I would say it is the same for many of your other subscribers as it is for me, in that, it's really great to get such well informed, practical and usable ideas from a pro producer like yourself, again, really appreciate the time you take to put out all the varied videos which cover so many aspects from, mixing with plugins, DI info, amps and amp miking, mics used within vocal recordings, be it dynamic, condenser, ribbon and the specified areas of mixes, be it toward drums, guitar, bass, vocals or the overall mix itself. I'm spending a lot of time getting a handle on my own projects and it's going great, but always nice to have someone in the know like yourself to open up the ideas further with regard to what else can be done.
Also, big fan of the studio tours!!;-)

Great tutorial Warren. I have watched endless videos on amp miking, and this is the first time I have ever seen anyone mic up the speaker from the back. I loved the sound you got there. I only have a Peavy Viper tube 120 watt. and thought miking was only good w/high gain for best sound. BUT, i followed instructions to the tee and only used a master volume of 2.5w/condenser mics and OMG the tone was much better than DI ! Thanks Warren.(ps..Warren also has great bass recording and mixing tuts too)

Very gifted
For me, my tone is from pedals. I got rid of the amp altogether. Live and in the studio. I run my pedals into a focus rite pre amp. The trick is that I use a Roger Meyer voodoo vibe. I send its AMP 2 output to a second DI Live and in studio. Now I have one PA speaker for the audience and one for me and my drummer to hear (we use looping so we need it to hear very well). The "stereo" effect of having two "amp speakers" (PA speakers in this case) is 10x more satisfying than any amp i ever played since i was 12 years old. I can have the speakers up on 6 foot stands so Im not blowing the audience out with guitar (its above their heads this way). That VOODOO VIBE though- sounds like a glassy, pristine yet dirty little amp all its own. An EHX POG sounds massive through a PA. I don't think ill use amps any time soon. In the studio I mic the PA speakers with two inexpensive AKG cardioid pencil condensers bc I want the recording to sound just like the speakers sound in my room. Just thought I'd weigh in with my set up. Im proud of it. Been chasing it for 14 years. BTW my vintage cheap Telestar sounds crazy through this rig. Especially with 1k and 400 boosted on the mxd Graphic EQ. Just saying, you can create many tones, or you can buy one big ol fender or fox tone.

Actually, i would like to see a video where you tell about different types of microphones, what kinds are better for drums, what better for amps etc. Cause it's kinda confusing when i look at the store and see lots of different mics and i dont what is better for what and why. Hi Steven Lynn, thanks for the great comment, I really appreciate it! I changed guitars and amp from the Marshall, but when I went to the Vox AC30 I stayed on the same guitar so you could hear the difference that the SM57 and Ribbon Mics and positioning brought to it. I can and will do other videos that stay on only one amp and one guitar, this one I was trying to get a few amps in and show the many different approaches to miking cabs and open back combos. First, my compliments on your fine guitar playing! Whether you are playing clean, or dirty, you display excellent technique, and precise playing. You are versatile and well skilled! Very well done! The second point is...the mic technique on open backs was quite valuable. I have a recently acquired Mesa Mark V single 12 inch open back combo, and it just lacks a certain something when I record it using a single mic. If I push it through a closed back Mesa 2x12 it's fat as can be. I will use a pair of 57's on it, and see if I cant fatten it up a bit! I am very grateful for these many video technical videos that offer the insiders tips, as they are borne of experience, and real world trial and error. Thanks again!
When you use two 57s where do you place the second one?
Larry Tate one in front, one in back. both diametrically opposed, and about equal distance from the dust cap, or speaker cone.
On the closed back I mean.

Great videos here Warren! So many options available... any thoughts on achieving crystal-clean shimmery tones with an amp/mic combo? I cant seem to get quite there thru my Fender Champ with my Rode NT 1000. Seems like direct is almost the way to go for those Cocteau like tones?

I hear a lot of guys are recommending to crank up the volume so that the speaker starts to move the air (speaker excursion) and then some are going as far as to go for the cabinet resonance volumes. What is your take on that?

