Yeah, I'd probably love it more if I didn't have to force myself to play slightly off-beat. The fun part of a rhythm game is getting in the groove and just letting the notes flow naturally, and that requires perfect note chart sync.

Seeing the trend of Friday Night Funkin' reminds me about how rhythm games are still often seen as a novelty. But with the rise of these games I genuinely believe that rhythm games can make a comeback so long as we in the community keep that momentum going and begin to push other rhythm games while the hype is still there. It's actually kind of why I started to make videos on different rhythm games in the first place and why people should play them and your content is what pushed me to do this so I'll take this opportunity to say thank you and keep fighting the good fight.

    • @joao34386
      @joao34386 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

It's important to take the right approach. Etienne did a very good job talking about FNF in a calm and respectful manner, and some people still act like he's gatekeeping.
When trying to show casual players that there's a lot more to the game, it's important to keep in mind that they are CASUAL players - in layman's terms, they still suck. But telling them that is not the right approach.
I've been making an effort to give players advice when they're struggling, even if it's on songs where I can't make logical sense as to why it would be difficult. SHowing them advice on how to improve, so they get better, and then showing them how much more is possible outside of FNF (stepmania, osu, quaver, ...) will make them a lot more likely to be interested in getting better.
People who are really good at a video game often forget that it's not a common skill, especially cause they're usually surrounded by others who are just as skilled. It helps to think of it as trying to learn a new instrument. You wouldn't be able to pick up a guitar and strum perfectly if you had zero experience - you'd need some weeks, months, even years to learn it - it's the exact same for video games.

I think the biggest takeaway from this game's popularity is that attractive surface-level elements like visuals sell games 100x more than mechanical depth or quality. People like FNF because it has good music and good character designs, plus just enough "story" to give a little bit of extra personality to each character. For the majority of people playing and enjoying the game, the quality of the actual rhythm game mechanics are pretty much a non-factor. I mean, a lot of Guitar Hero's popularity came from a similar place back in the day, I think.

I think it's really cool that any rhythm game is getting mainstream popularity. It's possible that, however small a group, some of the people who play this may get more into more serious rhythm games. It would be great to see etterna, osu, etc. get more attention because of this. It's possible there are some players with extremely high potential who will have this as their gateway into rhythm gaming.

Imo there can only be a net positive, cause there's only 3 types of groups: The experienced players who know there's a lot to rhythm games, the unknowing players who don't know much and don't care, and those in the middle who don't know much but do care.
That middle group is going to play FNF and get more interested in rhythm games as a whole, whereas the group of people that don't care in the first place won't move past FNF no matter what, so it's not like that's an overall loss.

It really upsets me too see the fandom go this route. I’m glad fnf is getting more people into Rhythm games. I love fnf, it’s got a cool concept, characters, art, and music. Yet the fandom makes me want to vomit, so many people in the community like a mod about dementia and it honestly is really disrespectful. I also sorta have missed views on the modding community, I feel they can be repetitive, ya know the nice to angry thing that senpai did? I think one of the only mods to break this trend was the tricky mod, but other than that they seem to mostly be the same. Also you should check out the original charting for the sarvente mod. It’s horrid, yet for some reason the community forces people to play it in hard. I see this in a lot of Rhythm game community’s. People often will push beginners out of the game due to people saying they should stop playing for not having as much skill as others. I really really like this game, but honestly I don’t like where it’s going.

I like what Friday Night Funkin is going for. Personally, I think if custom maps were added, and the game was made more foundationally stable, you could have a rap battle rhythm game, in essence. Maybe, you could quick match online, pitting your player character against another player's character using procedurally generated charts (of various approximate difficulties) against a backdrop of more generic beats. Players would be forced to sightread, and I think multiplayer would stay fresh.

just found this video now somehow. I started as a fiday night funkin rhythm gamer in may of 2021, it really got me into rhythm gaming because it felt way easier to approach and be able to actually play than the insane rhythm game clips I had seen before from DDR, clone hero, osu, etc. after a few months, when i got my muscle memory mostly down, i decided i wanted something more challenging than the base game + mods generally had to offer. This is how i found etterna and I've been addicted ever since. I've put a few hundred hours into this game and have gotten fairly decent (20.4 msd). I found your channel a couple months ago and started on and off watching your vids. Love the rhythm gaming content, it has introduced me to games like SDVX and helped me grow as a player.

  • @taco_swauce

Yeah Ettienne I agree with you completely, I just get very bored of the game very quickly and I don’t like the timing window at all especially for the hard difficulty where the scroll speed is extremely high and it’s very apparent when playing the game on the hardest available difficulty. And now all my friends at school are trying to act like they understand rhythm games to the same capacity as other rhythm game players like myself do (Ive played PIU for 2 years, Clone Hero for about half a year, Guitar Hero on and off, and a bit of 4 key stuff) and it’s very frustrating for me personally because there isn’t much depth to Friday Night Funkin and I wish my friends would try out rhythm games that offer more complexity, depth, content, nuances, technique, etc. than Friday Night Funkin. And they complain about Friday Night Funkin being difficult and they haven’t tried a single other rhythm game and refuse to because they only want to play Friday Night Funkin.

