During research for my degree dissertation in music production I watched 100’s of hours of Warrens teachings and I’m immensely grateful for the knowledge. Such a brilliant teacher and patient man.
You can also dub a 2nd guitar using a capo...which I do on almost 90% of acoustic guitar recordings, along with a few other tricks such as this trick and a 12-string guitar...I have a dedicated guitar just for this trick....
from shirt buttons, mic placement, nashville tuning, snafus in the beginning of acoustic strum passages - you hit on most of the things i already learned along the way, most by trial and error. thanks for making this in such a pleasant, profession manner. i really appreciate it!
Hi Friends, this is one of my favorite production tips for acoustic guitar. Many of you have probably heard me talk about the "Nashville Tuning" to simulate a 12-string guitar. First, I record an acoustic tuned regularly, then I double the part using a cheap guitar tuned with the high string of a 12-string. It is a really great sound and often it is much more defined than using a 12-string. It's even how they recorded many of the Tom Petty records that I really love! I hope you enjoy the video and please leave lots of comments! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro HEY Warren! Good to see Nashville tuning still rocks! Replace E wounded-string with a plain one (i.e. unwounded) and then play first 4 string on guitar, from top to bottom (E-A-D-G) followed by playing from botttom to top (E-B-G-D). Do YOU remeber anything? :)
Hi Warren, I'm now officially hooked on your videos and this one particularly is very useful. Thank you. A cheap acoustic hunting I will go! I know it's said that "you can't please all the people all the time", but what's not to "like" about it? Perhaps the 41 own cheap Epiphones and if so, what's wrong with that? LOL Good gear alone does NOT make good music and many a fine tune has been played on an old guitar. Thank you again. Regards Graham
Sensational, you were a master of yours. Some of them might feel it exaggerated to produce a song like that. But you show what a simple acoustic guitar is capable of, it’s gives a song this very special sounded carpet that you never get with keyboards. thank you for your effort
I just got back into recording at home and this video totally opened up the world of my large diaphram condencer mic with my acoustic guitar! I had no idea in the past that the soundhole was causing all of my clarity problems. I was just concerned about getting good levels. I positioned the mic facing across the soundhole pointing at my picking hand and voila! Thanks so much for doing your excellent videos!
this channel is fantastic. I've been producing music professionally for 10+ years and I'm still learning everyday, and learning lots from you! thank you.
I've watched this video a number of times since its release and, as so often happens with this mysterious music journey I'm on, mental notes are taken without me even realizing it. I wrote a song back in 1989, the oldest song I've written, and have always thought it would make a very good country release. I don't particularly like how my vocals sit with it, but I've just sat on it all these years and rarely even perform it during my Friday night set. Anyway, I decided to gather some local musicians and record it in my home studio and release it as a single. I've been laying down the acoustic and electric guitar fills and something was just missing. I remembered the Nashville Tuning you'd mentioned and strung my Taylor Jewel Limited Edition acoustic as a Nashville this evening. Wow, what a difference that makes! I think I found some of what was missing with the opening measures, which must be bright and full. This valuable tuning information you shared is really gonna add that sparkle you mentioned. Again, your generosity within this community and your willingness to share is so very much appreciated, Warren. Be blessed!
This is one of those things, Warren. I often use the example of loaning an old used car or truck to someone. You don't realize how well you know your own vehicle till someone else has to drive it and cannot figure anything out... I couldn't open the gas cap! I could't find the wiper switch! I couldn't adjust the seats! These are all things an owner or vet is familiar with that others are not. This video is perfect in that regard. My guess is that this stuff is all second nature to you and while a bit of it is now after years of trial and error getting there with me, it is extremely helpful to see this done so concisely and basically. For a vet, it might seam simplistic. For a student, invaluable. Please keep doing videos like this. Love them.
I’ve watched 100s of 1000s of studio videos/how tos/ studio tricks/etc... and I can honestly say this is one the best. Very well done, kept me tuned in and soooo much new valuable information! And that Nashville tuning trick is incredible, first hearing. Keep up the good work!! Watching all the way from Twillingate, Newfoundland, Canada! Cheers, mate!
This really specific type of video going through the whole process of recording a particular instrument end-to-end (from mic placement, chain, doubling techniques, and tips and tricks in the DAW) is incredibly on point. 'Marvelous' work. Keep 'em coming!!!
Great job! From a fellow "old school" lifelong industry pro, so glad guys like you are around to teach recording techniques the proper way. Sounds great Warren, real instruments! Keep up the great work man!
Wow !! I have been searching for a way to get clear acoustic sounds in my "muddy" dull acoustic tracks... Also like the 12 string effect... I was going to buy an expensive Taylor guitar because they are brighter than Martins, but this trick saved me money and time,,, This is an awesome video !! Thanks Warren...
