Siphon nozzle waste oil burner DIY build - part 1 - compressor scavenging

  • A viewer suggested using a fridge compressor as the source of the compressed air for the siphon nozzle. Goes to show that not throwing things away does sometimes pay off.
So now I've got the air source, next time will be burning fuel.

David, the plastic fittings have to go. And, a paste of my comment ref lubricant. The way to get around it is to connect them to “x” using a length of air line, and just raise that air line a foot or so. Any lubricant that exits just runs back down the pipe. I fill a 47kg bottle up to 120 psi with one. Incredible little machines. Obviously one should never never bloody ever have the pressure side closed off.

You could use the heat of the compressor to heat the waste oil / diesel. Of course you will need a very good air filter. To keep all the very fine contaminants ( plus air moisture)
from mixing with the compressor oil. ( tricky)
Always a fun project when fire, oil , spray are involved. 😅

As the compressor is water tight at the bottom, you could sit it in a bath with a recirculating pump onto a radiator, to keep it cool ??😉

Can’t wait for part two Ty for playing with them now ….now u just gotta get the right size to fit in a cdh lol oooooo I can’t wait lol

I just received my siphon nozzle from China, so this video was perfect timing. Excellent video and loved the A/C compressor idea, had not thought of that one.
I have 1.0 mm nozzle size which will be used with waste oil. I have a small air pump which seems to get up to 10 PSI with lots of air flow, will see how it goes.

Cool... can't wait to see more of this ! I have had the nozzle parts for almost a year now and have wanted to build an actual waste oil burner, but never have enough time. I'm surprised that the pump had enough flow ... I knew they had lots of pressure, but thought the flow ate would be much too low.
I tested my nozzle with a 50W aquarium pump (with water) and it seemed to work okay, but not as good as your setup... It's also pretty easy to get one of those pump for free, and they are quite and dependable.

imagine been able to run this in a tankless water setup, where it just lights instantly and you just have good heat

made a few things using fridge compressors, used 3 in parallel to make a silent compressor for the garage and the pressure they make is fantastic. try them in series for high-pressure frolics;-)

And last but not least, the compressor usually has a recirculating oil lubricant carried by the refrigerant to stop the compressor from seizing. I would suggest some oil down the air intake daily or more

Most of the oil should stay in the compressor as long as I don't let it get too hot. But I'll get a bottle of POE oil to top it up with.

Make sure the compressor does not run out of lubricating oil.

I would ditch the air con compressor and use a motor and a hydraulic power steering pump. The oil will cool the pump sufficiently.

Any risk of the nozzle getting clogged and the compressor blowing up the hose? Worth putting a pressure switch on the feed line to the power to the compressor?

I wasn't even going to think about safety until at least the third video. :)

Fridge compressors I'm sure lubricate through oil in the refrigerant gas. So failure could occur due to no lubricant.. I could be wrong though

Or even better, use it to pre heat the oil going to the burner

David are you going to use the fuel oil to lubricate the compressor in some fashion?

    • @Dirt-Diggler

A drip feed of 2stroke oil into the air intake possibly 🤔

I'm just going to add POE Oil occasionally.

      You're thinking waste engine oil.

  • @jim4556

im not a big fan of these nozzles. compressing air takes a lot of energy I think id rather use a small blower motor and have the oil pumped into a fine nozzle like a fuel injector instead. you should have saw how much "fuel" it pumped to get an idea of how much heat this could make. based on the size of that vapor cloud.. this is going to be very high. like 80,000 BTU or more unless you restrict it more.

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I've tried the fuel pump and nozzle with unacceptable results. It might be better with much higher pressures but now you are into expensive pumps and injectors and dangerous levels of pressure. I'm happy to use 500W on the compressor to get 20KW of heat out.

@@DavidMcLuckieyeah there's a reason pretty much all waste oil burners on the market use this style and not high pressure fuel. If they haven't been able to do it it's likely not going to work out.