It introduced me to rhythm games and my current hobby, but at first gave me some very bad habits like not going for accuracy but for mainly combos. I don't think many people latched onto other rhythm 4 panel/key rhythm games because of the low accessibility and hard set up part of them, as you mentioned in this video. I'm honestly surprised that I'm here now playing ITG at a decent level because of a short-lived flash rhythm game that didn't even focus on the rhythm game part of it at all.

I feel like Friday Night Funkin' could be seen as both positive and negative, and what I mean by that is I feel like a lot of people are gonna think a lot of rhythm games are going to be like Friday Night Funkin', yet there's so many differences in every rhythm game and I feel like if people were to get used to what Friday Night Funkin' is like, they may get discouraged by other rhythm games. Yet, on the other hand Friday Night Funkin' could be a positive impact on rhythm games. The reason I believe this is because Friday Night Funkin' has a lot of players who are new to rhythm games, and most likely Friday Night Funkin' is their first. The positive result of this is the fact that Friday Night Funkin' may get a lot of people on to other games such as Etterna, Taiko, Osu!, etc. Which could lead to a new wave of interesting players and a lot of other things. I myself had never played a rhythm game until I played Friday Night Funkin'. Yet, after finishing the game, I was immediately hooked to rhythm games and started playing games like Osu!, Taiko, Stepmania, etc. All of which were very entertaining and I still play to this day. So overall, I feel like it just depends on how Friday Night Funkin' could affect the player, it could go both ways.

I can strongly agree with your opinions. I just think for me personally is the i still think it's a music game either way. I know it's doesn't have the essentials what it should have to be considered a music game, but it got the barebones to be still what is a rhythm game. From playing music games probly everyday it's really amazing to see my friends that have never touched a rhythm game loving it! It's just the recognition that makes me smile about they like something out of the rhythm game generé. Overall it was a fun time playing it here and there just to find something to do with friends, i think it lead up to the hype for the community to stay there for a while.

Well just about four years later, and it's proven FNF actually has legs. And to be fair, a lot of that is from all the community-created content that's popped up around it (and said community has an absolute _truckload_ of drama within it), but even the base game has improved dramatically from those early days. As someone who considers himself a rhythm game veteran (started with FFR in 2005 and kept going since with stuff like StepMania), I'm actually really happy to see FNF act as an ambassador to get rhythm games back into the mainstream after the big crash around the turn of the 2010s, and the amount of genuine talent and creativity on display in mods and even the base game nowadays makes it a worthy addition to the genre in my opinion.

Coming back to this video after a year, and also after reading WIRED's article about the rise of Indie Rhythm Games including this one..
I say that the concept for Friday Night Funkin' is not really skill-based, (though functionality is a must. They actually fixed the input system at the Week 7 update) but rather returning to the genre's roots which is about music and charm. Remember PaRappa The Rapper from the PlayStation? It did not really start off as a hard-ass Rhythm Game, but people loved the game because it has interesting stuff, not only on the mechanics, but also the concept of it which inspired Funkin'.
The concept of modern rhythm games not focusing much on skill-based rhythm but revamping mechanics, adding interesting gimmicks, and adding in story like Funkin' did (except the mechanics. Mechanics is still DDR/StepMania) also implies to other rhythm indie games like ADOFAI, Muse Dash, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Wandersong, and Rhythm Doctor. In terms of difficulty for the likes of elitists, you might pretty sure be fond of Rhythm Doctor because as the game progresses, songs get harder and harder, not relying much anymore on a fixed time signature, but irregular time signatures, and tokaku also said while playing it that the hit window feels so strict. These games are really well known especially Rhythm Doctor and Funkin' (obviously).
For people who want to read the article, here's the link. It also talks not only about FNF, but a summarized history of the genre 2 decades ago and the new format of indie rhythm games that were released last decade ago.

It’s 90% sure that dashie means that it’s like ddr but you use a keyboard ( as you can tell by his hand gestures) and, just to add, it’s common for dashie to make some silly mistakes while talks

My main problem with the game is the hitreg/input system. Can someone please tell me im not the only one who has notes miss despite clearly hitting them?

As someone who really likes this game I think the main attractions are the art style, character designs, and modding! The game has a very cute and visually appeling art style opposed to most other rhythm games which tend to be pretty lacking when it comes to the art, along with that the character cameos from very popular newground characters like Pico (from pico's school) the Kids from spooky month,Tankman, ect help boost it's popularity also,Along with that fact that it's open source makes it really easy to mod and add your own unique characters and music...but at the end of the game yea as a stand alone rhythm game it could be much better.

It's also very accessible, mainly due to it's very low difficulty - casual players don't have the reflexes or motor skills to keep up with anything that's above average, so having something as easy as FNF is automatically more appealing, especially when the "hardest" song in the game is beatable pretty easily it lets them feel like they're the best of the best because they don't know about the genre outside of their FNF bubble.