Straight into it, straight talking, simple & inexpensive, great sounding, recorded in real time with a track to really feel the vibe within the mix immediately 10/10 x
Hi Warren , just found your videos a couple of weeks ago, Thank you so much for spending your time to spread producing knowledge to the world. Thanks again. I admire people like you . I wish I could teach the way you do .
Wow. Thanks Warren. Your instructional technique is awesome. I love how you've got so much knowledge to share, and yet are totally humble at the same time.
Thanks, Warren. Your content is accessible, free of attitude (thank you!) and you somehow hit on the exact things I've had as unanswered questions for ages.
I was searching for tips on how to record acoustic guitar and came across this video. This is great advice. I've never recorded an acoustic before and I would have definitely pointed the mic right at the sound hole the first time. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge here on TH-cam!
Wow, that does sound incredibly nice. That thing about the 6 string being a 12 string blew my mind. People always ask why I don't play a 12 string and Warren explained all the reasons that they are difficult to record and play with, let alone tune. But yes the 12 string effect is wonderful to hear and record with this Nashville Guitar setup.
First heard of the Nashville tuning trick from the guitar charts on John Mayer's first album...cool to hear/see it broken down like this. Awesome stuff.
Warren, you're an amazingly talented guy. I'm new to this recodring malarkey and struggle with my vocals to get a decent recodring but hopefully watching all your videos will massively help. I've wrote a few cheesy songs and I'm trying to get the best recodring possible. Im using studio one presonus mixer and software. If you have any tips to different software please can you advise. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, it's very much appreciated. Cheers Gerry
Hi Warren, you keep mesmerizing me every time you post a video demonstrating the different ways of recording and mixing tracks. Tricks like the ones you showed with the Nashville are so great, that I bet there wouldn't be a flaw in it, given your thought process which was so evidently shown. Just wanna say that I appreciate the time and effort that you put in to make videos like these in addition to your regular work load. Hope that some day, I get to meet you and even get my songs produced with your creative touch ! God Bless !
Hi +jdock2 Great!! Yes Don Smith introduced me to it and I had never heard of it before then! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great video Warren! I never knew how Nashville guitar was used and it is always really interesting to see how you record and edit guitars! It sounds huge! Thank you!
be leave it or not I started on a 12 string. this is cool stuff as always thanks a million. always pop in on your stuff when I am taking 5 or 10 mins away from the sounds I am working on cheers warren.
I really really love your channel so much Warren. Everytime you inspire me with your great tipps. Im so thankful for all these things that you share with your community. Im a huge fan of your work pls keep it up for ever!
As always, first class. I ‘ve used the Nashville idea since stumbling over a piece on Johnny Marr who first created The Smiths trademark jangle in just that way. Used sparingly, it adds a light sparkle to anything in need. Double a standard tuned acoustic for 12 string sounds. Get creative with tunings and capos and add mandolin/banjo like sounds.
Quality channel here! I've been following Warren for a couple of years now ! it's always a pleasure to come back and forth on his videos and re-learn the basics and even new stuff! Shout Out Mister Warren! 🙏🏼🔥 Love from FRANCE 🇫🇷
I've been thinking of buying a 12 strings acoustic guitar, but when I watch this video, I think I'm gonna takes your tips and advice. Thank you for the 12 strings trick, Warren.
Hey Warren, what's up!? My names is Rodrigo Vasconcellos I'm from Brazil and I'd like to thank u for all knowledge u r sharing on TH-cam! Thank you so much! All the best for you "mate"! :)) and "mind the gap"! :)))
Thank you for demonstrating some of your techniques for recording acoustic guitar. It was surprisingly simple - one small diaphragm mike pointed at the body near the neck. I also appreciate the explanation of the Nashville tuning method. It seems like a great way to get a 12 string sound without the hassle of a 12 string.
The idea of splitting out the high strings of a 12 string is a great idea! I would never have thought of doing that, but now I will since I got an extra guitar I can use for this purpose. :) Thanks for that tip.
I have always wondered how to get that rich natural chorus sounding acoustic guitar sound. The tip of using the EADG octvae strings is fantastic, thanks for sharing this wonderful tip. Love it.
Warren. Its not often i learn a new trick from you. I faithfully watch your videos just to see if your workflow is similar to mine, same applies to your edits, your plugins, your use of compressor/EQ, if its similar to mine. At he end of the day you sit in production central and im in Portsmouth ;) But i got to admit the "nashville" trick is just WTF!!!! I never thought of that. What a tune you have achieved with it. I can accure you that my next production will feature it. And i promiise you. This will be the only song (since i do not publish my work on this platform) i broadcasted on the YT and all credits to the sound of my acoustic will go to you. Thank you very much Warren.
