- Organized retail crime cost retailers nearly $778,000 per $1 billion in sales in 2018, an all-time high, according to a National Retail Federation survey. In the past three quarters, Home Depot reported that an increase in "shrink" hurt its financial results. Retail shrinkage includes organized retail crime. Home Depot says if shrink gets too high, it may have to pass costs off to consumers. CNBC's Courtney Reagan reports.

As a former Home Depot employee I once witnessed a guy run out of the store with some stuff. I took a note of his car and plate number. I reported it to the manager on duty and she did NOTHING about it. Her reason was she said that they didn't want to accuse anybody. Fricking bs.

I once chased a guy out of Target, took a picture of his car and gave it to the manager. A week later the same guy was at a restaurant. They never did anything. And I didn't even work there.

Noticed how he said the cost would be passed to the consumer. Maybe you should hire more employees. More security. Because your prices are too high to begin with. People can and will turn against higher prices. Then that will be your down fall. This day and age retail greed has people realizing what they can live with and what they can do without.
Why should businesses have to fork the unnecessary cost just to do their normal business. The cost of operation will go up either way. Therefore, prices will too.

I hate self checkout. I went to a Walmart marketplace store when I don't usually go there and was surprised to find out that they don't have any cashiers after 8PM. They seemed annoyed that I went to the customer service counter to buy my stuff. I have health problems that make it hard for me to be on my feet and I just wanted to buy my stuff as quickly as possible. Walmart makes an insane amount of money and they can't even afford to hire cashiers? I won't steal even though I'm homeless, but I have no sympathy for them if other people take advantage of them being too cheap to hire cashiers.
I believe this to be true everywhere.. Especially Walmart. If you hired cashiers then it would cut theft down by prob 70%
@@tj7179 When the Walmart grocery store was open 24/7, I used to go in the middle of the night and I'd walk around looking for someone to ring me up and then just leave what I wanted to buy at the register and then leave. I'm sure they must have have many people just walk out without paying.
The logic is that the loss is less than the total cost of employees. Now that losses are increasing the math just doesn't pan out any longer. Combine that with basic greed. That small percentage used to be acceptable. In order to keep margin GROWTH, they have trimmed all the labor they could, volume is stagnant, the easiest target left is reduce loss. Profits were a certain percentage, if that stays the same they're still making money. They just aren't making MORE.

Pay attention to his last statement. He said they've been good about not raising prices due to shrink. That doesn't account for a myriad of other reasons they raise prices, including "Just because we can".
This was a the same justification Sears used before they shut down! They blamed stolen merchandise as the downfall! I didn’t really agree with that!
The market drives the price. If it's too high . no one will buy. If there are competitors, the price goes down as well. Capitalism- it's a good thing.

@@bopeep86 Amazon was really the ultimate reason why Sears closed. Stolen merchandise was the number two reason. In the end, I can only go by the earnings and media reports. Sears was everywhere! The appliances were the cheapest. I’m pretty sure most of the loss occurred in areas where theft occurs often. I miss Sears though!
You have to take this with a grain of salt. These stories are always exaggerated by everyone involved. HD has been locking up portable power tools behind metal gates; how are they being stolen?
Their large stores were built when they employed large numbers of helpful employees. Now you’re lucky if you can find an employee 5 aisles away!
Of course theft is going to increase when there are no employees around!
Both Home Depot and Lowes are terribly run companies. The store managers hide from the customers and the employees go out of their way to avoid being helpful. I hate going in to either one and I blame corporate management.
this is only half the story, as expected with NBC reporting. home depot already got an insurance check on the theft. the cops now stole it from the thief. you think they will give it back to home depot or whatever store? hilariously no. the cops keep it and auction it off and pocket the money. they likely let the thief go because its likely a crime ring and racketeering job and all are in on it.

