RAW FOOD TIPS: BUYING FRUIT AT THE SUPERMARKET?

  • FREE EBOOKLET www.sweetnaturalliving.com Getting quality food is one of the most important aspects of healthy eating. On a raw food diet it's no different. That's why it's essential to understand that most of the time, there are exceptions, but most of the time the supermarket is NOT a good place to buy fruits and vegetables.
    To succeed on a raw vegan diet it is essential that we find quality fruits that are ripe and sweet to satisfy our needs. Unripe fruits without their sugar content will not satisfy and is a recipe for failure on the high carb, low fat raw vegan diet.
    Part of why the supermarket is not the best place to buy fruit has to do with how the fruit industry works on a mass scale. Fruit is picked early, kept in cold storage, "ripened" with gas and often handled poorly. It's usually almost impossible to find good quality produce, fresh fruits and vegetables in a supermarket. The whole system is based on delivering food consistently. This means the farmer usually picks all the fruits at once, even though they are not all ripe. He has to deliver a certain volume of produce at a specific time to get paid. Then this huge delivery is taken through a big system of transport and storage, until finally, sometimes months later, it's in the supermarket ready to be bought by the consumer.
    Small scale farming and markets are a completely different story. Here the farmer will pick the fruit at a later stage in it's development because he knows it's only going to the local market. He might even be the one taking it there and sometimes he will even sell it himself! This way is much better and you will be able to get the freshest most delicious and ripe fruits this way.
    Get to know your farmers. Get to know your food sources. Fresh food is always local food!
    We need sugar to fuel our cells! Simple carbohydrates are the best source of fuel for the human body. Unless we get the sweet, ripe and juicy fruits we simply will not be satisfied and we will fail on the raw vegan diet!
    Eating fruit unripe is not healthy. It contains anti nutrients and does not contain it's full compliment of nutrition coming from the earth, water, wind and sun when it hangs on the tree to mature perfectly.
    On the raw food diet, we eat the food as is, and if it's not tasting good, it's not healthy. People on conventional cooked diets season, spice and process their food so much it almost "doesn't matter" if the original ingredients taste good or not, but for someone eating natural food, raw fruits and vegetables, it's essential that the products themselves are of the highest possible quality!

    @Julian: They might be better than fast food yes, but they are still far from ideal. Let's strive for the ideal, why not? We have billions of people yes, that's exactly why we should focus on local fruit production. Nothing is as productive as fruit, so to feed the world, fruit is the answer!

    Speaking from experience, working at a health food store in the produce department. Ripe fruit either never goes out to the floor or if it stays out there till it ripens it gets pulled and spoiled out. Because according to the company I work for "it's not to our quality standard." Which is funny because ripe fruit is the definition of quality. It might not all look pretty but the quality of the texture and flavor are at the prime. But that's not what people care about, they want it to look and feel consistent and uniform with zero flaws. Sad world we live in, everyone's (or at least most peoples) priorities are fucked.
    On the upside though a pretty big chunk of that ripe fruit goes to the break room for all of us to eat.

    I live in England and I am only 14 so my family hasn't fully excepted my lifestyle choice of fruitarianism but since fruit is all I eat,my mum buys it for me at the supermarkets.Its mostly unripe but,I eat it because I have decided to be a fruitarian and deffently not going back.

      +Catherine Mitchell Sounds good, you'll learn over time and slowly you'll be able to find the best stuff. Since you're in England I would make bananas a main staple. A big banana lunch is usually a good idea. Other than that, go with your mom and try showing her what you want. Learn about fruit and how to select ripe fruit. Send me a message any time if you have any questions!

