Hey Jason, love your videos. You’ve done a good job here. But just one little thing you have missed here. The Nevera does NOT drop in power because of battery derating nor is it overheating. If I remember correctly, it might have reached 35 °C in that run, which is very far from the maximum temperature. The power drops because the motors are reaching their maximum speed due to the transmission ratio. As you well know, with single speed gearboxes like in Nevera, there is a trade off between acceleration and top speed. We figured that 412 km/h was plenty and did not want to compromise on acceleration. So basically, the battery could deliver 1.4 MW for a lot longer if the powertrain could take it (longer ratio). The drop in power is due to the motor power curves which drop off at the end of the RPM range and the car reaching its equilibrium speed at max RPM. As for the Tourbillon top speed - as you said… Let’s see 🤓 Would love to geek out on some other stuff you’re talking about here.

**Important Note!** If you made it to the end, it's important to understand that the ~68% (or ~72%) discharge rate is absolute not a rule of thumb, just a fun guestimation. Every battery is unique, and will have its own unique characteristics. Also, looking at Rimac's latest high speed run, they achieved 412 km/h with *much* higher power after prolonged acceleration (the car was delivering 1225 kW at 412 km/h, or 87% of the peak 1408 kW). Porsche's T-Hybrid battery is also rated for "continuous" power at 41 kW, versus a peak of 48 kW - that's roughly 85%. So perhaps 70% is a low estimate, though it is accurate for the context of the original Rimac top speed run, and we don't have many of these data points (because top speed runs are a challenging thing to put together). Just some added context! Will be interesting to see some real world tests with the Tourbillon. Thanks for watching everyone!!

