Pretty sure it's because when the wind is blowing just right, you get the smell of the Westbrook Paper Mill. It has a smell kind of like boiled cabbage. There is a "Who Farted" kids' book series so maybe it's about that, but I went to college down the road in Windham and when we smelled the paper mill, we'd often ask who farted.
Its because there used to be a baked bean factory just north of Portland (you can see it if you head north towards Falmouth on hwy 295 on the north side of the old bridge). It recently shut down and the building was donated to SMCC to study marine science.
We're thinking about doing a fall road trip through NE and ending somewhere in Maine. I've been around the north area in the fall for football games. It's definitely something magical
I'm a huge Kara and Nate fan, but ya'll just won me over with that Nathan Drake and Tomb Raider reference (and also the great video about Maine lol). I'll be catching up on vids and staying tuned!
Loved Portland! We ate at the same donut shop and High Roller and loved them both! Next time we’ll check out your other suggestions especially the lobstering boat. Great job!
hi! i love this channel, my family owns a summer house 30 miles south of there in old orchard and i summer there every year. i’ve been to nearly all the places you went to there in portland. it’s so beautiful! the lobster boat experience is super fun, keep up the good work.❤
Yay you explored Portland! Such a fun place to go on a beautiful summer day, or weekend. I loved going out on a lobster boat and learning all about lobstering. Excellent exploration!
U can get good lobster rolls in Portland but go up the coast more, the mid coast area you'll get better lobster rolls. Places like portland they try to hard, a good lobster roll is either lobster mixed with a little mayo and stuffed in a sweet roll or just plain lobster in a roll with butter dripped all over it. Dont go to Red's lobster in wiscasset, its a rip off. Hope u enjoy ur visit
Food note: I’ve never been to Maine, but lobster should never be chewy, if it’s chewy they overcooked it. Lobster should always be very very tender and almost falling apart! I think you have just been unlucky with that or been to places that didn’t cook it properly. I live in Pennsylvania my lobster has only come from the grocery store or restaurants in Pennsylvania or New Jersey and it’s never been chewy. (Although obviously it’s going to be better in Maine) 😊
Former San Franciscan here. If you ever go back, and want to drop a few more dollars, Fore St. restaurant is the closest thing I have found on the east coast. Just fresh, beautifully prepared food, mostly local. And the bread comes from The Standard Baking Co. which is open to the public. Also best bakery on the East Coast. Maybe because I'm happily tranplanted in Boston, I am looking for the SF vibe and flavors.
I may be the only one who doesn't love Holy Donut donuts. They feel like they've sat in the fryer too long, soaking up oil. They're just too heavy. It's NOT because they're potato donuts, since my family makes donuts with potato in the dough that are still light, fluffy, yeast-raised donuts. I prefer Frosty's donuts to Holy Donut.
For a place where lobster is in abundance you would think that a hoagie would be much cheaper. I could see $20 but $30 for a cold lobster sandwich seems pretty excessive but then again it is a food truck and food trucks are always way more expensive than a restaurant.
You've got to come farther north and avoid the tourist places. Along the coastline they're always going to be more expensive. There's an ice cream shop in my rural hometown that sells a large lobster roll, soda, chips, and sundae for $30. Another stand sells them for $20. Most of us just go to the grocery store or find a local lobsterman who sells them, boil and then pick out the meat, and make our own sandwiches.
So funny, I went to Portland back in 2017 and went to almost all the same places. but my trip was in February and I went to Portland Head Light in the middle of a literal blizzard 😂
@@faredrop Nope.... didn't go through lol. Check out "Primo" and "In Good Company" in Rockland, "Larson's Lunchbox" in Damariscotta, and "Richard's" and "Big Top Delicatessen" in Brunswick.
All that Lobster! Sometimes you gotta save a bit in one area of the trip so you can splurge later! All about the priorities. Yum. How was the cost of your hotel?
Ok, I just saw/heard something I have to raise a stink over. Connecticut style is NOT real! A hot lobster roll is still a Maine lobster roll, no Connecticut involved here. Don't get me wrong, I love CT....but I am not a fan of those who think hot is Connecticut style. It's NOT. Thank you for listening and congrats on ordering at least 2 Eventide Brown Butter Lobstah Rolls....I might have had to say something there. Me? It's not easy stuffing all you did in two days. BTW....Two Lights would have been a great choice too, their Lobstah is wicked good! I haven't tried Bite into Maine yet....I will soon! @@faredrop You can take the boy out of New England....but you can't make him accept anything other than Maine lobstah!! Been in Texas most of the last 30 years.
Trust, we're thinking the same thing. Sometimes you gotta splurge. It was REALLY good though. And I'm sure there were spots way cheaper if we tried looking, but we went with what was recommended to us.
Love the place. It's beautiful, but no! 🤣 Granted (and I say this so they don't come for us in the comments) we probably could have been a lot more frugal with our spending, but Maine is known for lobsters and lobster rolls so we wanted to find good ones.
Who the hell recommends eventide to everyone? It’s touristy it’s overly bougie and expensive! The foods good but not worth the money! I mean that’s most of Portland… the city has kind of gotten ruined as of late… everything has gotten overpriced! Btw I live in Maine near Portland I just never go there because it’s almost unbearable compared to what it used to be when it was more of a locals place
