For me it's not the fear of the endless void, it's the fear of not knowing what's out there. You know there's nothing but you feel like there is and that's what put's you on edge.
I agree with your sentiment. This reminds me of a particular aspect of human nature: the fear of the unknown. What does this have to do with anything, you may ask? Well, I believe it is a contributing factor to the fear some of us get from seemingly infinite spaces. As you've suggested, we don't know what may lie out in the horizon. Even though these seemingly endless voids probably have nothing of interest beyond what the human eye can see, we still feel as if there should be something waiting for us.
Im not scared of there being nothing beyond what we can see I'm scared of there being something Something bigger than our world, something beyond our vision that we couldn't even comprehend Maybe something staring us right in the face, but so otherworldly out brains can't comprehend or see it
This legit might be scarier than anything you’ve covered on your channel The fact that theres just infinite marios, all stuck in the same box doing the same thing forever, is truly unsettling
A few notes... the skull never served any purpose, it never had an origin, it never had a point to exist. The audio effects whenever Mario spoke were very cool, but they also had no reason to be there. You could argue it was the infinite voices of Mario speaking, but then why are all the voices different? He says at the end that the infinite worlds are the same. Finally, the hanged Marios gimmick felt as juvenile as Sonic exe, but at least _that_ had some kind of ending/payoff at the end when we come to realise that they were probably from those other realities and Mario's memory was somehow linked to all the other versions of himself. The lingering shots were far too long and had me checking the video to make sure it was still playing in a couple of instances and took away any uneasiness it had built because I simply wondered when it was going to move on. The scenes... I don't know how they specifically knew to activate but a couple of times it looked like you needed to stand in very specific places for a little while and if that's the case, that's kind of bad because it means you're unlikely to find those specific scenes. However, the scenes themselves were beautifully rendered, absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the animation was creepy as hell. Overall, solid props to the creator of the romhack, and I hope they continue to create and improve~ Oh and the idea was... _stellar_
The things that make me scared is that this rom hack is really different than the other. It's not about screamer or bloody things : all is about the atmosphere. The atmosphere maked me uncomfortable, I turn my phone many times because of it I freaking love this idea of rom hack, people should do more rom hack like that

Ima attempt explain what i think is happening here Mario, one day for some unknown reason, realized the infinite nature of the skybox and wanted to see what was beyond that infinity After prying around, throughout this playthrough After heading up to the back of the castle and seeing the world completely cut off, he realized he was in a game, mario wanted out, he wanted out of the box, and somehow, he saw outsude of it and saw what we see in the end, other worlds, exactly the same I believe these to be other save files, other games, each with their own mario, marios that have been through this exact same thing Clearly mirrors have some importance, and i believe the mirrors let mario see glimpses into these other worlds, and he usually sees marios hanging themselves This is where i believe the wolf skull comes in My theories are either that it was the first mario that broke free, due to it wearing marios hat several times, or the more likely theory, that wolf skull is part of the game, a sort of anti virus protection system, meant to stop the marios from breaking free The marios can only see the skull when they break free, because its outside of the world And i believe when the marios see outside of their world, theyre able to see this skull, and seeing this skull causes them to hang themselves Notice how our mario never looks directly at the skull except for 1 time, at the snowmans land painting, and immediately after seeing it, that mario hangs itself I believe the mario after that point to be a new one, possibly one that remembers the "last playthrough," where it saw the skull and hung itself This mario somehow remembers, and never looks at the wolf skull, knowing what will happen if he does This wasnt supposed to happen, its a glitch, thats why mario is glitching (when he turns blue or his model spazzes out) Now theres one more thing that caught my eye, marios voice Qhats interesting is theres 2 voices 1 deep and echoey voice, and 1 light voice very desynced from the other, a voice that sounds like marios official voice Now it seems cheep and im not saying this is the case, but its possible that theres some classic someone died and possessed a video game character shenanigans, with someone possessing this specific mario, the deep voice being his and the other voice being marios Its very likely that thats why this mario can remember Theres only 1 peice of evidence for this When mario dies in the fountain the deep voice says "nothing is reternal" but we dont hear the other lighter voice, qhich makes sense because mario is dead in the water This could be false but i just think it fits, theres just something about the voice that just stands out to me But thats my interpretation of this rom hack I may be very wrong but i may be very right This is just my theory of whats really going on, as ive not seen anyone else talk about whats really happening But if love to see your theories and opinions on if i was right or wrong in the replies 😊

@@DarkArtistKaiser quick update, apparently is a grey fox skull as theft said and it means mental awareness and seeing through deception so is more fitting than a deer skull, my bad
The rabbit skull. The rabbit is commonly a timid creature, who runs away from danger. The rabbit skull symbolizes running from infinity, which is impossible. Running from infinity will get you nowhere and will feast on your life force until you are a husk of your former self. Once you have expended your life force, you will die, and feel the sweet embrace of infinity, the same thing you ran from. Infinity is nothing to be afraid of, as it is very forgiving. for one to embrace infinity, they will just need to acknowledge that there is no escape from it.