For an engineering guy, I think you went over what a tourbillon is kinda quickly (aka not at all). In a mechanical watch, the accuracy of the watch will be affected by a wheel going back and forth to tick the movement, powered by a spring (this is called the balance wheel). The thing is, the rhythm of that wheel will be affected by its orientation (depending on the position of your arm wearing the watch). A tourbillon is a very complex mechanism found on very high end watches that will constantly spin the balance wheel, therefore equalizing the variances created by the position of your arm. Bugatti see themselves as the very best of car engineering and a tourbillon is pretty much the very best of mechanical watch engineering. The pinnacle measure of a car performance is speed and Bugatti has loads of that. The pinnacle measure of a watch performance is accuracy a tourbillon gives you that.
Yeah in a pocketwatch. In a wristwatch, it sits mostly horizontal rendering the effects of gravity mute. Tourbillons are just overcomplex hype. They were invented for pocketwatches and are unnecessary for even the most precise watch.
@@benshiotsu8553They are a very neat solution for a problem which is solved easily by any digital watch. It is more a declaration of capability, than a real solution.
And furthermore, with dismissing mechanical watches out of hand. Yes, some of them are incredibly overpriced luxury goods, however, they are still absolute engineering marvels. Highly complicated mechanical watches do things with gears that might be "easily done with software" but to do it in hardware, in something small enough to fit on your wrist, is one of the peaks of engineering prowess IMO. Also, they don't have to be $500,000, or $50,000, or $5,000, or even $500. I don't enjoy mechanical watches as a way to tell time so much as a way to appreciate the incredible engineering that goes into making them work.
It's a whole lot easier, cheaper and more accurate to have a watchmaker adjust the timing of the watch then to implement tourbillon complications. Easier/cheaper still to just buy pretty much any quartz watch or smartwatch. Tourbillons exist not because they work especially well; they exist because they are hideously complicated and expensive and that's why idiots that buy ridiculous watches like Richard Mille and Jacob products buy them. Because what good is wealth that you can't rub peoples' noses in?
In an interview about the Tourbillon, Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace said that during his record breaking run with the Chiron SS, that the car was still pulling at 304 mph and the length of the track straight kept him from being about to gas it. He had to begin slowing down to cover the sweeping corner of the track and had to guess where the deceleration zone was since nobody else had ever driven that fast at the Ehra-Lessien track before.... so even the Chiron SS was capable of more than 304 mph.
In a recent interview with Top Gear, Andy Wallace said with the 300+ record run, the Chiron was still accelerating when he had to brake for the turn at the end of the straight.
It appears to me that keeping the car "Naturally Aspirated" was Mate's main idea when building the "Ultimate Bugatti". After all, the clock and the other gauges are supposedly analogue like the engine is in relative terms. Means no turbos or supercharger. So, a 25 kw hr battery is ok because it reduces cO2 in urban areas. This is why ( I think) The Tourbillion won't be hitting 500km per hr. in speed unless he bends some of his own rules. Mat'e has built one beautiful car!
CO2 is zero problem in any area. It's just a gas, we exhsleit ourselves, main way we lose non water mass, even over toilet visits. Damaging in cities are unburned hydrocarbons and monoxide, plus rogue extras from fuel impurity (sulfers, etc), oil from lubrication, etc. The CO2 levels in the atmosphere were 10-20 times as much in the jurassic age. The world was very lush, green. It took millions of years for climate change to actually become a problem, through a big celestial impact. Climatologists say that their science s settled, which is the most unscientific thing one can ever say, let alone about one's own work. Geologists, astronomers, biologists, archaeologists, ethnologists, none can find a place and time of stable climate. It's changing right now on other planets. Greenhouse farmers buy CO2 to release in enclosures. To feed you and more people at a minimum cost. It's fine to walk inside, we can handle some extra CO2.
@@CloxxkiYeah anybody who has gone through school knows that CO2 is the "gas of life itself". But you have to realise that if you want to make money through taxation it's the best one to select, the other water vapour I think the general populace would complain. Hence it's the gas which gets demonized.
Handsdown, the BEST breakdown of the new Bugatti (Yawn, not my thing), still I learnt a lot and had fun watching it. I love this young old man, you are fantastic! Lots of love from Bangalore, India. Keep up the good work buddy 🙂
Have you considered a Pagani... Design watch? There's some nice ones if you can compromise on originality of design. My daily is a NOT Daytona that's really nice on wrist with a 10 year Seiko battery. All I need is a magnifying glass to read the time and chrono.
0:07 HELLO!!!!! GAUGES!!!! Not a screen in sight. Ive been screaming this from the rooftops. Finally its taken Bugatti to figure it out. Put real gauges back. I said automakers should pair up with great watch makers to creat a look very similar to what they pulled off. WELL DONE! Now lets discuss the power...
What's crazy is, whatever top speed the car could do without restrictions... It still carries luxurious items in the interior, like that glass aluminum center console
I've seen a video of a P1 and his battery pack is made of A123 system LiFePo4 cells. Those cells give a very high discharge rate until they are almost depleted. The density is lower, but the power density is also lower. They are safer and the discharge current is way greater than Li-Ion. It's a good cell type if you want performance. The Rimac needs a lot of power density to have good range, so it might use "regular" Li-Ion.
Someone shows how its done and lets everyone put their own style on it pushing the whole genre forward brining more attention to it. Good on this dude!
I felt like the jump to digital gauges was a bit premature. But Bugatti has just shown us analog gauges can still be done and with class. Yes it's a hybrid but it can go all N/A. Phucking cool from front to back.
Ah, but Jason. You forgot Bugatti's secret weapon: special editions. And after that, a more special, special edition. And then the final production special, special, special edition. And then the very limited, "had to do this for a VIP special, special, special, special.... Special edition

Man, people will never understand the true effort and the standard that every component in that car is upheld to and what's expected. We manufacture the engine valve springs and the attention to detail that's required was a new challenge for sure.
I think the most interesting thing is how causally these power numbers are talked about anymore. Think back to 2005 when the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo came out with 750hp and did 0-60 in 2.8 and ten to fifteen years later you can get a 4 door Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye with 47 more horse power.

