Ole Ted has been killing for many many many years, he shoots low poundage heavy arrows and cut on impact broad heads also. Theres a reason! Also a good point Ted has is the lower poundage bows are quieter. Also after watching your vids on all this i think im switching back to fixed blade broad heads, i have had really good luck with rage and most of the deer ive shot have went down in sight. Bit thats also taking very ethical shots. Knowing where to hit them. But i want every advantage i can get. Good stuff sir. KEEP IT OUTSIDE’N!

This makes so much sense. I've hit several deer with mechanical broadheads that have done this very thing. I shot 125 grain Thunderheads 25 years ago and always had pass throughs. I switched backed to fixed blades last year but unfortunately didn't have the opportunity to take a whitetail. I appreciate your time and effort to inform us on your research! Keep it up!

Just getting back into bow hunting after a 10 year break, got a new bow and was getting ready to research arrows and broadheads but I found your channel and thank god I did, I have a set of Black Eagle Zombie Slayers and which ever field poor flys true after my shop paper tunes it I will be looking for single bevel broadheads of that weight, hopefully, thinking a 200-300 grain should be good as the arrow weighs 314 grains with fletching and nocks and factory inserts.

👍🏻👍🏻 I’m convinced you are spot on with your observations. Because of you I now shoot 600 grn GT3555s with 300 grns up front...about 23% FOC out of my trad bows at between 43 to 47 lbs. I’m hoping to become a ‘Fairy Duster’ before the end of the season so right now I cannot speak to ‘in animal’ performance but I can testify that these ‘adult’ arrows push my broadheads through my high density 3D target. So much so that I have to remove the broadhead before pulling the arrows. Nope they ain’t fast but my bows are much quieter & the arrows stop about as fast as a freight train. I have no doubt they will be devastating on a live target. Thanks for putting in the time & making sense of it all.

I found the Razorback 4 broadhead helped tremendously as the broadhead spins. Hence with the arrow spinning when hittting the target (animal) the broadhead stops the arrow rotation abruptly and thus causes paradox. The Razorback 4 broadhead by spinning stops itself and the arrow does not stop spinning and the difference between the Razorback and the Thunderhead is remarkable. My Thunderhaeds will get full penetration and will be laying on the ground whereas the Razorback (from same height Treestands) will be 6 inches deep in the ground!!

    Nicely done,
I have always suspected this as Murphys Law always applies.
The only mechanical broadheads I found I liked and had no problem with was Punch Cutter and Rocky Mountain. All gave me complete pass through shots and blades completely deployed. Then these company's went out of business or absorbed by another company and there designs discontinued because they worked and theirs didn't.

  • @BobBowers1967
    @BobBowers1967 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Years ago a tried a test which has to do with exactly what you are talking about in your video. I took a dozen decently (not perfect, but close) tuned shafts, and fletched 3 with 2" Quik Spin Speed hunters with a slight right offset, 3 shafts with 4" flex fletch helical, 3 with Blazers helical, and 3 with FOBs. I was shooting a Switchback XT at the time, decently tuned as well. My bow was sighted in from 20-80 yards. I bought a brand new, never been shot Block 4X4 and set it up at 60 yards on a calm day. I shot all 4 sets of shafts, each set at a new dot on the target for it's own group using regular field points. These arrows were Carbon Express Edge Hunters (which they don't make anymore) and weighed around 525 grains with 100 grain tip and the factory stainless steel half-outs. I had several interesting results. Group size was excellent with all fletchings at around 4" max. My Blazers hit low by about 4". The FF hit in the bull. FOB's were low, but not as low as the Blazers. The Quik Spins were high, and in the tightest group, but that is not what surprised me the most. When I walked up to the target, I took note of the depth of penetration each group had. FOBs, FF, and Blazers were all within 1/2" of being the same depth in penetration. But the QS were almost 5" deeper in the target. After I sat down and thought this through, I concluded that the shafts with the QS's were spinning faster, concentrating the energy in the shaft closer to the core or center of the shaft, thus directing more of the energy to driving the point deeper as opposed to "Impact Paradox", like the other shafts had experienced. So you might add this thought to the mix in your next tests and see if that too aids in less "Impact Paradox". I like to think of the shaft spinning faster similar to when you were swinging on a rope swing as a kid. If you got the rope twisted up so you would spin in a circle and leaned way out and stuck your legs out, you would spin slow and wobbly. But tuck your legs under you and tightly hug the rope and you would spin so fast you would couldn't see straight. Same thing with an arrow spinning faster vs slower. Love your video's BTW. Keep hammering man!

2 seasons ago I shot a deer @18yds from 28 feet up, and the animal was quartering away. Fairly steep angle but the shot was perfectly placed and the path was definite. I touched off and the arrow hit where I placed the pin. The path was perfectly placed to go through the pump house. The arrow then came out straight down and exited, pulling out sou intestines with it. Luckily it only took a few bounds and I was able to put another arrow through it. My guess at the time was that the mechanical deployed, caught, and redirected. Thank you for this video.

