The long jump off the tower was filmed twice and it looks like the wrong clip was used (I went back up there to get a better angle when I had my flying hack on). I can for sure confirm the launch star is only available on Sunbaked Sand Castle.
This isn't the only strange Launch Star. There's one in Deep Dark Galaxy. To quote the Super Mario Wiki: "For unknown reasons, there is a Launch Star high above the galaxy. It is only possible to get to the Launch Star by hacking, and it will only shoot Mario or Luigi out into space with nothing to land on. This will make them fall to their death. When the level reloads, they will start out in space and die right afterwards which eventually leads to a Game Over."
There’s another one in smg2, in the first Galaxy Sky Station, it’s being far out near the planet you start on (I think it appears only in Star 2 though I could be wrong) and it does the same thing Deep Dark Galaxy’s Unused L.S does. Launch you to your death and spawn you out in space to die over and over.
I think Deep Dark Galaxy's purple coin star was originally going to be just as big a purple coin stars in Honeyhive, Beach Bowl, Freeze Flame, Desert Dune, Seaslide, and Melty Molten Galaxy, due to the unique object placement not found in other stars, as well as the fact that Captain Toad says "No purple Coins in the sand", but then Nintendo thought this game had way too many of these slow and boring grinding stars, so Nintendo toned it down to just the ghost ship, which thank god.
Just trying to be honest here, Explanation number three could be that the star below IS the star that you use when you get rid of the plant, that magically teleports to that planet after you defeat it. It is probably visible as a mistake, or so that it may give a hint as to what you need to do, by defeating the plant.
Since I’m younger, this is what gives me nostalgic the most. Minecraft? Blagch. PlayStation 3? Blang. Odyssey or Sunshine? Blammo. Super Mario Galaxy? BINGO! My Nintendo has been not working, or we sold it somewhere, I haven’t had one in so long. Probably like 4 years I haven’t even owned a Nintendo. Haven’t touched it since probably a year before. Completely forgot about this game until now. I don’t think I even finished the game, I wanna go back and beat them. Or maybe my brain just wants more because I miss the game. I remember Super Mario Party, Racing, etc. I’m going into this child phase I guess. Minecraft obsessive, a “More Mario Mindset”, etc. If I had more to say I forgot it, and I need to go to bed. I've always wanted to see someone do an in-depth video on the Oceanside Spiderhouse. No other TH-camr I've tried ever takes me up on the suggestion- even those who ONLY cover Zelda games. For instance: why was the place sealed up? Who built the place? If it's sealed up why are so many Stalchildren inside? Why are there pictures of Skull Kid everywhere? Why are the Stalchildren waiting inside for Skull Keeta when the Oceanside Spiderhouse isn't anywhere close to Ikana Canyon? I always thought the Oceanside Spiderhouse is one of the most overlooked things in Zelda lore, and I keep hoping to this day someone would take up the challenge of trying to unpack and really dive into the mysteries surrounding this underground bunker.
There was definitely an interview that was conducted a long time ago by Nintendo that at least explains some of the questions about the Spiderhouse. It only covers the information about the spiders inside there, how they got cursed, and some other things related to them including what their purpose is to the game only, I believe. It was for Ocerina of Time, though.
Why the transparent image of Miyamoto while saying we can never ask him, like he's a ghost? He's very much alive and he does interviews fairly regularly! I bet with some effort, at the right event, you could ask him this very question. Of course, he probably wouldn't know since he was very likely not the actual developer who left that star, which is probably what you actually meant. But it's too late to turn back now, I'm posting this comment anyway!
Or, explanation 3. Probably not true, but that unreachable launch star could be where the launch star that brings u to the same place is stored. I know this was a tactic in Paper Mario, where characters and assets were hidden 100 units below the ground to be stored and easily moved when they were needed. However, I don’t know if this is still a thing. Just a thought. :)
Does Mario Galaxy work by having new launch stars get moved around from typically offscreen areas or spawning them when needed? If it moves them around, does the ‘unreachable’ launch star still appear in the same location after the actual launch star from the planet appear? I’m just wondering if it’s the dev thinking players wouldn’t be able to see it.