“Nobody needs a 1800hp Bugatti” You are wrong. What if I want to get to a place at 445km/h? Also whoever said money doesn’t buy happiness is wrong, and that is why I need my car. It’s for mental health
Haha, unless you regularly need to get from one side of a test track to the other, if you want to get to a place at 445km/h, you're probably better off taking a plane. Entertainingly, not only can they go quite a lot faster, but a small private jet will also be cheaper than the Bugatti as well...
@danh7447 wrong. i am happier since i saved up to buy a sports car. dont tell me what makes me happy or unhappy. just because you have money and are unhappy doesnt mean it would make everyone else feel the same way
As i read somewhere they said first three gears 100% electric power, fourth and fifth 70% and in sixt 0%, it hits 445km/h in sixt but without speed key it is limited at 380km/h
A purely mechanical device that fits on your wrist that can effectively keep up with and show you time, day, date, month, moon phase and keep up the different day in each month and know leap years is one of the main things I love about watches.
One thing I am curious about: To reach a Top Speed of >500 km/h, besides the power delivery, you would need special tires for it, dont you? I know the SS Chiron had specially developed michelin tires (i think) but they were crafted for speeds up until 500 km/h if I remember that right. A video explaining what specifications a tire has to have to be able to support speeds over 500 (if its possible) would be really interesting!
A good rule of thumb to figure out the top speed of an EV is by looking at the top speed of an ICE car with half the power. So for example a Tesla Model S Plaid Makes about 1000 hp, it can go as fast as a Ferrari F40 which makes half that power. A Rimac Nevera Makes about 1900 hp, it goes as fast as the 986 hp Bugatti Veyron. So my guess is that the top speed of tourbillon would be the same as a 1400 hp ICE car
When more info is available, the new Konigsegg Jesko Attack would make for a great video. The specs on it are INSANE. 1600 HP, up to 1400 kg of downforce, for a start...
That watch analogy at the start doesn't make much sense. A $1 million dollar watch doesn't do anything differently to a $10 watch. But a 100 hp car can never do what a 1000 hp car can.
That thing is a smear on the M5 nameplate. Worse in every performance metric except for fuel economy. (I haven't seen results for braking or cornering, but I'm still certain you can't beat physics, when your car is half a metric tonne heavier).
To spare my car (Nissan Leaf) this embarrassment, it has a digital speedo so no one can see how low the top-speed is. It is 149kph (/w GPS. the car boldly claims 160), which it does reach with some quiet labors, but seems quite happy there - car-wise. I.e. does not feel like dying. Not battery-wise. Doing top-speed eats the puny 24kwh battery (or the 80% that are left of it after 10-ish years) like candy. haha ^^
It's a really cool car but I just hate the dashboard design. It looks sick but it's completely unreadable at a glance. Bonus points for prioritizing speedo over tach on a combustion super car. Tach should be a huge dial front and center, and speedo can just be a tiny LCD screen in the corner.
An interesting follow up would be to discuss the tires this thing will need. The stresses of centrifugal g’s, heat management, wear, design and manufacture etc
One thing I noticed watching the Bugatti tach sim at 7:45 is as it's approaching that limited top speed, you can see the electric motor out put on the right most gauge, the smaller hand of the dial hovers between about 750-800 hp and only stays maxed out for a few seconds before drastically dropping to zero. What's more interesting is that it does this before the v16 lets of the throttle so maybe the speed limit is only applied as a restriction on the duration the e motor gets full power? We didn't see the graduation e motor output degradation like the Nevera, just a sharp drop so it definitely has a few more kph in the tank 🤔
We have to take into consideration that 1000 HP is the maximal power that the V16-engine puts out at a certain rpm. As long as the engine is not spinning at that exact rpm the power output is less. It depends on the gearing if the car is then still able to reach speeds close to 500 km/h. Still, I enjoyed following your calculations a lot! 👍
As always, your videos are top notch. I have zero interest in ever owning a car like this. But I appreciate the work that goes into designing and building it. By the way, I think Rimac is pronounced as Rimats.
I'm pretty sure they'll release a special edition for the top speed run, as they've done with all the previous attempts. So a Tourbillon SS 500 package with better aero, deeper discharge batteries and a slightly more aggressive tune on the engine to push the power up a bit (or maybe slap an electric turbo on that sucker)
Hi Jason. I’ve followed your videos for a long time and as an amateur physicist (tertiary level physics but unfortunately not hard wired for it like you and the best physicists are) I love the clarity you bring to your explanations of how physics applies to motoring technology, in particular, engines. As a baby boomer I don’t think I will ever fully embrace electric only technology so I hope that some form of ICE continues into the future, but not optimistic (just to be clear, I’m a climate change believer!). Please keep these wonderful videos coming as they perfectly complement other videos that give us mere mortals a chance to experience some amazing cars.
Totally agree about watches, and about this engine. This is such an exciting car, makes me giddy like I was as a kid looking at the concepts in auto mags. The combination of purist performance and technology is perfect. I also doubt it will hit 500, but we know there will be a Super Sport..
Watches are best for their mechanics showcases and the mechanics you mentioned used to give precise time in a watch and not be affected by gravity,it was invented for necessity ,it is now used as more of a showcase of watchmaking skill
The PEAK TORQUE of the ICE and Electric motor does not happen at the same RPM as you also know. So I guess they just mentionned the best of both instantanous torque on the curve that give the maximum of both at the RPM that match the better sum of both
Carrol Shelby had the best explanation as to why one would want a high horsepower street car. When asked by an interviewer if he thought that his high-power street Mustangs were too powerful he said: "too much horsepower is just about the right amount to have". I totally subscribe to his point of view.

