@@barbariangamin5136 I think they're referring to the authors intention, as well as what the cinematography most naturally lead to. Also art is hugely normative, with subjective and objective elements.
Ooh thank you for drawing my attention to how angry Jesse looks in this scene. It's something I'd never noticed before but it makes sense cos he's a good hearted man who always balks at needless violence so it totally reads that his response would be rage
Also as we see in the diner he's totally detached from any worry, not really caring what happens now he's crossed a line and killed Gale. So he feels free to confront Gus with pure hatred, no more hesistation left.
Good hearted?why is eveyone acting like jesse is a christian church going family man who donates half his income to charity?he is a drug producer/dealer and did so many bad things during the series, not saying he is completely evil but definetely not someone i would consider good
The way the audience is naturally predisposed to look down on Jesse and empathize with Walt in the beginning and the way it’s completely subverted by the end is probably the biggest masterstroke of the entire series. Jesse is a degenerate drug user, but he truly has a good heart, he’s not without ambition, but every time he’s has to forsake his morality you can feel him fight it, his arc is one in which he tries to be a better person and is consistently pushed to be worse by Walt, every time he fights back he’s punished, but he continues to try to do the right thing. Killing Gale and later seeing the skinheads kill that innocent kid messes him up in a way that Walt doesn’t need to reconcile with. At the end of the day Jessie may kind of be a piece of shit, but he’s a victim in so many ways and it feels like he deserves better. He’s in an evil world the whole story revolves around making and selling meth, Jessie gets treated like he’s a natural part of that world, but apart from being a user and maybe a small time dealer in the beginning, it doesn’t feel like it’s his world, but Walt makes it his world from the moment he kills that dude in the first season, he’s on a path going one direction and it can only end one way. Jessie has hope, he IS hope, that’s what he’s meant to represent at the end of the day.
IMO jesse's expression to victor being sliced isn't purely anger but more something along the lines of "ready to fight". It's like ferocity mixed with fear as he watches Gus very carefully. It also seems like Walter and Mike "lost their footing" and sense of control whereas Jesse was already indifferent/detached to the whole situation beforehand. Jesse's reaction also involves actual mental steps/ reasoning whereas Walter and Mike react out of pure instinct.
@@jexotic1470 You know, normally when people see something they view as superfluous, they just ignore it. You might want to ask yourself why you decided to take the time to put down a stranger on the internet. Hope you get better! :)
That's what we describe as anger, though. Not just personal disapproval, but also the signalling that you are looking for a confrontation, the challenging look on the face. "Staring daggers at someone", forward posture, textbook angry body language. It's not because Jesse loves confrontation in general, it's a deliberate reaction to the situation.
i watched this expecting it to be from a channel with a couple thousand subs and i was extremely surprised to see how underrated your channel is dude amazing stuff