I’m in law enforcement and I can tell you it’s a real problem. The only thing when we get their property back they never want to prosecute. They will also not call the police until the thieves have already let the store even if they have been watching them conceal items.
Most likely an attempt to prevent cops from shooting legitimate customers.
@Prince Wojak then don’t call at all. If they don’t have the stolen merchandise on them then it’s been my experience the prosecution doesn’t want to take the case.

Imagine if the store negotiated in advance with law enforcement about how to notify them when they see a likely impending shoplifting, so that officers could already be on their way or present outside when the thief exits the building. Would that work, in your opinion?
Or would that be treated by LE as a nuisance, since at the time of the first call no actual crime has yet occurred, and some shoplifters might abort their theft if the police arrival was noticed (by them or an associate outside)? Too many fruitless calls - so wait until the crime is verified before calling.
There's really no law against concealing merchandise. Only once you attempt to walk out the doors without paying for it is a crime. Anyone can walk around a store stuffing drills down their pants all they want to but if they take it back out and pay for it no crime committed

Also if you can prove someone’s intent to commit the crime then they can also be arrested. Example, all of these smash and grabs on the news. However, what you said isn’t untrue.

That’s a legitimate question. Many businesses just count it as an operating expense. Now it’s an organized large operation and is too much of a business cost to absorb by just reducing profit.
Depending on what State this CRIME is committed. In Connecticut store security can use what ever means necessary to STOP the theft and get their merchandise back
Wrong answer, leftist clown. In none of the fifty states do rent-a-cops (aka loss prevention, security, whatever their exact title) have the right to lay hands on you or search your possessions. See the 4th amendment if you believe otherwise. And yes, contrary to popular belief, the 4th amendment _does_ in fact apply to places of public accommodation as well since the right to be secure in your own person is a NATURAL right which cannot be taken away except through due process.
So no, in CT, store security cannot use "whatever means necessary" to stop the theft. They're free to try, but they'll either get charged with battery or attacked back in self-defense. And if you think for even a _second_ that the suspected shoplifter will be charged with robbery due to choosing to defend him (or herself), think again.
The woman who was strong-armed by "undercover" (aka plain clothes) loss prevention personnel at an Ikea store in St. Louis ended up having all charges dropped simply because she was grabbed by one of the rent-a-cops. So while true that responding officers and the D.A.'s Office often don't care enough to investigate such matters, there are times when they listen to both sides of the story.

Having worked at a Home Depot for almost 3 years, it was always weird seeing how much of the shrinkage was from inside jobs🤷♂️
When I work in retail that was one of the main issues. The employees are ripping off the business more than anyone. They get their friends to come in, shoplift, and split the money

employees can help you with an inside job and not even know it. when you order something online usually they keep it in a cart by the back door somewhere. not that I would do it, but a person could easily add all kinds of stuff to said cart. when you pick up your online order they call back and have someone bring you your cart they dont bother to check it over again because it was already loaded by an employee so they unknowingly shoplift for you. if your worried about cameras when loading cart wear a mask and a hat different color shirt they cant prove its you and you didn't actually have it in your possession and walking out the store.

Said they seen me on camera sticking a Circular Saw blade in my jacket...I laughed thinking they were joking, but then they said they will call the police if I didn't show them my waistband.....they didn't even apologize after I showed them .....shop LOWES ever since.

We are going to let insurance handle it and just tell the customers that the $800k shrinkage out of our billion dollar profit must be passed onto them by permanently raising prices on everything even though we could easily make that back in a day.

I talked to the HD lumber manager and he says they are also paying a lot more for the product. They have contracts with suppliers and the prices fluctuate. I also talked with a bid that runs a hardware store and lumber yard, he told me the same thing. He said “ it’s not me, it’s the suppliers”.

