I also LOVE my Greenstalks. I have the spinner base but found it works better for me to place plants that need lower light on the north side and then I don't need to spin. very good idea, if you have a small garden. Like building skyscrapers. I'm going to do this with my 10 buckets strawberries, see how that works And for the first time i had me some California redtree "sequoia" seeds, about 25, and got 3 to germinate. No easy thing.

I’ll probably do this with my new “original” tower. I got a “leaf” tower last year and half filled it with strawberries. Now the runners it’s all strawberry, except for one catnip plant. As much as I want to put them next to each other, I’ll need to put the “original” in the main garden as peppers need as much sun as I can do.

I worry about these with wind in my Midwest location. We get 60mph gusts with storms every couple weeks and the only sheltered locations on my tiny property lose 4-5 hours of afternoon sun. :/ Maybe I can pound in some t-posts and strap them on with some baling wire

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I actually pounded in some 8 foot T-posts since this post, and attached some welded wire fencing for tomatoes, which is where I got the idea. Just thinking on how to apply it to these planters. If there's a hole for a center post maybe using a chainlink fence pole or something could do the trick.

I LOVE THE VERTICAL PLANTERS THEY ARE GREAT FOR SMALL AREAS AND EASY FOR WATERING IF YOU HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES LIKE MYSELF. IT’S SO MUCH EASIER TO JUST WATER ONE TOWER INSTEAD OF STANDING A KING PERIOD TO WATER ROWS AND ROWS OF PLANTS. I LOVE WATCHING YOUR CHANNEL, I HAVE IMPLEMENTED SO MUCH THAT YOU HAVE TAUGHT US! THANK YOU SO MUCH GARY 😊 I JUST WANTED TO ASK YOU, DO YOU GET A GOOD SIZED BROCCOLI HEAD FROM YOUR VERTICAL PLANTER?
So glad to help and I agree about the towers. So I think you would but its more on how hot your area gets. The warmth comes here fast and often broccoli flowers. Hi Gary. Last year I grew 27 pepper plants in the Mostly Perpendicular Tower of Peppers. I got a late start, but still ended up with a great harvest-multiple harvests. This year, I have 57 pepper plants growing in the Twin Towers of Peppers (fraternal, not identical). The plants were already flowering and producing peppers in April. I must have done something terribly wrong for this to have happened. I have the same problem with my tomato plants, flowering and having fruit on the vine in April. It isn't from stress. All the plants are super healthy. Is it too early for ground cherries to be fruiting, and squash to be blossoming? Yeah, them too. What have I done? LOL (Alabama 7B, frost dates April 10th, Oct 31) I was able to get the plants in the ground on April 6th-9th.
Hey….EXCELLENT! I am of the opinion that you are on the right track…..get them started early. You are a trend-setter. 👍🏻 The southern heat and sun, ugh, might knock them out too early in the summer. Are you sure you’re still a 7b zone? I’m in central NC where are 7b has “magically” turned into a zone 8. I would really like to try ground cherries for the first time. I have not planted the seeds yet as our soil has been too cool. Hot day temps, but cool soil. I would appreciate any hints you may have on getting these to germinate. Did you start them indoors?
@@joannc147 The peppers love the heat, but it does get a little too warm for tomatoes. I have a solution for that-shade cloth. I start my seeds inside on a temperature regulated heat mat starting in January, and take them outside as soon as I can after sprouting to get the seedlings used to the weather and sunlight UV. I bring them in when temps drop below 38F. The change in climate zones is all political crap for the climate change agenda. I can point to dates and temps that clearly fall in the 7B climate zone that were left out of new zone change. Some winters are colder, some warmer, but nothing has changed in the fourteen years I have lived here, or the forty-four years my mother has lived here. Winter temps get down into the single digits about every three years in Sylacauga AL, clearly climate zone 7B. Do not make the mistake of planting plants, ie citrus trees, for the new zone change. Plant by frost date, and the previous climate zone before the change.
@@joannc147I like the "magically" 😂😂 mine went from 8b to 9a and I call bs. They just did that to push their agenda. Our spring started a little bit earlier but it's been cold longer than last year here in western WA.
Other things give them signals. But they should still take off. They still want to grow. If your root systems weren't overly constrained. I think you are good. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN The plants are starting their fourth month, so they are probably on time. I got an early start, and potted up three times before planting them in the ground. Thery are in fertile soil, have healthy root systems-burried deep, and theier color is ideal. The tomato plants are between kne high and waist high, and growing. Today the squash flowered. The semideterminantr tomatoes are starting to flower too. The peppers are a foot tall, some taller, and growing. All look healthy. The way the garden is growing, I may have to take a second harvest of mustard in the next few days, maybe some chard too. Everything but my radishes and beets are about three weeks ahead of schedule. I saw blossoms on my cantaloupe this morning, and my North Star cherry tree is budding out with new growth, and a second round of flowers. The lapins and Stella cherry sticks look like small trees now, with branches sprouting, and leaves all the way down the trunk. The Fuji apple tree has about two feet of new growth. About 95 percent of my garden is growing amazingly well. As for the other five percent, I have plans to move the raised beds to a new location that will give them better morning sun, and afternoon shade. That will take care of the problem.

