- People often forget about Duck Hunt in Smash Ultimate's competitive scene. Whether it be for his far and few results, lack of player representation, or just the sheer amount of high and top tiers you could be selecting instead. But, that hasn't stopped players like Sekkai Doggo from taking one of Ultimate's quirkiest characters and running away with a first place finish at a SWT Platinum Event. Today, we analyze Duck Hunt and Sekkai Doggo's Top 8 bracket in order to answer the question: Are they good or just... weird?

What I notice about Sekai Doggo is that he always gets absolutely steamrolled first game and then adapts and completely dominates from therein.
Love this breakdown for a more rare character. Hope this can continue going forward with Smash Ultimate
as a duck hunt main these were some amazing sets to watch, it's great to get these little guys in the spotlight every couple years

Idk how good Duck Hunt is relative to others in the ultimate cast, but Can is easily one of the best moves in the entire game. It literally does it all

@@StrawHatAura it's amazing for zoning, and applying pressure. If they try to hit it back at you, just press B lol. Look at the game with Bigduckhuntfan(BDHF) vs. Sparg0, Duck Hunt is barely used that Sparg0 didn't know what to do against Can. Resulting in Sparg0 getting 2 stocked twice and losing to BDHF
@@Jackington208 Sparg0 became a bit of a choke artist. Much like Cosmos, but I'm starting to think that's just a pattern with people playing broken swordies. Duck Hunt can very easily have Can exploited, that's why it's not regarded as a great overall move because it can fuck you over in multiple ways. This notion that hard characters must be good is dumb. A character can be difficult and still not that rewarding, as is the case with most bottom tiers. Duck Hunt is ass, and the proof's in the pudding. Maybe I'm uninformed, but I've never heard anything about a Duck Hunt winning evo or anything

Duck Hunt was always a character that I wanted to see buffs for (he arguably needed them pretty badly due to power creep elsewhere in the roster), but sadly it never got anything meaningful ☹️
His dair makes me sad. It's so much work and risk just to go for it and then it hits like a wet noodle.
@@nathanlevesque7812 Yeah… the second hitbox is actually good, but it never quite seems to connect from the first.
imo Duck Hunt preys on people respecting their zoning too much. Rushing them down is always the answer even if you play a zoner yourself. In pretty much every matchup DH has the worse hitboxes and mobility and they're going to be in tough if you know their setups even half as well as they so.
extremely true. i don't see many people talk about this but something as simple as falco lazer can shut down duck hunt's zone easily. i used to think he had potential to be really good but he really lacks consistent early kill power. you always need to have the can in a favourable position or else your neutral is already lost. sometimes i look at a character like pac-man and just wonder what duck hunt can do better than him.
Duck Hunt has a super good mobility wym. He also has one of the best frame 6 grabs in terms of range and utility, a super disjointed up air, and an absurd conditioner like the can.
@@sekaidoggo7610 What I mean is that DH has a bottom 20 initial dash, a bad SH FF time, and a middling air acceleration and these are imo the three most important movement stats.
As for bad hitboxes the problem with a lot of DH's kit is the the duck has a hurt box. Moves like ftilt, dtilt, fair, and bair get outspaced because of this. Duck Hunt's head sticking out past his nair, up smash oos not extending all the way to the ground, and DH's smash attacks in general being a bit inconsistent/subject to SDI also contribute to my opinion.

Played my first and only ever Ultimate tournament before Covid and fought a SoCal dunk hunt monster. I mean apparently they were a monster because after I won with mii swordfighter the other players at the tournament were mad because the duck hunt would weed out a lot of their competition. I was definitely not better than them, mii swordfighter's tornado just destroys all of duck hunt's projectiles on contact.

i think it says a lot that raito's performances have dropped. sephiroth and aegis feel like the two matchups that really gatekeep the character, steve too

Throughout this entire video, I just love how Sekai Doggo would get demolished in the first round, but then adapt quickly and win the set.

