Talk to Al Jazeera - Thaksin: Let Thailand return to democracy

  • Despite living in self-imposed exile for the best part of ten years, Thailand's former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, continues to shape and influence Thai politics.
Elected to power in 2001, he was the first democratically elected prime minister to serve a full term in office, before being re-elected in a 2005 landslide victory.
A former telecommunications billionaire, the business tycoon turned politician drew his support from Thailand's rural poor, with his populist healthcare programmes and assistance for farmers schemes winning him great levels of support.
But loathed by the elite who saw him as a threat to the monarchy, Thaksin would face increasing allegations of corruption, with attention soon turning towards his tremendous wealth.
Coupled with accusations that he insulted the revered monarchy, protests would pave the way for the military to launch a bloodless coup in September 2006 while he was in the US.
Apart from a brief return to Thailand in 2008, Thaksin has based himself in self-imposed exile in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, ever since.
He has since been found guilty by Thai courts of abusing his power over a land deal whilst also being stripped of around $1.4 billion for concealing ownership of shares in a telecommunications company and for amending government policies to benefit it.
Thaksin told Al Jazeera that fears over his safety were stopping him from returning to the country.
"If I was there, who could guarantee my safety?," he said. When asked if his life was in danger Thaksin replied: "definitely," pausing before adding that while Prime Minister there were 14 attempts on his life including a 2006 foiled car-bomb assassination near his residence.
Thaksin's younger sister Yingluck Shinawatra would later become the country's first female prime minister in 2011, but when her government tried to push through a bill that would have granted amnesty to those found guilty of political crimes, protests gripped the country.
Yingluck was removed from office in a coup in May 2014 when a military government - headed by General Prayuth Chan-ocha came to power.
With the military continuing to run the country under the so-called National Council for Peace and Order, elections have repeatedly been delayed with rights groups accusing the junta of trying to solidify its hold on power.
"The draft constitution is [a] bad constitution, I don't even know if we can compare [it] to North Korea," Thaksin said.
In this episode of Talk to Al Jazeera, Thaksin Shinawatra, who has largely remained silent since the coup forced him from office, talks to Wayne Hay about the challenges facing the country and what lies ahead.

yes and during his time, thailand was almost free from drugs and sport was the 1st priority. now thailand's full of drugs and wild teen society. Every politician or military is corrupt in some ways, and would you rather like to chose the corrupt prime minister who brings wealth and progress to the country or a politician that takes your country back to the last decade ? there will never be a honest and innocent politician or prime minister, so just take the best option which could have a long term influencial to the country. with time, the majority of the people of thailand will be well educated enough to realize what's wrong and what's right and until then they still can vote for a new president or prime minister.

I am from university educated family. We respect democracy from poor and rich people. He was elected as the most popular party. Other upper midle class people have not agreed with him and always have looked down on poor thai in Northeastern. It has been about root of Thai culture they respect people from hight to low class that you were born. They dont respect our voice even we are educated. Back then 200 years ago from map northern and northeastern parts,we were not Siam(Thailand) yet. Thai upper middle class always think we are low class who are only stupid and poor. This problem is from our root of culture. Thai has 4 dialects. Northeastern and Northern we were from Lao . We got our language before we speak Thai. Thaksin also got his own language. Thai center part (siam) have never truely accepted us because we are lower class. That is true by now. The Janta and Hight class including military dictatorship who were from upper middle class and Hight or royal decent still dont want low class get a good education because one day Highclass will be changed their position to be equal as a famer,a poor ,a middle class. They never literally accept or decrease there good quality of lofe and position.

While I am NO fan of Thaksin (corrupt- like most politicians in Thailand it seems-, he exacerbated the crisis in the South with the Muslims, the mass murder of the 'War on Drugs,' etc) he was the first ever prime minister to win an all out majority in 2005, and the first ever leader to implement policies aimed directly at helping the poor (e.g. universal healthcare, loans to villages, increasing access to upper secondary education, etc). Ever since the coup in 2006 with the ousting of Thaksin, and the subsequent coup in 2014 ousting his sister, Thailand is now in a dire situation and democracy has been set back many years! Thailand under the current junta is no solution for my dearly loved country...

I wish we could ignore all the current political factions (Democrats, Pheu Thai, et al.) and have a new party enter the fray (with no big interests in either the military, business, Thaksin, etc). There's too many politicians in Thailand who have vested concerns/ biases. Thailand deserves a party who is free of corruption and nepotism, a party who only wants to bring peace and prosperity to ALL Thais. I think, sadly, this can only be a dream:-(

Imagine supporting the juntra for 500 baht a month instead of 30 baht healthcare. Thailand and it's people are truly hopeless and I'm saying this as a Thai.

He should have rubbed elbows with and greased the current powers instead of creating a party and coming off as a threat. If he did serious time in the military, that would have helped also. Colonization comes in various forms

Thai people can now consider themselves as Burmese living in a country controlled by a military dictatorship, and to me the Burmese are like Thais used to be living in a democracy, I remember how proud Thai people were when they spoke of being Thai and living in a democracy and how they felt sad about the Burmese living under a military junta, ha, ha, now it has changed Thailand is now a dictatorship, well done Thailand or should I say old Myanmar your all now Burmese.

My Thai family reported the same. Thais have became more united especially after the passing of the King Rama IX. Most red shirts have been waken up and now they realize they had been used by the Shin family and its associated politicians. The Shin family and crooked politicians have become so rich but the poor still stay poor. They cheated the poor farmers, and more than 2 dozens of the farmers decided to take their own lives due to the Shin's Rice Subsidy scheme.

Return do democracy? Thailand has always been a monarchy. People need to realize that democracy isn't for everyone. We Americans are so arrogant..just because democracy works for us doesn't mean it will work for everybody. Look at the middle east,it has always had a strong centralized governments..and that seems to work for them. Look at Afghanistan...democracy won't work in areas that have traditionally had strong central governments. Thailand has been a monarchy since 1283. People need to mind their own business and let the Thai people decide.
