'To be clear, I won the election': Thai opposition leader Pita Limjaroenrat speaks to FRANCE 24

  • Pita Limjaroenrat, the former leader of the Move Forward Party, won the most votes in Thailand’s 2023 general election but was blocked from becoming prime minister - and his party excluded from the governing coalition - over calls to reform Thailand’s strict lèse-majesté laws, which prohibit criticism of the royal family. Limjaroenrat tells FRANCE 24 his party merely wants to find a balance between respecting royalty and freedom of speech in Thailand, which has some of the strictest royal insult laws in the world.

Pita has lead his party to victory free and clear without paying people to vote for him. The victory was clean and straightforward, which no other political party in Thailand has done before.
Pita and his party continue to work hard to ensure that the Thai people receive all benefits they deserve.
If Pita gets a chance to be the prime Minister of Thailand, we believe from what we have seen he and his party’s work that he will greatly improve the system and lead Thailand to world recognition. There will be less corruption, the police and military will have better benefits and treatment, the older generation will be taken good care of. The young generation will have better opportunities and good future. The people of Thailand will have a justice system that is fair to all, not just the rich. Currently the rich and powerful can do no wrong and jail is only the poor. The environment will be protected and maintained. There will be a great system to ensure garbage and dangerous chemicals will be properly disposed of, without harming the environment and the lives of the people.
Currently, Pita is facing the old powerful establishments who are trying to block him from becoming government because the establishments are afraid that they would not be able to control the people and their corruption will be stopped.
It has been more than twenty years that the establishments prevented and dissolved any party or people who tried to lead Thailand to a true democracy.

They disrespected the people's voices. It won't be a problem if Thailand is admitted that it's a totalitarian state. But since Thailand claimed to be "Democratic-monarchy", the oppression to people's voices raised the constitutional problem.

The voice of the people is reflected through the number of MPs who vote to choose the Prime Minister. which Mr. Pitha is not in the majority. Therefore he did not become Prime Minister. It's that simple.

In 1636, the founding fathers of Harvard University chose Veritas (truth in Latin) as the motto which reflects the university's commitment to the pursuit of truth and knowledge as the ultimate goal of education. Based on this 388 yrs old motto, with hundreds of thousand students graduated, it appears that some graduates failed to remember the school’s motto. One of them is Pita. Since becoming Thailand politician, he has been founded to publicly make numerous falsehoods/false claims. In fact, he's very good at making rhetoric based on a piece of factual data out of the whole context and spins it to fit his aims of stirring up troubles for the country, and discrediting others (Thailand and former ruling cabinet led by Gen Prayuth in particular).

It's absolutely a distortion of facts. The facts are his party received more votes than other parties but the total votes were only about 30% of the total voters who went to the poll to cast their votes nation wide. He, his party & everyone/every party knew that based on the 30% votes his party won, his party got only about 151 MPs out of the 500 total MPs plus 250 Senators, which was not enough to win the right to be the ruling government outright. Just like many democratic countries around the world & even in Europe, his party was given the right first to form a coalition government which they tried by courting the Phue Thai party that won about 140 MP seats. But the combined total was still below half of 750 - so, they lobbied hard for the 250 senators to vote for them. However, they failed so badly to win a sizable vote from the senators because these senators (seasoned professionals from all specialized fields with proven success in their long career who are more mature & not belonging to any political party) deemed that Pita & his party did not have all the qualifications required to be the Prime Minister and the party to be the gov't for the nation.

You won 151 seats, did not mean you won to be PM unless you won 500 seats. Senetors had been selected from people and they are eligible to choose PM who will not harm the nation and put any effort to unite people. This party won votes because their fantasy policy but they could not make it in reality. I did not agree to have him as PM and if you recalled from his history he had not done any good to the country yet.

If only those in power would not be blinded by all their overly privileges and can think longer than their own assets and wealths, they may see how their acts have caused an unfunctional democracy and a polarized society.
Despite their wording of their act as decomposing the polarization, their acts and the results proved the opposite. Could the people still hope for someone wise enough in today’s government to be able to see the root of the problem? Eventually accept it and take an action about it as well? 🫠
