What should you expect from the Mentor/Apprentice Experience?
Every person who works for me has apprenticed with me. The ones that have stayed the course have all built careers in the music industry. The common denominator in all of their success has been not only their single minded drive and ambition but their ability to encourage and support the artists around them.
I recently got two students from the Recording Connection, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to demonstrate what the experience of being an apprentice is really like and also just as importantly what to expect from a mentor.

love your channel Warren, been watching for about a year now...discovered Tim Pierce via your channel this morning and this is my comment on the vid you did with him on his channel about recording acoustic guitar;
"priceless information in this tutorial... i've started recording recently after playing guitar for years.. what i learnt from the vid is that every strum, every solo line of the acoustic guitar should serve a purpose and serve the song and mix.. otherwise .. as my first attempts at tracking have show.. you just get a kind of messy random sounding audio soup... acoustic guitar tracking is a precise craft .. thank very much for the video!!
i've realised that multitracking without preparation or thought can quickly lead to a random sounding amateurish mess. The precision and thought displayed in the aforementioned video ( and all of yours of course) is something that cannot be over emphasized.

I’d be interested to hear your opinion on using two plugin compressors inside the daw for those of us without hardware units. Specifically, I’ve been using a LA-2A emulator plugin in conjunction with a 1176 plugin to process acoustic guitar and also vocals. I picked this tip up in someone else’s youtube video but interesting to see you basically doing the same thing. Would you still recommend putting the 1176 plugin AFTER the LA-2A plugin? If not, why not?
as far as the compression chain, as a bedroom producer how can this be applied to your chain in your daw using plugins such as the waves dbx 160 and cla 76? Would these tips more or less translate to those plugins?
I love this video! You're ace Warren! The first place you pointed the mic (your fav place) at the bottom corner of the body....my guitar is an Ovation and has holes on both corners...what other place is good? (apart from the 12th fret...not keen..)

Thanks Craig! Great question! Experimenting is key! I would try the exact same place above if there's no sound holes, or just pull the mic back and get an overall sound of the guitar, the secret would to be recording in a fairly dead place if you do pull the mic back and get an overall sound. Loved this video Warren. Great to see hands on explanation. One thing though. You adjusted the EQ whilst the guitar player was "doodling ". Does that mean you record to tape or digital with the EQ set? I always thought the track should be recorded without any EQ? Cheers Christian.

Is there a difference between EQing on the pre vs. later dropping an EQ plugin on the track? Would either yield better results?
Just what the doctor ordered. I love the tips and tricks especially with the compression, Warren. I for myself love combining mics. Lately this ones works really well: ECM 50 taped near the hole. Got this one from your interview with Val Garray. Really awesome, could often work alone, sounds instantly 'right'. U87 angled in front of the hole. Love the extra oomph here. And my Joly modded Oktava mc 012 pointing on the higher fret like in this video for some extra 'bite'. So i can portion the sound like i want. But if the track is busy i tend to use only one of two of them. It's easier to handle.

Thanks for another great tutorial, there are some good tips in here as always! Really appreciated your comments about making the player comfortable; so many YT tutorials will just go over mic placement without ever touching on the human aspect of recording.
I'm curious about the philosophy behind your compression chain; you have the 165 going into the 1176, correct? I'm studying audio engineering at uni and my recording professors have been pretty adamant that the peak limiting that you're doing with the 1176 should be done first, so you're feeding the gentler compressor with a more even signal. Your dynamic processing here sounds fantastic regardless, I'm just interested to hear your thoughts behind your choice of order in this signal chain.

Great stuff as always. Out of curiosity, do you also use the 160 into the 1176 for tracking vocals (and other instruments)? I was always told compressing vocals going in was a bad thing back in the day, but I suspect that was because tape compresses the signal naturally. I think putting my vocals through an 1176 going in would help with the transients - would love to hear your thoughts....
Hi Defeat, yes, I do like that combination. The 1176 is my favourite compressor though and I can use that on pretty much anything! But wow who told you that back in the day no one liked to compress? That's very far from the truth, every classic Engineer I know used compression a lot on Vocals. If you get a chance to open up classic recordings, there's a few flying around, you'll hear a lot of compression applied to them! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

I'm in dire need of some assistance. I've recorded some acoustic guitar and everything is great, BUT I now realize that it is dynamic to a point where it hurts to listen to it. Some of the transients (picking) really kick you in the brain. How can I fix that (at least partially)? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I learned this at SAE, they are really focussed on good mic placement and getting it right with the recordings, thats why I enjoy watching these vids and the interviews. Hopefully I can afford a good 'gold channel' in the near future for this kind of excellent sounding recordings.

If I was doing a live recording in a room, with mic'ed up acoustics and vocals, as well as some percussion, what kind of frequencies would you recommend cutting on the guitar, the vocals and the cajon to achieve some seperation? Maybe even a violin in there aswell.
Hi Music Saves the World, great question! Low end rumble, building up in the room can cause issues. Just be careful of course not to high pass too much or you will remove the low end out of the instruments. However, Vocals could probably go up to around 100Hz, Acoustic around the same, but experiment and listen back. Using Hyper Cardiod Mics will really help! Your videos are addictive. In between fiddling about with my toys, and trying to employ some of your techniques. I sometimes complete a verse or two. I actually have to learn to discipline myself lest I get lost in a produce like a pro marathon.