I'm retired corrections and now work at Lowes. Recent policy has been to "stay out of the way" when these criminals make their way out of our stores with merchandise. Management thinks this policy is "safe," and yet have no idea how criminals view this with contempt.
Outside stores there are yellow surveillance machines that can usually just do the job for u….only time they care is if the car is stolen and that leads to bigger arrest I guess everyone understands these are just large company stores n it doesn’t affect the employees or managers so they don’t care…either way there run doesn’t last long either there a super intelligent smart career criminal or usually what it is there just a person addicted to drugs that will either go to jail or die soon… n usually n back then if u would get them in trouble if it isn’t over 1000$ u can’t really do anything they will just be banned from ur store… n even that is a risk cuz if they run they usually do that because they have warrants and those people are already lossed causes so just let em be n they will just use drugs until there death…
The professional shoplifters know that major retailers now have a hands-off policy toward shoplifters. Employees can be fired for making any attempt to physically stop shoplifting.

I live in two states, one of my homes is just outside NYC and one is in a rural area of Massachusetts. Its almost like a different country. The rural store is a joy the NY store not so much.
My niece was working at a Home Depot where they put in charge of loss prevention. She found out contractors were taking tools out the back rollup door and then around the building to their construction vehicle. When she told management what she had discovered in her investigation, they did nothing and told her to back off. Was the store management getting a kickback?
She quit them and now has a wonderful architect job with a major power provider company.

Walmart, Target and the rest...they expect law enforcement to handle it. Hire your own security, equip them with the proper tools and training and let them do their job. They are too scared of lawsuits.

From what I hear Home depot better keep a better eye on their employees including their loss prevention security employees. They take it before it hits the show room.
I’ve noticed tool prices are climbing big time. The 12-inch Makita glide miter saw I was looking at a short time ago went from $899.00 to over a thousand now. The Dewalt table saw on a collapsible stand went from $589.00 to $649.00. So which is it, the retailers? The manufacturers or a combination of both? It’s like those little refrigerators in your hotel room, lower the freaking prices and I’ll buy it!

Home Depot needs more employees to start, it is like shopping in a ghost town. Check receipts at the doors.
Those places are so huge that you need to bring a Sherpa with you to bring provisions. They really do need to have employees to help you find stuff if you're not like a construction worker or something who is used to finding their way around the store.

Checking receipts at the door is complicated now that you have people refusing to show receipts at the door even when they have one and exiting the store. There are people doing this while recording and placing on TH-cam. Many are so called "auditors" stating they are standing up for their rights.
How can someone show a receipt if they choose the email option?
Besides once I pay for the item, no one touches it.
At the end the police station sells are goods at a auction so the crime continues if the police station collects the money !!

@SEC Securities and Exchange Commission I used to work for a store and if i remember correctly when i person is catch steeling the person is arrested and next day released but the merchandise gets thrown away !! anyway your still collecting money for stolen property and the tax is just a man made way to collect money from working people so politicians can sit at home if the police station collects the money $$ so the tax shod be adjusted for home owners since many home owners pay tax for police stations you can not collect money + homeowners tax at the same % so what happens to the money the police station will collect is it pocketed or its it used to adjust the % so home owners can pay less tax since the police stolen lets say made 100K in stolen property or is the money donated and the is proof its bin donated to a hospital even if its donated to schools the tax needs to be adjusted again for homeowners !
Let me explain the problem I saw with Home Depot. They rotate managers...a lot. What they don't do is inventory on his way in. After a year they inventory and he is responsible for the loss he walked into...then he's transferred. You could have literally ZERO loss and when they do inventory you're responsible for the stuff that was supposed to be there but wasn't when you started.
$777,877 out of every BILLION dollars sounds way worse than less than 8 CENTS out of every dollar. It's a good thing they're not promoting sensationalism!

