    Ran a power boat down to the Canal about a month ago, was intercepted in about the same location, fired some warning shots at them, and they hauled ass....they were NOT officials...
    If I'm running a sailboat, I usually run through The Bahamas, then go between Cuba and The DR, much better wind direction.... Now that you have a sailboat...think best wind direction, not rhumb line, unless you need to get there... Fair Winds!!!

      Chris Agree Its a dangerous world out there on high Sea’s, once you leave G7 nations safety ect. Its a US flagged ship,recommend he has Springfield AR-15 auto rifle + 2 Hand Gun on-board etc, locked in captains locker for emergencies ! with 2 keys required to unlock ( Captain and Firstmate / Wife when on-board ) or second key Captain does not have on trigger locks ( or vise versa )! ( shark on fishing line etc, not always Human issues. ). The ship is US soil or as you choose based on registry, I ... Read now many countries not allowed to have even registered guns onboard? If in their waters, but bottom line is Ship is US registry so onboard US laws, no mater where she sails, hope that is still the case if International Law expert can advise, thanks. th-cam.com/video/Tg_G5llE5Bo/w-d-xo.html. also can’t get deported even without valid passport if you stay on The Boat ! US soil any panama officer etc, no jurisdiction, also question for Lawyer :)

    It is not unusual to have pirates in Nicaragua, just recently there was an incident that pirates boarded a sail boat. We had an experience with our Nordhavn 40 also along the coast in Nicaragua a few years ago, boats that circled around our boat at about 5 or 6 pm it was almost dark and it was unpleasant, we locked our doors etc. and after a while they left. But at times you can expect a situation like that to happen. Enjoy your trip, after that never had a problem again.

      billy allen - we were healed over a kid for the passage as we were on a bad point of sail for days on end and trying to maximize assist from the sails with the wind forward of the beam. Hoping that it’s not a common thing.
      There are some differences between the boats for sure and we will continue to get more performance data from this boat. So far though we really line her.

    I have to say I really love everybody's positive attitude. No matter what happened nobody let it ruin the trip. You guys adapted and overcame anyting the boat or mother nature thrown at you. I look forward to seeing your video of you going through the canal. I'm hoping next year to finally make that trip myself.
    At the end of the video did they bring you your fuel? Or is that just their version of a gas station on the water.
    Look forward to watching your next adventure.
    PS did you fix your air conditioning? The reason I'm asking is that normally no air conditioners drain to the pan except when there's an issue with their main drain hose that comes directly out of the compressor. I'm not sure what system you have but I do know on all of my boats and RVs that's how it works just like the one in your house. What you are doing is perfect as long as you keep it clear. I know it's a pain in the butt but it's better than sweating and dealing with humidity every morning when you wake up. Again good luck to you.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +david frank - we came in to Panama in the dark at night aonwe goes up to the fuel dock in Shalter Bay marina m til the next morning. Figured we’d fill up the tanks while we were there. Instead of land based tanks line we are used to seeing in the US they have fuel in a big metal boat.
      We have reconfigured the AC drain so that it can drain from the pan while heeled and not overflow but it’s still kind of a work in progress. Fishing the hose is not exactly easy.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sailing Vessel Freedom - the extreme heel is not fun. Hoping that we spend more time on more pleasant points of sail when we are not tied to a schedule.
      The motion of this boat in a head sea is so much more pleasant and soft than our Nordhavn 40. I attribute a lot of that to the extra waterline length and displacement but we didn’t experience any of the pounding that we used to get in the 40 with only 35 feet of waterline.

  • @fxpthl
    @fxpthl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Such a beautiful boat! I was surprised at how much she healed over and created some issues with your ac drainage. There are no stabilizers on her? The boarding by those "army" fellows looked pretty sketchy and must have put your crew alert while they were aboard. So many crazy countries out there that you just cannot be too careful. Was Cassidy with you on this leg? Didn't see her in any of the shots.

      +S Newland - we had current and wind against us the whole time so that must have had a lot to do with it. I’m optimistic that the economy is better in most other conditions. Plus we were running the generator 24:7.
      So far on the pacific side is the canal we are seeing fuel burn under 2gph at 8 knots pure motoring so way better than what we were seeing on the passage from Florida.

      Indeed. When it first became apparent that there was no way to keep them from boarding I grabbed an epirb from our ditch bag and had it ready to manually light off. I also sent Jen a note with our satellite communicator to call the coast guard if she didn't hear from us in an hour - and they took longer than that so she called the coast guyard and they said that they are taking the incident seriously.
      One frustrating thing - is these bandits were very proud of the fact that the "Estados Unidos" donated their 38 foot Boston Whaler with 3 outboards. Doesn't make me too happy that the US government is providing tools to foreign governments to harass US citizens abroad.

      Gil Harrison - you probably won't find anything rigged specifically for fishing without a custom boat, but this boat is surprisingly fishable. The cockpit is large and we can easily troll with 5 rods. The only downside is the tubing the ties the back stay into the rear corners of the boat get in the way while fighting fish but we have learned to manage with it.

    seemed like your bald bearded friend was taunting the coastguards. Not a good idea, may be inadvertent, but i see that kind of behavior when i travel from some white Americans.

      Johnny C - It was more like trying to bring some humor to a bad situation. We wanted to try to connect with them as humans to minimize the amount of damage they would do or stuff they would steal or worse. And we wanted to get them off of our boat as fast as possible.

      Yes best to say little as possible in situations like that, especially when there is a language barrier !? ... captain very focused on requests from officers, rest of the crew mouse quite, unless asked question from Captain !?

    How can that happen to a crew of four/five big and fit americans who probably can handle guns much better than those nicaraguan mdfkrs. Don´t u guys travel with guns?

      While tempting, international cruising with ANY guns on-board is dubious at-best, illegal in many ports including many US ports.

      Wayne McPhail - no boats are perfect. The air conditioning thing was definitely a design or manufacturing oversight but it’s a small thing and relatively easily addressed. Overall the quality of this boat is better than almost any production boat.

    Sorry guys but I get headache from your camerawork. 2-3 sec shaky scene followed by another 2-3 sec shaky scene...followed by another... You seem to like short shaky scenes ))) Buy a gimbal or mount the camera somewhere. Look how other sailors film and learn. I have always wondered how life on a motorsailer would be since nobody have....and now you have one. Why not try to catch the feeling how it is to live onboard. Longer scenes of everyday life-steady and slow camerawork. Dolphines we have seen everywhere.....not interesting. Nice boat you have in general ))

      Hannu K - we actually do have gimbaled camera rigs and shoot with those more often than the straight handheld cameras. Definitely appreciate the feedback but I would also say it’s rare that I see much of the sailing videos out there stabilized.
