I watch every week, I even go back and watch episodes I missed, I can only put this down to loving the banter because at times I seriously question how much you know about running. Don’t change, it’s great.
I can't tell you the number of times I've laughed out loud on a run or at the gym listening to your podcast. Extremely useful in lifting my mood and motivating my workout. Keep up the banter, it's what makes your podcast great
I had the experience of being one of the last finishers of a race and not getting a medal. It was my first attempt at a longer distance (10 miles) and it was kind of gutting. Thank you Sarah for acknowledging that the people at the end of the race deserve the medals just as much as everyone else.
I listened to this during my run on Sunday and was laughing out loud, I swear people thought I was crazy. I especially likes Rick's asphalt jokes. Keep up the "useless" banter, in a world where everything is so serious I, and I'm sure others, need it.
Steve Cram's voice took me through Couch to 5k which helps so many people, but I didn't really appreciate who he was until the news hit about his record being broken. So glad to hear just how stunned you guys were about him too. What a power house
The banter (useless or otherwise) is exactly why I stick around, it makes running feel accessible. As someone who has never had the courage to start running, this podcast helped me feel confident enough to try last year before getting pregnant, and now as a recently postpartum runner, I’ve signed up for my first half and marathon. I’m eternally grateful for the helpful tips, the relatability, and the bad jokes. Top tier.
Useless banter?! If i want serious, i watch the videos. Podcasts are for entertainment, not seriousness! P.s. Rick, it's nice to take a break every now and then. Absence makes the heart grow fonder after all 😜😂
The physiological expression for nerves and excitement are exactly the same, the only difference is one is associated with fear, the other with joy. Even telling yourself "gah, Im so pumped to be here!", when you're absolutely terrified, already helps! Also, useless banter is what makes podcasts with several hosts stand out! Keep that roast going!
Pressure indeed. I have run Stockholm Marathon 8 times. 7 of those, I was sick beyond belief. I guess it is migraine or something stress related to the task at hand. Oh, and yesterday was no exception. But very, very happy to have reached the goal line. Next year will be an hour faster. Thanks guys, for all the inspiration!
I really appreciate the discussion about pressure as a runner--self-imposed and otherwise. This is probably such a universal sensation for folks across the channel's community, and having tools in the kit to rebalance perspective can make the sport so much more enjoyable, and rewarding.
Sarah has a great point about the medals. A compromise would be to have a large base medal that doesn't change every year, and a smaller dangly tag to hang off of it with the year. People can collect multiples of the large one over years if they want, or opt out and just add the year tag to their existing medal (and perhaps get a slight discount on race entry fee).
When I was at the running show Andy told me all about it and his tactics and I wrote it down why I was scared and crossed off reasons I shouldn’t be in the morning like he said and it really helped I won the next race thank you so much 🎉🎉🎉
This podcast is excellent. You’ve motivated me to get off the couch and start my marathon journey. Be careful calling out 1 star reviews, you’ll encourage other trolls to make negative remarks. All love from Australia.
I really found the section about pressure and Andy's worry list very useful. I struggled with the pressure of my own expectations for a PB in a half marathon in March this year. I will definitely be using this idea next time.
Got to love the banter it is the best bit! My only issue is that you keep letting Ric move you on! I would happily listen to an hour would nicely fit in with a 10k!
Useless banter? On a PODCAST? The HORROR! 😂😂😂 love this stuff! If you don’t want it, then go to a science conference or read a scientific journal out loud?! Like hello?
Got an idea for an event for Rick: the Niesen Mountain Stair Run. In short - up the mountain Niesen is a funicular. Next to it is a stair. As far as I know this is the worlds longest stair. Every year there is a race up it. You can either do it alone or as a two person relay... Rick and Andy would be a good fit I think...😉 Cheers from Switzerland
About the question of drinking before racing, there is club in the States called the "Hash Hound Harriers" who describe themselves as a drinking club with a running problem. Just saying.
Honestly, the banter is what makes the podcast - and you also sprinkle in fun and interesting bits of info, so it's works well. I don't need an uber-serious podcast, there's too much of that already. Also with the Training Effect scores, you might find it interesting that by double ballet class today classified as a 'sprint' with 1.0 aerobic and 1.5 anaerobic. Not as much as with running obvs, but I thought that was neat - there was a lot of fast movement and jumping.
Doing more racing has helped my self-inflicted pressure. Having children and responsibilities it can be hard to find time to attend a race, I would put pressure on myself to do well, as people were going out of their way to babysit for me. I used to shake with nerves for an hour or so before and then feel dread on the start line. Now down to only a slight shake and feel absolutely calm and relaxed on the start line 😅
Would love to talk to you guys about my journey into running as a blind runner at 50 and my quest to try to get a London GFA time. Trying to lobby London Marathon to have para GFA times like some of the other major marathons do but until I can get an answer from them I’m continuing to try to chase the able bodied time. Any help with my lobbying would be gratefully received
I feel as though some amount of pressure is good and in general I think that if you feel pressure, that means you care, which is a good thing. However, think it's important to use it in the right way.
I’ve been running on a treadmill for only a few months now. My 5km PB is 31mins and I’ve run one 10km (1 hour 9 mins). I’m about to do my first 5km park run next week and I’m absolutely bricking it 😂 I just hope I finish (and don’t get lost !!). Any advice to stop be backing out ? ❤️
Where is the undo button? Can't find it on my garmin! The issue i have is that if i use the music feature and it times out, i skip a lap (training step). I WISH i could undo it. I usually have to freestyle a bit. But its really bad when its a large session and i miss like 30 min of easy or something like that.
I've had a Garmin running watch for a week now and I notice that my heart rate gets very high very quickly during runs. In general, I'm heading towards zone 4 or 5 within 10 minutes. I'm still new to running and don't run very long distances yet (between 5 and 10 km), but does anyone have any tips for keeping my heart rate lower during runs?
Did you set your custom heart range info (in case you know your max heart rate etc)? Otherwise it will use default values for your age range and gender and the results might not be accurate to you. (It will adjust over time, but you might want to ignore the zones for a while if you don’t have the info to change it. There are also some runs you can do to get to the right heart rates faster, I believe) If you are sure the results are accurate and you want to stay in a lower heart rate zone I think running slower would be the most likely way to do that. I’ve found that requiring myself to only breathe through nose is the surest way to slow myself down enough to stay in zone 2.
@@sezend7982 Thanks for the advice! I have not customized the heart rate zones. I think now my max heart rate is 220 - my age (default value). I will try a training to find out what my max heart rate really is.
Just putting it out there as a cyclist with Velotoze overshoes it has to be sock, sock, overshoe, overshoe, shoe, shoe, refit overshoe, refit overshoe.
I ended up self medicating my Achilles issues, tried shielding it for a long time and it would hurt whenever I ran. So after some reading and finding out that tendons won't heal unless you put them under pressure, I did micro runs, like 1 mile until it hurt, then over the next couple of days I would walk around on tiptoes and do heel raises while standing about until it stopped hurting then went on another micro run. Basically repeating that and increasing the distance to ride the pain wave to freedom. (Disclaimer: I'm not a health professional!)
Except that lap undo function doesn't undo steps in a planned workout which is where an accidental lap press has a bigger impact. I've gone with disabling the default lap button press and assigned the long press of the same button to the lap function.
Sorry Sarah , but I have to disagree with you which also means I have to agree with Rick about not wanting the same medal every year for doing a race. Each race has its own story which you can link with the medal, so if they all look the same that kind of takes that little part away. I have completed my last marathon (as of now) just last weekend in Buffalo and all 4 times my race went completely different and when I look at each medal, I can go back to that days which is want makes all of them special. On another note, now that you tried a Tough Mudder it's time to try a Spartan Race
Pretty crappy giving a one star review which is basically "I'm not the target audience" I learned a lot from TRC and now largely watch it for entertainment and go elsewhere when I want white boards and graphs etc. Not that the videos aren't informative but I'm in the learning how to program and getting into the nitty gritty phase of running but still watch all of the TRC content.

