We need a big movie made for Rick to soundtrack. Or a series called the The Last Man on Earth, where a guy wanders around the empty planet having adventures and encountering mutated animals each week, whilst he pieces together what happened to the rest of the population. In the final episode he could find an underground city/bunker with thousands of other survivors and title credits could roll as he breaks down in tears!
I have a playlist with some "calm" songs that play during prerace, a song with the bpm I am looking for around the start of the race, and some higher intensity songs to play leading up to my expected finish time. Plotting out a playlist has been a game changer for me and my marathons.
Amazing to hear Sarah has a show tunes playlist - would love to hear more songs from it! I’ve tinkered with one but can never find enough songs with that driving beat so just sprinkle in some slow anthems in my playlist (“This Is The Moment”, “Climb Every Mountain”) as motivators 😬
I actually live in València and will volunteer for this year's race. I've spoken to people from affected towns and heard both sides. So I guess whatever you heart tells you is fine.
For me I absolutely love the idea of marathon records being broken by men and women and that it keeps going down - especially this year. Great podcast, thank you!
The recovery benefit of super shoes is insane. I ran my first half-marathon 2 months ago in a normal pair of running shoes. I was achey for 5 days afterwards, and felt fatigued for a full 2 weeks after the race. I ran my 2nd half-marathon on Sunday past in a pair of super shoes. I went nearly 10 minutes quicker in significantly worse conditions (The storm at the weekend had torrential rain and 60mph winds at the race), so the shoes made me faster, clearly. But what is more crazy is that 2 days later, I feel absolutely fine. I feel better than I normally do the day after a typical long run, even though I ran a full race-effort just 2 days ago. I'm playing 5-a-side football later, and feel so good that I'm going to jog 4k there and 4k back. I couldn't have imagined they'd make this much difference to my recovery, but it's night-and-day compared to normal shoes.
I have a running playlist of around 70 songs which I chop and change every so often. Some songs are constant but most I rotate out after a few months. On a proper race day I always listen to “Warrant” by Foster the People at the race start. I find it really gets me into the zone
You mentioned about the kids in super shoes. I think you need to take a deep dive into the class issue in sports. Football is one of the few sports where working class kids are able to rise to the top. In most others, it’s middle and upper class kids. How much money did it cost Andy’s parents to drive him to races as a kid? How much does it cost parents in 2024. I’m sure I’ve read that a majority (over 50%) of British Olympians are privately educated, despite only 7%of kids going to a fee paying school. Come on! Don’t be afraid of class politics and discuss this issue openly. How do you overcome the handicap of poverty in sport in Britain?
(tl;dr: agreed on the "class" divide, but "class" translates more directly to "wealth" now.) State school kid here (well, decades ago). - the schools were forced to sell off their playing fields because the councils were broke. - the teachers had a labour dispute so there no extra-curricular activities, I don't think they've ever recovered. - the funding for PE teachers was so low they had to run classes with 50+ pupils at a time. This meant everything was mass football, rugby or hockey, no individual sports. I threw a javelin once in my entire school life. And so on.
Great listen as always! Just on the kids running in super shoes though, do you think at that level they’re going to make that big a difference? In younger groups I’m guessing the talent gap is a lot wider whereas super shoes are more about the margins.
I read with the 100m sprint that being a moderate height is preferable because it's the best ratio between leg length and leg turnover and that is why Bolt was such a freak because he had the height and then also had the insane turnover that you normally can't get at his height. So actually being really tall is an advantage but you need to have freakish leg turnover which most people don't have.
I was doing the Wirral Ultra and gave Andy a nod, then some time later he shot past me🏃I can now claim I've run along side an Olympic runner, if only for a second.😁
A you-tube video I watched showed some research about how much speed the supershoes add - iirc the conclusion was that it was about 1:30 over the marathon. The video also concluded that this was about half the reduction in record over the relevant time period. So, perhaps it's not all technology? Looks like more research would be interesting...
For me The Berkley Marathons has to be where the records get exciting... Given the very very tiny proportion of finishers it remains nail biting exciting and also distance records... Tip of the ice burg x
Yeah you can see on some of these TH-camr videos of running in primark or aldi shoes and they're like 30 seconds of their normal km pace 😅 even a non plated shoe like the superblast have come on so much. I hold back my plated shoe for race day.
Definitely your best podcast to date. Not the usual amount of banter which I prefer and even Sarah was not as overbearing as usual. Very professional Sarah! Also I love the longer format. Let's get it to 60 minutes.
What's with Rick's colour saturation compared to Sarah and Andy? Is it a lighting issue, or is it a health issue he needs to get checked out!...no one should be that pink 😂
Yeah, about the running channel club. The last update I got was over two weeks ago thanking me again and saying I'm really really really on the waitlist. I'm getting the feeling like I'm in line to get into a posh night club and waiting at the velvet rope while other "cooler" people keep getting let in.
Oh no, this doesn’t sound right, you definitely should have had your invite by now - please can you check your spam folder and failing that, drop a quick email to club@therunningchannel.com and we’ll sort it out ASAP!
I went to Spotify. "Rick Kelsey - 6 monthly listeners", it says. So, quite a fan club.
19 on TH-cam music . :)
@@jubalmj I genuinely thought you meant the song about the Vietnam war before I realised...
1,144 now!
There is no beginning to Rick's talent! 😂
😂😂