    Sweet Natural Living: First: I love your channel I find it, natural, honest, fun and helpful. I live the fruit based lifestyle in Budapest Hungary with my gf for more than 2 years now on and off the track. I know 3 families doing this lifestyle. Family number one started 2 years ago: they were buying everything they could from organic markets and they had trouble financially so they changed to conventional although the father earned 4 times more money than for example my own sister does. Now he works here and the wife with the 2 most adorable children ever are in a tropical jungle in Indonesia. They plan to move to Hawaii together very soon to start a new life. Family number 2 had more money and they were living exclusively on fruits from carefully selected local organic produce from farmers who picked it as ripe as possible. 4 years after the start now they are in Bangkok searching for a new home in the world. Family number 3 started 2 years ago. They have their big garden/small farm situation on the countryside eating everything they can from the garden, but they still complin that something is not 100% satisfying. And here I am trying to be minimum 2 months a year in the tropics, and constantly searching the internet for communities and farms to visit in the tropical region to find a new home. The thing is if everyone would live a fruit based diet in europe than things would change fast. there would be thousands more local varieties available there would be fruit trees literally everwhere like along the roads and in all the gardens. Fruit would be picked ripe and than stored exactly at 4 grade celsius to preserve and families would go to pick their fruit on farms 3 times a week rather than going into the supermarket, and a lot more tropical fruits would be imported. but that's not the case. Most people I know have no idea what a ripe fruit is. Anything ripe at the groceries is sold with a discount, as the majority wouldn't buy it. Temperate climate is not the biggest problem here in europe. It is the people who don't give a shit about quality. Farmers, traders and consumers alike, but there is hope on the temperate climate. There are delicious fruits to eat at least in the summer. Here is my listin summer: Heirloom tomatoes, nectarines, melons, grapes, strawberries and mulberry in autumn apples (hard to find good qualit though, but possible) and persimmons (which could be grown locally but we only have imported ones in the markets) and mediocre quality frozen durian which we can buy in only 2 shops in my country , and that alone is better than everything else I listed here.:) I wish you peace love and permaculture.:)

      Yes! Transporting ripe fruit isn't easy, and if it needs to be done on a large scale it's practically impossible. Supermarkets will always be quite that way.
      However, what needs to change, and what will change, is that we will focus more on small scale distribution. We must buy our fruits on a more regular basis. From local farmers growing food for local distribution. Growing some of our food ourselves will also help. We must be ok with unpredictable, but secure, food supply. We must eat seasonal. According to where we are.
      I think it is changing already, and fast too. People all over the world are getting more and more into local food, organic food, fresh food, whole food, local farmers markets, food food food....it's a revolution! Not back to nature, but forward!

    I am trying raw since few weeks in Germany
    and a good strategy is to buy unripe fruit and let it sit at your home. Then you come home and eat whats in season.
    Bananas ripe fairly quickly apples and pears can be bought nearly done and I eat 1 package of dried fruits a day.
    Some stores sell ripe fruit for half the price, since it is nt shiny.
    Go to the supermarkets one hour before they close, then you will find some stuff.
    Well see.

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      San Diego would probably be much better than the midwest yes! Southern France is OK. In my experience the closer you get to the tropics the better it gets, but only the tropics are ideal in terms of fruit. Bananas to the rescue though :) I recommend eating a lot of those!

    But most fruits still ripen after they are picked. I buy pears from the supermarket when they are hard, but after a week they are sweet and juicy.

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some fruits ripen after picking, some don't. Watermelon for example does not. Bananas, pears, papayas do. But there's more to the issue. Ripening isn't always "true ripening". If the fruit is picked too early in it's growing process, it will never reach the same levels of ripeness and nutritional level. IF something is picked way too early, the softening process is more of a decaying process than a true enzymatically driven ripening.
      Basically you want to look for the fruit that is the most ripe WHILE still being the freshest. If it's really old and still not ripe you know it was picked too early, whereas if it's super fresh AND ripe, you know it must have ripened a fair bit on the tree! It's a fine science, and we must simply learn the hard way I think, slowly gaining experience over time! It's a lot of fun though :)

    The way i see it and from what you've said from the videos, if you dont live near the tropics, or at least close to a tropical zone where at least half of the fruit you mentioned here can be grown locally, it is not sustainable to go full vegan.You keep mentioning "eat tropical and local fruits".What if you live in the UK? or northern europe? Generally colder areas of the world where every tropical fruit is exported or at supermarkets unripe, aren't suited for your vegan diet. Thats what ive gathered at least Let me know if im wrong.

