me but, I have push them out and placed them in a standard half pan and it works. It does not come out. I did it with empty half pans sold in a tin palette. The empty PE tin can then be used for other things like sketching pencils, erasers. You then have two tin that can travel as well in less space. I don't know why O.win didn't do this to begin with. You're such fun to watch and learn from. I really appreciate you.

Thank you for the review, Lindsay. I was going to get these because, like you, I liked the yellow tin. After reading amazon reviews I decided to put it on hold. I am very satisfied with my Pretty Excellent paints, and since the yellow tin seems to be a bit less quality, I have decided to pass on these. I don't need the half pans and the size of the tin is a little large for my workspace.
On another note, I would like to see the videos of the roses and goldfish. 👍😃

Hi Lindsay! So I was not able to order these in the UK, which did bum me out. I like the larger palette space and the yellow color. BUT I was able to order the Pretty Excellent set for £16 on sale! I had hesitated at first because I'm not nuts about the one-piece pan, but at that price...I can work with that or replace it with halfpans.
I have a mix of W&N student tubes and half-pans but don't have some of the colors I want, and mixing is still a work in progress for me lol. It's either fabulous or mud. Also your recommendation as a favorite budget brand stuck with me too. The colors seem so bright and fresh. It also will be helpful for following along to your classes or tutorials where you used the same paints.
So while I couldn't get this one, I was able to get another from the same co that you enjoy and recommend, and I appreciate your review! Thanks!

I bought 100 half pans for $7 on Amazon recently and found my old set of Pretty Excellent paints and removed the paints and put them into half pans…overflowing the half pans. The Paul Rubens student tubes paints I had were exactly the same and I removed the plastic holder and put the pans in with small magnets (that I buy in sheets and cut/attached to each). I filled it full! Lol! Scrap the plastic in Pretty Excellent and use inexpensive pans!

I will have to say that I lovingly blame you for my budget watercolor collection. I now own 1 palette of Artsy Metallics (24 color set), 2 Pretty Excellent palettes (36 color set), 1 Pretty Excellent + Metallics (48 color set), 1 Owin palette (36 color set). I DO NOT regret anything, hahahaha. I loved the Pretty Excellent enough that I bought another as a travel journal set, hence the 2 sets. I don't mind the plastic tray. It's not ideal, but it does help cut down the size of the tin, making it ideal for my travel journal bag. I'm very sad that they no longer sell the Artsy metallics, though. I'm too cheap to want to pay for the Paul Reubens just for the brand name and packaging. Thank you for your recommendations!!!

There’s definitely QC/batch variation issues. Quite a few of my colors are slightly off from yours. Like, the corner 4 reds are all less vibrant, verditer blue is very pale, and sap green is more yellow. Stuff like that. Even my browns are slightly different - speaking of, I’m surprised at the low pigmentation of my earth pigment colors, hard to get a rich color. I’d have thought those would be cheap pigments but I guess not.
My cerulean is more rich, reminds me of the Cotman Intense Blue. This Intense conversely reminds me of my favorite Prussian blues. And what the heck is a Turkey blue anyways?!
I do love that lemon yellow, stronger than what I’m used to (for a yellow it’s decent). Cadmium orange hue is great. No bright red though, my reds are muddy almost. Love the green section and the ultramarine though. And the cerulean. Cobalt I assume it’s a hue cause I think that’s an expensive pigment. Overall, I’m not sure what pigments are in here but hopefully their 2 star means at least a month or two at full sun! Lol.

The 36 pretty excellent set honestly even tho they are not in removable pans. It if you wasn't removable pans any of the sets that superior makes (artify, artsy or art whale) are pretty good. Actually the doodlehog 36 set is superior paint and was $10 last I checked!

I purchased this set after hearing that this company owned Paul Rubens (I thought I did anyway). My tin is very nicely made and no hanky lid. I like this set and use it as my travel palette. One thing I may have missed and would like to know is the pigment information for each color. I couldn’t find it on the website, do you hav any information? I really appreciate your videos❤️

Hi Lindsay! I just had the Owin set delivered today and the tin is definitely wonky. I’m going to try to bend it around some to see if it helps. I got the blue one so it just wasn’t the yellow. Did you ever get yours bent to shape?

Not really as all the Paul rubens colors have their own personality. They are more "meaty" is the best way I can describe it but colors like quinacridones and pthalo are similar.

Lindsey, please, how do the Paul Ruben watercolors compare with these Pretty Excellent watercolors? Do I understand correctly that the Ruben palette that is pink is the professional-grade and the blue box is the student grade? Thank you so much!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They are all lovely but with the Paul rubens in the pink tin you will find that each color has its own personality (some granulate, some done, some are more transparent etc) which I love but might be frustrating for a beginner. The pretty excellent (also made by Paul rubens) are more uniform. Very bright and transparent and my be pumped up a bit with dies yet surprisingly lightfast (see Kimberly crick's lightfast test) so they are good too. The student grade pans un the blue tin are a puzzle. They ate nice but my least favorite of the 3 but swatch out identical to the Sonnet paint by the makers of white nights. They even have the same color numbers. It's uncanny. There are more fugative colors in that set so if pick one of the other 2.

I’m binging your student grade comparisons. I think the reason they don’t pinch the pan track is because some paints come wrapped and would be hard to get out. Your palette isn’t ready to go until you have unwrapped, if necessary, rearranged if necessary, added or deleted if necessary… not coming pre-pinched allows for and invites that customization.

that lid looks wonky. Would be annoying for my adhd tic. I would fiddle with that lol. I Like the colors tho. Reminds me of the white nights, tho if memory serves me right white nights is somewhat brighter, but then again its an artist paint. Impressive transparency tho