Very good. Depending on how many you put in a tier and how well you water and feed, id say to be fair 90% of size and production. This is assuming you fill the other pockets with other plants. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN I watched it again and I didn’t hear what type of peppers you were planting. One of my boxes is maybe 3‘ x 3 ‘ I want to know how many plants I can put in there almost all of my pepper seeds germinated
I like to put worm castings in my raised beds and in all containers as well as a little compost just for adding some limited biology to soil in containers, I will then use a organic fertilizer my preferred organic fertilizers I blend myself or buy from Down to Earth brand or Trifecta from Mi Gardener. I will use a liquid soil biology and water it into all containers to add a bunch of soil bacteria and microbes to digest the fertilizer and form mycorrhizae in the soil In really small pots I use synthetic fertilizer cause they dont make sense to use organic on they cant maintain soil life necessary to use it. One of my raised beds is probably the richest ever, pegged a soil test out at maximum on everything tested and has earth worms in it and is rich and black and everything I plant in it shoots up and makes big huge crops, lettuce out of that bed puts store bought to shame. I had to stop fertilizing it because its so alive and rich that i dont need it anymore for quite some time. everything in that has grown mycorrhizae on it

The cool crops on the north side work well. Good plan. Excellent use of your towers.

very good idea, if you have a small garden. Like building skyscrapers. I'm going to do this with my 10 buckets strawberries, see how that works
And for the first time i had me some California redtree "sequoia" seeds, about 25, and got 3 to germinate. No easy thing.
That should work. Growing up really is effective

Wow! I have my strawberries growing in one of mine but wouldn’t have thought to plant peppers in it.
Maryland zone 7. Strawberries are good to 0 degrees but you can disassemble these and put them somewhere safer. But that is extra work. if you have strawberries that survive in the ground, they should in towers.

The pepper do well.

I worry about these with wind in my Midwest location. We get 60mph gusts with storms every couple weeks and the only sheltered locations on my tiny property lose 4-5 hours of afternoon sun. :/
Maybe I can pound in some t-posts and strap them on with some baling wire

But I am trying some on the north side of the tower.

The strawberries do you kinda refresh too & add compost/peat? Maybe lifting up the plant not to bury the crown. Do you add a mulch to them?
If full I just add some sprinkled organic around the crowns and use water soluble for feedings. You can mulch around them. You dont have to do much of a full soil refresh. Just keep them fed.

When you cant go out, go up. 🍻
Cheers to that

How arw the yields of 1 plant in the greenstalk compared to potted plants?
Very good. Depending on how many you put in a tier and how well you water and feed, id say to be fair 90% of size and production. This is assuming you fill the other pockets with other plants. Plant the peppers that stay around 3 feet and not maybe a Poblano that gets to 4+ feet but it would still grow in there.

I had to stop fertilizing it because its so alive and rich that i dont need it anymore for quite some time. everything in that has grown mycorrhizae on it
Very nice!
