    I'm in love with my 64g deck! I've always been a console gamer and now this is my fave device! 😍 upgrading the SSD drive soon! I installed decky loader plug in and now I have the vibrant plug in and it looks as bright and colorful as the switch screen. Dunno why valve didn't make this a custom feature but at least it's a great workaround that you can customize to each game

    Owner of 256gb model here. Was incredibly excited to receive it (after waiting a year), and it has exceeded my expectations for the past 6 months. It's a PC, so a little tinkering may be required here and there, but what an incredible value this thing is.

    • @whyjnot420
      @whyjnot420 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I got mine around 6 months ago, back in August. 256GB version as well. So far I have not been forced to tinker at all, though of course I have tinkered around a bit on my own. Note: I don't consider basic graphic options to be "tinkering", to me tinkering is editing an ini file or something like that. Though to people who have only ever used consoles, I can understand why they might call something like changing screen resolutions to be "tinkering". Different perspectives and all that.
      I have been pleasantly surprised at just how capable it is. I really love this machine. I have been gaming since before the NES came out. Including early portables like Microvision. As such even after switching from consoles to PCs, I have always had a portable of some kind, but have always been annoyed at the fact that I either had to use them stock or do really annoying stuff in order to install custom software on them. The deck offers a perfect solution to that kind of BS.

    I'm super happy with my 64 GB Deck. For a non-gamer like me (or novice gamer at this point, I guess) it's hands down the best device on the market. Like the Nintendo Switch it's an independent, compact device - I don't have to pay and make space for a monitor, TV, keyboard and mouse, controllers etc. But compared Nintendo, the games themselves for the Deck are *significantly* more affordable. Especially when they go on sale, which they frequently do. I can try so many more types of games without fearing that I've shelled out €45 on something I'll not like.
    And when I want to try controllers or whatever, I can borrow some from my brothers.
    Now, I haven't played anything actually demanding on the Deck yet, my "heaviest" game is Witcher 3, but so far the tinkering I've had to has been minimal. I installed ProtonDB for Witcher 1, and I've played around with all the settings without truly noticing much of a difference in most cases. It's been a mostly "pick up and play" experience for me since I got my Deck back in July.
    As for it being a "Switch killer"... Nah. It's nowhere near mainstream enough, and I don't think that's likely to change anytime soon. Nintendo exclusive games are insanely popular, too, and there's no denying the Switches are significantly more compact devices. My Switch lite is hilariously tiny next to my Deck, even in a case. The Deck is wonderful, it's amazing value, but it's not particularly portable...

There's a ton of stuff that I still have yet to do with it like emulation, but I use it to edit photos and video, I'll use it like a tablet sometimes, and of course I play my PC games at times and in places that I never would have thought. The reason ppl call it a switch killer i believe is because you can emulate a lot of switch games on the steam deck without being bound to the switch and ONLY the switch. You still have the freedom of a pc in a handheld, unlike a switch. Same could ofc apply to ps and xbox since u can emulate them also, but they arent in the same category as handhelds.

    At 5:16 you say that games are locked to 800p but you can individually set some game's resolutions manually in the game properties in steam. A lot of games you might not want to run full resolution of your monitor but it brings a lot of advantages such as being able to set your scaling filter to something better like FSR 1.0 which makes lower resolution content for exemple 720p a lot more tolerable. And finally you don't have to use a keyboard and mouse if you use your dock in the living room since you can keep using gaming mode and even run some old games at 4K

    I don't get why people complain about battery life. just adapt game settings to fit 8-10W and you will att least get 2.5-3h. With the last 10-15W not improving your performance a whole lot (due to how the APU is configured. it's the most efficient at 5-10W). You can run Cyberpunk at 30fps with beautiful settings at 8W. offering a bit over 3hours of battery life. Keep in mind, the Switch runs at 5W or less in portable mode and 15W in docked mode. So running the deck at 15W is the same as running the Switch in docked mode on battery which isn't very smart if you want battery life... The difference with the deck is that YOU are in control of your own experience and it isn't curated by the developers.