"The one who succeeds in killing the Chainsaw will be me! The one and only Eternity Devil!" Honestly, the way Mario talks reminds me of the Eternity Devil as well
the term "infinite" is exaggerated by some, infinite but not quite. beyond is infinite but intended to be "not" infinite, when you look at a void of "nothing" there's something in there. when you look there's nothing, but in another way there's something. our mind cannot comprehend what's there and that terrifies us, the worst thing tho is knowing there's something there. sometimes the "void" is the "life without a life", that means that the life we know it has no life beyond it. as you look up in the sky you see a void, but beyond that void is something. and that something is nothing. "a life without a life"
Understanding the concepts of infinity, nothingness, and the void can be formidable due to their inherent complexity. However, one can approach these ideas from an alternative perspective to gain a deeper understanding: Infinity: Although the term "infinity" is often misused, rigorous mathematical and philosophical frameworks have provided precise definitions for it. These definitions serve as essential tools for comprehending concepts that transcend our immediate experience. Nothingness: According to modern physics, true "nothingness" may not actually exist. Seemingly empty space is pervaded by quantum fluctuations and fields, challenging our conventional notions of emptiness. Comprehension: While these concepts may be difficult to grasp intuitively, human understanding of the nature of the universe has made significant progress through scientific and mathematical endeavors. Our minds, albeit limited, have demonstrated remarkable adaptability in grasping abstract ideas. Life and meaning: The belief that life lacks meaning without continuation is a philosophical position rather than a universal truth. Many individuals find profound meaning in finite existence, emphasizing the quality and impact of life rather than its duration. The unknown: The vastness of the cosmos can be daunting; yet, it has also sparked curiosity, exploration, and scientific progress. Instead of being solely a source of fear, the unknown can also serve as a source of motivation and fascination.
I like how the game doesn’t just throw fear at you, it immerses you in it. I mean, most games use jump scares to startle you, like: BOO! I scared you, didn’t I? But I love this kind of game that instills fear in such a way that you become paranoid, even when there isn’t anything overtly ‘scary’. It’s more about making you feel very uncomfortable. (I also thanks bing copilot of correcting my horrible french's grammar)
The genre of horror games occupies a broad spectrum, encompassing immersive psychological experiences as well as meticulously crafted jump scares. Some games adeptly build tension through atmosphere and narrative, strategically employing jump scares to punctuate the experience, while others focus on instilling paranoia and psychological dread. It's important to recognize that different players seek varying experiences from horror games. Some appreciate the gradual build-up of psychological horror, while others desire the adrenaline rush of sudden frights. The effectiveness of horror in games ultimately hinges on execution rather than a rigid adherence to a specific style. An approach that harmoniously combines elements of both, resulting in a diverse and unpredictable horror experience, may hold the key to the ultimate horror gaming experience.
The camera locking creepiness reminds me of how it always bothered me in Ocarina of Time that certain areas had locked camera perspective. Then I learn years later that it's because you are standing in a blank greenscreen void with basic collision and a 2 dimensional photo suspended in the distance in front of the camera to give the illusion of you being in that space.
