Me too, three years, maybe longer, here in Oregon 8b. He's the best and my favorite here on yt. He teaches in a way that is understandable and adaptable to any zone.
I plant each tomato seed into a transparent plastic drinking cup, half full with soil. (I cut a hole in the bottom.) Then - instead of transplanting seedlings, I just add soil on the top and they develop much more roots.
That works too. Please visit my new blog www.therustedgardenblog.com Join this channel ($3.99 a month) to get access to Live Chat Garden Mentoring Q&A Perks: th-cam.com/channels/ptL6_qMImyW_yZwiMjQdpg.htmljoin
Your tomatoes look amazing! I started mine December 7th and they’re so leggy. I started in a 1in tray cell and they were just not having it. I transplanted to 6 inch pots on the 28th to try and see if that would help but they’re riding the struggle bus still. I’m only a 2nd year grower and still learning. Thanks for posting. Great to know. Thanks for doing the work! I typically start my Toms in March in New England and keep them for about 10 weeks indoors depending on what May looks like. This means I should be able to basically wait 2 weeks to a month. I typically grow a bunch in one big pot and then separate them on a nice day outside and put them up.
You can wait for sure. But you also have a method that works. I think younger plants will separate easier and have less root damage at planting. Good luck. Thank you for all of the work you do-growing prop plants,etc.-to educate and spread your gardening expertise. Your videos are very helpful! I am looking forward to your 2025 videos.
I had a hard time with this awhile back. I hat I had to start doing was after a few weeks of seedlings growing is I up pot them to larger pots and I am able to basically treat them like a leggy seedling then in about 6 weeks they are ready to go out. After 7 weeks they start to get root bound. Best way for me so far! Thanks for all of your tutorials over the last few years! Really helped get me going again! Happy new year! 🎉

I just bought your book and love it! I would love ideas for combating aphids (water hose doesn't cut it) and blight. I can grow gorgeous tomato plants from seed but these two issues hit me hard early every year. Thanks so much!

I made a bucket of soapy water and dunked the tomato plants (above ground part only, not roots) into the water for a few secs, left them to dry in the bathtub... aphids gone! I wanted to try it because it's hard to get all the leaves with spraying and this seemed easier. It is! Just one bucket of soapy water for all plants, hold them upside down, dunk, let dry.

Just discovered your channel on TH-cam and have been binge watching your videos. I’m in zone 7b and have been gardening for over 30 years..a lot of ur information has been very applicable. In one of your videos you had mentioned that you were growing a GMO Purple tomato developed by Norfolk Plant Sciences. I’m curious to see what your thoughts are on productivity, disease resistance, and taste when compared to your conventional heirloom/hybrid varieties. Would you grow it again? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! The GMO was cool looking cut through. It was very productive, not an overly sweet cherry. There are better tasting ones out there. The benefit is really the anthocyanin if you feel it adds to health. It dealt with my garden issues as good or a bit better than other tomato plants. If I have some seeds lying around I will but it's not a must grow for me. I just bought seeds & plant cells, flats from you yesterday. I bought the 2.5 x 2.5 cells. Which I think was all I saw. Are these the small, med or large cells you recommended here? Following you channel. Can't wait for the next vid of seed starting mix used, watering practice, & fertiliser used. Are there any seeds that need to be soaked overnight or scuff up on sand paper? How long do you leave plants under the grow lights?
Thanks for the shop support. Not sure off the top of my head but 2.5 inches seems like the large. Not really on the soaking and scuffing. Thanks. I noticed last year the root systems on a lot of my transplants was not as established using the coco coir and fertilizing myself versus using the miracle gro potting mix I've used in the past. Do you think they just needed more fertilizer?
I would give them more fertilizer but I like peat based starting mix better. Please visit my new blog www.therustedgardenblog.com Join this channel ($3.99 a month) to get access to Live Chat Garden Mentoring Q&A Perks: th-cam.com/channels/ptL6_qMImyW_yZwiMjQdpg.htmljoin
Question: Those large cells are they about the size of a 9 oz plastic cup or closer to a red solo cup? Hard to see in the film. What are your thoughts of seeding in your medium cell and after germination moving to larger cup? Am I just doing more work? Do we start two seeds in one large cell? Sorry about the questions I just really like your results!!
If you dont have the room, you need start small. But if you pot up and keep them under the lights anyway, you're just doing extra work. The arge 6 cells are smaller then 9 ounce cups. Probably holds 3 or 4 times the soil as the small cells per pocket. I start 2 or 3 seeds per cell and thin to 1 plant. Good luck. I'll be officially starting tomatoes in March.
Yes! I started my garden indoors last season. Ready to get 2025 started and share what I learned. I really appreciate all the information provided on TH-cam by other channels and yourself. Here’s to a successful gardening season in 2025! 😊💯🔥