THIS WAS SOOOOOO GREAT !!!!... this is exactly what I've been looking for in your videos.. I learn from all of them.. but this .. was 100% what I've been hoping you would put up... As I am trying to .. ( aside from learning to record ) Going to be focusing on acoustic guitars / music.. in my attempt to learn and get the sound I am looking for..I am in the process of Trying to record the Music from Eric Claptons 92' MTV Un plugged session . and matching the sound as close as possible.. I would like to see more videos on your Mic chains and settings and set ups .. for various situations.. Be it Acoustic guitars, your vocal chains and settings.. etc.. these videos are so helpfull.. wish this kind of thing was around back when i was young and played... could have been life changing... such a great thing your doing for the up and coming musicians.. !! Love it .. Almost got enough money saved to get the lewitt LCT340 ( I like the built in Low cut ) along with a bae 1073mpf , and a tlm 103.. which should give me a pretty darn good mic chain combination for what im currently looking for.. That said.. I also want to get a good compressor.. and can squeeze in a distressor.. however .. I know nothing about compression and need to learn and understand it.. should I get a DBX 160x to start on as .. do you think the Distressor will be to much to learn on ? Sorry for the long post....lol... this vid got me excited... so .. great job as always ..+O)

Love this. Quick question. When using the Small Dia Condenser mic on an acoustic guitar with a cut away would you still place it in the lower right side of the body where the cutaway is?
Nope. Nothing but air. Mic'ing the horn (on most acoustics) provides a great balance of mids to highs without catching the "thumpy" "boomy" bass frequencies. The vibration of the actual surface of the guitar is what makes it a nice placement. If you have a guitar with a cutaway, go with the 12-14th fret directly , or double mic it (imo anyway - Warren may have some better advice).
Stratomacaster thank you for your reply 😊. 12th fret is usually how I mic it. I might try the top right of the body. Or its an excuse to by a new guitar without a cutaway 😉😉

ive always plugged my guitar processorstraight into a mixer which in turn is set as my soundcard in cubase, does it make that much difference to mic cabinets etc?
Great question! It's really about how you play guitar, are you inspired by live amps? If so use them! I like to work that way, but in this modern age I know that many people use virtual amps and get great results!! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time mixing, many thanks Warren
Acoustic guitar can be a tricky thing, I was really interested in the dual compressor/limiter chain being used in this video. I was also surprised how close the mic placement can be. Thanks for posting this.
Hi monkey dangus, agreed! Thanks very much! That's a fairly ideal position for me, however between 12th-14th Fret back 6 inches or also works great. It's important to remember as I said in the video there are many places that work, just try to stay away from the sound hole where it's extremely boomy. that's a fantastic trick using two compressors, one to compress fairly evenly and then one to catch the peaks

I will try to recreate that compression chain with my Waves dbx160 and T-RackS 1176 clone plug-ins. I wonder if the VU-meter in the software is as unreliable as in the hardware? If they modeled it accurately, then the answer should be yes, haha.
I guess you would still compress that guitar a little bit more in the mix, right?
Good point at the end, about recording a source with two mics: just because one records two mics doesn't mean one have to use them to get a stereo sound, but just to capture two different aspects of the sound of the particular instrument. Many thanks, David

Hi Ismael, yes indeed! Most small diaphragm condensers will work very well! You can also use a large diaphragm, I often use them around the 12-14th fret pulled back a bit, sounds great! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

How do I approach a studio engineer to ask for an apprenticeship? I'm at a school for music production and sound engineering but I feel like the three year program isn't enough. What level of knowledge should I have before I start working at a professional studio?

I record with a SM57 - now that's inexpensive :)
I do it mainly because I don't have anything else than this old battered thing, but I get pretty good sounds out of it. Not only for acoustic, but for everything else too. Mic placement seems to be the most important thing to get a good sound (my classical guitar requires a different placement than my steel string acoustic). Sometimes I have to correct a bit of ugly mids that don't fit into the mix, but my standard placements seem to work great without a lot of correction at all.
Hi JanDeluxe78, great comment! The first time Mark Endert mixed a song for me I had recorded the acoustic guitar at my house with an SM57 with a Digi001 with just the pre amp on the Digidesign interface. an SM57 is an extremely versatile workhorse mic
IWant Appledumplings: I don't even know where I got it from, it was just there one day. The casing was broken (!) but it still works fine after a duct tape fix.
Nonetheless, I will buy a condenser sometime soon, just to see how to work with that (I never recorded with one before). I know a guy who works for Audio Technica, so maybe I will get a deal there :)
Thanks again, Warren! I know you're a fan of the 1176, but if you are going to use both a compressor and a limiter in the same chain, than why not consider using a Neve 2254? This way you have the comp and the limiter in the same device and you only have one piece of equipment versus two in the signal chain, unless of course, you really do prefer the tonal imprint of the combination of dbx and the 1176 like you said.

Agreed it is a little too 'overly sentimental' It is strange that even though every Engineer knows VU's aren't as accurate (there's definitely a time lag) but we enjoy the way they respond! I was told to record acoustic guitar with two mics in a stereo track. What's your opinion about that?
reydav77 I use an sm57 on the body and c414 on the neck. i love the c414 on an acoustic because it glistens. I wouldn't record as a stereo channel because I want to EQ and pan them separately. panning wise depends on the rest of the content of the song or the stereo spread i want. I won't necessarily pan symmetrically. ie, sm57 hard left, c414 hard right.