The power in Vince Gilligan's work is really about recognizing subtleties that actors bring. Jesse was supposed to die in the first season and Gus was cast in a bit part as a "friendly man who sells chicken". They could have gone merrily on with the original ideas, but wisely rewrote the scripts to fit the actors. Walter needed the father/son dynamic that develops to bring out his character. Jesse is a key part of his legacy. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Esposito brought such a quiet menace to his character that his presence demanded a bigger role. There is simply no way to replicate that dynamic. The script followed the cast, so a different cast would require a different story.
@@memestealer6348 It's actually really amusing that this scene wouldn't have existed in any way at all if it wasn't for how Vince and the team did Breaking Bad. Jesse would've been long dead before this scene, Gus wouldn't have been a villain, and Mike wouldn't have even been a character at all. Defitely a good argument for why sometimes you shouldn't follow the script you set at the start before you started to get a good feel for the actors you're working with and the characters they're playing.
@@AestheticGamertbf, there are plenty of examples of a part being written specifically for a person and that working out great (basically, anytime Tarantino has a part for Sam Jackson lol). But I think this still applies there cause they may even have notes about the character
This is an extreme shock to me. The show is so great, scaling and coherent that I believed that every episode was written before the first season was completed. Incredible.
@aimilios439 It is crazy, but it also makes sense once you look for it. The story seems coherent directly as a result of organic character development. They continuously asked "Where is
It's crazy the amount of thought that goes into absolutely everything. This video does a great job at showing just how genius Breaking Bad was about not just getting the little details right, but also going above and beyond to get things like the framing right, the subtle camera tricks that enhance the scene, and even music or a lack of music to emphasize important elements.
I remember the first time I saw this scene, the moment that terrified me was when Mike reactively pointed his gun at Gus. Mike is so capable and trusted by the audience, that for him to be surprised and threatened.
@@sneel444 I gotchu bro. That for him to be surprised and threatened not only shows that Mike isn't fully in control but also makes the audience realise that shit has truly and fully hit the fan.
8:26 I know this is most likely an accidental but I like to think there's symbolism in that shot. Specifically at the end of the shot Gus' head covers a gap between two steel beams in the background, possibly symbolising that Gus is what holds everything together or that he's arrived to patch a fresh hole in his plans to replace Walter.
I really like this observation. I never try to read so much into a particular moment, mainly to avoid a "Bravo Vince", but that's a very good explanation for that placement.
I can't believe how much that made me laugh. I'm not even trying to clown you, it's a good observation. But having frequented r/bettercallsaul for 5 years as the show ran, these types of comments always get me
I love videos that explore some of the more forgotten pieces of dialogue because they really show how much thought and care was placed into every second of this show.
This is by far the best explanation of everything that happens here, including why Victor behaves the way he does and why that leads to his death. Thanks!
Really good video. It's incredible how an actors delivery could have the littlest change, but could actually be the biggest difference for the tonality and context of the situation.

