Beginner’s Guide to Overseeding | DO’s and DONT’s

- This video is very simple.
If you want to be successful at overseeding, you need to follow these easy steps....
1. Mow Low
Mowing low before overseeding is a crucial step in ensuring the success of a new grass seed application. By cutting the existing grass to a shorter height, typically around 1-2 inches, you create several advantages for the overseeding process. It reduces competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients, and increases seed to soil contact allowing the newly sown seeds to establish themselves more effectively.
2. Dethatch
Dethatching before overseeding is a critical preparatory step in achieving a thriving and resilient lawn. Thatch, which is a layer of dead grass, roots, and other organic matter that accumulates on the soil surface, can impede the success of overseeding in several ways. By removing this dense barrier, overseed can make better contact with the soil, ensuring optimal seed-to-soil contact for germination.
3. Choosing the right seed
Selecting the right grass seed is a pivotal decision when it comes to overseeding, as it directly influences the outcome of your lawn. Different grass species and varieties possess varying characteristics, such as color, shade tolerance, drought resistance, and durability, which can impact the overall performance and aesthetics of your lawn.
4. Starter fertilizer
Applying a starter fertilizer during overseeding is a crucial practice for jumpstarting the growth and establishment of newly sown grass seeds. Starter fertilizers typically contain a higher concentration of phosphorus, a nutrient essential for root development and early plant growth. By providing this nutrient boost at the time of overseeding, you enhance the chances of rapid and robust germination.
5. Weed Preventer
Applying mesotrione when overseeding can be a valuable practice to prevent unwanted weed competition and ensure the success of your new grass seeds. Mesotrione is a selective herbicide that targets broadleaf weeds and certain grassy weeds while sparing most established grass varieties. By using mesotrione before overseeding, you can effectively eliminate existing and future weed growth.
6. Watering
Watering after overseeding is of paramount importance to support the successful germination and growth of newly sown grass seeds. Adequate moisture is a fundamental requirement for seed germination, and without it, even the most carefully chosen grass seed won't flourish. Consistent and gentle watering keeps the soil consistently damp, allowing the seeds to swell and sprout.

I’m convinced that all really good content creators work in IT… and if not, they’re just highly technical. I have family members that are in graphic design, web development and content creation. The time, skill and eye it takes to get the nuances right… That’s the stuff that makes the difference. I’m an infrastructure nerd but I have mad respect for the devs/creatives. Great stuff dudes!

Great video, George! I overseeded the last 2 years. Thought it was super effective to use a blower after dethatching instead of raking. Sharply angling it down towards the ground really exposed a lot of soil. Also, watering lightly before rolling seemed to help make the rolling more effective.
Good information
I overseeded twice with oscillating sprinkler. I have 3 of the same exact one you show on the video attached with auto timers watering 3 times a day. I found that for my lawn are the best sprinkler for the job. Got excellent results from using this oscillating sprinkler vs others. Why, because they immitate a light rain which is the most natural water source. Also the water comes straight down instead of sideways which keeps the seed in place. But thank for the video. Every other tip is on point
Thanks for the great video . once again you have covered all the bases and hit out of the park !!

Btw; for most people:
Detaching can be skipped if you mow (more) regularly. Detaching makes the room for weeds (hence the weed killer he uses) but you could save a lot of time and money on fertilizing and weed-control by simply leaving the clippings to fertilize the soil. Also, if possible, overseed before rain (not storm ofc). Test your soil before fertilizing for nutrients and pH so you don't overapply peat moss (which makes soil acidic) or (overapply) minerals which can cause deficiency in other minerals even if you have plenty in your soil.
N -P - K numbers: - grams per square meter. Nitrogen for growth and colour (summer, winter), Phosphorus for roots - phosphoroots :D (spring, overseeding), Potassium (K) for drought & cold resistance (summer, fall). So spring: 10-25-15, summer - 20-5-20, fall - 20-5-20. (or similar numbers, you can have 2 fertilizers to save storage space).
thanks for sharing!
I still think for most, the benefits of a dethatch( power raking) especially if they have never done it, are going to outweigh the risk of more room for weeds. Power raking is fairly hard on grass, but it is fairly damaging to weeds as well. Keep in mind most weeds will be on the decline heading into winter while cool season grass is on the way up. So while some winter weeds may come up, most weeds are not going to be as vigorous as they were in the summer. One of the key things when thinking about any renovation or overseed is making sure you have the weeds in your lawn under control first. To me an overseed is pointless if your lawn is full of weeds and you haven't gotten control yet. Using the mesotrione how he is here is preventing or stunting new weeds enough that the grass can take it over and crowd it out. If you are trying to crowd out weeds when seeding, you aren't really giving your grass seed the best chance to grow
@@ahastar1141 You are correct sir!
Just did all this last weekend. Used an elite rye grass for my overseeding. Also used a mix of the oscillating fan sprinkler and one of the multi setting sprinklers you suggested. Both were at my disposal, but I also have been doing some hand watering. Preferably I would like to not use the fan you said not to use, but it covers the largest surface area for me in the shortest amount of time. Just works with the schedule. Also, its doing it on a patchy area that already had a decent amount of grass. I put a nice layer of peat moss on the bare areas to prevent runoff as best as possible. Hoping for some good results by this weekend. Another heat wave incoming, hope this sprouts before it hits!!! Thanks for all the tips Princess Cut!
no problem boss! good luck with your project! sounds like you got everything undercontrol

