I bought two Greenstalks this past year, and even though I got them setup late in the season, they still performed very very well for me. Basil, Lemon Balm, Green Beans, Cayenne Peppers, Carolina Reapers, Roma Tomatoes, and Oregano were all top performers stuffed into my two Greenstalks. I am strongly considering getting a third one next year due to the tremendous production I experienced this season. I can only imagine how great it will be when I get things going in May versus July 👊🏻🌻👊🏻

Once again, a thorough demonstration of the greenstalk and how it works. Thank you. You are the only one I watch that uses their greenstalk effectively. Other channels that I watch rarely have anything growing in it. Thank you. My greenstalk is always in use. In the winter its pansies. All other times, its food or herbs. I bought another one this year for just flowers. I love my greenstalk.
I love th measuring cup, bowl and spoon :). But for real, this is helpful. I just ordered my greenstalk and I am binge watching any advice on starting her out. I can't wait!!!!
In this video I show you the soil mix I enjoy using, however, you can use any bagged mix which is labeled for container gardening or potting mix. I have excellent results using the mix shown in the video. Each tier holds approximately 1 cubic foot of soil, which is almost 7 1/2 gallons. If you are planting starts with a large root ball (large seed potatoes, peppers/squash/tomatoes in 3 to 4 inch pots), the measurement in the video should work fine for you. HOWEVER, if you are planting seeds, I recommend using 8 gallons which is slightly over 1 cubic foot of soil. If you use the mix I show, please add approximately 2 2/3 cups MORE of each component (compost, vermiculite, peat moss) of the blend I show in the video. So 1/2 the 5 gallon bucket of each component PLUS 2 2/3 cups of each for each tier if you are planting seeds.
I really enjoy using coir! I use it for my seed starting mix but it is cost prohibitive for me to use it in my garden beds. Seed starting mix video: th-cam.com/video/QK7Z-EbzFOc/w-d-xo.html Also, you may enjoy this article: theecologist.org/2013/jan/25/truth-about-peat-moss

It’s easier to mix the soil in a large tarp, you just put all parts in (vermiculite, compost, and peat moss), and lift each corner so that it mixes the soil evenly, just lift each corner a couple times, this will ensures good mix.

