I’ll always say that what he did with the Jets was one of the finest coaching jobs in NFL history. Took over a team that was 1-15, with things just about as bad as they could possibly get, and had a winning season his first year, and within one game of the Super Bowl his second year. One of the best coaches ever in any sport

1990 is the year I’ll always remember. The 49ers were an unstoppable machine that entire season, going 14-2 and cruising into the playoffs. Joe Montana had arguably his best season ever statistically and was the NFL MVP for the second consecutive season. After watching the Niners dispatch Washington 28-10 in the divisional round in a game that wasn’t even that close, I just thought this team was destined to three-peat. Then they ran into the only team that could stop them, Parcells’ Giants. They not only put a stop to the 49ers potential three-peat, but ended the Joe Montana Era in San Francisco.

Everyone talks about how tough Parcells was, but you can also see a lot of quieter moments in which he used his sense of humor and passion for teaching to connect with guys. That conversation with Larry Allen was a master class in calmly setting a boundary with a respected veteran player. I’m sure he did the same thing with Lawrence Taylor a lot. He knew how to adapt his communication to different situations - he didn’t just yell and scream all the time.

He's a no nonsense type of head coach who doesn't enjoy silly questions from reporters, especially if they're all asking basically the same thing just worded different, or asking questions with obvious answers. A great modern day example would be Greg Popovich.

Belichek tells a great story about himself notifying Parcells that LT was 5 minutes late to the meeting and they had to start without him. Parcells turned to Belichek and said “whyd you start without him?”
There’s also a story about the team getting on the bus and Parcells was getting impatient. He asked why haven’t we left yet and his assistant coaches said “we’re still waiting for some on our players to get on the bus”. I forget who they were playing but let’s say Raiders and he turns around thinking it was LT (notoriously late) and screamed “LT here?” Shockingly, he was and LT said “yes coach, I’m here”. Parcells turned around and said “ok, we can leave now, we’re playing the raiders and LT is all I need”.
I can’t remember what team it was but multiple people (belichek, LT) have told that story.
