      IPS Screen on DS Phat
      OLED/AMOLED screens on retro emulation consoles
      5ghz Wifi compatible on Android handhelds to play Xcloud.

    Nice to see emulation devices approach big name console quality ( or surpass, the all metal construction is awesome). But me personally id rather just use an ODE or Everdrive. I see the RG351MP at 150 usd is tempting, but at the same time a used Vita at the same price is also a great choice, they just have different strengths and weaknesses.

      Been mostly using the community made 351elec firmware for the device as it's a nice upgrade over the base firmware while being very easy to use

      Playing with my own RG351MP has actually inspired me to install the homebrew mod on an old Wii with a dead disk drive, it still has the Gamecube ports and everything, and with the Homebrew mod installed it can now run games from USB or SD.
      I'm not crazy enough to try the "portable Wii mod" but it's still nice to have the Wii itself to play stuff like the Metroid Prime Trilogy, especially given it's bizzar motion controls are hard to imitate even to spite my attempts with Dolphin Emulation on my laptop and a Xbox controller, might try again once I can get my Steamdeck since those touch pads could be better suited.
      Still, being playing my RG351MP to death with old Metroid and other retro games as well as AM2R, The Marathon Trilogy, and so on, it's a perfect little take-anywhere handheld, it only has to fight with my 3DS occasionally if I feel like Metroid Prime Hunters or Metroid Samus Returns
      .....and yeah, I seem to have a Metroid obsession lately, I blame this device and Metroid Dread

    • @JamesCreamerIII
      @JamesCreamerIII 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The performance of N64 games has less to do with the chipset and more to do with the core being used for emulation. You’ve really got to do your homework and find the right core and settings for certain games to run well. Guarantee this has nothing to do with the chipset. My Retroid Pocket 2 runs my N64 games just fine on MupeN64 when I find the right settings. What that does mean is that if you want to play N64 games on ANY handheld, not just this one, you’ve got some tweaking and testing to do.

    I own an RG280M and it's amazing (a bit smaller than yours tho). There's a discord called Retro Game Handhelds with a bunch of developers making custom firmwares for these consoles, often with way better performance. The nice thing about these is that you can keep your current firmware on one microSD and test out another custom firmware on a 2nd microSD.

  • @sethsez
    @sethsez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I personally think that if you're looking for PS1 and below, this is just about the pinnacle of what you could want. The construction is incredibly solid, the custom firmwares (once they become available for this particular revision) are a wonderful balance of aesthetically pleasing, user friendly and decently customizable, the screen is fantastic, the size is actually pocketable, and the emulation for those systems is rock-solid.
    Yes, there are newer systems coming out that are going to be more powerful and can handle Dreamcast, N64 and PSP much better, and I look forward to those! But they're also going to be less pocket-friendly and will run on Android, which although a great OS isn't quite as snappy to navigate with standard controls. We're moving from Game Boy to Game Gear, in other words, and I feel like it's worth considering what's being lost in the transition as much as recognizing what's being gained.
    So yeah, bring on the Odin and the RG552 and whatever else is on the horizon, but I'm still glad this exists and I plan on getting one as a final upgrade to my RG350M and RG351V (since I love the hardware of the former and the software of the latter, this is basically the perfect fit for me).

    At first glance, graphical issues on those N64 games are probably how the Mupen core is set. I see this device uses Retroarch. I know products like these aren't meant for what they call hardcore gamers, but I missed simple tests or just mentions about input lag and even if run-ahead is feasible, which probably isn't. This is mind-blowing to me, I still have a 2013 Sony Xperia SP, running Android 6.0.1, it has a dual core 1.7ghz CPU and 800mb~ RAM, I can play PS1, N64 and Dreamcast games on it far better than devices like this. I have no visual glitches on N64 games, no crackling audio, using Mupen64EZ or something like that, Reicast doesn't run full speed all the time, but it's really playable. For PS1, I can use the enhanced resolution in PCSX-R Reloaded core, which doubles the original resolution and can even set run-ahead to 2 for Genesis games, without crackling audio.
    I'm not saying this to brag about my device, I just would like to understand how an old smarphone like mine seems to be able to handle emulators better than dedicated devices like these. I can even output it to my TV since it is OTG enabled and play with a PS4 gamepad via bluetooth.

    I gotta agree with you, the RK3326 is just unappealing at this point. These never ending revisions are just meh. Anbernic needs to start putting in upgraded chips into these things. They've been pumping out these same things for what feels like years with only super minor updates to it. If you own any version it's pretty much not worth buying any upgraded version at this point. • @SCorpG22
      @SCorpG22 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zerosama5743 I've made several. The issue is that with the Gameboy Color, the size of lipo you can fit is limited. The IPS will draw quite a bit depending on screen brightness settings and an IPS is only really worth it if you crank the brightness up. Anything additional, especially an amp is drawing more power and when you factor in the size of the (newish) Q5 IPS which requires 15% more power, it just shortens the battery life considerably. I suppose if you're doing it for doing's sake, it's a neat little project and you'll learn a few things, but if it's for conventional reasons, you're going to be constantly recharging the thing. The best LED mod I've seen replicated the original DMG artwork from the original box with blue LEDs making it look like something from Tron.

    When I got my 351M it was hit or miss with 64 bit games until I changed the firmware and picked my own emulators. I'm sure the 351 MP will have the same options or better very soon, considering it has a better chipset. It will run those games just not straight out of the box which is unfortunate. With all that said the device is truly a marvel considering how far devices like this have come and we are lucky to have them and developers that are working for free on these devices. We could just keep using our hacked PSP's and DS but this option is much simpler.

    • @sethsez
      @sethsez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The RK2020 is definitely an amazing value, but the main difference between it and Anbernic's devices (even the plastic ones) is the general build quality and feel of the buttons. It's like the difference between a first party controller and one of those cheap bargain-bin third party ones... the buttons certainly FUNCTION, but they don't feel nearly as satisfying, and the plastic has more of a toy-like quality to it. Anbernic's stuff feels like Nintendo hardware at its best... whether that's worth the rather extreme price difference is up to you, but I'm glad both options are available so everyone can choose based on their own preferences and budgets.

    I'm so mixed on this. I really want a 4:3 ratio handheld for the older games, particularly 16 bit and PS1, but it would also have been really nice to have good N64 and Dreamcast emulation. I read people saying wait for the newer chipsets coming, but the newer wave of emulation handhelds are mostly in widescreen ratio or using the traditional gameboy style portrait build.

    The only thing I've disliked about these emulation units is being able to display most games properly. It's not possible to display most games full screen without the image being squished and not integer scaled. You are forced to compromise with either a much smaller viewing area or cut off around the edges.
    This is not the emulation devices fault. Rather that games were designed to run on very different resolutions that LCDs cannot accommodate for in a single screen. It's the price you have to pay to enjoy any game from any system.

    These handhelds are always a conundrum... Why do even they exist, why there are so many models, why they are so underpowered, who are the demographic target group, why are the screens so small? And I already mentioned in one of your past videos, the target for most of these devices mostly are guys over 30 (maybe 40+), and by that age, vision gets deteriorated also, we have much more powerful mobile phones with bigger screens. I know that there are a lot of teenagers and kids interest in these portable devices but not as many as adults, my kid got bored of one of these and went back to my phone. Arguments will start as "I need a smaller separate device", "your phone doesn't have decent controls/buttons", "My vision is ok and I'm 51 y/o", ", "it is convenient" and so on... but there are not enough reasons to have one of these toys... so....*sigh* I guess a toy is a toy, regardless if it is useless or not.