Hi +Evgeny Sazhin Great question! It really depends on your preference for tone! I grew up mic'ing small speakers primarily, they worked harder and I got the tone I require! But using a 15 on some guitar tones I kept the volume lower and git a very fat tone! I would strongly suggest you experiment as there is no right way! Thanks very much I really appreciate it!! Hi Warren, Hope you're having a wonderful day :) . Im curious about recording guitar Cabs. I have all 4x12 cabs here and Im thinking that I might get a better result with either a 112 or a 212 cab where Miking is concerned. Do you have any advice? I don't play Metal. Im more of a rock player and a clean stratocaster player. My main amp is a Friedman BE-100 (Its amazing). Love your shows.
In general with SM 57 , we should point it to the centre of the speaker , the edge or something in between? I worked some time ago instuuos and pointing it to the centre is a no go, the tone sounded like direct line.
Hi Alexandre, marvellous question! The centre is the brightest sound, the edge is the dullest, yes, usually I split it somewhere in the middle. However it would entirely depend on the sound I was trying to achieve!

These are great suggestions. However, I have to record silently at home. I use my Marshall JMP-1 with its cab sim output which isn't too bad, and I have an AMT pedal that sounds reasonably good and has some cool crunch sounds. My idea was to split my guitar signal and feed that to the Marshall and the AMT, feed that in to my TC G-Major for a few effects and record that. Do you have any experience with direct recording?
The Carl Martin stuff is great, but would you record the guitar tone with the delay or do you add delay after?
Hi +Jak Leyton Great question! It depends! I like to print the way I want to hear it, but sometimes if it's a really tight delay in time with the track then I will use an on board delay. Thanks for watching David Mood! Yes I learned that trick from Dave Jerden, he used it on Alice in Chains and Janes Addiction albums. I don't often reamp di signals but when I do I highly recommend the Radial one, it sounds amazing!! I always keep the amp on the ground, I like the low end I get from that. What would happen if you didn’t “flip” the polarity of the microphone at the back of the cabinet? Btw You’re a really steady blues and jazz player!
Warren do you have any rules of thumb for reverb on guitar? Do you prefer to add the reverb in the mix or utilize the amp reverb, or both? I have a tube carvin amp I just started mic'ing up with an SM57 (open back so I gotta try the method in the video) and I love the sound of the physical spring plate reverb it has built in so I'll use that lightly when I track, just make sure to not kill it in case I change my mind. Also, since I've been mic'ing up my amp I've also been throwing some blankets over the rig to kill the reflections a little bit-- waiting on some bass traps for my room in the meantime since it's not currently the best acoustic space

You probably figured this out in the last five years but modeling and plugins are great but they can't replicate 100% of the characteristics of a really good amp. Often a guitarist has dialed in their sound through an amp, typically a tube amp of their choice. It's as much a part of their sound as their guitar and their fingers. Ask the Edge or Brian May to swap their AC30s for an imitation AC30 modeling software and they would probably kick you the face. I worked hard to get a good tone from my AC30, so I want to capture that character in recording. A producer friend of mine wants me to record my amp and send a DI track to him as well, to mix with potential other amp sims. And I'm like you can fuck right off...or refund me my $1,400 I spent on my amp!

I use GarageBand. Recording the amp, a small Marshall, I get so much volume,the Amp settings have to be all the way down. I use a Focusrite interface. My question is how do you adjust the interface and the DAW to get a nice sound without the amp turned way down? I'd love to know what can be done and how to not get a very hard and rough recording. Do you use headphones to monitor the DAW live?
Hi *****, thanks for the great question! I would suggest buying a pad for your mic if the amp is putting out a huge amount of volume. I believe a 10-20db mic pad would be around $20 or so. That can bring down the gain going into your DAW considerably and avoid distorting your DAW. I do often use headphones when placing my mic on my cab, I have those Extreme Isolation Headphones which really helps in loud situations. Let me know how it all goes! Have a marvelous time recording! Tere is an album they made name firestorm. They sound like old school heavy metal and they sound cool.