Andy as you are the boss, After your 1* rating can I try and give you some constructive advice please. For some context I have been watching from the start and still enjoy your channel. I know this is the structure and content for the podcast BUT can you dial Rick and Sarah down a bit as Rick can’t be that dumb and Sarah can’t be that annoying. Obviously it is for the banter and entertainment but get them to dial it back just a touch. P.S. was Ricks last running watch a sundial 🤣

I'm honestly here for the useless banter
Podcasts are basically like pub chats, nobody should be expecting hard science - that’s what the other video are for!
Me too
It’s the best part, and I laugh heartily right along with the cast. The side comments, the quiet jokes - it’s so entertaining lol.
Ugh, I came here for the useless banter and all I got was this in-depth scientific analysis. ONE STAR!
I watch every week, I even go back and watch episodes I missed, I can only put this down to loving the banter because at times I seriously question how much you know about running. Don’t change, it’s great.
Rick, please let them go a little longer. I always listen on my long run and I need as much of you three as I can get!
Haha we'll let him know!
I agree. Don’t understand the necessity to have the podcasts be so short.
Yes I agree if you could do a 3 hour one that would be perfect 😂
I can't tell you the number of times I've laughed out loud on a run or at the gym listening to your podcast. Extremely useful in lifting my mood and motivating my workout. Keep up the banter, it's what makes your podcast great

Did a running race and we got a voucher for a free car wash. Would have preferred a medal!
Wow that’s so random!!
Probably was one of the sponsors of the event.
But yes, weird price. Especially if you, like me, don't own a car...
Omg, undo lap press!! Where have you been all my life? the amount of accidental laps that have slipped through the cracks.... I had no idea!!
hahaha so glad we could help!
At my running club, we buy the medal in bulk but then change the ribbon each yr so that you get that variety
Rick should do a tough mudder
Where is the undo button? Can't find it on my garmin!

Did Andy just say that Cram’s mile record was the first to take it under 3:50? If so, has he forgotten about Ovett and Coe? 😮
Nah he was talking about his running form
Why do race distances go; 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m? Why not 1600m?
Accept it with confidence.
You guys need TRC tshirts with 'Useless Banter' on them 😂
I want to challenge Rick to let us have longer podcasts
Do an indept session on achillestendon rehab