Hi +Konrad Unold yay!! That's great to hear! I know many of the things we see these days are quite common, this idea I got from Don Smith who used it on the Tom Petty albums he made! Bottom line I've learned fro much smarter people than myself! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I looooove the Nashville tuning trick. It's easy to see/hear/feel why it's such a classic technique! It's all over my favorite Stones records (the Mick Taylor era)... Thanks Warren!
I am not even a minute into the video and you already have helped immensely! I can't even count how many takes that I have ruined with the pick hitting the soundboard or pickguard. That is a sound that I have come to loathe. Thank you!
Fantastic videos. It's what the interweb was made for. I've been fiddling around for a few years now and I've got a lot of decent gear, but I've just made a decision to invest a good bit of time learning to record properly. TH-cam is invaluable. I'm finding your straightforward presenting style to be a good fit for my needs. Many thanks.
I hit the scratch plate a ton while self producing my first project. Now that I’ve been working on a new album project, I’ve practiced playing acoustic without hitting the scratch plate and it’s saving a lot of time in mixing those parts.
Thanks Warren, great tips on the mic positioning and high pass. I'd never heard of the Nashville acoustic treatment until now, but it makes TOTAL sense.
God damn. Nashville guitar. Such a brilliant and beautiful idea. I'm a huge Petty fan and I have never heard of that trick being used. So simple and yet so fantastic. Can't wait to use this idea in the studio on my next record. Love your channel. I have been highly educated from it. Cheers, sir!
I really enjoy your videos. Your presentation and style are clear and the tips and ideas you share are very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make these vids.
Nashville tuning for a faux 12 string sound. Very cool! I've been playing a long time, but haven't heard that one before. Even though I have a superb Acoustic 12 string, I'll definitely have to try this technique out. Thanks heaps Warren! :D
Great stuff. This makes me like live music even more :) I can't imagine the amount of hours that goes into the acquisition of this level of expert knowledge. Well done.
That’s a super trick with the 12 string. The whole thing sounded wonderful when you finished it. I’ve heard that on records that I absolutely love and wondered how it was done. I always thought it was someone recording a 2nd part an octave higher.
The doubling, Nashville tuning and panning. So easy to do, yet it sounds like there are 4 guitars blasting through my headphones and I am being overwhelmed with richness.
Thank you so incredibly much. I have ALWAYS loved Tom Petty and have racked my brain of how he gets so much shimmer on his acoustics. Been driving me crazy how to get that, played with capos for hours thinking that was it. So the Nashville guitar tuning has just saved me so much frustration. Cheers!
Thank you so much for this video. The Nashville guitar technique mimicking the 12 string solves a huge problem I've had, in that I don't own a 12-string.
Been doing this approach for many years in my studio really makes for a big sound, only thing I do a little is capo different positions on each track...we use it a lot here in Nashville great video!
Fantastic video! I actually did know about Nashville tuning, but I haven't given it any thought in the last four years since I recorded my acoustic EP in studio and put a Nashville tuning guitar all over it at the recommendation of my producer. Absolutely love that sound; thanks for reminding me about it. Also, that Yamaha acoustic sounds freaking amazing.
Thanks for the awesome tips Warren - so simple, yet brilliantly effective - i've already saved this to my favourites for later reference - keep up the good work!
every time you stopped recording, i kept reaching for cmd/s lol brilliant vid - i love recording acoustic guitars. a re strung 6 string with 12 strings is really clever
the bit about buttons/keys and rattles is a really good point... especially when it's solo acoustic pieces (where every little bit of noise comes out)... also trying to stay still (in regards to making noise at least) and sitting in a comfortable position so that you don't have to move around too much when making big jumps up and down the fret board... there's been quite a few times where I've got a good performance and it's been ruined by stuff like that! thanks a lot for the videos warren.... i'm going to try the nashville tuning!
Hi +James Kelly I agree 100%! I hear a tiny rattle and then I spend ages trying to find out where it's coming from! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I have setup a guitar for nashville tuning a year or so ago, pretty neat trick. I don;t do a lot of recording but have been lately, Ive been a live sound guy for 35 years. I have not thought of doubling the acoustic track and panning. Thanks! great video
During research for my degree dissertation in music production I watched 100’s of hours of Warrens teachings and I’m immensely grateful for the knowledge. Such a brilliant teacher and patient man.
Wow! Thanks ever so much
The Nashville guitar trick just changed my life. I almost cried. Can't wait to try this. It sounds amaaaaazing.
Ah! I know right! :D I love that feeling when u actually learn something :D
i've been dying to do 12 string electric but dont have one and man is my mind blown
Yeah, this is amazing!
This is an amazing trick! I’m in the process of recording an acoustic record and this is awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing!

Holy cow!. Great tip, gonna Nashville up my spare acoustic 😀
Produce Like A Pro seems like a big ask but could you help produce my band's next EP please?
