  • Bob Barth's fascination with cacti and succulents led him to universal explorations. As co-founder of the Austin Cactus and Succulent Society, he changed garden perceptions in his advocacy of these water-wise plants. His passion led to the global botanical community. In multiple greenhouses, he grows plants endangered by habitat loss. From tiny to large, discover some of their secrets of self-preservation and wildlife significance.

I have just recently became a fan of succulents and cacti, like only since a year ago. I am fascinated by how sturdy they are and they are literally the only plants that I can keep alive.....

One of the best videos on youtube! Question: I've always wondered, what type of machines do you use to generate heat and moisture? Can you explain the use of fans?

Omg. Can I come study with you? Or perhaps we can communicate and share our plants and species via computer and mail? So we can both expand and grow as Gardner’s? I’ve been a gardener with my father who was an immigrant from Czechoslovakia and since I was about 7 yrs old. Stating with vegetables I helped him in his garden. Then when we moved to CA at age 12 he expanded into fruit trees grapes, philodendrons bristle bushes and trees. Then I moved to San Diego and took care of the gardens at Pier Imports beautiful large garden center. Where we stocked a wide range of plants, I learned a great deal more about propagation etc, and I kept collecting more varieties as well. I collected many indoor type plants until
I bought my first home in a San Diego where I began leaning about out door plants ground covers etc etc. so moving around to many states with my engineer husband I learned about different climates and what was liked in all of them so my experience and knowledge is vast. I may not be a good speller and their scientific names I not always aware of but I know how to care for them or quickly learn because I know what to do to experiment with them so they can thrive. My indoor and outdoor species are now being purchased and my garden is growing rapidly again. I moved into my own home at 17 and starting collecting house plants. Then about 30 yrs ago I got into succulents and cacti. So I have a great deal of years in many forms of plants and have been collecting for years. I moved to Dallas about a year and 3 months ago. Being that we lived in costal CA /LA areas San Diego, most of my life plus Riverside county as well where it more desert like when we got back to CA from Alabama for 12 years. Then several other states coast to coast and I’d USA as well my experience is vast. I now in a Texas where we built our retirement home. I want to be educated about what I can expect in a Texas and what I need to do with each varying species, but I do collect many, most being talked about I have now or have had. I’d love to make an in-ground garden in my newly built homes garden but would like to be educated on how and which specific types are able to be taught to be outdoor or indoor I have both. I desire to expand my knowledge and how much I can expect from them all. Thank you. Your gardens are fabulous. Trudy Schwartz-Burrill

2 times a year the Austin cacti and succulent society have a sale at the Zilker botanical garden. Not a bad drive if you are in san Antonio. Bob (the guy in the video will have a booth). also get on his mailing list because he has a show and sale at his house 2 times a year.