  • @rootnpearl

If you look what the hog does when the arrow hits is why your exit is higher than the entry. The hog drops just prior the the hit then he comes back up enough to raise the front end. With the arrow entering and then the side of the animal (which is moving) up in this case redirects the arrow up.

Love your vid's.... at the 14.00-minute mark in this vid you're talking about the different angles of entry and exit.... just my 2 cents worth... Could the deflection be caused purely by movement/motion of the target and or hitting something hard, not sure what..lol ??.When I say movement/motion if the arrow hasn't gone through bone and rubbed against it as the target has moved then maybe that could have caused the deflection...Just a thought.

1st off....love your videos, great info. My buddy and I are currently researching arrow weight, spine, FOC, penetration, speed, kinetic energy, etc. for a DIY archery elk hunt this September. We're Michigan flat landers that have never archery hunted anything larger than a whitetail. Do you have any videos on your thoughts of arrow builds, at distance? I'm assuming most of your pig penetration is at close distance (20 yards and in). What about a distance, elk shot? And I'm not talking about the 100 yard gun slingers flinging their "twislers" with their slide sight pins. I'm talking about a realistic 40-50 yard (max) opportunity on a big, thick, heavy elk.

Hey Ranch Fairy great video!!! If I could get some light to a setup for chasing elk. I had a buddy that let me borrow a grizzlystik momentum TDT total weight 650gr. Bow is Mathews DXT 28.5" draw, 68lb weight. I mean they shot but honestly seemed to do what is showing in your video. At 20yd seemed to kickout, or do that wobble. At 30yd though it was very accurate. This is my first go at adult arrow weight and I just purchased some Cutt throat broadheads 125gr on sale. I'm looking at the day six HD 300 they are going to be cut at 29" with 100gr ss outsert. Total weight is around 580gr. The reason for the day six arrows it the SS outsert also interior shaft thickness is unmatched from my research GPI is 11.2, that is more initial thoughts on that arrow but up to changes if you suggest another route. What is your thoughts on spine weight, also should I go more weight on the oursert if I go to a 350 spine? They do offer a 150gr outsert. I appreciate your time.

I know rotating the knock to get a bullet hole is good but some guys are saying that it's ALSO
important to check the natural rotation, which I believe is affected by the way your center serving is put on, before you chose which helical direction to put on.

Interesting video, however I think you are using visual observation to explain impact physics without regard to column loading of the arrow at impact. The reason for stiff spine is to resist the column loading of the shaft upon release of the bow string. The same is true in reverse at impact. The nock end of the arrow tries to cover up the point at impact causing the column loading effect to either to stay in line or shear off to side based on the weakness of the shaft because of an imperfect loading of the shaft due to the sudden stopping of the momentum. Very much like how a long bodied bullet will form around the point upon a perpedicular impact. Another very important result of the extreme FOC has to do with how much of the insert is placed inside the shaft. If all of the FOC weight was terminated at the end of the shaft the shear force on the connection is tremendous on an angled impact.

Fletching noise: I have some Black Eagle Traditional carbon arrows with helical fletching and they really make my arrows fly straight and correct for my errors, but make a fluttering sound in the air that would likely cause a critter to jump the string. That would be because your arrow SPINE is a perfect match, or at least very very close. You may want to explain spine matching before you tell people to just start upping FOC. If you’re adding that much weight up front and all of a sudden your arrow flies correct, you’re running a shaft that’s TOO stiff. Understanding arrow spine(static and dynamic) is key to flight and penetration.

Hello Ranch Fairy, I am shooting Carbon Express Maxima Red arrows at 29 inches. My draw length is 28 inches. I have my inserts already glued in. I think my arrow weight is right at 390 grains. My old arrows were 425 grains, but cant find those arrows any more. I have a very low FOC maybe 7%. Is there any way I can add weight by pushing weight from the Nock end up to the the front, and glue it in place where it wont move?? I ask because I've heard that if you were to heat the glue back up it could damage the arrow, and I cant afford to buy anymore. I live on a fixed budget and am going through health issues with my wife. So with that being said, I won't be able to get a couple different shaft stiffness and test which weight field point shoots better out of which arrow. I do know that I bought the arrow with the most weight per inch that I could get. I think it was 9.3 per inch. I shoot a 100 grain Swhacker broadhead. After seeing your videos on everything and you shooting one of the same heads that I have, I am going to be adding more weight to the front end and going to a single bevel head. It is the noise that causes the animal to FLINCH!!! Also, have you touched on background noise and how you can utilize the background noise to your advantage!!! Examples: A train is making noise!!! That's a good time to take a shot if possible!!! You could utilize that time to exit your stand!!! I also, believe that animals react to the impact of the arrow!!! NOTE: there's not much that can be done about that!!! However, shooting adult arrows!!! Can aid in the trajectory going through your game!!!