    As much as relocating to the tropics is ideal, it simply isn't an option for many in this world. So for those of us not in a position to move we should get what few ripe fruits we can when we can and go for the starchy veggies that need cooking as kind of the next best thing? Wanting to make sure I can get what nutritious foods are available. The tropics would be fantastic, but its not in the cards at the moment. I love your channel! :)

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dana Oosterom Yes I think in that case do your best to find high quality imported tropical fruits, seasonal local fruits where you are and then for the rest of the year do your best. Depending on location and what you can find, all raw is definitely possible, the question is whether or not you will do it. The choice is a personal one, but if you choose to eat cooked starches then yes I think that's still pretty good! Maybe taking a trip to the tropics during deep winter is also a good idea to top up on sunshine, vitamin D and awesome fruits!
      Glad you like the channel :D

      Thanks so much! I live in the southeast US bt towords the mountains. So we can get very snowy and freezing winters, fantastic spring and fall, and hot and humid summers. Summers have fantastic farmers markets and I already eat vegan, about 2/3 raw. ITs especially important because my husband eats like crap and I have two young sons. My 8 year old however is showing more tendency and interest in how I eat and always asks me to buy fruit. But like you say, finding good quality fruit in winters can be impossible; especially tropical fruit. So finding the next best thing is super important now. Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

    I am newly vegan again. I went vegan a few years ago and lost over 100 lbs. I felt amazing and I wish I had never stopped this lifestyle. But I am here again and ready to commit to making healthy changes for good. I am very interested in eating a lot more fruit and making it the majority of my diet. Maybe 100% one day soon. I love your channel. You are really inspiring! You explained my situation perfectly. I have tried and tried a raw vegan diet and never got satisfied with the shitty fruit in my stores. I definitely need to find a location near me where I can get the fruits you recommend. I have a question... Should I refrigerate my fruits or leave them room temperature?

      Zdislav und Vera Wegner There are some fruits that will ripen after picking, but they will never be AS good as if they were PICKED ripe. Other fruits, like oranges and pineapples for example, will not ripen further and has to be picked at a ripe stage, which they almost NEVER are.

  • @kingaxron
    @kingaxron 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Isn't it hard to find ripe fruits in the winter, or do you switch to nuts or something?

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's hard, that's why we try to stay in the tropics where it's suitable for humans year round. Switching to nuts wouldn't really work as fat don't satisfy as well as carbohydrates. If it was simply no fruit around, I would go for cooked starches like potatoes and sweet potatoes instead. But ideally, I would rather not compromise at all and just stay in the right location.

  • @revolution6269

  • @jossl8076
    @jossl8076 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I saw you wrote below that you switch to starches like potatoes in the winter, and I can see in your other videos that you have bananas and dateorade but what else do you eat/drink in the winter in Norway when there isn't much available?

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I avoid being in Norway during winter, and I pretty much enjoy a perpetual summer by travelling around, mostly in the tropics. So no I don't really eat starches, and I keep it raw, except I did it for a short period a few months ago when I found myself in Norway during Christmas. I prefer to avoid being in the situation of lacking fruit in the first place, that way I don't have to compromise at all.
      If you're in a situation of not enough fruit, you must simply do your best to eat as much fresh, raw food as possible, rely on bananas a lot and if you choose to eat cooked food then potatoes, sweet potatoes and beans are the best choices in my opinion.

    • @jossl8076
      @jossl8076 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, here in the UK our oranges are always orange, and I've always enjoyed pears, the yellow type of melon is pretty delicious as well then when summer comes around a few other types of fruit become available. I'm aiming to sustain myself on as much raw food as possible for health/moral reasons but it is tough and expensive.