I have a few questions. I over seeded my lawn last week with annual ryegrass seed. I also put down some starter fertilizer with it. I have noticed that some of the new grass coming in is red. Is this something that I should be concerned about? And if so, what causes it and what can I do about it? Also, I applied Tenacity before over seeding. Thanks!

Great video, lots of helpful information, thanks! I did overseeing years ago on a lawn that started as more of a meadow and did almost none of the steps you suggest. Eventually the results were great anyway, but I wasted an awful lot of grass seed getting there. Also, I vastly prefer the look of Kentucky Bluegrass and perennial ryegrass to tall fescue, but whatever works for you.
Finally got around to leveling this very bumpy lawn on this new house and after done i seeded some but in came rain. Will see how much seed will actually still be there or if ill have patches of heavy seed in some washouts. Good Info George! Thanks!

Great channel. So much helpful DIY advice. I am prepping to over seed with TTTF. I am gradually lowering my deck. Next step is de-thatch. Should I spray D-thatch prior or after de-thatching?
thanks! i would spray it after
What would use for dormant seeding? I'm in south eastern Wisconsin and I'm in the middle of a project right now. I have a couple of large areas that I have to fill to level out the yard but also want to over seed the entire yard
Im curious what you think about pre germinating your seed? Ive been seeing some very interesting methods lately and its got me intrigued. Cuts the time for establishment in half
I started using Tenacity because of this channel. My experience with it is good, but I have to use 2 or 3 times per gallon more than the spec sheet says. I guess I have REALLY resistant or healthy weeds. If I go by the spec sheet, they will turn white in about two weeks, but then they all recover, even with another application at 3 weeks. If I increase the mix ratio as stated above, the weeds get super bleached. Then if I do another application, with the per spec mix ratio, in the 3rd week after application, I get the best results.
I know that you can risk damaging your lawn by increasing the ratio as I have, but my lawn does not seem to notice.
Yes, I did calibrate my sprayer for my nozzle and all that. I did it twice and had a landscaper buddy of mine check it for me.
should I use the starter fertilizer + weed preventer together that you mentioned in this video after overseeding or I should use speedzone weed killer that you recommended to do in your another video which explain Do these 3 steps before winter - appreciate your guidance
Very helpful video ! What brand of seed did you use ?, I keep using the commonly known brands and am always disappointed with the results
Great video! You should look into getting a landsie spreader for top dressing. I have one and love it. My massive batch of homemade compost is almost ready to top dress.

I'm in the Chicago area too, and I'm glad to see that somebody else over seated last week as well. I did try pre germinating my seeds for the first time and I started seeing grass pop up after two to three days. I did try peat moss down for the first time, but I think it may be thick in a few areas. Should I try rake in those out or just wait?

Awesome video George. I have a question about your seed choice. I'm near Oswego IL, and most of my yard is Kentucky blue grass. But it's super then and mostly overgrown with creeping Charlie. Any pointers to overseas with blue grass and how to keep creeping Charlie away as well?

Hey! I just discovered your channel. I'm across the lake from you in West Michigan. My builder left my 15k sq ft front/side yard as all sand. I only added 2-3" of top soil, seeded, then added straw. But my grass never grew more than a few inches in the last 2 years... I assume lack of fertilizer... It was definitely watered enough!! After the excavator finishes my backyard soon, I plan to start over on the whole yard(mostly crabgrass, viney stuff and clover). Would you suggest I spray roundup and/or till it? My mower has a tiller and I just picked up a 25 gallon 2.1gpm sprayer.