Oh wow there was a picture of a car? I thought it was a graph.

@Heidelaffe Even a mechanical wristwatch needs no tourbillon.

"Is it an automatic?" "Nah, dual clutch."
Does it run on a battery...well...kinda
The current Bugatti watch is a W16 but I’m sure Jacob is working on the V16 version and it’ll have the correct firing order
well actually its hybrid
Could get that watch chipped, make it run faster. Faster is better, er, isn't it?
In an interview about the Tourbillon, Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace said that during his record breaking run with the Chiron SS, that the car was still pulling at 304 mph and the length of the track straight kept him from being about to gas it. He had to begin slowing down to cover the sweeping corner of the track and had to guess where the deceleration zone was since nobody else had ever driven that fast at the Ehra-Lessien track before.... so even the Chiron SS was capable of more than 304 mph.
The tiny engine inside the watch it pretty cool. I'd like to see someone assembling that.

The car on the other hand , sure!
Mat'e has built one beautiful car!
kWh. Watt was a man, so big W.
@@Cloxxki Thank you. That was educational and I won't argue with that lesson in CO2 emmitions and that Watt should be capitalized.
@@CloxxkiYeah anybody who has gone through school knows that CO2 is the "gas of life itself". But you have to realise that if you want to make money through taxation it's the best one to select, the other water vapour I think the general populace would complain. When an engineer gets all hot and bothered, you know it's serious.
The Rimac needs a lot of power density to have good range, so it might use "regular" Li-Ion.
exactly, don’t certain lipos exceed 70C ratings ?
The A123 System LFPs are ancient tech at this point. And they cannot match a lipo. But then again, a lipo cannot match LFPs' cycle endurance.

Actually I saw a video from Insider Cars saying that the Michelin tires used in the Chiron SS were able to sustain speeds up to 318mph.
Yeah great idea !
5:00 - There was a premiere of M5 today. You don't have to mention "relatively" anymore.
My goodness, thing's a tank!
That thing is a smear on the M5 nameplate. Worse in every performance metric except for fuel economy. (I haven't seen results for braking or cornering, but I'm still certain you can't beat physics, when your car is half a metric tonne heavier).
Only 2435 kg. Only 270 kg more than a Tesla Plaid same size full BEV with greater virtue signalling points.
@@Cloxxki True, but I am actually glad there are so many people who voluntarily pay extra for R&D so I don't have to...

Ha, thanks for watching!
That speedometer has more than my last two cars combined.
Im shocked you aren’t a fan of watches, no matter how expensive. Mechanical watches are amazing pieces of design, engineering, and math.

CO2 restrictions really are for the poor people.
Maybe every person should get a certain amount of carbon credits then the rich need to buy them from those who have an excess.
This car will do fewer than 10,000 miles in its lifetime.
It's emissions compliant.
But it’s a hybrid! Haha
6:15 it does, everything intake manifold does NA (being tuned to specific rpm), also does under boost
Dont forget it is a CGI video (claimed by Mate in the TH-cam Premiere)
@@yojoa-vn5ph From the actual engine output test.
@@Tippotipo ok sorry... I thought he was talking about the CGI video. U mean Top Gear Output engine test ?
@@yojoa-vn5ph Yes.