That was my thought as well, as it seems to be common practice to prepare every asset, then hide the stuff you don’t need yet, so you can easily bring them into view, instead of having to load them in, causing slow downs and such.
I've always thought of the aliens in Majora's Mask interesting and wondered where they came from. I wonder if you could find there models in the game? Maybe they're just floating around somewhere in the game until the cutscene starts and ends. Another mystery in Majora's Mask is the Oceabside Spider House. Like who built it, why they build it, and why was it cursed? Giving that there are pictures of Skullkid in through out the building, it could be that a cult who worshipped the Skullkid lived there and the "curse" wasn't really a curse but a spell to conceal the building from sight. This could be reason the guy who gives you the giant's wallet didn't notice the house until you killed all the skulltulas breaking the spell.
I made a weird discovery no one ever made a video on. In Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the first scene, if you hack the camera and turn it to the right, in the sky are floating rocks that are smoking... if you zoom up they are just random meteorites floating in space.
i'm really happy about the amount of content you are able to make out of super mario galaxy alone. i love this game and how mysterious the atmosphere is (which is justified seeing as how much is hidden in these games).
There are development scenarios where developers will "hide things under the map" until they are needed, then teleport them to the positions they're needed when they are needed for a scene or progression. What if this star is the same star from the end of the level, like, *the* same star? It is likely loaded only in that level, because it is literally the ending launch star; maybe it sits far outside the play area until it needed, and then is teleported into position when it's needed to launch you to the star?
I think it has to do with that when you unlock the launch star the unreachable one gets moved to the planet you are standing on that maybe explains the same destination
I only want to point out that when you begin the level (first star) you arrive by flying, following this exact same line that starts from this launch star. It is only there for you to be flying at the very beginning, it's that star that launches you into the "mission". That is why you can not reach it.
is the launch star still there when you unlock the star at the end of the level? perhaps it just teleports from that location to the size-changing planet
An explanation could be that the star was being stored in that location only to be teleported to its proper location upon meeting the criteria. This is done all the time in games where they store something to be called later in an inaccessible part of the map, usually underneath. I guess in this case they forgot to move it’s location before it’s teleported but it’s so far out the way that you would barely see it anyway
It's likely that is just the launch star for the level, but it is not in position yet because you haven't activated it yet. Try activating the one on that sand planet with the spiky plant and seeing if the star is still there, if not then it's just moved to where you can use it. The main reason I think this is that you can see a trail leaving the launch star, which means you had to have used it before, and it launches you to the next section of that level, therefore it's just the same one that you progress with, just out of use into you activate it.
Dragon city is the game where they stick wings on literally anything and call it a dragon. Ice cream, ice cube, a pepper...literally just objects with wings and faces slapped on. It's hilarious.
The kind of spare quiet music and landscapes with a giant planet in the background that's nearly featureless makes this galaxy look so bizarre- almost unfinished. I think desert levels are my favorite kinds of levels in Mario games and this is one that I don't think about as often because it just seems so obscure even though it has one of the biggest star counts in the game. I much enjoy Slipsand galaxy with its beautiful galactic size ruins structures and nighttime appearance- when real life deserts are much more lively. Also the music is the most beautiful
@SwankyBox If I recall correctly, the light beam on a launch star only appears after you've used it at least once and we are able to see it in your footage. I might just be remembering this incorrectly, though.
Since the launch star leads you to the same place the other launch star leads you, isn't more plausible that the impossible launch star is actually the final launch star that waits to move to its final location?
Have you ever covered the inaccessible island in the first level of GoldenEye? When my GameShark finally let me go there, it was the most awesome thing ever for 13 year old me.
There are 3 launch stars most players will miss in Honeyhive Galaxy. 1 in Bee Mario Takes Flight, 2 in Trouble on the Tower. They only appear after returning back to the main starting planet.
It's most likely that that's the same warpstar that appears during the mission when you play normally. Usually assets have to be on the map so the game can call them when they're needed. It's likely that warp star is just called into play when you activate it.