Thank your for your videos subscribed to your channel to learn more. I want to get a few of these for my garden. Really thorough good tips. Do you leave the soil in when you don't have plants in them
I am great full for this video! I bought my first ones this year so I'm a newbie. So you change your soil every year? I've seen where some just refresh with compost for a few years.
Excellent explanation of using the greenstalk. Quick question, do you reuse the old soil? Do you just add new mix to it? Last year was my first time gardening and DH made me a raised bed. I used bulk regular soil with bulk compost, should I refresh the soil? I can't pull out all the soil but I don't think it was a good mix. Not a bad first year but certainly not the best. Lol.
I like to refresh the soil every year. I particularly like using the vermiculite in it. I'm not sure if you saw my video on it but it is a wonderful soil additive. th-cam.com/video/EGYg7Ia80MM/w-d-xo.html
Where do you get your seed potatoes from? I usually buy from Walmart but they end up being tiny. I've saved a few russets one time from my fridge to chit. When growing them one rotted. I got a few good ones but not enough. Do you have a shop you prefer? Burpee is so expensive.
I refresh the existing soil once a year because it gets compacted. Here is how I do it: th-cam.com/video/eddCrGb-qLo/w-d-xo.html If I just want to replant one pocket, here's how I do it: th-cam.com/video/c4MDJD1H_9U/w-d-xo.html
I grew my first garden in Greenstalks last year and I loved them and bought more. I’m getting ready to plant this year’s first seeds and I was wondering if you sanitize all the tiers every year when you refresh the soil? Also to sanitize would it be ok to just spray it with a 9-1 water-bleach solution and letting air dry? I had blight in one tier so I want to sanitize that one. Do I need to wait to plant after sanitizing? Thank you so much for all the info on greenstalks!! This is where I get all my info about them!
Wonderful! I hope you have signed up for the newsletter through my link too! I think that is a great idea to sanitize your tiers, especially if you've ever experienced a problem. I typically empty them and leave them empty in the sunlight for several hours and the UV light will do the trick too. I do this with all my containers. Of course, washing it with a solution sounds great too!
It's 1/3 of the mix, 2 1/2 gallons each per tier if you are planting something with a large root ball. If you are planting seeds, add about 8 gallons of mix total. So about 2 1/2 gallons each plus around 2 cups or so of each component. .
I purchase coarse vermiculite. There are 3 grades, fine, medium, and coarse. It's in short supply right now but I would try checking your local nurseries and " feed and seed" stores. Amazon was out the last time I checked.
No worries! I've been growing fennel for 13 years and have never noticed problems. The only time I am concerned about "companion" planting is when there is a Black Walnut tree nearby as it will kill everything. I have experimented with companion planting and found most planting warnings to be myths. It was very freeing to not be concerned with it. Happy Gardening!
First year using Mel's mix and had a question for you. I have access to a supply of medium grade vermiculite for almost free and was wondering if it could be used in place of the coarse grade? Thanks for your informative videos.
Hi! I am having a very difficult time finding vermiculite this year due to shortages. Any other time, I would say to only buy coarse or super coarse. However, in these uncertain times, I would recommend buying whatever grade of vermiculite you can find. Happy Gardening!
@@RainbowGardens I just order 12 cubic feet of the medium as I have a raised bed to fill as well and by the time the coarse becomes available in bulk I hope to already be planted. If I have any big issues with it I will let you know.
Yes, often times I just add it to a 3 gallon watering can, however, watering each pocket individually ensures each pocket receives the correct amount of fertilizer. When I use more water than needed with a 3 gal water can (to force the water down through the drip system), I have to use more fertilizer and some is wasted when it drains out the tubing.
Yes, 1 part of each. This will yield 7 1/2 gallons of mix per tier. However, the tier actually holds 8 gallons total. Once you begin watering the mix, it will settle and you can add more mix if needed, (about 1/2 gallon). If I am planting something with a large root ball (like a flower from a 4 inch pot), I will not have room to add more soil. However, if I am planting from seeds, I will most likely need to add a little more soil when I plant my seeds. Make sure to fill the tier to the brim with soil.
There are 5 planting tiers in the one's I use. There is a watering reservoir at the very top where you pour water into the system and you do not plant in it.
Hello! im curious about rain! What do you do with the GreenStalk when there's rain? I just set mine up three days ago and its going to rain here soon--shall I put the GreenStalk under cover or bring inside? what do you do? thanks!!

I’ll order the vermiculite through your link and maybe compost. I have peat moss bale and also a compost pile but I don’t think it’s ready for prime time yet. Thank you!!! gino
I don't have the measurement for the Leaf, I just got one too! Love it! I made a lot of mix in a wading pool. filled up the Leaf, and used the extra mix in a container where I planted oregano which is a perennial in my zone (6b).
Great video as usual. You explain everything so well. Do you think celery would work in the Green Stalk? If so, how many would you put per pocket? Thank you in advance.
@@nancynahnigoh3550 I had trouble growing celery here in Idaho (Meridian). It ended up going to seed. I watched someone doing it hydroponically but that will be an experiment for another day. Hope you have a good growing season!

