Portland (proper) is only around 70,000, but it has a "town" feel to it. Portland is a scenic city, lots to do, but also a laid back feel for living in an urban area, which is unique to most cities.

The Portland metro has about 500k, which makes it over twice as large as the next largest metro (Bangor)
Combined they make up more than half the entire population, so if you live in Maine there is a 50% chance you live on Bangor or portland