The scariest part about this is that it was *Lakitu* filming all of this… but… how was he not even terrified? I mean… Mario was having an existential crisis but Lakitu? He was… strangely calm. Another thing that feels weirder than scary, is that those skull creatures seem to be enormous flying creatures… and why did they keep following Mario…? Did they want something from him? If so what did they want from him? And how did Mario respawn so many times even after *dying* …? … This freaks me out
I totally get the whole fear of infinite spaces and voids in video games, especially the skyboxes from the first Mario Galaxy evoked that feeling with how grand scale they are. Firing up the noclip website once and flying away from Beach Bowl Galaxy, getting stuck in the infinite cloudy void and not being able to find the galaxy again freaked me out. But the game that has evoked this feeling the mot to me in recent times has to be the first Xenoblade. The game is set on two dead titans, the Bionis and Mechonis, that stand in a large ocean. The game is spent on both titans and you can't go into the ocean because the water is toxic. In general, the game is very big on scale and you can always see parts of the titans looming in the skybox overhead. But you can also look out into the infinite nothing and may notice the sun never sets or rises, it just turns off and on with the day/night cycle. When you climb to one of the highest point on the Bionis, this is also questioned and the true scale of the ocean is revealed: "Please tell Riki. What is behind Mechonis?" "Behind Mechonis? I don’t know... Just the sea and the sky, I guess. At least that’s what I've been told." [...] "Heropon Riki want to travel round whole world after fighting finish!" "Why bother? You’ll be a wrinkled old geezer before you find anything. [...] Listen... I spoke to a navigator once. He said that even if you travel at the speed of light for 100 years... You won’t find a speck of land." The ocean is about 50 times as big as the solar system, and it just keeps going. The ocean is once again addressed in a late-game cutscene: "Have you never thought about it? Never contemplated about what lies beyond this world?" "Beyond this world? [Spoiler] once said that aside from the Bionis and the Mechonis, this world is filled with nothing but boundless ocean." "But what lies beyond that? We are still young and unable the Bionis or the Mechonis. Say goodbye to our creators, our world. But one day our descendants will. They will leave this place and depart for new worlds. Worlds we have never imagined." The conversation turns triumphant and hopeful near the end with the idea they will once visit new worlds, but the first part always struck me as very haunting and I felt a big sense of dread. These people are trapped in a liminal hell world for thousands of years, unable to leave their homes behind for there is nothing but the titans and the ocean. When seeing the final creepy cutscene of this hack in this video, I was reminded of this particular cutscene.
17:00, quietly writes this incredibly catchy song just for this video. Incredible! Or wait, maybe you lifted it from Homestar Runner. But that's so old, how would anyone catch that.
"Infinite prisons... and they're all exactly the same." Holy shit. I think the implication being made is that, everytime Mario dies, the result isn't the clock being rewound to before you entered the level so you can try again - it's Mario getting thrown out into a different universe where he hasn't died yet. Even getting a Game Over just returns you, the player, back to the menu; once you return to the game, nothing has changed. No matter how many times Mario dies, there's no escaping the Super Mario 64 multiverse. He's stuck there forever. That is some dark shit.
As you can clearly see, Peach’s castle is haunted not only by Bowser and Wario, but also by Bowser’s former apprentice, whose vengeful spirit stands firm in Mario’s way to each of the 120 stars, Bowser In The Sky, Queen Peach, and the cake she promised to bake for Mario.
that part about the camera not being able to turn around all the way gave me chills. in epic minigames, if you glitch out the camera on certain minigames where it is normally locked to one direction and look into the sky there is, I kid you not, a giant deer skull in the sky staring at you. that first happened to me months ago and it jumpscared the crap out of me 😭
ok so first, the song at the end is "Everyday is Exactly The Same" by Nine Inch Nails (way creepier here tho of course) 2nd, what is the skull? what animal does it belong to?
A captivating exploration of an unsettling video game hack. The video adeptly delves into the juxtaposition of childhood nostalgia and horror, skillfully employing glitches and disquieting imagery to cultivate an atmosphere of unease. The concept of leveraging a beloved game to evoke fears of the unknown and infinity is truly ingenious, deftly subverting familiar elements into something alien. The analysis of game worlds as ultimately illusory adds a layer of disquiet. Overall, this material presents an exceptional study of psychological horror through the use of simple yet impactful techniques. It would be of interest to delve further into the specific methods employed to achieve this eerie atmosphere.