Well as far as Jesse goes maybe Gale is on his mind but I get more of a sense that he thinks he is going to die and his last hour of life is spent sitting next to the guy that ruined his life and he won't stf up to boot. It's the feeling I get when I get stuck with a coworker I can't stand or when I was young and got in trouble and the punishment is soon to come. I just want to shell up and get it over with.
Yea I get the feeling he knows he’s been taken there to be killed, and he’s chill with it. Disassociated maybe? I think they changed it because look where the direction of the blood goes to. Jesse. It might have been changed so the visual thought process is that the blood is literally on walter who is responsible for this.
Wow !! Mentioning Okupas was fascinating. As an Argentinian I believe Okupas is one of the greatest series made here. It really does portray our lenguage, and what you would expect in marginalized people from the city. It's really not that famous here. You MUST watch "Los Simuladores" which is probably also top tier argentinian television. Please make a video if you ever do :)
Okupas fue un boom, y más después de que lo subieron a netflix. Pasa que obvio, afuera de Argentina no fue muy popular, pero en los 2000 todos hablaban de la serie.
I really enjoyed this assessment and comparison. Both in how it allowed me to understand more closely how the original show achieved such a visceral authenticity in these moments, and how it can be completely missed if not approached in the correct manner. Really interesting video thanks for creating it
I just subscribed after Andy Serkis's analysis, and I have to say... I never imagined you would finish this one with an Argentinian comparison. I'm from Argentina and I loved Okupas, and it's really interesting to compare the two characters. I think you really have a special eye for these things, and like you said, Okupas is more along the lines of showing the marginalized youth in Buenos Aires, and a sharp critique of the social and economic conditions that we had during the early 2000s. It could be really interesting to see another analysis of it from you! Anyways, love the content! Thanks for sharing and keep on working on it!
It's interesting how what you think is one of your worst videos is one of your best in my opinion. I appreciate you taking time to explain the nuance of this scene as it has always been one of my favorite moments in the show.
@@mmeister8582 no offense towards the british one by all means... but it ran for only a couple of episodes until it stopped airing, the Office US on the other hand clearly made its own mark and surpassed the original by far with (really good) character development and story arcs. Kudos to Ricky for coming up with the original idea, which was already cool and all, but it was someone else who took it and made it HUGE. Breaking Bad is a totally different story. It was soon regarded as one of the best TV shows ever and it had a tremendous impact. There was zero potential for a remake to begin with.
As a musician, I can say that practicing and performing are very different. Doing a straight cover over making my own interpretation of a song is more meaningful, and relevant to me and my brand. I think it’s something all artists do. Not saying it’s good or bad. Just saying
This was quite an excellent break down of the two scenes. Very good job at going into the smaller details of what makes the scenes work or not work. I think you did a great job at showcasing how writing isn't just words written down or the dialogue itself, but everything happening together to make a scene. We can extrapolate a lot from very small details. Excellent video!
The adaptation Just can't work anyway, especially as a shot for shot remake, because part of the Breaking Bad world is the setting. The series is partly about the relationship between the US and Mexico, on the border. The fact that Walt is based in America matters to the story a great deal.
I don't think I've ever subbed so fast to a channel! This was an amazing, well thought out introspective take! I truly appreciate the time you put into this! Looking forward to more! 👏👏👏
How tf do you have so few followers. The video is of great quality. I learned a lot and the idea to compare the two was great. From acting to editing it was really inspiring to see how "small" decisions create drastically different results. I think by showing this you kinda solve the problem we have with film analysis. It's often bloated and overcomplicated. The person who does the analyzing is often times grasping for straws and it feels like justifying things after the fact just for d*ck riding a director they love. But here, you literally show what happens if you don't, as a director, over analyse your shots. It makes those editing and acting choices real.
You just made my Saturday brighter. Greetings and thank you very much for those words, welcome to the channel, and I hope the rest of the videos live up to your expectations
The Okupas reference was a surprise, but a welcome one. I'd definitely love to see a video on it! (El Marginal could be a good pick too, in a similar vein)
Rewatching this scene now, I just noticed 14:38; half of Gus' face covered in blood, foreshadowing his own fate at the end of the season, which literally ends with half his face "covered in blood" (so to speak),
You really made me appreciate how well thought out and how well shot the original Breaking bad is. Thanks dude. I always thought it was brilliant but when everything is laid out like this it really is amazing.
great video and great understanding of what's going on in each frame. tho i would challenge one minor point you make. At 12:40, Mike isn't disavowing his boss. He's shocked, sure. But he raises his gun the way a dog would bear his teeth if he saw his owner abruptly attack another person. The confusion is there. But who is and who isn't a threat is never in question. Mike drew his gun one-handed and kept it loosely pointed center-mass at Victor. His only concern was making sure Victor wouldn't be able to cause any damage to Gus
METÁSTASISSSS that's a throwback for me, I used to watch it just to see how it compared to BrBa and well, this vid sums it up well lol. U just got a new subscriber! Keep it up man, well done 👍
I think the most brutal part is how victor tries to turn toward the cut, either to bite gus or simply slow the bleeding by closing the wound, but Gus just grabs his head again and forces the wound open. Getting blood everywhere.
12:31 I understand the consensus has kind of shifted to "walter is evil" but to chalk his reaction up to fesring for his own life is really strange to me. First of all, he's shocked, second, he's disturbed by the horror occurring before his eyws, and yes, third, he's frigthened at this newly unpredictable version of gus that he has no way of reasoning with.
Great analysis! And thanks for mentioning Okupas. It really changed everything here in terms of tv and cinema. It opened a lot of doors for new productions.
I was gonna check it out, and then he spoiled the hell out of it. I don't know why he did that. especially without any warnings. but yeah, it sounds cool/interesting. I probably would've watched it and enjoyed it.
I like your video essay take and editing in this video. There's a lot of talking, but it's captivating. It was great to see such a deep take on this scene; comparing it with the Latin American version really shows how remarkable the series was. This kind of acting nuance needs this kind of attention, thank you. I’m coming from a video I made recently showing how the same(ish) script in Silent Hill 2’s remake fundamentally alters character motivations and the message the scene is conveying, just like here with Breaking Bad.

