I spent 3 and a half years of my child hood in a 14x32 foot canvas army tent while my pa build our log cabin....a barrel stove kept us warm in both the tent and the house....a good old fashioned riveted barrel just like the one your other half removed from "her" place!! There are a lot of cabins much like that round where I live, buckets under the sink, suit case generators, wood heat and a whole lotta woods.....I couldn't ever live any other way!!
I put a scoop of ashes (from my woodstove), and then a scoop of fragrant wood chips (leftovers from milling and felling) into the hole after use. The ash helps keeps things sanitary (neutralizer), and the wood chips for the pleasant smell. I keep a box in the outhouse with a lid on hinges that contains two compartments. One for the ash, and one for the wood chips. I keep the scoop on a lanyard so it doesn't go down the hole, ever. I like that venting idea.
WOW!! WHAT A REALLY GREAT CABIN.......THE BEFORE & AFTER PICTURES SHOW HOW MUCH WORK HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED WITH THE UPSTAIRS TURNING OUT AMAZING, ESPECIALLY WITH THE DECK!! THANKS FOR THE TOUR & GOD BLESS 😊❤😮❤😊 AND A BIG HI TO "NORMAN"!
Very nice cabin. The barrels from back in the 40’s,50’s and 60’s were thicker metal and made for a nice heat source. I made a couple barrel stoves in the early 70’s but they did put off more heat than necessary 🥵
I am truly captivated by the full tour of your wife’s rustic log cabin in Alaska. Your dedication to creating and showcasing this off-grid retreat reflects a deep appreciation for both craftsmanship and the beauty of remote living. The warmth and charm of the cabin highlight your commitment to making a cozy and unique space. Sharing this journey is both inspiring and heartwarming. And I am Floating Village Life.
Congratulations with the baby🎉🎉 wow how awesome to see you both! I just love her cabin it’s cozy and what a well built cabin! Thank you for sharing and again nice seeing you both. 🇺🇸❤️🙏🏻 wife looks fantastic after having the baby❤
I just found your channel yesterday and have been binge watching ever since. I make sure to like all videos and will try to comment so youtube algorithm will pick up and recommend your channel to more people because its a gem of a channel. Sooo many people will enjoy watching. I know i have. I especially loved your Thanksgiving/ Christmas video. Keep including those cooking videos too...i LOVE seeing how you cook offgrid in a cabin. You guys have made it so cozy and the music is amazing. Im going to purchase your Christmas download and listen to it as i cook and clean. It is so relaxing and lowers my blood pressure. You and your beautiful sweet wife are living my dream. Im 53 now and grew up in WV with a dad & mom who always took my brother & i camping & fishing all of our life. Thank you both for sharing this and all of your amazing videos. ❤
Wife cabin is really nice !!! Love the logs !!! Glad she got this and is enjoying!!! I could hear the baby in the background ❤️ Norm is happy too !!! Thanks for sharing , love your channel !!!!!
Really enjoyed this video. You guys are living the life in these awesome cabins. Your wife is very pretty and seems so sweet. Your blessed indeed with your family of three and this awesome life you have. Loved this cabin thanks for sharing.
Beautiful home young lady. You are both very lucky to have met each other, you have a great life ahead of you. Regards from the West Coast of Ireland. 👍☘☘☘
The really cool thing is that this cabin has passed on to a second generation, and in time, it will pass to a third generation and son on... I love it!
at one time people here in Bulgaria ran away, they wanted to be in the big city and the villages were dying, now the opposite has happened, they started looking for peace. it doesn't matter how important it is that you are in nature at peace, not many people can afford this pleasure. I wish you to live and be healthy! many hugs and good luck for the future
Really good vid. Cabin was built right from the beginning. Solid. may look for some railroad steel or something like that or cut you some timbers long enough to reach across under the cabin to add support for later on. It looks pretty solid under there. Those creosoted ties will last more than a lifetime. Keep it dry. Yeah, you need a good walkway off the hill. She's got a baby to not fall with or get all strained out of shape. You are fortunate, you have a wonderful wife. A big thanks to her for sharing that part of life. That's really not that easy. Build a metal guard around the upper stove pipe keep that youngun' away from it. No need to learn the hard way or fall down the ladder burnt hurt. The barn style roof is a good build for more space upstairs. We do that here a lot. Those old boiler plate stoves last several lifetimes if kept dry. All right , next time. Look forward to more of the mobile cabin build. If you want to build a cabin check out Kyle's Cabin channel. He's up in northern Minnesota building one now with his other house and going to build another one. He's learning and does simple work. There's others but some are crazy.
Excellent thanks for the great tour. I am sure you will have lots of family fun in both your cabins. Well done. Big pat on your Dads back for the amazing ladder. Very cool.
What a beautiful cabin. I hope we get to see more of your wife's cabin. Good to see you and Norm and your wife and your new addition to your family. Looking forward to future videos.
2:47 The black tube is a variation on a USDA vault toilet design from a couple decades ago. They call it the SST - sweet smelling toilet. You can find the plans online. Basically you run a large black pipe from above the roof line down into the pit toilet. That controls smell by controlling airflow. As the sun heats up the top of the pipe, it creates airflow down from the seat, into the pit, and then up thru the tube and out. If you build it correctly it will keep most of the smell of a pit toilet away from the toilet user.
Thanks for the lovely vid Matt and Louise, enjoy your time in that awesome cabin. I wouldn't go to the outside toilet without Norman 🐾😂..... I mean, that bear 🐻looks cute, but just in case.
That knotty pine is unbelievably gorgeous. For being exposed for decades it looks like it will last another 50 years. Great log cabin with upgrades in progress is wonderful to preserve it. Thnx for tour.❤
Looks amazing and homely. Would pay good money to stay there for a summer just to relax and decompress from modern life. I envy you two and wish I could live like this everyday.
This is one of my favorite. Always wanted to build one of these. It is always difficult to get me to leave cabin vacations homes 😂 like you literally have to drag me out.
Was great seeing your rustic cabin,I'm more of a 5 R's kind of person, refuse reduce reuse repurpose recycle. Awesome your utilising old materials and such a beautiful old cabin

Look forward to your next tour , from Australia . meant to also include , " I want one " always wanted a log cabin in the bush .
Lovely space and Louisa is so handy! What a wonderful job she’s done. I’ve often wondered … with all your carpentry skills, are you a carpenter by trade, or do you have another occupation?