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Sounds good. Yes it is difficult when you're not in the tropics, since the fruit is simply not the best. But doing your best is good enough! Expensive? I find that I don't spend more than most people on food, even in Norway and the UK. Plus if you factor in the money you are saving by not being sick etc, it makes it even better. But, we deserve the best, and I'm willing to invest in my health as it's important to me and I dig good food!

    i have never gone to a local store in my life. i live in columbia south carolina and only shop at kroger and publix. i am a bodybuilder and eat mostly vegatables and seeds, i eat fruit in the morning and throughout the day, so i am not fruitarian by any means, but i have seen muscle gains eating this way. i consume about 3,500 calories a day tho. i have some advice for you, the "ideal" is almost impossible in the day in age. you are so concerned on how to make your diet "optimal" you ignore other health aspects like sometimes settling for less then optimal and just going for healthy. i think ortherexia is stupid but if anyone has it you do, you are just so focused on the healthiest food possible you will never eat anything less of that, like saying you wouldnt eat a fruit because it may have been "damaged" by slightly cold temperatures, or just because something is not 100% fully ripe you will not eat it. this is not meant as a personal attack or to be mean ( i love your channel) but you need to lighten up about the list of foods that you have made in your mind that you consider good, and anything less of that is bad. oh and here is what i eat in a day (i eat the same thing everyday)
    breakfast-1 cup grapes,4-5 small oranges, full pint strawberries, 1 cup blueberries, 1 kiwi, 1/4 cup sunflower seeds, 2 tbsp chia, 2 tbsp flax, 1 blueberry muffin larabar.
    lunch- blueberry muffin larabar, 1 full head romaine lettuce, 2.5 cups spinach.
    dinner- 3 servings baby carrots, 4 large stalks celery, 2 large cucumbers, 2 bell peppers (red or orange) 1-2 avocados, - smoothie- 2 bananas, 2 servings frozen mixed berry medly, 1/2 scoop sunwarrior natural protien ( 4 ingredients, hemp, pea, goji, coconut,) 80 grams kale, 2 cups water. 1-2 servings doctor in the kitchen raw savory flax crakers. 2 tbsp chia, 1 tbsp flax 3 tbsp sunflower seeds.

    i dont have fresh tropical fruit growrrds in my area, because i dont live in tropical area (NSW) there is some tropical fruit at supermarket but its picked early as you said. What should i do? also because where i live is a realitively small/medium town i havent seen a fruit market either but there might be one if i look hard but i dont think so

      Lizard King The best idea is to rely on bananas as your main meal for the day. For me, when I'm in a situation like that, bananas account for probably 60% of my daily calories. Other than that do your best to find something juicy for breakfast and dinner. What about custard apples, they should be peaking right now in NSW! They are one of my absolute favourite fruits!

    • @lizardking7176
      @lizardking7176 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok thanks, i will do that :D just bought a bunch of bananas today. As for custard apples, since i watched your cherimoya video i have bean on the lookout for them and i was almost sure i woould be able to find them at Coles but ive gone there nearly every day and havent seen one! Where i used to live in Sydney (i hated it because of the pollution) there was custard apples in every store and there was two fruit markets as well... but here everything else is better except the fruit avaliability. I havent looked at woolworths though and ill probably go there on the weekend to have a look :D ill also have a better look around neighbouring suburbs for fruit markets at growers markets :D thanks!

    pineapples, tomatoes, bananas, peaches, peats, nectarines, avocados... there are many fruits that ripen after they've been picked.

    • @bestever3922
      @bestever3922 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but they are often picked way before it ripens which makes it sour and not nearly as tasty. I'm not sure what he said by it being in edible but the quality is much worse

    • @user-xx7pg3vw9k
      @user-xx7pg3vw9k 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      best ever of course. The ideal thing is to grow your own food and pick it fresh. But having said that, pineapple and pear can be FABULOUS ripened at home. It just requires patience!

