I don't own a push mower but I work on them for friends who cant. I learned something I may have to use later. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

A 15/16 six point socket will work just fine 😊

Thanks for the tip on getting flywheel nut off. I didn't have my drill with me. So I go to TH-cam. It was like my phone read my mind because soon as I turned on TH-cam there you was and I watch for a minute I really appreciate that thank you sir. I usually use my impact drill.

I found the nut on my Aldi cheapie mower was the same size as my wheel brace. Nice to see a field vid without too many specialist tools.

Thanks very much for this video, Jeff! Although I stop the opposite end of crankshafts on chainsaws and other 2-stroke engines to remove flywheels and clutches it never occurred to me to do the same on mowers to torque the flywheel nut down. Of course now that I think about it, there’s no reason not to do the same thing to remove the nut. I wouldn’t hit a ratchet wrench that way for fear of breaking it but I might give that a try with my 1/2 inch breaker bar first before resorting to blocking the blade.
One other thing I might mention is that you tipped the mower over on the carb/air filter side, which on many engines is a mistake due to oil from the crankcase spilling out into the intake.
    Subbed.

Thanks Jeff.....I am sure my mower problem is a flywheel key needing replacement. Same situation after hitting a hard object.

Those flywheel keys have been a feature on B&S engines as far back as I can remember, they're known as "soft keys" because of the ease in which they shear when an object is struck with a lot of force by the blade, supposedly to keep the crankshaft from bending.

Hope this is my problem with my Troy built push mower. Struck the base of a fire hydrant and bent the blade. Now it won't start, but did start directly after the damage, and would not shut down right away. Wish me luck!

At 7:45 "certain torque" that means one of three torque values: German torque (guten night (good and tight)), fart torque (torque till you fart) and smoked.

Really good explanation. Very helpful. One point though..... you should have taken off the spark plug cap to prevent accidental engine start. Cheers.

@@jeffslawnmowerrepairandservice just as a heads up, there is a tool to hold the cutting blade in place for easy removal and can be useful for removing the fly wheel nut .... it's the "Atlas Blade Removal Tool for Lawn Mowers or Tractors ". It's sold at Walmart or Lowes, here in Canada we get it at Canadian Tire for about $14.99.

You can get by without it. Get a screwdriver or prybar and pry up on the flywheel while you hit the flywheel nut with a hammer. Just make sure the flywheel nut is flush with the threads so they don't get hit.

At least remove the spark plug cable when you do this. Disengaging the brake looks even less safe. But good tutorial otherwise.