What is your opinion on using the red solo cups ho up pot a seedling from one of the six cell containers?i have seen various gardeners try that.I am in zone 7 as well maryland.
Maryland 7. Red cups work well. Please visit my new blog www.therustedgardenblog.com Join this channel ($3.99 a month) to get access to Live Chat Garden Mentoring Q&A Perks: th-cam.com/channels/ptL6_qMImyW_yZwiMjQdpg.htmljoin
Can the larger cells height play a part as well? Not sure how much higher the amount of light received would be by the seedlings being 1 inch or so closer to the grow light, assuming all containers were under the same light. I was messing around with a PPFD App and the difference in a couple inches closer to the light was surprising
Height helps as it adds to the volume. But I dont think the intensity of the light would matter that much. As the larger equal height cells also showed greater better growth. What zone are you? I am in N. E. Wis and started my plants late Jan 23 years ago. My house became a forest from transplanting them. Lol lessons. 😅😊 Thanks for sharing

I guess this video is just for demonstration to portrait how far you can grow tomatoes within 4 weeks, or are you going to do something else with them until season starts in zone 7? Just asking, because here in zone 8a you should not transplant tomatoes outside (no greenhouse) before mid of may to be safe.
They are just prop plant so they actually wont make it to the garden here in Maryland. I will start my real transplants in March, Please visit my new blog www.therustedgardenblog.com Join this channel ($3.99 a month) to get access to Live Chat Garden Mentoring Q&A Perks: th-cam.com/channels/ptL6_qMImyW_yZwiMjQdpg.htmljoin
Every year, I have to fight the desire to grow tomatoes like I did in the past when the weather in Maryland was normal. I used to start in March and plant in end of April, but no longer.
They weather has changed quite a bit. Please visit my new blog www.therustedgardenblog.com Join this channel ($3.99 a month) to get access to Live Chat Garden Mentoring Q&A Perks: th-cam.com/channels/ptL6_qMImyW_yZwiMjQdpg.htmljoin
So, it is at least 12 weeks too soon to put out all of your tomatoes and other plants. Will you be up potting them into larger pots until safe to put them out? I think you have an unheated greenhouse if I remember right.
So you can see them in videos. They are props. And see them ahead of the growing season. Please visit my new blog www.therustedgardenblog.com Join this channel ($3.99 a month) to get access to Live Chat Garden Mentoring Q&A Perks: th-cam.com/channels/ptL6_qMImyW_yZwiMjQdpg.htmljoin

Here we go again. Four more days, and I start seeds for my, and my mother's gardens. First on the list is onions, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower.
How funny. That is my fall planting in CA. They are all already biiig.
Cheers to 2025! Stay well.
I noticed last year the root systems on a lot of my transplants was not as established using the coco coir and fertilizing myself versus using the miracle gro potting mix I've used in the past. Do you think they just needed more fertilizer?
I would give them more fertilizer but I like peat based starting mix better.

Very happy to help and good luck in 2025

Would you be able to tell me the size dimensions of the different cells you used? I am still relatively new and I cannot tell the exact size just by looking at them. Awesome video thank you.
I dont know them off the top of my head. But they are listed on the website.

What is your opinion on using the red solo cups ho up pot a seedling from one of the six cell containers?i have seen various gardeners try that.I am in zone 7 as well maryland.
Maryland 7. Red cups work well.

I’m assuming the same goes for peppers?
Yeah. Peppers are slower growers, I'll be doing a video on it when the size difference shows.

I will start my real transplants in March,

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you for clarification.
Every year, I have to fight the desire to grow tomatoes like I did in the past when the weather in Maryland was normal. I used to start in March and plant in end of April, but no longer.
They weather has changed quite a bit.

So, it is at least 12 weeks too soon to put out all of your tomatoes and other plants. Will you be up potting them into larger pots until safe to put them out? I think you have an unheated greenhouse if I remember right.
So why are you planting in December if you grow starts in 5 weeks and cant plant out till may?
So you can see them in videos. They are props. And see them ahead of the growing season.