PGStats gives us a lot of freedom with the scripts to have fun on stuff like this. The script just had those lines in parentheses so I decided to turn my back to my mic and yell those lines to sound like I was in another room 😂

I love duck hunt. He’s one of my side characters and nobody expects him.
Duck Hunt is the sauciest zoner in Smash history.
I think he's also one of the fairest. He has get-off-me tools, sure, but he still really struggles up close and can stuggle to make a reversal when trapped. He get punished for not keeping his foe away, which is what we don't see on many other zoners

At least 1/4th of the stocks I get are from people being too focused on the projectiles during rushdown

you can beat minecart with can, it just takes an extra ping (hit steve in the minecart not the minecart himself), I am very sure as of right now duck hunt beats steve

That diagram at 12:11 is fascinating. I love it just because it shows how small the slice of smash ultimate that I know well is, and consequently how large the broader commun is. yes I expected palu wolf and peach to be high, and The placements of fox and lucina make sense as well. But I did not at all expect inkling, pichu or megaman to be as high as they are. It just shows how many ultimate events there are around the country and around the world that I don’t follow, or even know the existence of, and it shows how much top Top NA players or simply just names I know like ESAM, stick in my mind that I expect their characters to be higher in usage than they are. It’s also a reminder of just how few people play less popular characters that I make a point to follow, like basemage, jejajeja, and Skyjay.

As a duck hunt main , you can actually rush down Steve . The only matchup he straight up loses hard is snake . If you can run while moving can Steve gets rushed down hard fully charged long f smash destroys him through blocks while can prevents jump

I cant speak to steve. But duck hunt absolutely doesnt hard lose to snake, id argue even but if you wanted to say slight disadvantage for DH then i could understand that. There are plenty of match ups duck hunt struggles more with than snake, being min min, zelda, joker, and mega man. There might be more but those are the ones yhat immediately jump to mind

The character is carried by Can. Not saying that any Duck Hunt players are carried by that move, in fact this character is carried by the players and not the other way around. It's just that Can saves Duck Hunt from being bottom tier. Really bad normals, lackluster aerials, and probably the worst set of smash attacks in the game. Also without Can covering Duck Hunt's recovery, gimping them would be free.
Hats off to people who make this character work, especially at top level.
Hot take: dog hunt has the best projectors and best projectile based character.

Basically, yeah. Because its the only platinum event in SA, the only other players who have a shot at the spot are meetleo and ferps (2ns and 3rd), and only if they get like top 2 in both the gold events here in SA, and if sekai doggo doesnt do super well in neither of those.

As a duck hunt,terry,and mega man main i fan say that duck hunt mainly relies on gimmicks more then anything it’s more just making stuff up on the spot when fighting against a duck hubt

Other characters who camp and go in do a better job. I also don't think he's as fun as Steve and Steve is strictly better in a lot of ways.
Steve is also a pretty common character in tournaments and having a bad matchup against him is pretty bad.

Clay is frame 17- How is it frame 1?
The clay pigeon spawns frame one, he doesnt fully throw it and is able to move out of the animation till frame 17 or something like that. For example, if you grab me on the same frame i start side b, the clay pigeon still flys toward you which can knock you out of your grab animation. Its more useful on the ground as a combo or grab breaking tool than in the air but thats where can comes into play as a panic option instead

If one has a good bracket sure but down B is unreliable, fast characters just run by it like it doesnt exist and also are a hard matchup for isabelle

Duckhunt is like wash down Pac-Man. He has some of the interesting combo setups like Pac-Man…yet doesn’t have the most useful moves like Pac-Man beside the can really and arguably the forward tilt.
He’s a mid tier, that’s all
Duck Hunt sucks. And I'm an Elite Duck Hunt main. But, I think he's one of the very few characters that people don't know how to play against (like Olimar, Ice Climber and Rosalina & Luma). I honestly can't believe how this guy won a whole championship with him.