I bought a Milwaukee 12v battery that was in a large clear security box. I asked THREE HD associates to remove the box but got waved off, so I just took the whole box home and disassembled it at home. The box had an electronic security device, and the item inside had an RFID tag. Nobody stopped me leaving the store with the whole thing. And now, due to my having to disassemble it, I know how their security box actually works and could easily be defeated- not that I would, but not everybody is honest.
Too expensive and too time consuming, better to just write it off as a loss.

remember a store called Service Merchandice? everything in the store was a bolted down or non working or demo unit display item. you had to pay for your item then wait for it to come out of the back warehouse.
I don’t remember that store or they didn’t have one where I lived. However I know circuit city moved to a similar model for higher priced items. CDs, movies, cases and small priced items stay on the floor. Mid value were in locked cabinets on the showroom floor and higher priced items were rang up/paid for and the item would come out at customer service from the back warehouse. They had working demos that were secured down or behind display cases. The retail industry went to a customer needs to touch it to but it model and self service as ways to cut down cost, but this may actually be costing them more.
In Canada there was a retailer called Consumers Distributing with the same concept. They had a catolog u look thru then filled out a card with what u wanted. Hand it to the cashier and it would be passed to a "picker" who would go into the secured warehouse and 5 mins later u had ur goods. Sadly they closed but were in business for 40+ yrs.

Back when I was in retail in the 80's and 90's, you'd be surprised what deterrent effect punching a shoplifter in the face had. We used to beat their asses, and they didn't come back.

Merchandise display locks can be circumvented with bolt cutters, hammers, cutting power tools, and ramset guns, and there are organized retail criminals that are smart enough to do that. To curtail organized retail crime, incorporate choke points and making the entrance doors entrance only unless there is an emergency as well as adding Public views monitors at every self checkout, the entrances, exits, and pro pickup zones. Also we need state laws all across the United States that will make retail boosting an automatic felony.

I went into home depot to buy a $330. Toro lawn mower a few years ago....they said they had 5 in stock....everyone , I had 3 associates and managers looking for the mowers they had in stock...and they couldn't find the specific Toro mower for me to buy. All of them were gone.
Another time @ home depot i was in the checkout line and i saw a man push a cart thru the door and the alarm bells went off and then he rushed and ran to his truck. The associate i was with call security...but it was too late....guy was long gone.
All this occurred in Lancaster, Texas...i hope they have the issues resolved. I never could understand why someone can't just buy one lawn mower...and pass the receipt to their friend...who goes gets another mower for free...and then while exiting passes the receipt to another who goes gets another free mower and so on...until the mowers are all gone in 1 hour.
Home Depot needs to keep an eye on people...and there should be a bar code on the receipts so they are used only once exiting.

Those are the wrong numbers to compare. Of that $1,000 you're looking at, most is cost of goods. How much was profit (needed to pay for the wages, the building, property tax, A/C and other utilities)?

I worked at home depot a long time ago, the problem I saw is with the store managers stealing large items from them! marking them down as damaged witch you have to throw them in the trash but they go to the manager's friends and family.

This has been going on for decades. I worked as a kid for a grocery store on the Baltimore city line back in the 90's. Shoplifters would literally mad rush the store and clear the shelves of many things. I remember batteries and baby formula being a huge target. They came in numbers and security couldn't stop them all. The products ended up on unfortunately on small retailers shelves in the city. I imagined they either directed them or paid peanuts.
Maybe in your area but there’s MANY decent areas where this normally doesn’t happen.
Let me guess, shop lifting got bad when they installed the self checkouts. Why not pay for more cashiers?!! There are no self checkouts at Lowes and it would be pretty difficult to walk out of things from that store. The lanes are close tight and blocked if not in use.

That is complicated by the fact now you have many people creating a situation by walking past the receipt checkers at stores and refusing to show their receipts. Some of them do this while recording and place the interaction on TH-cam. Many of the recorded & posted incidents occurs at Walmart.
The difference is at Costco you need a membership to even get in the door.

I'm a General contractor in California and I won't spend a dime in Home depot any more as they burned me and now they loose a minimum of $1,500.00 per month from just me not to mention all the people I know who know me and know that I'm honest and there are some major problems with management and special orders from outside vendors.
It's very sad I used to love the establishment, they burned me and would not take responsibility take careful a very good ex client.

I go to lowes and when I made the change I noticed that several of the employees had also made the switch from HD and were now working in the lowes that I frequent and they were the same very friendly and efficient folks that I appreciate.