    I happened to get my steam deck delivered (back in august) as I was leaving to go to a friends house. So I decided to open it up over there. My first response was thinking that it felt bigger than I expected (in a good way). My friends first response was on how light it was. Granted he also commented on how it was nice to have a screen larger than that of a Switch... which made me laugh. (He doesn't actually own a Switch, so he was just working on memory there, therefore I cut him some slack and he was talking about the physical dimensions, not screen resolution)
    For the deck itself, I love it. Things like battery life are not an issue for me, though I do understand why others would have a different opinion. (for example, I don't need a charging bank or whatnot for my use, as I have a jump pack for my pickup that is my portable battery as well as a rather powerful inverter if I need it.) 6 months in and I really do not have any major complaints about it. There are little things, such as using the linux desktop without an actual mouse and keyboard is, well, annoying, but that is to be expected, so I don't hold it against the deck (and why I bought a miniature wireless keyboard). The ONE thing is that I wish there was a kickstand built into the deck. I have found that using a kickstand to keep the desk upright, just sitting on top of the case, which is on my lap, makes truly extended sessions (over a day) no big deal. Using it like shown in this video is fine, but having a kickstand is just so nice.
    I don't understand why people dislike bezels unless they actually interfere with things, such as in a multimonitor desktop setup. Personally I like having a little area around the screen that I can use to grab something as I abhor even the slightest smudge on the edge of a screen. For the deck itself, I have found that the healthy border along the edge of the screen to be a boon in scrolling around, since I do not have to touch an area closer to the center in order to scroll around, I can just slide my finger across the one of the sides. Eliminating nasty smudges in the center and accidental clicks in that area as well. Granted I try to avoid using touchscreens whenever possible as I truly do not like the idea of display and input devices being one in the same. I never have. They can be handy at times, but as a primary means of input, I utterly despise them.
    I wish they had done a better job with the case though. At a minimum it should have had the internal space for the charger and ideally, the dock as well. That said, the fact that a decently tough semi-hard (not hard, hard would be a metal or plastic or even wood exterior, not this hardened fabric) case is standard for all versions, is a great thing. Semi-hard cases are still better than simple padded cases as many a guitarist will tell you, but they are a far cry from true hard shells. This is the first portable I have owned in 40 years that comes with a case as a standard feature for every model. (Look up Microvision if you think I am lying about the 40 year part)
    caveat: I got the 256GB version and added a 512GB card to it. Have the official Valve dock. Got a third party case that has room for more than just the deck itself. I use the Valve case when at home, the third party case for when I am on the go. Got a case protector, purely for the fact that it has a kickstand. Also grabbed a miniature keyboard/trackpad, the onscreen keyboard works well enough combined with the trackpads (granted I am one of those people who loves the steam controller, so I already had a lot of practice using that particular way of using an onscreen keyboard), but there are no options atm for moving it while inside a game. As such if you are doing something like entering a console command in Skyrim, you cannot see the console. Also, physical keyboards ftw.

    I love my 64gig, with a high speed 512gb micro sd i snagged for 40 bucks it gives me a lot of flexibility, biggest problem is shadercache and compatdata on steam games kinda blowing up your internal memory, but as long as you dont fill up your 512 SD card you should be ok. @@jefferrrson1x find a good guide for it and follow it carefully. It's not hard, the biggest risk is over tightening the screws or not properly screwing them back in making them loose permanently. I can give you some tips here, but like I said find a good guide on TH-cam or something that will tell you more
      Take the SD card out before opening or you could snap it. Keep your screws organized. When prying the back of the steam deck off after unscrewing, don't use metal or you could scratch/damage your steam deck. Use something plastic, ideally a prying tool but a credit card could work too. When you finish and are putting the back cover screws in, turn the screw left until it clicks in and then gently screw it in, but don't over tighten them.
