This was the peak of his ego for me. Nothing provoking it, outside the alcohol, and at a point where he 100% had just gotten away with everything. He could've kept his nose out of anything that would've given away what he was really up to, and never have been caught ever. Possibly had even stopped making meth for good and kept all the money. This was the moment he couldn't do that, all because Hank threw out that word, "genius." Walt's ego was like, "Hell no!"
Can't blame Walt here for his ego trip. Dealing with cancer and finally feeling alive made him make a silly mistake. Hank always looked up to Walt and that is why Hank never gave up. This goes to show how great the writers are for this show.
What do you mean that you can’t blame Walt? He was good enough to work for just about any company anywhere as a chemist. He chose to start making drugs, and decided on a fast track to stroke his own ego, destroying everyone’s lives around him as a consequence. He wanted to feel alive and like a big man. All else be damned. We can blame Walt. It wasn’t cancer that made him who he is: he was always that guy.
Walt was never acknowledged or appreciated as a genius though. That’s why he yearned so much to be seen for what he was. He was constantly overlooked and belittled before he became Heisenberg. You gotta love Hank’s humility, deferring to Walt’s offhand opinion over an investigation Hank helped get closed. Hank doesn’t try to fight Walt on this or get his ego hurt over it. Just believes him and keeps digging.
I love rewatching scenes and catching small things. Like I never remembered about this scene is what Hank says that triggers Walt’s ego to respond in this way. Boy if he could have applied that big brain of his to something good, I don’t know. He could have helped humanity or something like that.”
Hank is a good case study of a guy who lives and breathes his job. Even when chilling with family and friends, you can tell that his work is always front and center on his mind.
