  • The outbreak of brazen smash-and-grab robberies and shoplifting is showing no signs of stopping, but some stores are taking extreme measures to stop would-be thieves in their tracks, including Home Depot. Spokesperson Christina Cornell gave Inside Edition an exclusive look at the company's latest crime-fighting technology, including a shopping cart with wheels that lock if you don't pay and bluetooth-activated items.

I used to work in the front lobby of a large office building. On one end of our property was a bus stop. About two blocks in the other direction was a Walmart. I regularly saw people push Walmart carts to the bus stop and leave them there, either on the sidewalk or in the ditch. It disgusted me because I knew that some carts were probably later stolen, and the Walmart had to send someone to gather the others. Either way it cost money. It was also theft, and these people apparently had no problem with that. They probably would have a meltdown if wheel locks were implemented.

My biggest concern for this is the activation of tools. Sounds like if there’s an error in the software and decides to lock up what would the average consumer do, contact support and they’ll tell them your tool didn’t work because it’s not activated it might be stolen. How’s a consumer supposed to prove besides a receipt? Feel like everything we own one day is going to be licensed to some higher authority(company) and they will decide whether the thing I bought will work or not.

That's my concern as well. It has to be able to be deactivated because otherwise products cannot be returned and resold, so what happens when these tools start to go bad and deactivate themselves?
The locks probably don't have an active power supply so it's probably something comparable to an NFC tag meaning that it will just respond to the appropriate device meaning that anyone with that device could lock or unlock the tools so of course the bad guys will get them eventually. And can you imagine the harm if someone used a signal amplifier to remote disable all the power tools in a neighborhood or a work site?

I cannot even begin to fathom to take even a 11 mm wrench and socket 1/4 or 3/8 drive. To see the room with millions of dollars of stolen tools is crazy.

That just stop them from taking the cart from the store not the merchandise, it may slow them down but they can still grab and run and some of them have their own scanners to deactivate and activate stuff 🤷🏽‍♀️

Bluetooth activation-locking isn’t even a bandaid solution. This is crazy. Beef up store security, don’t activation lock merchandise.