Love the conversation. Keep em long.
"You're the Best Around" by Joe Esposito. "Karate Kid" Soundtrack
Another great episode! Thanks guys :)

And I agree with Sarah that musical theater provides great sound tracks for training runs. 🙂

Thanks Rick the sales of Gavi gone up in my shop.👍 😂😂😂😂

Send the kids without super shoes to texas. But yeah it's why so many US college kids win olympic medals.
Longer podcast please 😁. I listen on my long run and it’s over much too soon.
Eryri isn’t a mountain it’s a range (Snowdonia). Snowdon’s welsh name is Yr Wyddfa, or the Wyddfa. Pronounced something like withva.

James Brown's "I Feel Good" is great for late in a workout or race. :-)
Please we need more skin scare ❤😂❤ I'd love a pre/post run rituals as well ❤
I think you are all forgetting about the porridge topping classic brown sugar.
Yes! Do Brits not eat brown sugar on porridge? Maybe it is more an Aussie thing.
It's not a common one for us!

Yes you have!!
Interesting to see behind the curtain. Rick’s hand signals on camera 😂. Also, cooling himself with the script 🔥
haha glad you like seeing it all!

Seeing maple syrup described as the expensive option when it’s $30 for a years worth where I live is so funny.
Will we be seeing Rick Kelsey lugging his guitar around the open mics of hilly North London? 😊
haha we hope so!

The best 'musical theatre' style singer is Lucy Thomas. Does Sarah listen to her? She has 6 CD's worth of music.
I’m curious what Bill Rodger’s could have done in a pair of super shoes.
Rick is unfortunately competing with Wolf Alice for the number one 'The Last Man On Earth' and theirs is amazing
Rick, What is your favourite Richard Marx song? I like Endless Summer Nights and Angelia. I'm only 29 but you cannot beat an 80s ballad. Rock on!
He said Endless Summer Nights too! 🎉
Podcasts and audiobooks only for me. I have to run pulse rate limited due to heart issues and the last thing I need is more adrenaline from the music.
I put natural peanut butter in my oatmeal. It is way better than any of the sugary additives.
Guns N Roses are making a new record? ❤
Is this the 100min 100th podcast?
Given some women's WRs are 40 years old should they be removed from the record books?
Why?
Cleanliness!
Should have went for 5 past 2 as ur xmas hit number, as ur very good at hitting that target 😅😅
There was a lot of cheating in the 80’s, I don’t think that has changed. Especially when $ is at stake.

Love Rick, but don’t your sponsors have rules about Rick’s songs?
Hahaha it's ok don't worry
@ more worried you’ll lose some😂😂
I don*t realy care for records , I want to see a race
What's your favourite race distance?

I don’t care about world records because you just don’t know who is cheating and who isn’t
