    I am 81 yr. old and I used to take a lot of short cuts when I was welding-tacking and grinding. So the only way to say this is ( Safety is always first, shortcuts are very long cuts if you are injured or lose an eye or a limb, God forbid. Always use jack stands before climbing under any auto or truck. I do not want to see any of you hurt or injured. I enjoy your videos, and your knowledge to much to lose them. Only an old man trying to pass some real knowledge.

      If only older men could tell younger men things and they would always listen with the gravity they should! But they won't until... It's just the way it is and has been since Christ was a cowboy, unfortunately...

      @MadeinTN Hard learned lessons are well learned lessons, but losing an eye or a finger or worse is too hard a lesson to learn if you can avoid it. But what do I know? I was one of those young fellas that actually listened to older guys, especially if they were missing a finger or an eye! :)

      Fred Chase great comments, unfortunately in this age wisdom is shrugged off as ‘safety Sally’ by this generation, they have to find out the hard way unfortunately. Grinders without guards, no PPE (eye protection, boots, log pants and sleeves, dust masks etc) it’s all ‘too hard’.
      These channels have a chance to set a standard yet prefer to look cool, mess around and take short cuts. It’s the ‘young... I am bullet proof mentality’. Us old and more experienced can save them time and pain and possibly stop them killing them selves if only they would not be to proud to listen.

    Good idea to wear safety glasses when using the drill press, so that you don't get bits of metal in your eye. You should also be using hearing protection when using power tools, because over time you will damage your hearing. Take it from someone who's been there, done that.

    About the rollcage, i'm not an expert or a fabricator, but i've watched a lot of builds and i know that you shouldn't bolt a rollcage to sheet metal floor on a car, you should make a base plate/box with stronger metal, weld it to the car and then bolt the rollcage to that base plate/box

    @JohnSmith-pi4ju 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heaps safer than not having a roll cage. Before you paint it you could consider adding a properly positioned harness bar. Ideally it will be higher than your shoulders so that your spine is not compressed during an impact. You will also find that positioning it at least 6 or 8 inches behind the main hoop provides room for the harness mounting and adjustment hardware.
    You did say that the horizontal bar that you installed is the mounting point for your harness, but if you test fit a seat and harness you will be able to see if the existing horizontal bar is high enough or far enough back to satisfy the requirements that I mentioned.

    I figured that you would have drilled a large hole in the plates for the roll cage to fit in and then weld it on top and bottom. I would think that would have given it more rigidity because the cage would be in between the plate itself also.

    @jameshosta9382 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Ben, regarding the strength and protection the roll cage has to have... It's best to bolt or weld it to the frame not the floor pan. Also, check the support design nascar uses to ensure the driver is fully protected in a roll over. Right now you have no driver door protection and integrity strength on the right side. Build it to withstand a high speed impact and rollover that will save your life.

    Most Racing clubs require the main hoop diagonal to be one piece bar that goes all the way from the upper corner to the opposite lower corner of the cage. The shoulder harness bars are the ones that are cut. The diagonal bar is very important if you roll your car. But if you aren't planning on racing it really isn't a big concern (you'd be in a ridiculous expensive racing class anyway, having the V8 swap).

      No, it doesn't. You can have as much as 20 degrees of downward angle from your shoulders to the mounting point and you'd still be safe. Stop spreading misinformation.

    I don't want to sound like "that guy", but dude wear some safety glasses with that plasma torch. I know a guy that has one super messed up eye (looks like a white eyeball with a black jelly bean in it) and he can't see anything out of it, all cause he caught a piece of slag from a plasma torch in it

  • @ibidu1

    For your first cage its not bad, but your measurments for the main loop you could have come a bit tighter to the body. Also those rear arms that attach to the trunk metal, I would redo that and have the two bars go under to the rear tubs. Ive actually built a full 6 point cage for e30, if you plan to just keep it as a roll bar then the main hoop is fine. But if you do a roll cage with 6 points you will have trouble with that loop too small for the upper legs. You can get away with building a roof U bar to the hoop and then put the legs on that.

    here is a small suggestion for the roll cage, make the rear part (where the rear seat was) bolt on, it could make your job allot easier, removing it and even powder coating it...

    I would absolutely put on the wide M3 fenders on this project. Dont do generic fender flares. If you want to go really wide cut the M3 fenders and weld in some extra strips.