That’s the thing with 3D games like this: making a horror ROM is a lot harder, so you’ll have people who are more mature and experienced doing it thus it won’t be as cringe or cheesy.

@@freshinaba22763 Fun fact, parallel universes do exist within SM64
Overall, solid props to the creator of the romhack, and I hope they continue to create and improve~

@@myleswelnetz6700 i was gonna make a separate comment on this what if the skull is bowsers head. Since Mario and bowser were actually nice to each other like you said. When mario defeated him over and over again bowsers skull just appeared and keepd following mario because he misses him.
Ima attempt explain what i think is happening here
Mario, one day for some unknown reason, realized the infinite nature of the skybox and wanted to see what was beyond that infinity
After prying around, throughout this playthrough
After heading up to the back of the castle and seeing the world completely cut off, he realized he was in a game, mario wanted out, he wanted out of the box, and somehow, he saw outsude of it and saw what we see in the end, other worlds, exactly the same
I believe these to be other save files, other games, each with their own mario, marios that have been through this exact same thing
Clearly mirrors have some importance, and i believe the mirrors let mario see glimpses into these other worlds, and he usually sees marios hanging themselves
This is where i believe the wolf skull comes in
My theories are either that it was the first mario that broke free, due to it wearing marios hat several times, or the more likely theory, that wolf skull is part of the game, a sort of anti virus protection system, meant to stop the marios from breaking free
The marios can only see the skull when they break free, because its outside of the world
And i believe when the marios see outside of their world, theyre able to see this skull, and seeing this skull causes them to hang themselves
Notice how our mario never looks directly at the skull except for 1 time, at the snowmans land painting, and immediately after seeing it, that mario hangs itself
I believe the mario after that point to be a new one, possibly one that remembers the "last playthrough," where it saw the skull and hung itself
This mario somehow remembers, and never looks at the wolf skull, knowing what will happen if he does
This wasnt supposed to happen, its a glitch, thats why mario is glitching (when he turns blue or his model spazzes out)
Now theres one more thing that caught my eye, marios voice
Qhats interesting is theres 2 voices
1 deep and echoey voice, and 1 light voice very desynced from the other, a voice that sounds like marios official voice
Now it seems cheep and im not saying this is the case, but its possible that theres some classic someone died and possessed a video game character shenanigans, with someone possessing this specific mario, the deep voice being his and the other voice being marios
Its very likely that thats why this mario can remember
Theres only 1 peice of evidence for this
When mario dies in the fountain the deep voice says "nothing is reternal" but we dont hear the other lighter voice, qhich makes sense because mario is dead in the water
This could be false but i just think it fits, theres just something about the voice that just stands out to me
But thats my interpretation of this rom hack
I may be very wrong but i may be very right
This is just my theory of whats really going on, as ive not seen anyone else talk about whats really happening
But if love to see your theories and opinions on if i was right or wrong in the replies 😊
I think there's a lot of good stuff here. Look up Mario 64 QPUs.

Theft king: no I am trapped in another void place! Where are my stars! ( casually starts talking about Halo 2 )
the term "infinite" is exaggerated by some, infinite but not quite.
beyond is infinite but intended to be "not" infinite, when you look at a void of "nothing" there's something in there.
when you look there's nothing, but in another way there's something.
our mind cannot comprehend what's there and that terrifies us, the worst thing tho is knowing there's something there.
sometimes the "void" is the "life without a life", that means that the life we know it has no life beyond it.
as you look up in the sky you see a void, but beyond that void is something.
and that something is nothing.
"a life without a life"
Understanding the concepts of infinity, nothingness, and the void can be formidable due to their inherent complexity. However, one can approach these ideas from an alternative perspective to gain a deeper understanding:
Infinity: Although the term "infinity" is often misused, rigorous mathematical and philosophical frameworks have provided precise definitions for it.
Mario: “I’ve been here before.” “Why am I doing this again?”
Me: Because I’m trying to do a speedrun now stop breaking the 4th wall.
these animations mid game really leave you with a chillingly surreal feeling.
