      Assume this was Tokkie’s replacement boat after the first was dropped?

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      animal494 - that is correct. It’s a little confusing to follow the saga because apparently Nordhavn gave him a “loaner” boat after the first one was dropped and that one was also named Ata Marie for some period of time but it has a gray hull and the 2 stateroom/sailing cockpit configuration.

    What a fiercely opinionated craft with some super interesting features.
    Also, don’t worry about sailing. If you ever feel overwhelmed just bring the sail in and furl it up - you can learn slowly. Sailing is the best way to cross oceans at low cost and you’ll learn to love the hybrid. :)
    I’ve had my eye on that boat and it’s lovely to see it go to you. Congratulations!

    I've enjoyed seeing your family's experiences aboard the 40 and look forward to the continuing adventure. As a lifelong sailor who recently moved to a trawler, I'm very interested to learn about the 56 and see how she balances the "motor" with the "sailor." Learning how to sail will be a fun and ongoing project and we appreciate being invited to follow along. I like the comment about the "three boats" that you have, and the fact that you have a pure motor trawler as your failsafe if the sailing becomes uncomfortable, you lose the wind, etc. The only advice I'd ever give about sailing is how to determine when to reef sails: it's when you first wonder whether or not you should reef!
    Best wishes from the Pacific Northwest. We'd love to see you guys up here again!

    I really enjoy your being absolutely clueless, because I am too and it's inspiring that other people share my sort of "Yeah. I can do that", attitude in doing something that is becoming more and more an ambition of mine. I started looking at motor yachts and trawlers, but as time went on motor-sailers seemed like the most practical solution to skill level (0), and financial ability. I also like the quirky accomodations due to the quasi-sailboat hull shape, they feel cosier and the water is more immediate to the experience. I've pushed all the buttons and looking forward to the next episode. Kudos.

    I could never quite understand why this model never really gained popularity because only I think my 12 have been built. I think it’s a wonderful layout and it’s pretty much three boats and one with the adjustable prop. Enjoy your journeys with this incredible motor sailer.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks - They actually only made 8 but it's still an available model to build if anyone wanted too. I am sure that a version built with some of the evolutionary design features that Nordhavn has gone to in the last 10 years would be an amazing boat. I really hope they build more!

    looks like a great boat. If you are new to sailing, two small suggestions that could be helpful. #1 on a big sailboat, when handling lines coming off of the winches, keep your pinky toward the winch drum instead of your thumb and forefinger; #2 when the jib is luffing and you're on deck, don't let the hardware at the jib's clew hit you - it's big and it's pretty heavy especially if it's getting swung around by a luffing jib.

    Congratulations. I've always found the MS interesting but there were only a few videos of it in action. The old Jeff Merrill video was the only one that provided any sense of the boat underway. I'm looking forward to following your experiences living on it.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joe User - that is a good video and we watched it several times while trying to get a sense of what the boat is all about. It doesn't really show much as far as how you actually would run the boat with a combination of motor and sail though. I do like the fact that the boat is able to actually make good headway under pure sail power in the right conditions. We are really looking forward to learning the boat and hope to be able to show people its true capabilities under everyday real world conditions and usage.

    • @Apollo9733us

      The problem with this particular vessel is there is NO real life cruising with it and I can't figure it out, its like the best of both worlds with an adjustable feathering prop. It should be a world wide cruiser and yet no one has done it. I so look forward to the day to day operations of this motor sailor. I understand its a bit power hungry and that can be fixed with solar panels and a wind turbine. The previous owner added a second auto pilot which was very smart. The actual layout of this MS is beautiful. Its a brilliant design, and I for the life of me can't figure out why this MS never took off. One of your first video's should be an in depth tour of this incredible MS from a new owners perspective and then launch into the travels and adventures. I'be been aware of the 56 for some time and specifically this boat, but he never video taped the adventures and posted them. NO one has done this on the 56 and I am so glad you will do it:)

    I have been thinking of Nordhavn because of your other film. especially the part where your daughter Cassidy showed her place in living on boat. that appealed to me as a seller, that a daughter could love the water as much as I. I Just want to be part of a water living family, so can you now make a family film about your new boat, from the angle of each family member. children are our soul and future, I would like to be able to show my team that water living is fantastic.

      +Glen Peters - it’s definitely a misunderstood boat and wasn’t a success at all if you look at the small number of boats produced. Technically and functionally through the boat seems great. Really well executed. As we learn more about the boat and start cruising we hope that we can share more about the real world benefits if the 56MS.

      Jonathan Jones, we've got almost 5000 nautical miles on the boat now and unfortunately almost all of it with no wind or wind forward of the beam so have not had a chance to really take advantage of large fuel savings from the sails yet! Hopefully we will sail in better conditions soon.

    Motor sailing is the way to go. even if the wind is down, and the engine is doing most of the work, keeping some wind in the sails will help to stabilize the boat. You really don't need anything else as far as a wing engine or stabilizers.

    Great looking boat and excellent choice. Couple of suggestions. Next time back her into the slings won't have to pull the forestay. Second you'll enjoy the motion with the sails up. Very good motion that very few get sick on..Also rig a self tacking jib/Genoa. It's easy and a lot of designs out there to DIY one. Huge game changer.

      The Diesel Auxiliary is the back-up, the Sails should be your primary. The challenge in a motorsailer vs a "sailboat" is tacking takes a bit more time and planning, but with modern autopilots and integrated navigation your not tied to the wheel on long reaches ...especially offshore.

    I was wondering who bought Tokkie's boat. That is a famous boat. I guess I'll wait on the 65MS or the Xquisite. But that 65 Neel looks good too.

    From the briefest of glimpses of your variable pitch prop, it looks to be suffering from electrolysis which left unchecked will cost mega money to replace. As a marine engineer I suggest you get it checked out asap

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      jeff way - thanks. The surveyor looked at the prop in a lot of detail and I think what you are seeing is just the fact that the previous owner had it painted with some type of antifouling paint that would normally be used on a hull rather than a product like Prop Speed and it is just wearing unevenly where growth had attached.

    Congrats on your new boat it looks great. I wonder why they stop making them?. Looking forward to seeing the walk through, safe travels

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +AustralianDude1 - they didn’t necessarily stop making them - it’s still listed by Nordhavn as part of their lineup and they would happily build someone a new boat.
      It seems that it was a misunderstood boat and not readily accepted by the market. We are hoping that as we learn and share more about this boat people will gain some interest. It would be a shame to see a boat model with such potential never see another built.

      Thank you for your quick response. It looks like a yacht that could be handled by just two people. Interested to know if you agree after sailing her for a while. Enjoy very much your story.

I'm always taken my boat to Dana Point and go deep sea fishing to Catalina Island or San Clemente Island for big fish Tuns,Yellowtail, Mahi Mahi ,Sea Bass and other species . Lobster season is September to March every year in California.