How do you choose which games are next to be featured? There's some Out Of Bounds stuff in A Hat In Time I've been interested in. I was told by someone that in the Seal the Deal DLC, every area of the DLC is loaded in at the same time and is in the same area. There's also a glitch that can only be done in older patches of the game where, if you pause the game and change the language setting at roughly the same time you hit either the Conductor or DJ Grooves, they will fall into the void below. The thing is though, they fall for about 2-3 minutes. So I want to know just how far down that void is. There are also other instances of OoB stuff where parts of levels you are transported to are in fact far away from where you enter it. Mustache Girls gauntlet and final phase of her boss fight for example.
In grandmaster galaxy, you can see more than just that launch star. In early sections, you can see tons of loaded entities in unloaded sections. Just look back.
Since the launch star has the same path as the one from the planet you were on, my theory is that it IS that launch star, and is teleported into position when the plant is killed.
It's crazy how many things don't get caught in the testing of the game before the release. Really goes to show that despite their best efforts, devs will always make some mistakes or forget to remove something (they're only human). Big respect to game devs; we love you guys❤
Those mushrooms in the video you talked about are actually possible to get. All you need to do is hold forward, and repeat a spin jump until you get there.
We also moved some of the launch stars permanently in the game knowing that the locations would be permanently there if it was remade somehow without anybody knowing that we did it. The original location of some of the launch stars were in a completely different location. We moved the launch stars sometime in 2007.
We also somehow knew how to perfectly clear all the levels that somehow accessed in very far away locations. Once we cleared those stars, the star locations moved to the areas that you see now in the game. I swear that a Nintendo employee was going to look at those locations to move them, and was surprised to the star locations were moved already.
it may be like the bonus screens, its hidden offscreen until you need to use it. After you complete that planet's mission, it's possible that it teleports to its proper location.
That's the one I subscribed to your channel for actually. The dusty dunes galaxy was my favorite. I didn't have hacking tools though, but I think I did the jumping off the tower thing, once upon a time (it would've been somewhere between 2014 and 2016, since 2015 is when I beat the game since I went onto my wii for a nostalgi trip recently, and wiis record that stuff) (I wanna buy a capture card to get the reward photos off) (I got a wired connection adapter, because I thought I could email the "you beat the game" photos to myself, but sadly nay..., so saving up for square one, I digress) (I beat 1 & 2 at about the same times) (My copy of 1 was scratched so I had to use "PowerSaves" [cheating] to get past the first cutscene where it would always freeze; then I went and beat it as Luigi)
There is another unreachable launch star in the Deep Dark Galaxy, however it's location is only reachable with a fly hack. When you spawn in the level, if you fly to the northeastern direction, about 45 degrees or so, then the launch star will come into view. If you use it, you will fly to a death barrier. Then it respawns you in space above the galaxy, until you fall into a perpetual loop forever, so you have to quit out of the level. This applies for every level in that galaxy.
if you turn on infinite flight in the galaxy games from a cheats menu the game becomes open world and it becomes the most AMAZING thing you have EVER seen. you can fly around to parts of the map where you werent supposed to and learn that literally EVERYTHING has collision detection.
As a game dev many objects within games are created at an origin point of a map before being moved, either during level creation or even during the loading of the level itself. So I'd lean towards your first theory.
Have you checked out if this star isn't maybe waiting for someone who destroys the plant? Maybe it teleports to that position after destroying the plant. Nice video!
That launch star is the launch star that appears on the planet when developers need things to appear they just place the star somewhere out of sight and when it’s needed it moves to where they need it.
Or mabeye when the launch star appears from killing the pokey thingy (don’t know the name) the other one disappears. This makes since bc u didn’t see the star when you went from the planet with the pokey thing to the other planet
Helpful tip for those who don't want to sit through the sponsorship messages: The L key (or double tapping the right side of the screen on most phones) skips ahead 10 seconds in the video
I just got home from church, I hope that everyone is having a blessed day. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go grab some water and eat some fish.🧡😊🧡

You can see the shadow of the launch star at 4:40
"something else has caught my EYE" nice pun
Your smg videos are my favourite! Specially with the music you chose! Keep making these!!!