Hi Warren, I'm now officially hooked on your videos and this one particularly is very useful. Thank you.

Dude, that Nashville just saved my 69 euro old acoustic from getting to the trash. Im SO gonna use it now
Thanks ever so much! I’m glad to be able to help

Man, that Nashville trick is really a revelation for me (and I am 61 years old now....). I really sounds amazing. Thank you!
Words just can´t express how much I´m learning watching your Vids.... Kudos
Hi +Colm Mulvey You're welcome! So glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
this channel is fantastic.
Love them.
Hi +PJSGBC Aw shucks! You are very kind indeed Sir! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Greetings from India. 10 years of guitar and still learning . Nashville tuning...wow. That's new. Will apply that to my records. Thanks a lot Warren.

Hi +noisesoundtonevibe Great stuff! Thanks for letting us know! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Love the octave trick on the acoustic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸🎧
This was great. What a gem of a trick here.

Love the framed picture of the WWll "Spitfire" fighter aircraft in the upper right corner of the video.
Found it - the one who tells it straight - bookmarked and subscribed - a million thanks! ZING!
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I’ve placed pads there to stop the sound and all kinds of things when recording different artists
The Nashvile 12 strings trick blew my mind! :o OMG!
Such an immense source of knowledge to all of us🙏🙏 thank you, plap!
Gamechanger. That Nashville stringed up. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks Warren! I just began using a Nashville tuning a few weeks ago and it's good to know many of Tom Petty's guitar sounds used it.
Thanks Warren, great tips on the mic positioning and high pass. I'd never heard of the Nashville acoustic treatment until now, but it makes TOTAL sense.
Hi Russ, thanks ever so much!! I'm so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Woooow amazing sound. How did u double the track without any phase issues? I havent seen u changing the mic in doubling the track.
Hi David, thank you ever so much for your kind words!! So glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Nashville tuning for a faux 12 string sound. Very cool! I've been playing a long time, but haven't heard that one before. Even though I have a superb Acoustic 12 string, I'll definitely have to try this technique out. Thanks heaps Warren! :D
Hi +Nathan Kaye Thanks for your kind words! Very glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
You live and learn! Thanks for the impressive acoustic recording tricks!
Thank You Warren !! I know this vid has been out for awhile but this really is some GOOD stuff
Can't wait to try this! It's amazing what you can do with an inexpensive instrument.
Bloody great - comprehensive solution. Thank you ever so much for this.
Great video. Now I know about Nashville doubling and set up a guitar for it for the first time. Thanks!
Ive never heard of that trick and I think its great! You are a great educator.
Fantastic video and advice, thank you so much. That Nashville tip is amazing!
Cheers!
Salut
I know It is a 2 years ago video
But à stupid question...
Is It better to record stand up or just like you on a chair?
Thanks for the video
Thank you so much for this video. The Nashville guitar technique mimicking the 12 string solves a huge problem I've had, in that I don't own a 12-string.
Probably the third time I watched this video. Awesome as ever. Will try the Nashville tuning next time I record something. Thanks a lot 👍😊
Great demo. Thanks
Warren. I've always wanted to try the "Nashville guitar" sound, now
you've demonstrated a much less expensive way to get there!!!
Hi +Jeff Fogle Haha! Yes quick and easy! Have a marvellous time recording Bass, many thanks Warren
Thanks for the awesome tips Warren - so simple, yet brilliantly effective - i've already saved this to my favourites for later reference - keep up the good work!
Hi +Hypnodelica Fantastic!! Glad you enjoyed the video!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great tips, really appreciate the years and experience you bring to the craft. Extremely well done, take a bow!
Great tip on the Nashville tuning! I'd heard of it but now I'm inspired to string up my seldom used backup acoustic this way.
Thanks!
The high stringing is cool! Thanks Warren!!
This is really great stuff!!!! You make so much sense and I'm learning a lot. Thank you
Thanks very much Rob!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This is such a useful trick, I have an old guitar in the loft that just found itself employment. Thanks very much.
every time you stopped recording, i kept reaching for cmd/s lol brilliant vid - i love recording acoustic guitars. a re strung 6 string with 12 strings is really clever
Great videos Warren. Thanks from Ireland :)
the bit about buttons/keys and rattles is a really good point... especially when it's solo acoustic pieces (where every little bit of noise comes out)... also trying to stay still (in regards to making noise at least) and sitting in a comfortable position so that you don't have to move around too much when making big jumps up and down the fret board... there's been quite a few times where I've got a good performance and it's been ruined by stuff like that! thanks a lot for the videos warren.... i'm going to try the nashville tuning!
Thanks! great video
Thanks ever so much my friend! You Rock!!
Total clarity and great advice.Thanks!
