  • If you've ever run over a rock, log, stump, or other hard object while mowing...and then the lawn mower refuses to start... you may likely have a misaligned flywheel. In this video I will show you how to remove the flywheel, install a new flywheel key pin, align everything correctly, and get your mower running again. Thanks for watching.

    I work on these annoying things a lot and this is a pretty decent video. One thing to remember though. Before doing the tap & pry trick to remove the flywheel. Make sure the shaft tip is flush with the top of the nut. Then use a dead blow hammer if possible. With things being made so cheap these days. It don't take much to mushroom the shaft tip!

    You are a F..king genius! Luv Ya Man! 😃 I just bought a used Lawn Boy and tested it out, what a beast! I'm a short fat bastard and it was a little hard to keep up with the mower(self propelled) cause it runs so fast. I was impressed and polished it up when I was finished. Today, feeling like Superman, I decided to cut in an area not suited for the Lawn Boy and hit a large old tin can and killed the motor immediately. I couldn't get it started(when before 1 pull was all it took) I was so pissed at myself for "pushing" the mower like that. Then I carefully watched your video? And Poof! the starting problem with my mower vanished like a fart in the wind! Thanks Bro You Rock! 👊

    thanks for the informative video. Wouldn't you disconnect the spark plug wire before beginning work on the flywheel? How tight does the nut need to be?

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess, in the interest of safety, removing the spark plug wire would be a fine idea. Nonetheless, there's really zero chance that the mower is going to start up accidentally during this procedure. And I'm sure somewhere Briggs & Stratton has a torque specification for the flywheel nut, but I think "good and tight" will be all that is needed. Good luck with your mower!

    I've got a riding mower with Briggs and Stratton 21hp engine and I got from a friend they hit a stump and broke the pully that holds the blades and I fixed all that and it worked fine amazingly and then this yr I go to get it jumped off for spring and mowed my front and side then started the back and forgot the water hose was out and ran over UT but it didn't get all hung up or wrapped up in it. The blades cut the hose but it sputtered then died now won't crank back up. Turns over but not firing. I put new plug, new oil, and new fuel filter but nothing. Just turns over but won't fire. I didn't hear any weird noises or any sounds that anything broke. I don't know if maybe it already almost messed up from them breaking that pully that held blade even though it ran fine all summer just can't keep new battery charged for some reason but I'm more worried about the engine and if maybe hitting the hose was just enough to to finish the key or pin off. If you have any information at all that would help me I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This happens more often to push mowers than to riders, but it would still be worth removing the engine shroud and fan, and take off the flywheel nut to see it things are misaligned. If so, that is your problem. Good luck

    Gimped the lawnmower on some rope. Gonna take it apart tomorrow if I can and see if this was the culprit.

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rope would be less of a sudden jolt, but I'm sure it's still possible for that to cause a mis-aligned flywheel. Good luck.

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, they can be stubborn. Borrow or buy an impact wrench....a useful tool to have....and that should do it for you. Alternately, you could immobilize the engine by using a block of wood underneath the mower to keep the blade from spinning. Good luck.

Any help is appreciated!!

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably got some oil in the muffler from when you tipped the mower on its side to check out the damage. Move the mower to a corner of the yard, and start it up. Walk away and let it run for a few minutes, and see if that smoking clears up. I bet that's all you need to do.

    • @loislane4583
      @loislane4583 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Buckwsr I did see it was way over filled with oil, but the weird thing is, it was way over filled with oil BEFORE I ran over the root in the yard which made me replace the flywheel key. So I'm not sure why it would smoke AFTER the fact when before it didn't? I'm going to check the air filter and see if oil is in there too.

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@loislane4583 Like I said, you probably had the mower on its side at some point. That, plus being over-filled, is why oil made its way to the muffler. Again, give it a few minutes to burn off. Let me know how it works out!