I like how you use Bill Cipher to represent "reverse gravity" at 7:02. Very cheeky Gravity Falls reference!
Dragon city is the game where they stick wings on literally anything and call it a dragon. Ice cream, ice cube, a pepper...literally just objects with wings and faces slapped on. It's hilarious.
The fact that people still play this game in 2019 just shows how truly great it is
I still play it 😂
The kind of spare quiet music and landscapes with a giant planet in the background that's nearly featureless makes this galaxy look so bizarre- almost unfinished.
Alternate theory: the launch star is just stored there until you spawn it properly for whatever reason
That music in the background is the sound of childhood
@SwankyBox If I recall correctly, the light beam on a launch star only appears after you've used it at least once and we are able to see it in your footage. I might just be remembering this incorrectly, though.
how to make a popular game:
1. just put anything into the game
2. put a unused object
3. done!

Think we wouldn't see that League reference
Wrong
Kai'sa best ADC
Thank god for normal content again on here.
SwankyBox taking names, and breaking games
I miss this game😭
It's most likely that that's the same warpstar that appears during the mission when you play normally. Usually assets have to be on the map so the game can call them when they're needed. It's likely that warp star is just called into play when you activate it.
It sounds like you started to say “sponsorships help a lot” but in the moment switch to “a ton”
Damn it! Why didn't I skip the Dragon City sponsorship!
FBI OPEN UP because you want to support him as a creator
Ah yes, because keeping the video playing during that one minute will earn him money, because that's how sponsorships work.
In grandmaster galaxy, you can see more than just that launch star. In early sections, you can see tons of loaded entities in unloaded sections. Just look back.
Since the launch star has the same path as the one from the planet you were on, my theory is that it IS that launch star, and is teleported into position when the plant is killed.

holy shit I just realized how accurately SMG predicted what black holes would look like
It's crazy how many things don't get caught in the testing of the game before the release. Really goes to show that despite their best efforts, devs will always make some mistakes or forget to remove something (they're only human).
Big respect to game devs; we love you guys❤
I just finished replaying this game for the first time since I was a kid to 121 stars, so I'm liking this video series about Mario Galaxy.
So excited for part 2!!!!
That's the one I subscribed to your channel for actually.
The dusty dunes galaxy was my favorite.
I didn't have hacking tools though, but I think I did the jumping off the tower thing, once upon a time (it would've been somewhere between 2014 and 2016, since 2015 is when I beat the game since I went onto my wii for a nostalgi trip recently, and wiis record that stuff)
(I wanna buy a capture card to get the reward photos off)
(I got a wired connection adapter, because I thought I could email the "you beat the game" photos to myself, but sadly nay..., so saving up for square one, I digress)
(I beat 1 & 2 at about the same times)
(My copy of 1 was scratched so I had to use "PowerSaves" [cheating] to get past the first cutscene where it would always freeze; then I went and beat it as Luigi)
The dislikes are from people that have somehow managed to reach the launch star.
I think it’s something from a previous route that was forgotten to be deleted, that does happen sometimes
There is also a launch star similar to this way out in the void in Deep Dark Galaxy. Using it just kills Mario. Very interesting stuff.
Talk about Mario sunshine.
0:02 I love this for some reason
This is super interesting! Awesome video!
Or mabeye when the launch star appears from killing the pokey thingy (don’t know the name) the other one disappears. This makes since bc u didn’t see the star when you went from the planet with the pokey thing to the other planet
Helpful tip for those who don't want to sit through the sponsorship messages:
The L key (or double tapping the right side of the screen on most phones) skips ahead 10 seconds in the video
I gotta theory: this star is moved from that location to the size-shifting planet and for some reason wasn't put under the sand like the eyes were.
Your attention to detail is astonishing! I would never have noticed that!
I just got home from church, I hope that everyone is having a blessed day. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go grab some water and eat some fish.🧡😊🧡