The fear of infinity, isn't you fearing infinity itself. It's fearing WHAT could be in the infinity, or WHO could be in the infinity.
Edit: Grammer
Yeah I remember coming to that exact realization as a kid.

…
This freaks me out
He never respawned
There's infinite universes, which means infinite Mario's
The only thing that scared me more than the infinite void that they was no forth wall, they didn’t break it their just was no forty wall
This has no right to be this fuckin' UNSETTLING, holy hell. Great vid, man, but DAMN. Hope y'all can sleep better than I will
I totally get the whole fear of infinite spaces and voids in video games, especially the skyboxes from the first Mario Galaxy evoked that feeling with how grand scale they are.
When you climb to one of the highest point on the Bionis, this is also questioned and the true scale of the ocean is revealed:
"Please tell Riki. What is behind Mechonis?"
"Behind Mechonis? I don’t know... Just the sea and the sky, I guess. At least that’s what I've been told."
[...]
"Heropon Riki want to travel round whole world after fighting finish!"
"Why bother? You’ll be a wrinkled old geezer before you find anything. [...] Listen... I spoke to a navigator once. He said that even if you travel at the speed of light for 100 years... You won’t find a speck of land."
The ocean is about 50 times as big as the solar system, and it just keeps going. The ocean is once again addressed in a late-game cutscene:
"Have you never thought about it? Never contemplated about what lies beyond this world?"
"Beyond this world? [Spoiler] once said that aside from the Bionis and the Mechonis, this world is filled with nothing but boundless ocean."
"But what lies beyond that? We are still young and unable the Bionis or the Mechonis. Say goodbye to our creators, our world. But one day our descendants will. They will leave this place and depart for new worlds. Worlds we have never imagined."
The conversation turns triumphant and hopeful near the end with the idea they will once visit new worlds, but the first part always struck me as very haunting and I felt a big sense of dread. These people are trapped in a liminal hell world for thousands of years, unable to leave their homes behind for there is nothing but the titans and the ocean. When seeing the final creepy cutscene of this hack in this video, I was reminded of this particular cutscene.
They're not infinite prisons. You just need to align your QPUs correctly and then you can break free and go anywhere!
Anywhere... as long as it's a perfect duplicate of the same exact place you were already in.
When you’re playing mario 64 but mario and a giant gaster blaster in the background is haunting you.
17:00, quietly writes this incredibly catchy song just for this video. Incredible!
Or wait, maybe you lifted it from Homestar Runner. But that's so old, how would anyone catch that.
"Infinite prisons... and they're all exactly the same."
Holy shit.
As you can clearly see, Peach’s castle is haunted not only by Bowser and Wario, but also by Bowser’s former apprentice, whose vengeful spirit stands firm in Mario’s way to each of the 120 stars, Bowser In The Sky, Queen Peach, and the cake she promised to bake for Mario.
that part about the camera not being able to turn around all the way gave me chills. in epic minigames, if you glitch out the camera on certain minigames where it is normally locked to one direction and look into the sky there is, I kid you not, a giant deer skull in the sky staring at you. that first happened to me months ago and it jumpscared the crap out of me 😭
ok so first, the song at the end is "Everyday is Exactly The Same" by Nine Inch Nails (way creepier here tho of course)
2nd, what is the skull? what animal does it belong to?
It is probably a Canine skull.
Gray Fox.
Good catch on the song.
Yoshi mabye?
@@theftking why... A gray fox tho.
squeeks definetly taught you the moshing effect☠️
True
"i heard you goomba"
lmao omg i cant believe he went there😂
but whats up w/ the wolf skull, that feels outta left field
Thanks, this might of had actually given me the fear of the void 💀
I'm Digging These Creepypastas That Sometimes Replace Your Regular Videos.

There's something deeply artistic about this.
20:18 help why did he do a MatPat out of context moment for a sec😭
That’s the thing with 3D games like this: making a horror ROM is a lot harder, so you’ll have people who are more mature and experienced doing it thus it won’t be as cringe or cheesy.

This scene is unsettling in many ways, but the Castle theme playing for a brief moment made me laugh
