Melothria pendula or Creeping Cucumber

  • Here is a look at the Melothria pendula or Creeping Cucumber. It grows very similar to a Cucamelon (Mexican Sour Gherkin, Mouse Melon or Sandita). However, it comes from the Southeastern area of the United States and turns dark when ripe. Although I have been told that they do not taste as good when they turn dark, I have not tried them out to determine that. As the plant grows, it prefers to creep along the ground. If the tendrils come contact with moist soil at plant internodes (or knots) then they will likely root. I hope you enjoy this little video!

Hi there. I just found your channel through your etsy. I am a long time fan of the cucurbitaceae family. My favorites are gourds and luffas, but I also love pumpkins, melons and cucumbers. I'm in Florida and only have had luck with hard shelled gourds Lagenaria spp and luffas. I am familiar with this cute cucumber as it is native here. I managed to get a hold of seeds one year but for some reason it didn't grow so well in my yard. I will have to try again. I like them as ornamentals because everything's so tiny about them. But I've heard not to eat the black ones as they are major laxatives. Green ones are safe. Anyway of the other videos you have I have enjoyed them. And I really like that you stay behind the camera so we can see what you're talking about.

Thank you for your comment. In addition to our native creeping cucumber, there are a lot of cucumber varieties that perform very well in Florida, including the bushy Carosello varieties.

@@CucumberShop I'll have to look those up. With our high humidity, disease and bugs it's very hard to grow cucumbers here without a greenhouse. Melonworms are one of the worst enemies. It is the caterpillar of a small white and brown moth.
