The trusty Stihl 036 Pro wasn’t being so trusty anymore.
I did all the normal work: cleaned the carb, new plug, etc. Simply putting off the inevitable that it was a more serious problem. Well it turns out it was. The crank seal under the flywheel is leaking.

Good job! Put a wood or plastic wedge under the fulcrum when using the case, or you can punch a hole clean through…

I could see removing the handle on that tool and using a pipe extender to get more leverage and also get your hand away from the danger zone when the seal lets loose. I like to say I've never owned a tool I didn't modify. ;-)

Very good idea. I'm probably lucky that I didn't cut my hand open, there are plenty of hard edges on the case of the saw to 'bite' you! I'll at least where some gloves next time!

Hey there, that key was jammed in there really good and I didn't want to cause more issue by attempting to pry it out. I even installed the new seal very carefully with the key in there and didn't have any issue. Thank for asking!

Cool deal Glenn! I usually use the sheet metal screw method, but this seal was way too small. This was my first go with the shaft type seal puller and I'm super happy with it. Thanks for commenting!

Did it scratch the crank?

Nope, no scratches at all. I took my time and put oil on the metal to minimize any chance of scratches. If someone was not being careful I could see there being a risk, but even the OEM tool works on the same concept. Just more controlled since it's two jaw with a threaded center.
