    I deeply appreciate the detail you all, but especially Dougal on the technical issues put into these videos. No sugar coating or excessive verbiage, simply fun, engaging, and informational. I'd almost add inspiration, but at some point, you may put up your FINANCIAL P&L of your adventures and I'm bracing myself.
    Wondering if either of you needed to get a captain's license for your voyages, if that is required or if it impacts hull insurance etc.?

    She is a great looking boat, and I really like your channel . As to changing out your anchor, I thought I would just offer an observation in that it’s not so much the weight of the anchor that is defining characteristic but rather the amount of surface area digging into the bottom that needs to be considered. Just my two-cents worth, looking forward to watching more of your adventures. Cheers from the Pacific North West, south gulf islands.

      Road Dog - that’s the idea we had when moving from the trawler.. We don’t have a sailing background but like the idea of the sails vs a wing engine for truly redundant propulsion and long range. The sailing part of it is actually proving to be fun too.

    You have convinced me! I am a Cat man but I have listened to you and 180nm a day on a sail is pretty good in the accounts department and the variable pitch prop saves $$ too.
    Cassidy is very lucky mum & dad are so smart as until now I would not have considered a Sailing Trawler but it makes perfect sense.
    When possible can you comment on your video gear, I run a Sony A7r2 on a Came TV gimbal, retired electronics engineer here so I expect to see you install some of the new big Norwegian solar panels.
    The factory video of 2011 had the boat at 18kts under sail only so I am guessing that your run across the Pacific ocean will be very enjoyable.

    Be really interesting about 6 months in to get your, Jens and Cassidy perspective on what you like better and all your take on moving from all power to a motor sailor. The good bad and ugly of the comparison. Great videos!

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sea Travel - there are some distinct differences in how the two different boats handle different ways if running them. We will definitely provide some honest opinions about the pros and cons of the motorsailer vs the trawler. I can already say in beam seas with light winds we miss having stabilization. The roll takes some getting used to.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      dahak972 - we paid exactly $2.75 per gallon for diesel from the truck. In California it’s over $4.00 on the fuel dock most places. So I’d say it was exactly the opposite!!

    • @dahak972
      @dahak972 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cassidy's Sailing Trawler a couple of grand for gas is a big bill for most of us.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dahak972 - did I imply that it's not a lot of money for us? I hope not because we definitely are cognizant of all expenses and don't intentionally waste money.. I was responding to what I read in your first comment about delivered fuel costing a lot and in fact it was not any more than if we had gone to a fuel dock. We need fuel no matter where it comes from and if convenience and great service doesn't cost extra, why not take advantage of a good service!

  • @madisonian50
    @madisonian50 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Ultra looks nice, but you might want to consider that 316 stainless has a lower yield strength than 514 galvanized. Also, you mention you plan to check the swivel screws to be sure they aren’t backing out. But what if the swivel is side loaded in a surge? Are the threads on the screws strong enough?

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joshua Scholnick - sure there are plenty of steels that have higher strength than 316L. Like anything though, if the gemoetry of the part is designed for the working and ultimate loads based on the specific material used, then there is no reason not to use stainless. Anchors definitely are not parts where adding additional material or weight as a way to get strength is an issue.
      There is certainly a worry about loads onnthe swivel outside of the angles for which it’s designed but I’m okay with the risk and will monitor it. The failure mode is likely to be deformation rather than ultimate failure but there’s always a risk.
      Like I mentioned in the video though, there is an almost religious debate that goes on about swivel vs not swivel and I’ve seen pages and pages of discussion/argument about it and understand both sides is the argument.
      One benefit of the stainless anchor that we really like is how much easier it sheds mud when retrieved.

    • @madisonian50
      @madisonian50 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      John at Morgan’s Cloud, who has mildly contrarian views on things like lifelines and tethers, recommends a length of chain between the swivel and anchor, plus a high-strength shackle. You’re not buying what he’s selling ;)

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joshua Scholnick - I can see the benefits of a shirt length of chain. It would negate one of the benefits of the Ultra swivel - which is that it flips the anchor into the correct orientation when it hits the roller and I’ve already found this to be beneficial.
      With our old Rocna with a long swivel, occasionally it would want to come onboard upside down and that would require some dangerous acrobatics leaning over the bow to right or or poking at the anchor with a boat hook.
      For now I feel pretty well informed on the issue and the benefits of the swivel outweigh any risk. I will definitely see how it performs over time. So far we’ve only got about 6 nights on this ground tackle.
      High on the list is replacing our chain which while not yet unsafe has lost all its galvanizing and brings a mess of rusty saltwater onto the deck every time we retrieve the anchor.

    My now deceased neighbor had a Wm. Garden 47' ketch built in Taiwan. Took off a year from American Airlines to sail it back to Northeast. Complained that the damn thing wouldn't point for anything. Beam reach here, beam reach there. How well does your beautiful yacht do going to windward?

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gm Furnald - we don't have enough experience to speak to that intelligently yet - but on the trip to Panama the wind was ahead of the beam almost the entire way and we did okay. Motorsailing though, not pure sailing.

    With all the rusty, corroded components, I'm wondering if you bought a Nordhavn that has already sunk? What hull number is your vessel? I think it was number 5 of that design that sunk when brand new but I could be wrong. I'll take a look at the old videos and post a comment later. Did it used to belong to Tokie Elliot?

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Parker - this boat was absolutely never sunk and actually hardly has any issues with rust other than things like what we showed with the air intake. It’s an incredibly clean boat.
      This is the replacement boat for hull number 5 which was the one that was dropped when unloading from the ship. This hull is number 8, the latest one built is number 9. They skipped hull 3 so there are only 8 boats total.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Henri Thebault - indeed the foam behind the material on the headliner panels has rotted away in places causing the fabric to sag when it is warm and expands. Something to re-do but it’s low on the list of priorities for now.

    500 bucks for expediated passport? i just checked and it hasnt changed: 175 dollars. are you trying to gather sympathy or what?

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Far from it. Simply sharing information so that people might learn from my mistakes. I got a passport in 2 days and to do that required the use of a passport expediting agency in Washington DC where they hand carry the documents to the passport agency and get a passport back the same day. So the real expense was the $500 fee for the expediting agency, the $179 to the state department, and then first delivery fed ex both ways. So closer to $800 all in. A very expensive oversight.
      That said I am very happy that a service that does this exists!