Could you feed them from the top when watering?
Yes, often times I just add it to a 3 gallon watering can, however, watering each pocket individually ensures each pocket receives the correct amount of fertilizer. When I use more water than needed with a 3 gal water can (to force the water down through the drip system), I have to use more fertilizer and some is wasted when it drains out the tubing.
Very nice video :)
you didn’t show when you poured the compost. Is it a 1 : 1 : 1 ratio? So you did 2.5 gallons of each?
Yes, 1 part of each. This will yield 7 1/2 gallons of mix per tier. However, the tier actually holds 8 gallons total. Once you begin watering the mix, it will settle and you can add more mix if needed, (about 1/2 gallon). If I am planting something with a large root ball (like a flower from a 4 inch pot), I will not have room to add more soil. However, if I am planting from seeds, I will most likely need to add a little more soil when I plant my seeds. Make sure to fill the tier to the brim with soil.
@@RainbowGardens okay thank you. I keep reading all of these different articles. Gardening is tricky lol
can you plant things in the top section?
There are 5 planting tiers in the one's I use. There is a watering reservoir at the very top where you pour water into the system and you do not plant in it.
Hello! im curious about rain! What do you do with the GreenStalk when there's rain? I just set mine up three days ago and its going to rain here soon--shall I put the GreenStalk under cover or bring inside? what do you do? thanks!!
No worries! As long as you have a well draining soil mix, you will be fine. The best water for plants is rain.
Hi, thank you for the mix recipe. I just ordered the new Leaf 7 tier which is smaller than original. Do you have recipe for mix amount per tier? I’ll order the vermiculite through your link and maybe compost. I have peat moss bale and also a compost pile but I don’t think it’s ready for prime time yet. Thank you!!! gino
I don't have the measurement for the Leaf, I just got one too! Love it! I made a lot of mix in a wading pool. filled up the Leaf, and used the extra mix in a container where I planted oregano which is a perennial in my zone (6b).
@@RainbowGardens Thank you!!!!!!
Great video as usual. You explain everything so well. Do you think celery would work in the Green Stalk? If so, how many would you put per pocket? Thank you in advance.
You can grow anything in it , I answer for you cos I seen in one Video , she grow anything it it
@@nancynahnigoh3550 I had trouble growing celery here in Idaho (Meridian). It ended up going to seed. I watched someone doing it hydroponically but that will be an experiment for another day. Hope you have a good growing season!
@@barbaradumler6503 I live at the hot climate year round , hello from Malaysia , try again growing don’t give up till you see a very good result , make some survey , I am good at growing chilly but I didn’t eat cos spicy just to see this beauty if someone want it I just give
@@nancynahnigoh3550 We have a short growing season. Our last frost is May 10th. We actually had snow today but it melted and the sun is out. I usually plant early and then cover everything. They make non hot versions of chilies that you may like.
@@barbaradumler6503 wow it is wonderful to have snow even it is very cold though, I watch one video she grow her parsley on the balcony , cos balcony is warm and you can add ultra light suitable for plants , you must search more video to successfully grow your parsley or coriander, I like chilly but cannot stand the spiciness taste , if I wanted to really addicted to it just take one small chilly add soy sauce and dip my dishes , it is so yummy , nice to chat with you have a nice growing veggies in container or on the ground , thank you
Nice ❤
I know this is off topic but what color deck correct did you use? We’re going to paint our back deck and fri t porch this year and I really like the color you chose
Thank you! I'm out and about right now but I'll see if I still have the info when I get home. I really like the color too.
@@RainbowGardens thanks so much!
The color I used is called New Cedar.
Hi Donna. I am finally planting. Strawberries. Does the soil need to touch the watering disks on each layer or should there be a void under them?
Fill all the way. The soil will settle after a few waterings and into the summer.
@@RainbowGardens Thank you. I filled them with soil and then planted the strawberry roots and watered them in, but it left a big dip. I will add more soil.
Vermiculite is on back order until 4/29/22 from your recommended brand in the video so what alternative do I have? I'm planning on Lettuce from seed and strawberries from starts. Thanks. Love the great directions provided in the video and I'd like to have the same success.
Oh no!
It takes a hundred years for a peat moss bog to grow back to original state.
Please make sure you do thorough research on this subject before discounting the best soil additive the home gardener can use: theecologist.org/2013/jan/25/truth-about-peat-moss
You forgot to link the vermiculite 🙂
where are you from?
My videos are recorded in Western North Carolina
Do you think it is necessary to add mulch for this system?
I do not use mulch.