      @bestever3922 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +T. B. When it's picked way to early and it's not sweet. It ends up being sour. It's still good but it's not optimal like he said

      Pineapples only get softer and juicier. NOT sweeter or less acidic. So, no they dont rippen after harvest.

    I am quite new to the idea of a raw vegan diet, and I am finding it fascinating. I live in Canada, where there are many different wonderful seasonal fruits and vegetables : apples, peaches, pears, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, various lettuce, only naming a few, and there is so much more, but no tropical fruit obviously. I could probably find any kind of tropical fruit that is imported. But, do you really think the abundance of variety of fruits and vegetables here aren't ideal just because they aren't tropical? I am really curious about this lifestyle. I have a family and my husband and so moving to the tropics would just never happen, and also I would never want to leave my beautiful country. But, I am curious of your opinion on Canada's fruit and vegetables. And thank you for many great videos. I appreciate how peaceful they are.

      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +angelsongbaby Glad to hear you are exploring the lifestyle :) Strictly speaking - we are tropical animals, we thrive on tropical fruits. Of the foods you mentioned almost none of them are viable as a good fuel source simply because they are so low in calories (except maybe the peaches and pears). If you choose to stay in Canada, that will ALWAYS be a compromise in health, BUT as long as you are OK with that, then that's fine! What you CAN do is to eat some of the fruits you mentioned for breakfast, rely on a big banana meal for lunch to provide you with sufficient calories/sugar and then for dinner either more of the fruits you mentioned along with some vegetables, or some imported fruits like mangoes, persimmons or cherimoyas OR even cooked foods if you cannot find enough high quality fruit during winter etc.
      There is no doubt in MY mind that when I sit down to a meal of tropical fruits, it's a completely different experience both taste wise and satisfaction wise (and in fact nutrient wise) than when I sit down to a meal of apples and berries. That doesn't mean apples and berries aren't fantastic though! I love all fruits! But we have to realize that trying to be living on mostly fruit while living this far north is kind of like trying to be barefoot all year round in Canada/Norway...we're simply not adapted to that!
      You'll find your way though, don't even worry about what I just said - just do your own thing, explore the diet, experiment, learn and enjoy the journey!

    • @sweetnaturalliving

      +cristobal ramirez Fruit is the only food that is appealing to our senses and edible in it's raw natural state for us. We are biologically adapted to eating fruit, and almost nothing else. This is obvious if you think about it :D

    most people like to buy fruit unripe so it ripens at home and you can eat it in a few days it suits my life style ,

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diane Alexander Some fruits ripen after picking but others not. Melons and citrus for example does NOT ripen further after picking. And even the fruits that do, like bananas, can still be picked so early that they will not have the same nutritional composition and taste EVEN though they "ripen" at home. We need fruits to be ripened for as long as possible ON the tree!

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lilylibra To the degree that we do not have access to optimal food we suffer negative health consequences! If optimal health is desired, optimal food is ONE of the many elements needed. If we want it, we can go and get it! If we have other priorities causing us to live outside the ideal human habitat, then that is fine, we all make different compromises at different times for different reasons :) But for optimal health, we must have access to perfect food.

      ***** Yes bananas are available year round! Have a a big stash at home, allow them to ripen, plan ahead and make sure you've got ripe ones everyday! The perfect lunch! For breakfast it's nice to eat something juicy and for dinner I like to eat something juicy but savoury maybe together with an avocado!

    You don't know what you're looking for. Yes a lot of the fruit is poor quality and inedible in a lot of supermarkets. But there is also of good quality albeit expensive fruit available. You just have to shop in the right supermarkets and spend more money. You are being way to negative and pessimistic just because you think you are better than everyday people. But I have found a lot of great quality and very poor quality fruit in supermarkets. Just have to look a bit harder and spend more money.