Great comparison and analysis! I wasn't really aware of this Colombian version and that it tells the exact same story. I think there's another interpretation of the scene where Jesse is staring in anger at Gus. Jesse just got back from killing Gale in cold blood, and has clearly been dissociated up until then, contemplating the weight of his actions. When he sees Gus kill Victor in cold blood, he sees a cold-blooded killing not dissimilar from the cold-blooded killing he just committed hours before. So when he gives Gus a look of hatred and disgust, Jesse's actually projecting his own self-hatred onto Gus because Jesse can't cope with how he just murdered Gale.
Me salió este video en recomendaciones y di click pensando que era un plagio, pero escuché la voz y dije "aah, no, es el mismo Carbón expandiéndose al mercado gringo". Bien ahí.
The only thing missing was the color red. Idk if that was on purpose and we were just supposed to look at framing and reactions but color is a huge part of Breaking Bad. The other version doesn’t have that. At least from what i could tell its one of the few times that Jesse wears red. Walter is in Blue because well its blue meth. Not sure of the reason of Mikes color. I really got into color because of this one analysis of Blade Runner 2049 that explained color and framing really well and I can’t find it anymore. How much care you can tell he puts into those shots. One is when you see K tell a lie in the precinct and sees that is something that he can do. Otherwise really great. I learned things from this scene i wouldn’t have otherwise. This is a really good analysis. I was really taking in all you had to say. Thank you so much.

this is probably the first time i'm hearing about "illustrative vs. cinematic language". you made me realize just how much thought and passion was put into this show. i think that in just 16 minutes of watching, my media literacy has improved a bit. i hope you make more videos like this!
Are those formal terms or a distinction he made up?
@@spaghetto9836 real terms, but they're rarely mentioned by name, and as far as I can tell, even more rarely directly compared. They're more things that artists (illustrators and cinematographers both) develop over their practice.

Loved the anaysis of the power dynamic within both scenes, really adds to outlning why the tones are so different, really engaging video man
thanks a lot, man, really appreciate it coming from someone like you!
This is a very surface level observation. Not sure why you thought you had a bingo moment

Don't forget Mike existing only because Bob Odenkirk wasn't available to film for one day
@@memestealer6348 It's actually really amusing that this scene wouldn't have existed in any way at all if it wasn't for how Vince and the team did Breaking Bad.

That said.

This is by far the best explanation of everything that happens here, including why Victor behaves the way he does and why that leads to his death. Thanks!

Really good video. It's incredible how an actors delivery could have the littlest change, but could actually be the biggest difference for the tonality and context of the situation.

Breaking Bad is a totally different story. It was soon regarded as one of the best TV shows ever and it had a tremendous impact. There was zero potential for a remake to begin with.

Not even close I mean okupas is a masterpiece
Rewatching this scene now, I just noticed 14:38; half of Gus' face covered in blood, foreshadowing his own fate at the end of the season, which literally ends with half his face "covered in blood" (so to speak),
Very well written, your channel deserves more attention
You really made me appreciate how well thought out and how well shot the original Breaking bad is. Thanks dude. I always thought it was brilliant but when everything is laid out like this it really is amazing.
Please do more like this! Fantastic analysis
great video and great understanding of what's going on in each frame. tho i would challenge one minor point you make.
0:11 well this was made in someone's backyard with a phone and the other cost millions xD probably
I think, every episode of Breaking Bad had a budget of 1 Million

What a great way to show why thoughtful decisions when editing and directing are incredibly important.
I think the most brutal part is how victor tries to turn toward the cut, either to bite gus or simply slow the bleeding by closing the wound, but Gus just grabs his head again and forces the wound open. Getting blood everywhere.
this is incredible analysis - from acting, directing, filmmaking perspective. hats off for taking the time.

That was a great video I’d love to see more of these deep comparisons!
