- Things went from beautiful, too dangerous, very quickly. I love it when it snows in Alaska, but this was TOO much snow. 4 FEET in less than a week is the most snow I've seen in a single storm cycle out here at the cabin and that kind of weight can cause structures to collapse. I'm Australian. The concept of living in snow and being snowed in is so completely foreign and so interesting. I want an Alaskan cabin!

A good trick for getting loads of snow off the roof like that is using a rope. If you can manage to throw it over the roof and loop it around a tree on the other side you can usually use it as a "snow saw" to cut large sections lose. Even easier if you are two people (one of each side holding the rope), but works with one as well :)

As someone who has lived in tropical climates for most of his life, I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like to survive in such a place. It might be fun to experience it though!
There's pros and cons to any lifestyle I suppose, but Hawaii suuuure is nice!
Think, I remember seeing a guy who had a 2x4 board and rope system on his metal roof so he could just run the boards from the top to the bottom and then back up till needed, it seemed to work well. Stay warm young man. Good luck, Mike
Yup, the rope tricks works, easier with two people.
Yeah, you don't really need a board on it, just a rope and a person each side of the ridge, saw that rope back and forth under the snow pack and off it comes. Wouldn't work so well here because the porch is at a lesser angle to the main roof pitch and creates a void when you stretch a rope to the edge from the ridgeline. Works better on a single pitch.

If he had a time machine he could travel back in time and include them in the build for you - that would also be kewl ? I'm interested in time travel myself and i tried to order one from Amazon but the picker must have misheard the item so i ended up with a tie machine - but at least i'm never going to be short on ties again - that's quite kewl as well !

I just found your channel and subscribed. I envy you and your life style. What do you do for work up there. I’m 72 and I just built a very tiny cabin hidden in a conservation area. Very hidden. Someday someone will find it. I only live half mile from it but I’m out there all the time. I enjoy it so much. You were smart to do this while you’re young. Very good.

They make something called a roof rake. Its basicly your broom but with more of a hoe end on it. They have a few different designs and work well for removing snow off a roof and keeping your feet on the ground. They also dont get you covered in snow.

Happy belated birthday Melanie💐! Possible idea for easier roof snow removal. Weight both sides of a cable that has a durable plastic piece of tarp attached. Toss weight over roof and secure to building. Return to loose side of cable, pull it down to base layer, attach extension ropes where needed to allow you to be ten feet away from building for safety before pulling the snow off. I have seen this method work more often than not...

I remember a snow storm in Northern Norway, when I was little, on Christmas night. It had snow so much during the night, that the next morning, when we wanted to get out of the house, we had to go out trough the second floor. First floor was under the snow. We also had to remove snow from the roof, before breakfast, since doors was getting jammed!
Wild! Ive heard of storms like that but never experienced one. I suppose they usually happen with wind gusts to load the snow in front of doors? Thanks for watching!
@@alaskacabinadventures We had over 2 meter with snow around the entire house. First floor was like a basement. I think that winter we had over 2.3 meter (7.54 feet) back then, just 2 years after I moved they had 2.4 meter (7.87 feet) in April!
Think it was around 0,5 meter with new snow in a single night (19,6 inch)
Beautiful but a pain in the ass !!! No truer words ever said about a snow blast !!!!! And as crazy as it sounds I actually miss it !!! It’s so crazy on what a person grows up with and becomes familiar with home !!!! No matter how awful! Home is still home sweet home !
